    Why different pre-op diets?

My doctor is affiliated with the Cleveland clinic, their diet consists of 2 weeks of 5 protein drinks, SF jello, SF pops and Crystal light, the 2 days prior to surgery just clear liquids including chicken broth. A good friend of mine could have one meal a day bc his diabetes was out of control. Another friend of mine only did 2 days of protein shakes and one day of clear liquids. I guess it depends on the doctor.

    Type 2 diabetics

I came off metformin pre-surgery and never restarted. A1c stays around 5.4-5.7 now. Controlled with diet and exercise. No trouble healing post-surgery. The only thing I do contend with every so often is hypoglycemia so I do still check my BS at various times, although not necessarily daily. Usually before going to the gym and after a strenuous workout. Also, I'll test if I'm feeling weird like I do when my sugar is getting on the low side. I am more vigilant than ever about keeping something with me (i.e. juice) should I experience low BS away from home or work
  3. I am nearly 2 years post op and I am still here almost every day. I am at goal since March of this year. The road to getting to goal was so much easier than maintaining it in my opinion. Mostly because watching that scale move provided me with more incentive to keep forging forward. That being said, I am beginning to learn new ways to remain motivating to keep my weight where it is. For the next year at least it will be gifting myself plastics along the way. If I maintain, I get to have work done. In terms of advice given out by folks that have yet to experience WLS or are just a few months out. You have to take it with a grain of salt. We were all there once and as for me, I focused only on what my medical team provided and then assessed what I read on line. I asked lots of questions, and shared my learnings. For me the one thing that frustrates me like crazy is when some newly post op is looking for permission to do exactly what they shouldn't and another newbie gives them permission. It isn't helping anyone and in fact a bit of tough love can shake you into reality. It is my biggest pet peeve and about the only thing I will get seriously peeved about. If you are looking for permission to do something you know you shouldn't do or if you are the one handing out the permission you can be assured I won't keep my mouth shut. It isn't doing anyone any good and let's be honest we don't need to be coddled, we need to be told the straight skinny. Someone asked me about whether or not Brachioplasty is painful. If you read all the BS from the docs on real self, they will tell you that their is discomfort and you will be back to work in a week or less. They don't tell you it hurts like you just slammed both your arms on a hot stove and held it there for about an hour. They burn like hell. They don't tell you that as soon as you do any activity the swelling increases and you can feel your arms bulge and they don't tell you that there is a ton of itching or tickling in your arms as the nerves begin to heal. Guess what, ask me and I will tell you what I know based on my experiences.....you will get the real deal whether you like it or not. I say this as I sit here with two ice packs tucked under each arm pit almost all day long for the last 12 days. LOL!

    Cigna... Denial question

You are not an employee of Cigna - so I assume they mean your employer. I would call Cigna and explain you have worked for same company for 25 years. Don't let them get away with this BS.

    This feels like forever

Your process sounds exactly like mine. I started this journey on January of this year and will have surgery the day after tomorrow. My surgery would have been last month but it was delayed bc when the GI ordered my endoscopy they found a bacteria that had to be treated for 6 weeks. Just this morning my office neighbor and I were talking about me already having surgery, time flied though, it feels like just yesterday I told him I had decided to do it. When you least expect it you'll be in my same shoes, trust me. Good luck!
  6. Hi everyone! I had my surgery on the 18th and I must say I was terrified My presurgery weight was 86kg then bs I manage to lose to 79 kg and after one week post surgery I'm at 75! Super happy. I know that you might think that is not a lot of weight but for my 5 foot tall hobbit type body I looked like a fridge with legs, also I had many illnesses associated pre surgery so I was adviced to do it. Late June Sleeve Buddies?

I've definitely hit slight stalls. I'm in one right now where I havent lost in about a week. I'm definitely hitting my protein goals without any issues but I'm not hitting my 64oz water goal. I've only hit it total about 3 times. I do consistently hit 50+ oz a day tho. Drinking all that water feels like a job. It's hard. I know it'll all eventually happen tho and more weight will come off. I finally go back to work this week so that will help. I also have to go get my procedure done tomorrow to see if I have a structure bc I always feel like something is stuck in my throat/esophagus

    HELP!

