    Purée Stage

I pureed many different family dinners - just whatever was being made for everyone else! I loved them because they smelled and tasted of actual food after 4 weeks on nothing but protein shakes. They're not for everyone though - mine were smooth baby food texture and lots of people just don't like that. I still used shakes to meet my protein goals for those 2 weeks, or at least get close.

    Head Hunger!!

I did super well with not paying attention to the head hunger, but in the last 3 months it's come roaring back. It's super hard to ignore sometimes. When that happens, I try to have smaller meals more often and add an extra snack. It's been a while since my surgery, and while I can't eat like I used to, I can eat larger meals now. And when the head hunger hits, I try to "fool" my brain into thinking I'm eating more when I'm actually eating the same amount but broken up into smaller portions so my brain sees me eating again and again and thinks I'm eating more. It sounds weird, but for me it actually works. And I prioritize protein (some days I hit 100g of protein) because it fills me up and keeps me full longer.

    OOTD

When I was starting out and had alot of lumps and bumps to hide I really liked the Baleaf brand on Amazon. Since I have lost a little more I have gone with the gym People brand also on Amazon that are a little cheaper and have more color options but the material is not quite as nice as the Baleaf. They both are much better fabric than the ones you get like 4 or more in a pack in my opinion and they both have the pockets for your cell phone which I can’t live without now but of course in terms of fit that will vary from person to person. The good thing about Amazon is that you can easily return if you don’t like them but the Baleaf ones unless they are just too long or short or something I don’t think you will want to return. They are real soft and I had two pair in each size as I lost Navy And Black So they were washed every two days and the color never faded and they didn’t get the pills between the thighs. . Of course it was only a couple of months but that’s still like 30 washes and they still looked new. I suggested a clothing swap at my irl bariatric support group and I saved them because I know someone will be thrilled to get them as they are losing.

    Need opinion

It is still super early on for you, but it seems like you are doing a great job; both with your protein intake and your weight loss. We all lose weight at different speeds, but it's about not adding foods in too fast to let your body heal and making sure you are getting all the protein and vitamins you need to keep your body healthy. Keep making good choices and enjoy the journey!

    Light headed and clammy

As the above have said it is a bit of a rollercoaster ride after this surgery. I also carried a drink and a protein bar everywhere I went. I would have what I called dizzy spells quite often. I had to come off my blood pressure medications really early out. I had to take extra care when getting up in the morning and find a chair back to hold while the world steadied around me.
  6. Today (January 16th) is my birthday. 🥳 This year I opted out of the birthday dinner’s I’m usually taken to by friends and family. I am 40 days post op and while I am now in the “eat whatever I can phase” ofc I’m following the low carb / high protein / no sugar diet I’m advised to follow by my bariatric nutritionist. So for my birthday this year, I didn’t want to go to a restaurant knowing I can’t eat too much food right now + I didn’t want to be tempted by restaurant foods. But I did want to know if anyone else had surgery close to their birthday like me and if so, did you allow yourself a birthday treat? Like a cupcake 🧁? I haven’t had sugar (other than my protein shakes and yogurts) since late November so idk how it will affect my stomach either but I was thinking of just getting a little birthday cupcake 🧁 for myself tomorrow. I’d love to hear others input or experience. Thanks! ☺️

    Almost time...

I had no idea gastric balloons were even done any more. Unless this is a different procedure from the days of yore? I think most surgeons abandoned balloons for the safe and considerably more effective sleeve and bypass options. I know those mightn't be an option for everyone of course. Best of luck and I hope it works for you OP. Sounds like you're in a good mind space and that's worth a lot.

