  2. I gained 6 lbs, but my first visit was last Sept!! I should have been done in June. My surgeon's office messed up and never scheduled the nutrition classes I needed. My bypass surgery is on Monday, 10/22. My surgeon scolded me, but I bit back and told him about his staff and their error, which they had admitted why everything was delayed. Also, since I started this I've seen my daughter pregnant and have her baby, my son got married in April, and my daughter got married in May. All in another state, so I traveled by car a lot! I developed a DVT from the traveling, which has since resolved. I've had steroid injections in both knees and my neck. He scolded me and told me I owed him 6 lbs by my surgery date. Whatever!! It could have been worse. I'm down over 11lbs today and ready for Monday. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Anyone get sick before surgery date and did they postpone or keep your date?I am scheduled for November 19th and I think I am getting sick.I thought it was just allergy but not sure .I guess i will see how I feel Monday and call the surgeon .

    Any Minnesota (MN) sleevers?

Hi! I am in Minnesota as well. Just joined the forum. I am finishing up appointments as well hoping to have it scheduled either in early December or late November.
  5. I was looking for the same thing. I started having issues with my band last year and had to have all of the fluid taken off. Since then, I have gained back 90 of the 100 lbs I lost. Insurance denied my revision, at first, but I won on appeal. I saw the doctor 2 days ago and got my new surgery date... November 7th. I'm excited and scared all at once! My husband has had the gastric bypass and is doing wonderful. Now it's my turn, again. Just don't know if my experience will be any different, since my band has to be removed.
  6. Well...I haven't yet mustered up the courage to go into a Victoria Secrets, but I did buy myself some cute new lil panties! Wow! What a great feeling! And the other panty victory....before my surgery in November after I dried off from my shower, I would always have to hold onto the bathroom counter as I stuck one leg and then the other leg into the legs of my panties. For the past three days I have been able to put on my panties without holding onto anything! I can't believe how much easier I can MOVE and how much better I can BALANCE. Hope this motivates people who are thinking about this surgery or who have just started. Tiny things like I have described are life changing and liberating!!!
  7. I was planning a Gastric Sleeve procedure but was unable to due to Barret's. I had my RNY bypass on July 10 and everything has worked out great. I am down 50# and have decreased my risk of esophageal cancer, amongst other things! I was initially upset about having to change my plans bit once I got used to the idea and educated myself, I went for it. I am so glad that I did! Good luck!

    Taking NSAID's for back pain

I had a bad headache 3 days out and my surgeon said it was fine to take Excedrin as long as I cut the pill in half. With sleeve you can still eventually take those meds just not right away. With bypass you are told not to
  10. Gosh I totally get it. I have been going through my head for the last week or 2 (since my last RD appt). Yesterday I saw the surgeon and she's like...well hell! She said I had my 3 visits from the RD and she was gonna submit me for approval. We chose the surgery and wrote it in blood. Killed a newt and took its eye. Ripped out a lizard tongue and drew a pentagram on the floor. So I'm pretty sure this is a done deal. LOL. And I am scared. On the way home I asked my self if I REAAAAALLLYYYY thought I would lose the rest of my weight on my own. Why would it be any different than the other eleventy billion times I've tried and failed. What would make it happen this time. What would make keeping it off a reality? Why wouldn't I just regain it all again plus the requisite 10-15%? The only answer I could come up with involved magic or voodoo. Since I'm a good Catholic girl, I just figured I need to sac up and get my head, as*, and tummy in the game. (I had to "borrow a pair" to sac up...but you get the idea.) The reality is that the ONLY way I'm gonna be successful is to do something different this time. I think "that something different" is gonna have to be the RNY surgery. It just is and I have to get right with the Lord about that one. *sigh* So now I'm in a waiting game. I "think" what's gonna happen is that I will get approved maybe in the next 2-3 weeks. Then my family vaca at Wurstfest that the surgeon knows about...then that Monday I would start the liquid diet. I think that means I will be in surgery (she only operates on Tuesday) on November 28 or December 5 and this sh*t is gonna be a reality... So maybe we can get "the band back together" and be November surgery buddies. I just don't know if I'm jinxing things and jumping the gun by thinking it's gonna be November OR December. You know? What are you doing to prepare your mental game for the "big show?"

Most bypass people can eat anything as well. Only about a third of us dump. I never have.

