need advice about salivating and gurgling!
PamRN replied to bullit143's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I laughed as I read about the gurgling noises, I've noticed that I too have all that going on. I sound like a soda factory with all the bubbling, and gurgling going on, even when I'm NOT eating. I only do the salivating like that when I eat too fast or my food isn't well chewed. I've not "slimed or Pb'd" yet, but I've gotten uncomfortably close too it. My signal that I'm full is a feeling of pain in my midchest. If I'm not careful to eat slow and chew well, this can happen in 2-3 bites. If I'm careful and eat slowly, I can usually take in a decent meal about a small child sized portion. Usually about 1 cup or so. My biggest hurdle is learning not to drink with my meals, I find I want something to rinse my mouth as I eat, so not drinking anything during or after hasn't worked for me yet. I do limit to only a few sips, but everything I read says not drink to at all... I'm trying to get there. -
I hit the web hard today. I ordered a bunch of protein shakes/puddings from different brands because I'm not sure which ones I'll like. I REALLY like food and variety is the spice of life. I've read on the boards about a few different brands and everyone seems to have a favorite. Soon to be arriving at my door are; Unjury(I liked that they have sample sizes), Medifast, and Focus 28. My big problem is that when I eat it is everything on my plate and maybe what is left on my husbands. A smaller problem is remembering to eat. The first will be solved with the band. The second will become a very large problem if I don't address it. I get very focused at work and skip lunch. When I get home it's --GET OUT OF MY WAY-- as I head to the frig. The nutritionist suggested I get a timer that reminds me to eat. Hmm good idea. It would also work to remind me to drink. So I hit the web again and found this really nifty watch that has a alarm setting. I thought about a kitchen timer but if I leave my office or am out and about I'm not going to take that with me. I'm looking into elliptical trainers but I don't think I will buy that on the net. tomorrow is -make some sense of the basement day. Comments are welcome and appreciated. TTFN

Here's my experience and opinion: DO NOT BUY via internet advertising. I did it for one that touted Oprah's endorsement. It's a scam. They charge your credit card lots of $$ even though it's a "free trial". Getting your $$ back takes a lot of time and frustration. Some of these same products are sold at health food and Vitamin stores. Also, I did try it for one week. Made absolutly no difference. Save yourself time and frustration!

All of a sudden I'm having cramps on right side just below ribs. No new foods or anything. Anyone else experience this type of thing? My wife wants me to go to the ER but its not that bad, just uncomfortable.

.....and I am not surprised, but it is good to see this information our there. ...if you are obese at 40, (I am 42) you can reduce your life by 7 years. Good reason to work hard on getting weight down don't you think? Tonight I am going to a doctor's speech on childhood obesity and how important good natural whole foods are for our children. I have 3 kids, all of whom are thin, but I see one is a carb addict, just like me, and one of them eats portions that if they continue - will produce an overweight teen. I am trying everything in my power to keep my kids eating healthfully and getting lots of exercise. But sometimes, it is hard to keep 'junk' food out of the house. I'm looking forward to this.

Hey, Just keep on learning about weight loss. When I was losing weight and even now when I'm maintaining my weight, I avoid "white" foods. That means bread, Pasta, sugar, rice, flour etc. You need to make sure you feed yourself really well with nutritious foods. Use smaller portion sizes and try not to eat after 7pm or so. Keep at it. Keep learning and keep trying Everyone runs into roadblocks along the way. Best wishes, Heather

Finally going home today!
leahkayy replied to leahkayy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They have to eat too. They were on the hospital with me since Monday morning without food and it didn't bother me one bit that they ate in front of me. They've supported me through this ENTIRE process. -
Biotin In A Capsule
Humming Bird replied to petiteflower70's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They do make sub-lingual biotin. It just melts under your tongue. You can get it at health food stores. -
Restriction is when your band is tight enough that you feel that the amount of food you can eat is being restricted by the band. When the band is loose, food passes through fairly quickly, when the band tightens down, it restricts that food, so it stays in the pouch much longer, thereby reducing the amount you can eat by quite a bit. It is referred to as "restriction". It enhances weight loss, because you feel very full on a very small amount of food, and you stay feeling full for a longer period of time. Welcome to LBT---and don't worry about a question sounding stupid!!! Asking questions is how you learn, and around here, we DO have a language all our own!!! I ask so many when I first got here, I am surprised they let me stay!!! LOL Feel free to ask anything, people here are really helpful, and they have soe valuable information they are always willing to share. I LOVE this site!!! Kat