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

Mine is 2 meal replacement shakes/soup/bars unlimited low carb veggies, 100-150gm protein and 1 fat serve per day, under 1000 cals. Yours looks pretty manageable, how are you coping?
  9. Thank you. I understand the reasoning for it, it just threw me off when she said it was forever. I even had to ask because I thought I misunderstood her, but nope, she confirmed they’re asking us to avoid the 4 c’s of drinking and to eat deconstructed, protein first. That makes perfect sense to follow the plan while losing and hopefully through that time, build a better relationship with food and learn to choose healthier options along the way. I appreciate the feedback and advice.
  10. When I feel that I need to snack, I drink a protein shake, that takes my hunger away. I get my movement in and do both strength training as well as cardio, now that I got clearance to do so. I track everything I put in my mouth from the water I drink to ever morsel of food. If you think you need a therapist, I would suggest spending only 40 bucks a month and join BariNation. They have groups with licensed people, including social workers, counselors, dieticians, physicians, and quite frankly there are people just like you and me and everyone in this forum, all bariatric patients and we help and support each other. You can attend any group or meet-up you wish, and there are so many ways to track your wins every day, particularly your non-scale victories. Just a nudge to check things out, you will be surprised. To see a little bit, they have YouTube videos too, for free if you want to check them out. All of the professionals in BariNation are well versed in working with Bariatric patients/clients. Community is therapy. Hope for the best!
  11. Okay so I was curious to know exactly how much more our bodies burn while we are healing so I asked Google and this is copied from AI response. Basically if we need more calories to maintain as your healing you really may be good by just cutting back a tad on the extra Carbs since your carbs were much higher due to a very high level of activity, which you’re not sustaining but honestly if I was you I would Just wait until your through this to worry about losing you could take even longer to get back on track if you try to lose now “Yes, your body burns more calories during the healing process after surgery. This is because your body's metabolism increases to help heal the incisions, fight pain, and prevent infection. Explanation Hyper-metabolic state After surgery, your body enters a hyper-metabolic state, which means your metabolism increases. This causes your body to break down muscle protein, fat tissue, and neurotransmitters to provide energy for healing. Calorie needs During the healing process, you should consume more calories than normal. A general rule of thumb is to consume 15–20 calories per pound of body weight. Protein needs In addition to calories, you also need more protein during the healing process. Protein is a key building block of the body and is necessary for tissue growth and repair. Hydration Drinking plenty of fluids, mostly water, helps deliver nutrients to the wound site. What to eat Eat a balanced diet with a wide variety of foods Eat nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, lean fish and chicken, grains, beans, and nuts Take a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement if you don't get enough nutrients” This is from HSS.com “How many calories should I be consuming since I will be inactive? Now is NOT the time for weight loss! When people are immobilized, they worry about gaining weight. However, you should NOT decrease your calorie intake because you will be inactive. In fact, your calorie needs are now greater than usual because your body requires energy from nutritious foods to fuel the healing process. You will need to consume about 15-20 calories per pound (using your current body weight). If your overall energy and protein needs are not met, body tissues such as muscles and ligaments will begin to break down. This will compromise healing and may prolong your recovery period”

    All protein is now gross

This is where it can get tough. I hated the waste of products and money as everything was Blahh. TBH there are still a few things that I can't stomach. How much longer are you on liquids only? Contact your team, If they are in office at this time of year. Tell them your struggles and see if they have alternative, if not improvise if you can't stomach the shakes a day longer. You need the nutrients. Can you drink Full Skimmed milk ? This has a surprisingly a lot of protein. To add more protein add a spoon of yogurt, dried milk powder or I flavored it with PB2 powder and banana. There is also consomme, boullion and bone broths. They don't have as many calories as protein shakes or milk but you need to get food in you. Once you get a little further along it gets easier, I promise. Others who used shakes will give you other pointers but the Fairlife brand does seem to me one they advocate, so fingers crossed for you there.

    Can't Stop Eating Too Fast!

I also couldn't eat without something to do. I think a timer is the best option. I've had one meeting with a psychologist after my surgery who told us about mindful eating and taking the time to appreciate the food and eat it slowly and really enjoy it, but purees and soft stage foods aren't much to wrote home about so I struggle with that part
  14. ^^yes!!!! Meal Prepping is really the key to success!!! It doesn't have to be a huge meal prep. I only meal prep my bfast and lunches. Then my snacks are super duper simple. Cheese and jerky, or a yogurt and berries, Even a protein shake with a cold brew. The simpler the better for me otherwise when I over complicate things I get annoyed and don't do it.