    Last minute bariatrics buddy

I just got my approval today. My surgery is scheduled for December 4th, and I’m having a bypass as well. I’d love to have a few bypass friends to go through it together!
  16. Hi all. I am all set and ready for gastric bypass surgery on December 1. I have lost 8 pounds on the first 5 days of the 2 week pre op diet. My diet is mostly high Protein, vegetables and fruit. Not to bad. I WILL struggle on Thanksgiving day and I already told my doctor that I WILL be eating stuffing on that day. I am nervous, anxious, excited about the surgery and it is approaching fast. Current as of this morning is 291, 44 Jeans. Goal is 175 and jean size ???? 34? I am very active and getting this extra 100 pounds off will be life altering. I look forward to following this group forum. John

    United healthcare cost estimator tool

I have UHC advantage plan and it was covered, but I had to pay my yearly out of pocket cost. My out of pocket was $6,700. The surgery itself was about $30,000. It sucked having to pay that, but totally worth it. Also, they required me to do a 3 month supervised diet with my PCP. I started the WLS journey in November 2016 and had RNY in June 2017. Hope this helps. Every insurance plan is different. Your best bet is to call UHC directly. Good luck!

    Thanksgiving on 10/31 this year

We don't have Halloween or Thanksgiving in Australia. We do have Melbourne Cup Day (first Tuesday in November, from 11:30am to 3:45pm, two-thirds of the country shuts down for the world's richest thoroughbred race (now in its 157th running in 8 days time). One state, Victoria, shuts down for a public holiday for the whole day. And the third Thursday in November is usually the opening of the test cricket season. Cricket is way bigger than baseball as it's played across India, Pakistan, England, the Caribbean, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Dubal, the UAE, the Netherlands, Scotland, Wales, Canada ... and several more places. Unlike baseball which has nine innings over a few hours, test cricket matches are FIVE DAYS (10:30am to 6:00pm) to judge which team can outplay and outlast the other.

    How Are You Getting Prepared?

Before surgery I tried to get prepared by buying some foods such as baby food and chicken broth. I landed up not using it and it went to waste. This was because of two reasons. My taste buds changed significantly after surgery and I could not tolerate those foods. And secondarily, after surgery the amount of food I was eating was incredibly small. During the first 8 weeks, my meal volume was 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) per meal. Take out a 1/4 cup measuring cup and look at how small that is. That is the meal volume. Prior to surgery I was constantly hungry. Even when I was eating a meal, all I could think about was what I would eat for my next meal. After surgery (when I reached the solid food stage), I completely lost my hunger. So it was not difficult to lose the weight when I was not hungry. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. So it might be unwise to be too prepared. The key is to experiment after surgery. Since your taste buds may change, experiment with the various formulations of protein shakes. You do not have to like protein shakes but you must be able to tolerate them until your meal volume rises to the point that you can met your protein requirements by food alone. Sometimes you can buy a variety pack of protein mixes at GNC. Also be willing to experiment after surgery to find fluids that you can tolerate. When I was in the hospital right after surgery, I couldn't even drink the water because it tasted overly chlorinated like swimming pool water.

    The Waiting Unite

I don't understand how the same insurance company can have so many different responses to the same surgery. I too used United Healthcare. I had to do one visit with psych, with nut and exercise therapist. Then had it submitted to insurance. One week later I had approval in my hand. I will say, we learned a year earlier when my husband had gastric bypass who to talk to. We talked to my husbands HR rep at his office. She called the insurance and requested an approval specialist with United. So United actually called my Dr office and told them everything they wanted to see. And he oversaw my case from beginning to end. There is help there. Good luck for those still waiting!
  22. Hi everyone I am currently 26 years old and I am due to have gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday December 18th. I have been told by my nutritionist to go on a two-week pre-operation diet only consisting of Medi fast protein shakes. I was very strict on the diet until tonight I completely broke down and had a 12 inch italian bread with scrambled eggs in it. I feel completely guilty. But I was starving due to the fact that I have not had any solid foods since December 4th. I was feeling really emotional/irritable and overall starving. I started my weight-loss Journey at 304lbs. Today I weigh 290. During my 6 months of nutritional monitoring I was not exactly doing my best I did not lose much weight because I was not consistent .But just on the shake diet that I have been on I have lost a total weight of 7 pounds. I feel so quilty like I ruined my whole diet. I know the whole point of this is to shrink our liver size which mine was 19cm which is over the normal by like 3cm from what I have read. Have any of you screwed up like this before? And do you think me being very strict for the remainder of the 5 days will do me any good after I cheated horribly tonight 😟
  23. Yes, the program I'm in required 4 weekly "healthy lifestyle" classes and 4 "know your bypass" classes. I learned a ton of helpful info, plus made some friends along the way. We did 1 new step for success each week. One week it was simply writing down absolutely everything we ate or drank. Another week we worked on physical activity or meal planning or whatever.

    Scared and Anxious Pre Op

Being scared goes with the territory. I had gastric sleeve in 2016 and I didn't follow all the rules, now tomorrow I'm having rny bypass and wish I had done that in the first place. I have great anxiety about tomorrows surgery but I know I'm in good hands and I'm tired of all the other health issues I get. It's so worth it. Keep watching YouTube videos and know you can do this ♥️😊
