If I knew then what I know now-
limase63 replied to baribabe72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not everyone "can't eat" at first. Be prepared for damaged nerves to inhibit your "full" sensation and ask what your maximum input on food should be. Just bc you can eat it doesn't mean you should. You can damage stomach if you don't restrict yourself. Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App -
All surgeons/practices vary a little, but when I got my insurance approval (bcbs fed), the doc office called me, scheduled me for the pre-op meeting w/NUT and surgeon, and it was at that meeting they gave me my surgery date (which ended up getting moved closer about a week later, I assume from cancellations and/or reshuffling surgeon's schedule). Pre-op meeting NUT goes over all pre/post op diet instructions and surgeon goes over all risks/benefits, etc. Write down any and all questions you have for either doc or nut, cause that's your opportunity to get answers. Good luck! Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App

I was recently admitted to the hospital because I was feeling back pain, that radiated over to my left ovary and down my leg. Once the pain went down my leg, I went to the ER. Once there waited for tests, while I was in the fetal position in a lot of pain. They said it was a torsion cyst (when a cyst is cutting blood supply from ovary) and they wanted to operate and remove cyst and since ovary was enlarged and about same size, they probably would've taken it out too. Good news; no operation and I have my ovaries. It was scary, but thank goodness everything turned out ok. Once there since I had a couple of cysts they diagnosed me with PCOS. When I was a much heavier person, I as diabetic, and well I almost never had my periods; maybe 3 or 5 times a year. I have never broken out, I have a son and he will be 8 in October. I haven't tried again to have another child. I do not have a lot of facial hair. Since I lost the weight; diabetes is resolved. I was told PCOS is my diagnosis but I am hesitant bc all I have are the cysts?! OB said this to me and placed me on birth control for the next 3 months. I am wondering if this OB is correct, or should I see an endocrinologist and if this surgery cure DIABETES, doesn't it mean another diagnosis (especially PCOS would be healable.) This MD as I mentioned placed me on birth control every 3 months. I have 5 days worth of period. they are heavy and i do crap occasionally. Nothing major. I am reading other peoples post and I am wondering if this is correct. I think I will check with A Endocrinologist; I AM JUST ignorant when it comes to this. I feel like my best is an endocrinologist. Please any thoughts or commons; highly appreciated.

Hi everyone, first post. I'm scheduled for my sleeve next Friday (10/7) and I went today and was told by the cardiologist that my stress test was "abnormal." He recommended we do nuclear testing. I'm hoping it was bc I stopped the test before I reached my optimum heartbeat (they wanted me at 168!). I was short of breath (duh! This is why I'm getting sleeved!) makes me worry a bit I've waited almost 6 months and cleared every other test... anyone else have this issue and get cleared after the nuclear testing? I really want to be sleeved and can't imagine living in this giant body forever. I've been imagining the outcome and to be denied at this point would really put me down. Did I eat too much?
francesalisha79 replied to francesalisha79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have small children LOL. I was feeding them at the same time I was trying to eat. It was dinner time. Once I got them fed, I finished, hence the 50 minute time span. I just had the same thing for dinner tonight and finished the 3 oz of tuna in 30 mins. I don't know why I think it's so strange that I eat 3 oz and don't feel stuffed, but for some reason I feel like I shouldn't be able to eat that much yet. What's the skinny on coffee?
rubia72 replied to The New Kel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved last March and was never able to give up coffee ☕️ maybe that's why my weight has come off so slow. But I think my Puerto Rican mama breast fed me coffee because if I stop taking it I get horrible headaches [emoji19] -

Same BS with me. And this girl kept telling me the stuff I should eat and how I should eat at least 1800 calories, blah blah - despite the fact that I told her repeatedly that I had a nutritionist that I worked with. She would just say "well ask your nutritionist about this" and then "what did the NUT say". Every time I would tell her that her advice did not apply in my circumstance. She just kept on and on. Once my paid sessions were done, I moved on. Very frustrating.... -

You've had it rough. :-(. Have you looked into ablation? I'm off my BC pills for surgery and am a miserable b***h already- I can't imagine what I'll be like for pre-op diet and post-op. Yes I have looked at ablation. I'd have to travel to a specialist, but probably next year. I refused to go off bcp. The risk was worth it for those 2 pain free weeks. Hang in there girl!!