    Purée Stage

I did eat puree fruits and veggies but meat was just gross. I made sure to get my protein in from shakes and had a bit of fruit and veggies to get in some fiber.
  16. I have two shakes a day, one cup of fruit, sugar free jello or ices, and one meal with lean protein, low starch veggies. I can have more low starch veggies another time.
  17. My diet is liquids all day, 90g of protein and one meal I can have a lean cuisine with 300 cals or less. I start it in 24 hours
  18. I got down to within about 10 pounds of my goal weight a few years ago but slowly started inching back up. I have been on Wegovy for 8 months now and I've lost those 30 extra pounds and I'm staying consistent. I am one of those who were genuinely hungry ALL the time. Like not snacky hungry but really hungry. I have no idea how long I can stay on Wegovy but I'm on 1.7 right now and will increase to 2.4 if necessary. It is a total game changer for me. Im not plagued by constant hunger. I will say though, full disclosure I've felt sick to my stomach every single day while on this drug. I mean, every day! It's the price I'm willing to pay though to not constantly feel hungry and I'm likely going to weigh what I did in high school before summer is over. If you can handle feeling sick (nausea/diarrhea) then it's worth it. You have to be sure to hydrate and eat extra protein but I'm used to that anyway. I know a lot of people are scared of it but for me it's been worth it

    Car Sick

Hopefully it gets better with time but they do make ginger candies that could help with nausea. Also maybe try protein shakes and see if you can stomach them better since they don’t need to be digested as much as they can be sipped slowly over time. Maybe just pop them back in the cooler ir pour over ice.

Eating is getting tough for me

Did you go in to the clinic and did your doctor do a full physical? If not I would consider a second opinion especially being 9 weeks out. At 9 weeks you should be on solid foods unless you were advised to do liquid/puree for longer and you didn't? A second opinion can never hurt. You said mentally food makes you want to "gag"and you find food " disgusting ", perhaps not only having a complete physical but talking to the dietician or a mental health professional would also help... Also, you never stated what your average meal menus consist of...and quantity..other than low fat meats and protein drinks. Are you getting enough fiber to assist with those " accidents"? I'd at the bare minimum set up an appointment with the dietician. Good luck hope you start doing better soon!
  21. I had a very specific diet. Like a list of foods that I was allowed and I was not allowed anything not on the list. It was basically high protein low carb but it was still very specific.

    October 2024 Surgery Buddies

I wish I could do lean meat. I love chicken and fish. no sugar jello and the no sugar popsicles are actually really good. I'm just craving savory filling foods. Like cheese and pizza. All the stuff that put me in the position to have surgery in the first place. I think if I could eat the lean meats, I would be fine. My favorite meal of all time is a salad with chicken on it. But not being able to have anything, to me is just a recipe for disaster. It's turning me into an angry person. Trying to work full time, school full time, mom full time and go through a divorce. Let's just say the poor guy at Les Schwab got an ear full today. And the ex wasn't happy when I told him he wasn't my priority.
  23. I'm doing okay, lost another 10 pounds and still waiting for my surgery day to come. One more nutrition consult. Today is my birthday and went out to a restaurant for lunch with my husband. I had Lamb, it was s o good, and enjoyed them so very much, good source of protein. Otherwise I'm just hanging out, doing as many support groups as possible, and I am learning to love me for who I am. I look forward to the saggy baggy skin, and the removal thereof. Tomorrow, heading out to the pool for a couple of hours of a workout, and hopefully work off some of that lamb I had today. LOL

    August Surgery buddies

Oh my gosh I get this so much!! I get SO cold. My favorite Christmas gift is a heated blanket my Mom got me with two remotes as it is Queen sized - I set that thing on a toasty 118 degrees and will say pulling myself out of that warmth and into the days has been a real struggle! These cold temperatures are absolutely an obstacle for me to want to set foot outside and my joints are all achy. Makes me wish I gad scheduled my surgery for the Spring! I do have an exercise mat and an exercise bike but I have to work around the holiday clutter in the spare room still. Keeping up activity is a true challenge when the cold hurts my face. What warm comfort dishes have you have that are high protein? It's hard not to eyeball the calories vs protein content of things like soup and chilli these days for me.

I do the really lean beef with 2% cheese as a cheeseburger wrap on them low carb wraps and that doesn’t make me have any crazy cravings afterwards. They even sell really small ones if your portions are still tiny. Do you have any low carb wraps available to you? It tastes kinda dry to me so I spread a bit of avocado on the wrap but if you need a lower fat option you could also do like salsa or some pico de gallo with the lettuce to add some moisture. Or a yogurt dressing. I don’t know why I am just thinking of that. I would probably really like it with the yogurt ranch.