I had my first surgeon visit yesterday
jessiquoi posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am very excited! Due to a myriad of health issues over the last 3 months, I've already had most of the pre-op testing required. I just have to get with my PCP to have the records sent over to the surgeon. I live in MD, and will be using Dr. Kim at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace. I am starting my three-month supervised weight loss with the team. They want me to lose 5% of my weight by surgery. I started following as many of their recommendations as I could yesterday, and by last night I was totally freaking out. My relationship with food is so strong, and so TWISTED. The thing is, I really and truly love healthy food, and always get my nutrients in via food, but a) my portion control sucks, and I also eat a lot of crap. I am going to have to do this one day at a time, making changes slowly but surely. In order to keep myself from eating all night long, I had to go to sleep at 7pm. My poor boyfriend is going to be lonely in the evenings until I can manage staying awake in the evening without eating. He's super supportive, and has himself lost over 100lbs without surgery. I can't believe I am probably going to be approved for an early October surgery. I have a feeling the time is going to fly! -
I had way more gas with my band. I was told once you are banded the band works as a one way valve which is why more gas. Plus since we have to eat so much slower and have to chew our food to mush we take in more air. Atleast I did.

Hope I'm doing this right, I've had the RNY gasteric bypass exactly 2 months ago and I have been doing nothing but vomiting. At first, up to the first 2.5 weeks after surgery, everything seemed to be going well but I started vomiting after that and haven't stopped. I will only try the smallest bite of something(soft food) and I start vomiting. It hurts and sometimes it seems like I'm actually vomiting foam. Has anyone had this or can anyone tell me maybe where to look for an answer please. My Dr. gave me fenergen but I still vomit. Is this normal?

Dr. C I don't seem to be able to tolerate fills very well. You can see from my signature line that I have had lots of fills and unfills in my short 8 months. I have learned that I can't seem to get over .3 at any one time. My doctor has us on 3 days of liquids and 3 days of mushies so I'm not rushing to eat solid food. I seem to react about 6-10 days after a fill. With the exception of 2 times, once I start PBing I can't recover from it. I will PB for days and can't keep liquids in. I then go for an unfill. I also get a fever after a fill that last just a few hours with chills. I get extremely tired and then seem to be OK. All of my fills are under fluro. Even when I can't keep my salivia down the scan shows me wide open. Are there others like me? Can I be given something that will help me tolerate fills?

What does being in the GREEN ZONE mean to YOU?
Rachel412 replied to CheckYes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not there yet but I do feel close. So this is what I'm looking for as MY green zone... Can eat 1 cup of food or less and feel satisfied for 4-5 hours Everything goes down if I chew well I'm not looking for the band to keep me from eating certain foods. That's MY job, not the band's job. The band's job is to help me feel satisfied with a small meal, and to keep me satisfied until my next meal. -
What does being in the GREEN ZONE mean to YOU?
HeatherinCA replied to CheckYes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I'm not hungry for 4-5 hours. Then I don't feel the need to snack... which helps me control what I eat. That is all the band is designed to do, control your hunger. It's not designed to stop you from eating. I wish it was . Some people just unfortunately have trouble eating certain foods. I don't think it has anything to with a sweet spot. My green zone is when I stick to my diet -
Post ops, please post your favorite meals.
jennamoose replied to Paulax's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I haven't had the surgery yet, (scheduled for next week, 4/19!:clap2: ) but noticed that a lot of responses list protien shakes as a meal replacement. What are some of the best shakes and where do you get them???? Also, it is good to see that a lot of you eat really normal foods, just not a lot!! Thanks, Jen V. -
im 2 wks out today... Dr gave me the ok to incorporate some mushies inso my diet since it technically goes from full liquids directly to solids -- I had some refried Beans for lunch .. with some enchilada sauce mixed in to loosen them up -- added some FF cheddar cheese on top, and little light sour cream. Let me tell you, it was amazing. As if i was eating a filet mignon.......... thats how long its been since I had semi real food lol Anyways, can you all please give me your input as far as if you would considered these below, to be mushies? - Deviled eggs - Scrambled eggs w/cheese - mashed potatoes - Hummus - crab dip The refried beans went down great, no issues after either! Please let me know what you all think. Thanks!!

