Post Op Week 4 Anxiety (long but a great read!! Lol)
sleevedbaddie replied to sleevedbaddie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you. My panic just kinda came on suddenly last night. I think I’ve just been ignoring it the past couple weeks. I should celebrate making it this far but it’s been a strain mentally. I’ll try to focus on just drinking when I can. Protein is pretty easy because I have a routine. The water is just the drain -
So a tip my nutritionist told me was take pea size bite every minute. It has helped me meet my Protein goals. 😊

2 weeks & 5 days post op and I'm doing great
Gatorade w/protein makes me gag now. I think from having so much of it.
I had the ricotta bake for a few days. I'm in the puree stage but rotisserie chicken, chicken meatballs, cold cuts, & plain tuna don't bother me.
I had a plain old fashioned peppermint and it made me nauseous...

Hi,
Hang in there, it looks like you're going really well in your recovery phase.
One thing, don't be shy in coming out to ask the Dietitian for more meal plan ideas that suit your surgery... and the gagging and feeling of wanting to vomit will pass.
🥸👌

Once you loose some weight and begin to get more active you will tire yourself out. You may have a lower sugar diet than before and less carbs so you will naturally have less energy. Your meds may not be absorbing the same as before. Its all a new learning curve and some people think its a easy option! To change your status - Go to the top to the page, where your name is. Click on the little down triangle. You get some options, choose surgery.

Post Op Week 4 Anxiety (long but a great read!! Lol)

You are doing fine. Its hard for most people to be able to do the amount of water needed. Its strange to put so much focus on ourselves. I have always put others before myself, husband, children, parents and even pets. Having to focus so hard on water and vitamins was so different to my norm . Then Poof one day you wake up and its easier. Just do your best and take a drink to bed with you, if you wake have a drink. This intense stage does not last forever, even though it feels that way. Protein yogurts were a life saver/ wonder food for me. Once I found these I could meet my protein goals so easy. You are bound to be anxious, its all new and bewildering at first. Its worth the hard work in the end -
I understand I haven't even had my surgery yet, and I'm on my strict liquids right now and this is the hardest thing i ever had to do, my son-in-law was in the kitchen cooking two ribeye steaks and I was like my God I could lick the air and I had to go in my room and put a mask on to keep from smelling the steaks, I made my grandchildren sloppy joes it took everything in my power not to just go up in there and just eat it out the pan, so I understand those Temptations are so hard but I fault through it fight through it, as mentioned above in another comment you're not the only. My Birthday was 2 days ago and I was drinking on chicken broth and protein shakes, as bad as I wanted to break and have me some wings and fries. You're not alone, sorry for the long post.

Vaping and WLS
New To This23 replied to Eyoung222's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi, So I am a former smoker/vaper I quit about two months before I decided to enter the program. My insurance would not cover any part of the program if I was still using nicotine. I can tell you that starting up exercise really helped me with not smoking/vaping, like, it helped me a lot and I did not gain any extra weight, in fact I lost weight. I quit cold turkey, but that was because I wanted to get past the nicotine withdrawal as fast as I could. I do not know the program you are on but I would ask the Doctor to clarify about weight gain during your 6-month period and not go by what your friend said, even though they had the same Doctor. Your journey and your friend's journey will probably be similar having the same Doctor and all, but they won't be exactly the same. So, just give them a call or send a message if you have that option on your portal, which should help ease your mind. Hopefully this help. -
Post Op Week 4 Anxiety (long but a great read!! Lol)
sleevedbaddie posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I downloaded this app tonight because I had a really strong a visceral panic attack about getting the surgery. I’m 4 weeks post surgery today (6/9) and as I’m immersing myself more into regular life I’m feeling anxious about meeting my water and protein goals. And all around, what I’ve done to myself lol. Being in the house and managing recovery and eating is so easy, but it’s summer and I have many trips planned. My first real trip after surgery was this week (still currently on it). I took my daughter to an inclusive resort so she could enjoy herself. So far, it’s been easy physically. I’m not experiencing anything bad. However, packing food for it was really difficult because I’m still in an early phase for food (blended/purée). So it’s not easy to meal prep blended or puréed meals for a 3 day trip when there aren’t many options or access to a kitchen. I will say, eating isn’t an issue for me. I’ve been blessed in my journey and experience thus far and know I will be throughout the rest of my life. It’s the water portion, though. I really don’t want to be hospitalized for any reason; dehydration, eating certain things or too much come to mind when I think about it. I’m doing the best I can. I don’t meet the water goal everyday anymore (minimum 50 ounces) and that makes me scared. I’m just feeling a lot of anxiety. In the beginning I didn’t have a “regret” phase, but I guess it just waited to hit me until now. I know it may get easier, but it’s not right now and it’s making me both scared and just hyper aware of my existence/physical needs. I did the research I could and briefly read studies, watched people’s experiences throughout their journeys and spoke to people. I just didn’t expect all of the prep and intentional work I have to put in each day to sustain myself. Especially in these early days. As I write this, I’m reminding myself that I’m not even a month out so I can’t expect easy or to not feel a way. It’s just where I’m at right now. Any words of encouragement or pointers are greatly appreciated. -
I had my surgery a few days ago and generally feel good. My appetite is a little "off" which I guess is good, since I'm subsisting on a clear liquid diet and just added protein drinks per the surgeon's office. I have had difficulty sleeping for a long time; I used to attribute it to stress, but I retired several years ago and live a pretty stress-free life. I did my usual cocktail of Diazepam plus Mirtazapine which usually puts me down (the Mirtazapine is the one that usually kicks hard- I often don't want to get up and am groggy so I typically take 1/2 a 7.5 mg dose). It's ok for now because I'm not teaching the semester and can make appointments later in the morning or afternoon. But, here's the kicker: I did my usual dosing and still could not fall asleep last night. I find it hard to believe that my metabolic system has changed this quickly after surgery. Which prompts me to ask: among those of you who suffer from insomnia, what do you use that does not leave you groggy in the morning? tia Deep6 PS: dumb admin question but how do I change my avatar box to read post-op rather than pre-op now that I've just had the surgery? Thanks again!

