Sleeve Or Lap Band? How Do I Decide Which Is Best For Me?
traceyinflorida replied to kflan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would look in several places for information...on this forum read throught the posts under lap band to sleeve revisions. Read Sleeve success stories. Also search for post about would you do it again on this forum to get the pros and cons of sleeve. Then go to the Lap Band forum and read the success stories, but also search for posts for the struggles people are having. I would look at success rates, weight loss totals, long term weight loss maintenance and complications. Finally I would ask your surgeon. My two cents. I was planning on getting the lap band. Several reasons I chose sleeve instead: 1. better overall percentage of weight loss with sleeve vs band 2. faster weight loss with sleeve vs band 3. no maintenence (fills, unfills etc.) on sleeve 4. no foreign device in my body that could errode, slip or cause other complications. I am 11 years older than you and had starting weight of 272 at 5'9". I had no health issues other than mild sleep apnea and being overweight. I am glad I made the choice I did. -
Sleeve Or Lap Band? How Do I Decide Which Is Best For Me?
kssooner2 replied to kflan's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
okay here are my two cents worth. I was banded in 07 i am down 190 pounds.. I started at 424 and was 42 years old. The band "saved my life" i still have 50 or 60 pounds i want / need to loose. I started talking to my RN friend who also turned into a coordinatior for our Doctor, about getting plastics in next year and what the costs would be and what would be able to do. When i had my band, they were doing 20-25 bands a week plus other surgeries. They are now removing 5-7 a week going to sleeve or bypass. so 25% are revising now. there are complications coming out and she says now that it is not if there will be issues but when. the band will fail and if it does it could be and ER surgery. So on October 16th, i will be going in for a revision. Praying that I am ready for those wonderful 30 days of liquids and mushys!!! Good luck with your decision it is a life changer! -
^^^ explains the differences between the sleeve & plication. plication is an unknown, experimental procedure that folds the stomach.. it can cause scarring, ulcers, and other stuff & if you have complications, they don't know if they can fix it or switch it over to a different surgery (like the sleeve or bypass). it also sounds really painful, because the doctor said that the stomach can get so inflamed that it rips itself open from the sitches which requires another surgery. i'd rather have the sleeve.. the sleeve also helps with dealing with physical hunger. hope that helped. but to answer your question.. you're not crazy to want help with your weight problem.. but i don't think that you're very big.. you could eat healthy- which you would have to do if you got surgery anyway- and exercise.. and your problem would be taken care of.. but there are people who have this surgery that are 200lb.. i mean.. i dunno your specific situation, but if i weighed 200lb, i would be pretty happy & look forward to exercising to get the rest of it off & not having to worry about excess skin & stuff.... but you know what they say.. different strokes for different folks. one thing you may consider, instead of surgery, would be going to mexico, canada or europe & having that gastric balloon thing put in your stomach.. http://www.obesitysurgerycentre.com/procedures-right-for-you/gastric-balloon/ << there's info on that procedure. what they do is put a silicone balloon in your stomach & fill it with saline or air & it makes your stomach small, like if you were to have had a gastric bypass or sleeve.. it's fully reversable, too.. only down side that i've read is that it can only stay in your stomach for 6 months.. but.. you could be to your goal by then & it'd be easier to maintain your weight... so something to consider! good luck to you, whatever you decide to do!

Stupid Question Re Liver
IsB replied to ShrinkyDinkMe22's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's good enough reason to follow instructions and stay on that pre-op diet. Missing a little solid food is nothing compared with what happens if they do have complications because of an enlarged liver. -
Thank you! That is so helpful. I hope your complications have eased up and you are doing well!