What's the skinny on coffee?
Bufflehead replied to The New Kel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Coffee isn't a no no for me! Most of my fluid intake is black coffee, I rarely drink water. No issues with acid or ulcers, great weight loss, happy, healthy, perfectly hydrated (the idea that coffee will dehydrate you is a myth as per published scientific studies -- anyone tries to sell you on that BS, tell them to SHOW YOU THE SCIENCE -- they can't!). -

Here was my plan.... I was in school full time so I left before my surgery now I decided I want to move in a different direction of schooling and it would be online. Well with doing online I could get a full time job. Well I have applied everywhere and can't get one I am a hard worker. So I can't understand why no one wants me to work for them. My resume is perfect and been checked my a professional. I have gotten three interviews but all chosen by others. Is it bc I'm still fat? My answers to the questions arnt good enough? Or they pic their friends and family members over me.... It's just really sad iv been looking for a month everyday applying to 3 or more jobs a day Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

If it's like what o had its the diet class of the five day liquid pre op and what you eat after the stages it's not the same as all the other dietitian visits bc it's more specific to the surgery. Don't know if that's what your going to but that's what my final pre op class is

I quit smoking the day I met with the surgeon bc he told me it increased my chances for a blood clot after surgery. That scared me enough to quit. I never picked up again. My surgery is next Thursday and I've been smoke free over 2 months. Good luck but your capable of quitting. Its all a mind game!! Sent from my LGLS770 using the BariatricPal App

was one of my orthopedic doctors than finally recommended bariatric surgery, and did it in a very honest, but direct way. He sympathized with me saying he understood that it was incredibly difficult, and that most people really are not able to it on their own in the long run. He even mentioned that telling me I need to lose weight was of really no value as I was obviously an intelligent man and knew this. He went on to inform me that if I continued as I was, I would become disabled. And not many years down the road, but soon. He said I would most likely be in a wheelchair in less than 10 years, and that I would struggle with the surgeries I needed and the recovery. Then he suggested I consider bariatric surgery - again noting it was a big decision, but that perhaps I start by going and talking with a surgeon to learn more. Now THAT is a helpful approach - at least for me. Showing care and compassion goes a long way in having your message heard. Being educated on obesity helps as well. Strangely enough, that was my wake up call. When I was as the Sugar Bowl (irony indeed) I showed some stroke like symptoms which scared the hell out of me. My PCD didn't see any problem, but because I was seeing weird lights in my vision, I saw my eye doc, she was an old friend and she had a great heart to heart talk with me...she said "look these are just warning lights on your dashboard. You need to get your weight down, or you are going to be diabetic and have other problems." That got me on the path to begin to seriously work at losing weight. After 6 months of trying at WW, I ran across a pod cast where they talked about WLS and the Cleveland Clinic study of long term success, and they said something I had never heard before...'the success rate for behavior modification was less than 5%, but surgery was over 70%.' I remember saying BS, but they were dead on right. That's when I started looking into WLS. So those of you in the medical profession, sometimes, we patients do listen. You might be the SMC (sudden moment of clarity) for another human being. You don't know. No one does. But keep up the earnest work.

I found a way to get my protein in! Yay!
gustavio replied to gustavio's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I bought some unflavored protein. Gene pro is 30g of protein per tablespoon and I mix it with 1 shot of my choice of beverage. Hold my nose and throw it back like I'm taking a good ol shot of tequila. I do this 3 times a day which equals 90g of protein plus whatever protein I'm taking in from food. This is the only way I can reach my goal because I cannot do the shakes. I tried and tried and they go down like broken glass. They are terrible. Which before surgery I had no problem with them. After surgery--no way Jose. I know this is repeating my original post but I wasn't sure if you seen it. Try it, it turned everything around for me. More energy, more weight loss, etc. liquid? I have no problem with bc I am always thirsty. Love my G2 Gatorade or water with lemon. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
How did you decide?

Haven't read all the replies yet so pardon me if this is repetitive, but I think you need to add FAT, not more Protein or carbs to your diet. When you add more protein your body treats it just like carbs - it stimulates insulin to store it as fat in your liver, whereas fat is burned directly. Yes, they need to be healthy fats, but that includes saturated fat as well. Research is now confirming what our grandparents knew instinctively, that fat from healthy meat (grass-fed, not grain-fed) and saturated fatty oils are much better than the polyunsaturated garbage that has been the mainstay of our diet for the last 30 years. Coconut oil, MCT oil, butter from grass-fed cows, duck fat, the skin off truly free-range chickens. Of course as WLS patients we have to modify things a bit from typical keto/LCHF simply b/c we can't eat nearly the volumes others can. But I would go back to your previous level of protein, increase your Water, and just add 100 calories of pure fat - try Bulletproof coffee for a yummy way, or make coconut fat bombs as a treat. (Google, there are tons of recipes for both)

I broke up with my boyfriend a couple months prior to surgery and now I'm just shy of 10 weeks post op and dating again. Soooo birth control hasn't been an issue, but I'm now 5 dates into dating someone nice and thinking I should probably start considering BC. I didn't lose 36 pounds to get pregnant 3 months out!