It's best to get clearance from your doctor. That said.. my program suggests starting weight training 6 weeks out. 2xs a week and advance from there. No maxing out or pushing to muscle failure. Lift enough to feel a burn but stop if you feel any sharp pain, experience chest pressure, nausea or extreme shortness of breath. I haven't started weights yet myself but have been cleared to. I had hernia repair same time as RNY. So I'm pacing myself. I am easing into exercise with walking on my treadmill or outside, weather permitting. Also just started using my exercise bike today. 6 miles. I do cardio 5x a week but eventually I will shift that to concentrate more on strength training since I think we will benefit more from that in the long run. I used to drink an ACV drink daily before surgery to help control reflux and blood sugar levels. Apple cider vinegar is actually not acid once consumed. Instead, it has an alkaline effect on the body when taken internally. Post-surgery I will still pour it over a salad but no longer really feel I need it. As for loose skin, I still believe autophagy/fasting can repair cells and improve collagen production but that is no longer an option for me diet wise. I chose RNY and so will rely on my new tool and follow those guidelines. For now anyway. Good luck and stay strong.

May 2023 surgeries
dIsLosingIt replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass 5/17 and I’m doing well. Walking 2-3miles every other day, drinking flavored water throughout the day to stay hydrated, took my first set of vitamins today (not bad), trying to eat slowly. So far i have eaten turkey burger, tuna with light mayo, pureed chili, yogurt, scrambled eggs with cheddar, protein drinks. 3 of my 6 incisions have begun to heal (glue fell off) and the others are itching. I had my first experience with food getting stuck in my chest.. I thought i was dying. No more dry turkey burgers for me😩 I hope everyone is doing well. -

That's awesome Lipman! My stall looks to be over with a 1 kilogram/2.2 pound loss. Protein been stressing me out, it's so hard at this stage when you don't do shakes and aren't a fan of powders and are vegetarian. Even protein drinks are ick now, just too sweet. I can't wait for normal foods, been saving high protein recipes. I'll go back and update our list soon as there's a few names missing. I'd love to know how @Synlee is going. -

Good luck on your surgery date. Met my surgeon yesterday. He put me on a pre-op diet . 2 protein drinks and one 400-500 cal dinner and only liquids 2 days prior to surgery. June 19 surgery . I am so nervous but excited now . It’s getting real . -
First of all, congrats on your success so far! That's GREAT! However, Apple Cider Vinegar will have no impact to how or where you lose weight, the elasticity of your skin, or make any other material impacts to your loss or body. It might be helpful for digestion or other things, but it truly will not add anything to your weight loss efforts. As for weight lifting, most surgeons have a recommended waiting period before working out again, so you need to check with your doctors. Weight lifting WILL help in myriad ways and it CAN help reduce saggy skin by filling it with muscle, but it won't change the skin itself. The reality is, lose skin is a byproduct of major weight loss. It will happen. The extent of it will vary widely from person to person for a million different reasons. There is very little with any scientific support to be done about it, and most of the recmondtations you might get will be anecdotal at best. Hit your protein, drink your water, lift weights, and be patient. Whatever lose skin you may have will NEVER be more detrimental than not having changed your life.