IDK anything on plication but I had read some things on it that were not 'great.' I honestly don't recall what. I did sleeve as I am and was a huge eater. I use food for more things than hunger and I still struggle with that. I'm a work in progress. I wasn't "huge" as most ppl would say "omg you don't need surgery!" but they didn't know how I ate. They didn't know that food really felt like it controlled me. I hate to say that, it sounds pathetic, but I am an addict. It's the only "drug of choice" that you can't 'just quit'... and every day is always going to be something to work at. This tool helps me work it. I didn't do RNY (gastric bypass) as I didn't want to reroute my plumbing and to be honest dumping scares me. I love sweets, or loved them prior to my sleeve, and I was scared I'd do that once and get dumping and want to die. I am the 1% of sleevers that have had complications. I have had pneumonia after my surgery then a leak and revision to my suture line. It was not the most enjoyable experience; however, I don't regret the surgery - most days! I am 90 lbs and counting lost since March. I worry on the long term 'will I be successful' because surgery is a tool, not a magic wand that will 'fix' you. Depression, eating for solace, etc are issues that having this surgery will NOT fix. However, this surgery has made it possible where I go out to eat and after 4 or 5 bites, I am "done" and satisfied. I can eat 700-900 calories a day and be ok with it, where I used to balk at that extreme makeovers show that put everyone on a 1200 calorie restriction diet. Do your research, decide what is best for you. Should you want to know more about sleeve, this is obviously the place to be. But research your options. I do think DO IT! (whatever surgery you decide, especially if you have struggled with weight for your lifetime as I have) I am 38 and I hope that I will be successful for the remainder of whatever my lifetime might be so that diabetes, cancer, heart disease - all of which have killed my family - won't get me. But remember... I AM still a "work in progress"..... it's a tool and every day I still have to push myself to make good choices and not beat myself up when I slip. Part of this journey, for me, is about forgiving myself for things.... I am trying to work on my head issues. Support groups with this surgery has helped! (you might attend a few of whatever surgery you are considering for face to face input as well) Best wishes!

God, I spent all of two weekendsago begging my sister not to call the police. Finally on Monday, I took myself because I felt such deep comfort after I had my plan figured out. I knew I couldn't do it to my family. But that's how deep the pain was and I didn't have food to bury it. I never had any issues before, experienced it all post op. My food addiction and severe fear of complications is driving me mad. You may feel a billion times better post op as the weight falls but if your not prepared to tackle your food addiction it will haunt you as does for me. Please seek counselling to tackle this decision don't rely on your mind to make this decision. You need an objective voice to challenge you.

Its taking a toll on me

It isn't that complicated. You seem to have been unlucky enough to have a poorly defined program. -
Greetings from Australia... freaking out!
NeedaBreak4Me replied to NeedaBreak4Me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Its strange though... Im expecting everything to be more complicated. I dont have any issues swallowing (im on the pureed stage) since i left hospital 2 days ago... I can eat... drink.. have had pureed meat.. yoghurt... Cereal.. etc and no problems at all. BMs are regular and normal... not on any pain meds or anti nausea meds either... literally just eating and watching tv and walking. Am i the abnormal one?? Cause.i expected at least something or did i just work myself up pre op -
I had some complications pnemonia and a blood clot in my arm I am 11 days out and have been in the hospital a few times. Having said that I can say with 3 kids the hospitalization was hard but, the complications from surgery are nothing to the complications I will have in the future by staying heavy. I am so excited to think of all the things in 6 months when I've lost all this weight I am going to be able to do with them. It's worth it. Most people have small or no complications. Research YOUR surgeons complication rates and make that decision.