Hi all, I'm almost 4 months post op from my sleeve. My SW was 210, and I am down to 175 currently and am 5 4. I keep fluctuating 172-177. I am in a huge stall. :'( My goal is 135.... And I am really getting discouraged. I work out, eat well, and get my fluids in.... And no matter what I do, the scale keeps giving me the finger. I need some ideas of what to do bc I haven't moved the scale in a month and a half!!! I've tried eating carbs, going periods of time not working out... NOTHING is working. I even tried a detox cleanse! I'm at a total loss of what to do. To put the icing on the cake, I will have lost 100# total from my highest at 169.... So I'm even more furious about not moving the scale. Please help this desperate chick! Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! Thank you all in advance and I hope you are all kickin ass and taking names in your journeys.

    Am I being naive?

The point is a lot of us have food addiction hints how we got obese. So putting in the food we eat before surgery has a higher risk of bingeing on it till we get sick Or only reaching for the high carb foods.... It's your belly and what you put in it is under your control... But do know a lot of people do fail and gain back the weight bc they reached for the carbs to many times. Late June Sleeve Buddies?

@@ShelterDog64 I was prepared for the stall, especially when I was consistently dropping two lbs everyday for a week straight (miss those days). I'm not worried at all being stalled, bc I'm only reaching about 600 calories, 50 grams protein and all my water intake so I know it will pass. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    PCOS Strikes again!

I don't have a good answer for you but my story is a bit similar. I have PCOS and had a hysterectomy at age 34. I'm now 41. I didn't have children and didn't want them. I am content to be the fun aunt and mom to a pack of 3 small dogs. I also had endometriosis and fibroids. Debilitating cramps and ridiculous amounts of bleeding. I had been on everything from bc pills to provera to try to regulate my nightmarish periods. I was on the trial for Seasonale and NuvaRing. Those all worked temporarily, but I'd be right back to square one again. I had 4 d&c procedures in less than 2 years. My final straw was when I had been bleeding over 60 days and called the doctor who agreed to do my surgery. I found out after the surgery that I had a severe case of adenomyosis as well. No way to tell that until they do the surgery and do a biopsy. I do not regret my hysterectomy one bit. I wish someone would have done it for me sooner. I felt like I got some degree of my life back. I still have PCOS and one remaining ovary and am hoping VSG will help me better control some of those symptoms. I wish you the best of luck in your journey.
  13. Give yourself three days to eat as much as you want . . . but only lean, unprocessed meat (no bacon, sausage, jerky, deli meat, etc.), green veggies, and healthy fats (olive oil, grass fed butter). Seriously, don't worry about counting calories or anything like that, just be very strict about the type of food you can eat. You can't complain about being hungry or needing something to keep you from being bored if you allow yourself unlimited food. And you can't do much damage, calorie-wise, with lean meats and green veggies. Eating like this for three days will help decrease your cravings for high carb and high sugar foods. The more you eat of those, the more you want them. Good luck! I am sorry you are suffering with such a nasty injury.

    Late June Sleeve Buddies?

Went to a clinic today for my cough and surprise! It could be my blood pressure medicine. Huh. I haven't had any congestion, chest or sinus, so it makes sense. Been coughing my head off. Hoping that burns some calories bc I have zero energy to exercise right now. I couldn't sleep hardly at all for coughing last night. Tried some rotisserie chicken today and it went down fine stomach wise, though it made me cough like crazy lol. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Ugh. No filter family! >:(

I am still in the researching phase, if you wanna call it that lol, and I already know my family will have something to say about the WLS if I do get approved for it. I really don't want to tell anyone about it bc I don't want to hear them be negative/critical about it. I guess I will just deal with it when the time comes haha. 17. So I am looking to have this surgery and going through all my glasses required by my surgeon and so forth it's a total of a 6 month program I'm on my 4 th month but my main concern is I'm 270 lbs and so afraid of having loose skin and my insurance not covering skin surgery I'm interested in hearing from people who have had this surgery around my weight and if they had a bunch of loose skin at my classes they say bc I'm young yet 36( not that young lol) that it will still have a lot of elasticity I have had three kids and just don't wanna have a bunch of loose skin and stretch marks already have the stretch marks. Anyone's stories or ways to prevent loose skin ect would be greatly appreciated Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Ugh. No filter family! >:(