Well my family is use to me dieting, so I figure I will play it off as another fad diet I'm on. I don't have any fill yet, so getting stuck isn't too big of concern. Now I just have to worry about all the tempting food!! -
questions about pills
cduval04 replied to cduval04's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
wow that was a big help....does the flaxseed oil really taste good? I guess if an 8 year old would take it, i could. Cuz I spent a lot of time looking around at Omega 3 gummies/softchews, and they all just sounded gross and even if I found one I liked I would probably end up trying A LOT before finding one that was tolerable and that is a lot of wasted $ I don't have lol. I ended up buying this stuff called coromega-its like a little ketchup packet that is citrus flavored, the guy an viatmin shoppe said all his customers like it and it does have a tart citrus taste but no fish taste, you can suck it out plain or add it to a smoothie etc. its has 350 of epa and 250 of dha. Although I could not try it cuz my surgery is monday and no-omega 3's allowed pre-op I had my bro and his GF try it and they didnt find it very good, but they can be overdramatic sometimes . If that doesn't work. I'm going to ask my nutritionist if omega 3 "mini" gels are ok. I don't know if you've heard of them but as far as I know 3 companies make them, one is made by a company called prothera, one is made by is NOW foods, and the other is made by puritans pride, (all easily located with a google search) and they all claim to be less than 1/2 the size of the regular fish pills, and prothera's site was the only one with a picture of the pill and not just the bottle, but I can't really tell from the pic the exact size, nor do I know which one is "actually" the smallest of the 3. Being an herbalist, have you seen any of the mini softgels? are they "mini" enough for us LB patients? Also some people on this board say they were told not to take anything bigger than a tic tac, and other posts I have read said they were told they could take standard sized capsules, so I'm a bit confused about that. I am confused as to the message are they saying "take them if you can tolerate them without gagging/throwing", or "even if you can tolerate them they are still not good for your band"? I think the other stuff wont be too too hard to find, its just I am really sensitive to gross tasting stuff and that is the last thing I was after LB surgery lol. So if the coromega and the mini softgels both don't work out, nice to know I have the flaxseed oil idea. One other question though. I have been reading up on omega 3's and found this article blip while researching Not all omega-3s are the same. The three main forms are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). EPA and DHA are considered long-chain forms of omega-3 and are found in fish, fish oil supplements, and algae extract. ALA, the short-chain form, is found in plant sources like walnuts, flax seed, canola and soybean oil, and, to a lesser degree, green leafy vegetables. The body needs to convert the short-chain version to a long-chain version in order to make use of it—but this conversion doesn't happen very rapidly, says Willett. So knowing this, are there any forms of flaxssed oil that provide EPA and DHA instead of just ALA? I've never delved into the flaxssed linseed oil business b/c I am not vegetarian, so that is new for me. thanks for the help! -

1st Really stuck Episode w/slime
Dave_NW replied to NJGirl32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Even though you don't have restriction, you still have a narrowing of the pathway food has to get through. What you experienced is classic of being stuck, based on my own experience. My first time was in a Mexican Restaurant (salsa and chips) while I was talking and laughing and eating. Next thing I know, I had knife pains in the center of my chest, and I knew it was time to hit the Men's Room. It eventually passed, but not till after I slimed like a mad dog for several minutes. I was able to go back to the table and finish my meal, but I was eating slower than a snail after that. I've since only gotten stuck to the point of sliming a few times, and each time was in public. Broccoli is the worst, for some reason. I've never gotten stuck at home. Luckily I've been able to make it to the restroom each time it's happened. But I take each bite carefully now, believe me! It doesn't take too many of those kinds of episodes to educate a bandster really quickly! If your throat is still sore, try liquids for a day or two and let things settle down. You'll be fine. Dave -
Absolutely, it is ok. I didi the Gerber Organic Stage 2 foods. I am almost 7 weeks post op and every once in a while, I still have one. They are definitely nutritious, and especially if you are going somewhere and don't want to lug containers around, this just fits in your purse.

my Nutrionist suggested the stage one baby foods I plan on doing that while at work much easier , hopefully it tastes ok lol