Low Bmi Lap Band, Is It All Worth It?
Mayasgram replied to Comet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Curious you did not tell us your weight if you can lose weight with out Lap Band save the money and do it. I understand that your self esteme and outlook is effected by your body image but judging from a low BMI in appears your not seriously overweight and you have no other complications. It makes me wonder what Dr would just schedule you for surgery so quickly ....just sayin. Lap Band is not for everyone and it is not a walk in the park. Have you had your psyche eval and met with a nutritionist. I am interested to hear what others have to say... -
My Mom Is Not Supporting My Decision
PattyGirl66 replied to JhonnieB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Because your Mother is a RN she should also know the consequences that comes along with being over 300 pounds. If you have tried and tried and you yo-yo most of your life, then something has to give. As a Mother she should be very concerned about her daughter and should be supportive in your decision. Surgeries, no matter how big or small can come with complications. Please, you can have your tonsils taken out and get a staph infection, its not just weight loss surgery. I got a total hip replaced years ago, I had my entire femur bone cut out, had my blood transfused back into me. I didn't choose to have this, it had to be done if I wanted to ever walk again. To answer your question, my family was very very supportive with my decison (especially my mother). why, because they thought my weight was killing me and was scared for my life... Best of luck to you in whatever decision you make, -
Surgery Tomorrow- So Nervous I Almost Wanna Cancel :(
sheila2050 replied to susan0178's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You must follow your gut (no pun intended), IMO. Most people are fine, a few aren't. That's all surgeries. Praying might help, although I didn't get a clear answer when I prayed about whether or not I should stick with the surgery (not for health, but financial doubts.) I am a great believer in intuition; so I would never discount that. But fear is an entirely different animal; it can't be trusted because sometimes it will STOP you from doing the right thing rather than protect you from the wrong thing. For my part, I had no complications, only one day of intense discomfort. I feel fine now and am grateful I had an opportunity and means to have this surgery. It helps with the eating SO MUCH. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope both your outcomes are wonderful! -
I'm right there too! Monday morning-arrival at hospital 6am-I'm the docs first of the day! I'm worried about postop- you know, pain, nausea, complications. Trying to stay positive-it will all be worth it!

Dr. Kelly - Complications
brazcan replied to Tina293's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was there I met a lady who had to go to OR again to have a few staples loosened as it seems they were too tight at the entrance of the stomach. It was not a complication but something that could make her transition to solids a bit more uncomfortable. Dr. Kelly had it done without any additional costs and she was very happy with his professionalism, honesty and care. What I was told was that if the complication relates to the surgery they will take care of you at no additional cost. You can give them a call and ask these questions, put some case scenarios and see what they say. In my experience, they honor their words and it does not even have to be in writing. As for checking complications, I think there is no registry for this. What you can do is to check his credentials as a certified bariatric surgeon both in Mexico and USA. I did that and was satisfied with the results. I do not have the links here now but I got them from wasabubblebutt blog. You can do a search for her name here and go from there. I am sure you will be very satisfied. -
There's nothing better than seeing a new bandster flying through this with no complications! Congrads to you and good luck on this wild ride!

I agree with the posts about not doing anything you aren't comfortable with...I am glad you re-booked your appointment, though, because there is no harm in getting information to help you make your decision. I am petrified of surgery myself and have had some bad surgical experiences, but for me it is a choice of the greater risks of remaining morbidly obese v. surgical complication risks...not to influence you one way or the other, but I can relate also to some of the "older" people who have posted here...I turned 50 this year..when I was your age, I was obese but otherwise healthy...around age 40 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and hypertension...now I have serious complications from not controlling my diabetes and from my excessive weight...I wont' go through the comprehensive list but the ones that are presenting the gravest risks for me right now are the slow healing of some wounds and skin infections, as well as poor circulation and swelling in my legs...but it has taken me 10 years plus the development of serious complications--as well as the threat of a toe amputation--to make the decision to proceed with WLS...you will make the decision that is best for you in your own time

I ended up with 3 clots now and am on Coumadin and lovanox. I still am glad I had the surgery. I was unlucky but, when my clots resolve I will be thin and healthy. No one can make you ok with having surgery if your terrified. what we can do is support each other let you know from our experiences. My advice research research research. Make a list of every question and ask your surgeon. Every surgery has risks, some of us did get stuck with complications For me obesity has more long term risks that the sleeve surgery. For every me and iggy there are 100 everything is awesome posts. Honestly trying to choke down protein shakes and getting my liquid in is more of a hardship than the clots are at this point. Hope you make the best decision for you based on knowledge not fear. Regardless what you decide to do be comfortable with your decision.

