  1. Hi, I just joined the group. My daughter suggested it as she herself is a successful 5 year RNY bypass patient. From watching her I kind of know pretty much what to expect. The good and the bad. I am 57 years old and a single parent. As for myself, I didn't really start to have a weight problem until after having kids. Through the years the weight slowly piled on. On top of that I developed type 2 insulin dependent diabetes in my late 30's. My youngest was born after I became diabetic. I also have several other chronic conditions as well. The last 3 years I have been in and out of the hospital with septicemia, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, diabetic foot ulcers, two partial toe amputations on both feet and diabetic ketoacidosis. It has roughly been every 4-6 months that I've been in the hospital for at least 1 1/2 to 2 weeks followed by 4-6 weeks of IV meds via PICC line plus home nurse visits, OT and PT visits. It's only been the last 5 months that my blood sugars have really been under control and that my feet have been healed. I was finally able to go and see the bariatric surgeon and start the process to finally reach the goal of having RNY gastric bypass surgery. I received my surgery date approximately 3 weeks ago. I am now on the last day and a half of my liquid diet before surgery. the Protein powder that my daughter gave me is disgusting (she just laughed and told me to get used to it. HA) and is difficult for me to choke down. I need to try different brands to find one that is more palatable for me. My biggest problem is that I have healthy (I am a good cook, like to cook and like to eat and enjoy food) eating habits. It's just that my portions are way too big compounded by the last 3 years of not being able to walk as the wound care doctors wanted me off my foot as much as possible. So, I became more sedentary. And, voila! I gained weight and couldn't lose it. So here I am and the big day is almost here. My daughter will be taking me to the hospital and staying with me. My son-in-law will come to the hospital after the kids go to school. He's staying home with the kids while my daughter stays with me for a week. My oldest son will be coming also to the hospital. My youngest son isn't (both of my sons are autistc) sure yet. My neighbor will cook and watch over my sons for me until I come home. Now that I've introduced myself, I'd love to hear from others. I am extremely excited and a little nervous. But it won't be long. Monday morning at 5:30am. I've also been thinking about the walking and eating. Anyone else having surgery on the 1st? Anyone willing to be buddies with me?

    Help?!?

I had that feeling and I didn't feel better until i threw it up. I'm not sure what other options you have but that was the relief for me. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I followed the doctors orders for the most part. Protein shake for bfast and lunch and a reasonable meal for dinner. For dinner I did either chicken or fish with lots of veggies. Also lots of Water for both weeks. Halfway through I surprised my wife with a trip to Paris... while I was there I did cheat a little and have wine... a lot of wine... and some french bread carbs. But got right back on track. I was 20 pounds lighter in 2 weeks. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
  6. I was sleeved on Wednesday the 29th and have had the most amazing and easy recovery. No gas pains at all, and only a little pain around my biggest incision which I only really feel when standing and sitting. I've had no nausea and have been able to drink Water with no problems since the night of surgery. It's been wonderful! Today (4 days post-op) is the first day I'm really eating anything. My surgeons instructions are to eat 2 oz of Soup, yogurt, pudding or cream of wheat 3 times a day. And to drink water and Protein shakes in between, to get the needed protein. After Breakfast (2 oz yogurt) and lunch (2 oz pudding) and my cup of decaf coffee with a splash of milk, my total calories added up to a whopping 87. ???? I am now drinking a Protein shake made with milk to add to my numbers, but dinner will be another 40 calories or so. By the end of the day, I will be lucky if I hit 400 calories. Nowhere in my literature from my surgeon does it mention a calorie goal. Does this low amount seem normal?

That is amazing success story I kinda feel the same being 1week out tomorrow. I have ate egg whites for lunch and went on a 2 mile walk with my dogs today and am feeling pretty swell. I think as long as get your protein and water in the egg whites with milk is the same as soup broth
  8. Does anyone know about taking meds post surgery? They say nothing larger than a regular aspirin, but I take Omeprazole that's in a capsule. Great time to think of this-two days before surgery! Can I just open the capsule and sprinkle the med in my protein or whatever?
  9. What protein shakes/powders do you think taste the best?