I know too the pain of having a family with "no filter." I do not want to see them anytime soon. Both my husband and myself are now sleeved and into fitness. I know that they are going to say something rude/smart butt. Life is to short for BS. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App
  19. I do weigh myself everyday. It never fluctuated more than a pound, ever. Now that I'm on bc it's up 5 pounds. 5 pounds would never bother me, except I'm still trying to lose, and I feel like this is preventing that from happening any day I take it. So, I think I'll give it another month or two, but then I'm done with it. Lol. I always hear that gastric bypass patients lose within the first 12 months, and I don't want to waste the rest of the time fluctuating because of birth control. Or only lose weight one week out of the month. It's counter productive. On the other hand, getting pregnant would blow ANY weight loss out of the window.
  20. Ask your gyno? Did you weigh yourself every day before starting BC pills? I know that my weight fluctuates 2-4 pounds depending on the content of my gastric system and any Water weight from the heat or my period. In a 4 week time span you have lost 2 pounds. I would try the pills for a couple more months, but if you really have concerns talk to your gyno. I have an IUD because I can't hang with the hormone drama of pills.
  21. I had gastric bypass 6 months ago, and I steadily lost weight until I got on birth control a month ago. The day I started the birth control I was at 163 pounds, then the next 3 weeks I climbed up to 168 pounds, then stayed at about 166. So, I stopped taking my birth control last week to have my period and I dropped down to 161 pounds as of this morning. I'm terrified that when I start taking it again tomorrow my weight will go up again like it did before. Anyone else deal with this? I had an iud before, and I can't use it bc I had too many complications. I don't want to get my tubes tied bc I might want more babies in a couple of years. Help!!!

    Weight?

You should be ok....I also have BCBS Fed insurance, was up a few lbs on my 2nd weigh in, then lost like a pound or 2 on my third weigh in, and I was still approved. Granted, my pre-surgery BMI was 42, and I had high BP for years, but I think the BCBS Fed is one of the better carriers for approvals. Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App
  25. Hi All, I had weight loss surgery (gastric sleeve) in 2009 with a starting weight of about 390. I lost about 100 lbs and today weight 280 (275 on a good day). I went through a period of re-gaining during 2012-2013 and decided to join Weight Watchers before I re-gained everything. I joined WW at 350 lbs in the Spring of 2013. Withing about 1.5 years I dropped 75 lbs, bringing me to my current weight. I'm still a WW member but have not lost additional weight in about the last year or so. I've just maintained. I wanted to provide this background information since it might be helpful, but my (desperate) desire to have a brachioplasty began as a child. Large, nearly deformed upper arms run in my family, and I have never once in my pre-teen, teen or adult years shown my upper arms in public. At every school dance or wedding, I wore a shawl (literally sewn to my dress so that it could never slip off). Every time I have worn a bathing suit, I've worn a t-shirt over it. Even at my lowest adult weight (in college) of 180 lbs, I never dared show my arms. My arms are a significant source of grief for me. The sight of them makes me sad. Even the thought of them makes me sad. They limit what I can wear beyond what I'm already limited to as a plus size shopper. The arms of shirts are often too tight to fit me, or they are so thin/fitted that my mammouth mounds of flesh show right through. I don't even wear short sleeve shirts, only shits that are at least elbow-length cover enough of my arm to make me feel comfortable in public. Getting back to my weight journey: I see myself losing additional weight, at some point in the future. Maybe 50 lbs. But my current focus is on maintaining, and I'm fed up with these arms. I decided to return to the BP community to get information, insight and referrals. Can anyone recommend a surgeon in the Chicago area? Am I going to be completely black balled because of my weight? I am including several pictures here. Thank you, Nina