Second guessing my decision for surgery in Mexico...
newat52 replied to Jen40's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
If your insurance excludes the surgery they typically will not cover any costs due to complications. The affordable health care act has nothing to do with this. Every policy is different. Check with your insurance company. If a major complication arose, you would be stuck there till you are well enough to travel. You raise great questions. All of self pay due to insurance exclusions had to make the choice. I did not have complication insurance. I had my surgery done state side. Believe me, I thought long and hard about the what ifs. I eventually decided to do and pray for a favorable outcome. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut. Good luck to you. You will be well informed with whatever decision you make. -
Second guessing my decision for surgery in Mexico...
lia2013 replied to Jen40's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am the health insurance manager at my company and I went over and over this with my insurance broker. The truth is, if your insurance does not cover the procedure it will most likely not cover complications. But here is the thing, it doesn't matter if you self pay for the procedure in the US, Canada or Timbuktu. Going to mexico has nothing to do with getting complications paid for or not. This fact actually helped me to decide Mexico was best for me. I researched and had total confidence in my doctor (Dr. Quinones) but with any surgery I also knew there was a chance of complications. I elected to stay in mexico a couple of extra days, thinking if anyajor complications came up Dr. Quinones could address them (at a quarter of the cost of a self pay Surgeon here in the US). I am a week out now, just got home yesterday. I feel great and have had no issues at all - not even any pain. Of course, I don't know what the future holds and I could have some kind of complication come up. If it does I will have to deal with it and I know my insurance won't cover it but again that has nothing to do with Mexico and I would have to deal with that possibility no matter where I had surgery. -
Second guessing my decision for surgery in Mexico...
JudeS replied to Jen40's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Talk to YOUR insurance about complications, I did and they don't cover it. I am battling the same thing in my head about complications ans cost/where to have it dealt with. Talk to the Doctor that is doing the surgery about his policy. -
Does anyone know what happens if you have surgery with Dr. Kelly in MEXICO and you have complications. For example, If you need to stay in hospital an extra day or two will you have to pay extra? What if you have a leak (I know the chance is very slim), will he repair it at no extra charge. I'm really afraid of complications in MEXICO because I will not be covered by insurance until I get back to Canada. I can manage to pay for the surgery but will not have much left over to cover extra medical expenses.

I realize this is a personal decision, I honestly do not know what route to go... I think BP better long term results, but it seems so drastic and I really worry about dumping syndrome and complications as well as my ability to really follow better eating habits.... I think having negative consequences of dumping might help with that, but wonder if I would decide to live with the pain just to satisfy my craving...... the sleeve seems like a more natural way to continue with life..... my doctor at first thought sleeve but the more we talk think the bypass offer me a little bit of extra help.... people use to die from this procedure and I realize that's not the case now but it scares the crap out of me... I know I want surgery I just don't know which 1 to choose... they're successes and failures with each I know it is my own choices.... socially I'd like to be able to drink a beer on occasion if I want to you know, I don't want to be on a date order something and take two bites eat like a bird either, but normal kids size person would be good I just don't know what to expect.... I have a friend who had bypass and she's great results but would have done sleeve but insurance would not pay for that, her mom had it also it is have the dumping effects but not as great results.... very stressful choice and it's a lot of money either way I go.....thx for thoughts between two surgeries

Nice honest story. Thanks for sharing. Broads on YouTube like to be dramatic for views. Period. Plus a lot of them are straight nuts. If you watch enough of their videos it is easy to figure out. Men have a stigma attached to looking weak, women don't. They whine and cry on YouTube and people baby them. The same thing happens here, people mess up and make themselves miserable with dumb choices and want other people to coddle them. I don't have a YouTube channel but I have a high pain tolerance. I had a baby, no pain meds, 10 pushes, no screaming (I wanted my baby born into a calm environment). I had VSG surgery, stopped taking pain meds as soon as I got home 28 hours later. Drove my car on day 3. Did everything for myself because I live alone. I had no complications, little pain (it just felt like I did 1000 crunches, I used to do 1000 crunches a day in HS so I know the feeling), and I was back to my regular life fairly rapidly. People that are happy and have few issues don't usually shout it, because no one cares and it also seems like you are bragging and rubbing it in to the people that are miserable. So the miserable people have the floor. I think you are going to do great long term. If you aren't already seeing a therapist you probably should. You might have an identity crisis once you aren't a Bear anymore and you have to figure out where you fit in your world after knowing your place for so long. BTW the Bears are my favorite