    Trouble getting in more calories

I think you are on the right track, but I also had to add in a Protein bar, many days (some days I can eat more, some days I can not - same foods. no idea why) I do like the power crunch triple chocolate bar. my weight loss had stalled, when I added in the bar I started loosing again. although if you want to stay with whole foods, perhaps a boiled egg as a snack would do well. wrap that cheese stick in a slice of deli meat maybe? just a couple of ideas.
  11. FYI-- I called my doc for advice about avoiding constipation and his nurse said take Miralax twice a day. They don recommend taking fiber because it fills you up and you risk not getting to your protein and nutrient goal.

I just started on regular adderall it's helping...it's not a magic fix for me but it is helping...I have started a few projects around the house to put my mind on other things. 13. Hey there everyone, I'm about a week and a half out (liquid diet with Protein shakes, non creamy Soups, and Greek yogurt). Before my surgery, I lost 45 lbs on my own; now I'm sitting at home with 6 belly scars wondering how much weight is going to come off and when it's going to decide to do so. I know that everyone is different so I'm just speaking generally. How much did you lose and what was the time frame? I'm not impatient (my surgery date was a year in the making) just curious. Thanks

    Cruise

You can let your waiter know of any special meals requests. I've cruised a lot and have always been dieting. Right off the bat I told my waiter to please not put any carbs on my plate (rice, potatoes, etc.) I never had to remind him after that. I also asked him to never offer me dessert and he didn't. It made it a lot easier for me. I skipped the midnight chocolate buffet and walked by any other dessert offerings. As Blizair said, there's plenty of proteins everywhere.. at all meals no matter where they are served. Exercising is easy on the ship. I would walk laps on the upper deck. They have an area just for walkers and runners. Nothing like walking as you look out over the ocean. I'm sure you'll have a blast! Enjoy!
  18. My clear diet does not include any protein. I did it two days pre-op and I'm in the middle of the 8 days post-op. I look forward to going back to full liquids.
  19. Jessica, it all depends on your doctor. Mine has me on a 10 liquid diet, where I can only have protein drinks like premier, broth, water. Yours has you on a three day so I don't know. Who is your Doctor?
  20. I'm 4 weeks now and I have only lost 22 pounds since before my surgery included. Since 4/12 that's all ive lost. I do weigh myself everyday and nothing no loosing. I'm scared this is it. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the protein down, but I do have other proteins. Like cottage cheese, beans, LENTILs any ideas what u guys did to keep losing. I want to be a loser to not a gainer. All you guys sound like u guys are doing great.

Went For My 2 Month Postop Yesterday

it happens, dont worry about it.One thing my surgeon always says, dont weigh yourself everyday,it can be misleading, and stress you out unnecssarily.Just make sure you are getting all your protein and liquids everyday, and if instructed to do so,all your vitamins and minerals, which i do faithfully eveyday. this too will pass:)

    My Fitness Pal

I us my fitness pal religiously to track food. I also have a fit bit which syncs well with it. I do not compensate for exercise or activity, I guess my philosophy is that I see the activity as a bonus. I do expect I will have to adjust protein intake in the future as I adjust exercise levels particularly with strength training.
  23. I am so excited I can't wait for my surgery. I am freaking out because two weeks before I had to start the pre-op diet we went on vacation...I gained 8 pounds.....I have lost 10 since...but am afraid I won't lose enough before my surgery....I have my pre-op visit for labs this Tuesday....I am exercising and am on 2-3 protein shakes and one meal no more than 350 calories....I am stressing......

    Protein Tablets

They do exist (just do a search on Protein tablets). However, they only offer a very small amount of protein in each tablet (usually 1-2 grams) and are really not much use.

    Healthy living after Band surgery

All of the above advice is excellent, the only thing I would add is to keep a few healthy snacks with you at all times. This kept me from eating something I shouldnt be eating even if it was only a few bites. I was not a perfect eater, and still aren't , but having healthy snacks when out Im out is always a good option. Depending on what stage you're at, yogurt, a protein drink, cottage cheese, nuts, raw veggies, fruit slices are some favorites. Good luck !!