@KD in CT- the surgery is almost the least of it- you'll spend far more time getting sign offs, sitting in doctor's offices waiting and getting tests done, no one of which takes much time, but cumulatively, seems to take forever. Realistically, though, it was only several months. No real pain either- I'm on one of these advanced pain relief protocols that does not involve any dope and though I'm not a tough guy on pain, I haven't experienced much at all. A little soreness if I bend, but otherwise, it's working. Now embarking on liquid diet- the pre-op diet I was on was lo cal, hi protein but normal food in smaller portions until the 14th day- then liquid. They made this easy. -
Hello everyone, My surgery is on June 16. I'm more excited than anything else. I started the journey at 328 lbs and one week in the preop diet (two protein shakes, 4 oz of lean meat and unlimited non-starchy veggies per day) I am at 315 lbs. You all are an inspiration and I love reading through everyone's posts. Keep up the good work everyone!

I have been vacillating for almost two years about having weight loss surgery. I’m still SO anxious! My surgery is next Wednesday, the 14th. I am on my 1000 calorie/mostly protein shake pre-surgery diet. I am already missing food. I am looking forward to not having hunger pains and pangs. I wish everyone a successful surgery, uneventful recovery and continuing success!

Protein bars on soft foods
pintsizedmallrat replied to LindsayT's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
You're probably going to have a much easier time sticking with shakes or liquids during this phase than bars. Most of them are pretty chewy. I do know that there are some protein puddings out there if you're sick of drinking things, but I would probably hold off on bars for a while. -
Once you get to the eat all stage, Amazons own Amfit bars are great. Low cal, low cost and high protein. I always carry one in my bag. For you, just now I would recommend thick soups and protein yogurts.

OK, had the gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair on June 6, spend the night in the hospital. Was actually able to sleep without normal sleeping drugs- because I was exhausted- got up at 3:30am to head to hospital and I think the trauma of surgery wiped me out. But, it went well- all work was done laparoscopically without the need to open me up (I was told that was a possibility if they could not do it all laproscopically). I'm now on a full liquid diet. Pain relief is accomplished without any opioids- using gabapentin, Tylenol and Celebrex. Am supposed to refrain from any protein drinks for 3 days after surgery and will start adding vitamin supplements after first (2-4 weeks) phase. There was very little bleeding (I got off blood thinners several days before surgery). I'm surprised at how good I feel- I did take a long nap after I got home- but did a fair amount of walking today (the first day after surgery). Since I am now post-op, should I start another thread or just continue this one? Thanks for your support. All the folks at the hospital and surgical team were very helpful, pleasant, they even have a discharge lounge to enable those who rely on ride shares to be picked up in a dedicated driveway. (My wife helped here with visits and transportation). -
Try spreading your meds out across the day and yes definitely look into other vitamin formulations as others have suggested. Some even come in a spray - one squirt under the tongue -easy. A teaspoon of liquid at a time every couple of minutes is pretty much the way we’re all like. Sip, sip, sip. Keep your drink next to you at all times. I even sipped during the night & still do. I too found warm drinks easier to tolerate - more soothing. I even warmed my shakes. You’ll find it easier to meet your fluid & protein goals over the next couple of weeks when you’re more healed. My surgeon said as long as I was making an effort & getting closer he was happy. Don’t forget your shakes & soups, broths, etc. all count towards your fluid goal. Your skin dryness could be from the anaesthetic. It’s likely not from not meeting your fluid goal unless you’re a long way off your goal. Especially if you’re not experiencing any symptoms of dehydration as well (dry mouth tongue & lips, rarely or not peeing, dark & strong smelling urine, rapid heart rate &/or breathing, extreme thirst, irritable, confused, headaches, dizziness & lethargy - though the last three can be part of your recovery). If you have any of these symptoms seek medical help as soon as possible. You’ll get through this. Just give yourself time to heal & work out how best to manage everything for you.

Plans are different but I wasn’t allowed protein bars until I reached goal. (I eat them pretty regularly now to ensue I get the extra protein I need in.) In a pinch they’re possibly okay - check the sugar & artificial sweeteners & protein content though as many are no more than candy bars. Maybe keep a packet of instant soup in your bag & order a hot tea with the tea bag on the side at a cafe & make up the soup. Or grab a yoghurt from store. Check with your team for options for those never ending busy days.

You got one of your children to cook? Well done. Mothers everywhere are envious. Obviously not your vegan child though or are they off the wagon again? That’s the thing I sometimes dream of - a burger. Well specifically an Australia steak burger on a crunchy crust roll, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, beetroot, onions optional & BBQ sauce. Mmmm. Drooling.
