Do you regret choosing the Band over Bypass?
va_viv replied to che4u's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Shannon! Like many others I never really considered the bypass because it seems toooo extreme for me. I'm also worried about loose skin and I think the bypass would definitely leave me with some. My dr told me, in his professional opinion, the band is better for younger people (I'm 25) because it gives you the AIDE you need to change your life NOW before it's to late, instead of having a "quick fix" and never have really "learned our lesson" prompting many young folks to gain the weight back (with the bypass). And he also mentioned that it helps a lot in not having loose skin because we are able to exercise better/easier. I have a friend who was banded about 3 yrs ago and now she says that she wants to go back and get the bypass (I don't know if that's even possible) she lost nothing with the band and I think it definitely has to do with her not making a life style change and now is looking for that quick fix. That being said, it is of course a personal decision/preference. My brother in law is also getting WLS and he feels like the gastric sleeve is a better fit for him. So, my advice is don't rush and give yourself enough time to make a decision that you will be satisfied with forever. Tons of luck and wish you the best. I'm getting banded Oct 6th so I'll let you know how it goes  -
I am pre-band and tonight I'm eating spicy chili and thinking....I know one of the ten commandments of banding is NO drinking with meals....so here is my question... I know that drinking during meals makes the food flow throught the stoma faster thus loosing the optimum band effect, but if you need a SIP of water in the middle of eating something spicy, would that be okay? Maybe take a sip to clear your mouth and eat something else if spicy food makes drinking during meals too much of a challenge? Any and all advice would be great!

Rollercoaster=Flipped Band
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to BigLW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, so does that mean the protection bar knocked your port loose? If so, I hope others read this thread and keep it in mind when going to amusement parks. From what I understand, if your port flipped then that means the sutures holding it in place have ripped/come loose. The only way this can be fixed is by surgery to re-attach it. Best wishes to you, -
How is the swelling post-op?
possumtrot replied to damora549's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have much swelling. Noticed it on the day after surgery the most as that day I chose to stick tight and not do much, but the day following that we were out being tourists all day and I did not really notice that my clothes fit any worse, so I'd say the swelling was going down. We did a lot of walking which probably helped somewhat...but if you have elastic waist band bottoms and a flowy, loose top, you will probably appreciate wearing them on your ride home. :cool0: Good luck! -
How to prevent saggy breasts and skin after weightloss?
sassypants replied to SleevesUp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was using cocoa butter till a friend in the know told me no no sassy that's completely wrong try orange or lemon oil and maybe mix with a almond oil. which I did as I could only find high concentrate citrus oil which isn't good for directly applying to the skin so the almond oil is the base oil you mix with the citrus. if I recall you can use a linseed oil as a base too but I like the almond combo it smells really nice. I actually got a couple of plastic sauce bottles off amazon mixed them together and that was my body oil so I didn;t have to mix in a bowl or anything every time just shake it up and pour into my hands and work all over. -

How to prevent saggy breasts and skin after weightloss?
sassypants replied to SleevesUp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
just wanted to point out coconut oil is actually not a good idea to put on your skin as that's used in a aide to aide elasticity like if your pregnant you use it to help your skin be supple and stretch easier its not a good tightener at all. try a citrus oil instead. -
How to prevent saggy breasts and skin after weightloss?
MandieClick replied to SleevesUp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You might not prevent it all without some form of surgury but you can at least keep them supple. Take a look at some of these little bits and ends. http://www.lifescript.com/diet-fitness/articles/b/boob_lift_or_bust_3_best_chest_exercises.aspx This is an interesting read! Don't forget to add collagen to your diet as well this is a very important protien for your skin. You might even be able to find it in shake or liquid forms too but this is a start. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/reserveage-organics-collagen-booster-hyaluronic-acid-60-capsules/4r-1004#.UvllbrR5Fdw Water and all the Proteins are so important for healthy skin. Also cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil for moisture is fantastic and it smells and tastes yummy too! -
Are there any Smashing Pumpkins Oct 08?
MississippiGirl replied to MississippiGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow you both have done FANTASTIC! As of today I'm down 103 lbs! I know I could have done better...but I've fought a lot of emotional eating to get these 103 lbs down! I think I'm up to 6.3 cc's in a 10 cc band. I'm suppose to go back Sept 1 to get a fill...but not sure I need one. I'm at the point where I've only been getting .3 cc's when I go...hate having to pay all that money just for that much...and I wonder how the heck can that much really make a difference but it does! I want to weigh 180...i'm at 238 this morning from 341...So I've got about 58 more lbs to goal! I already have a lot of loose skin ESPECIALLY at my belly...so I will definitely be having weight loss surgery. I just worry about the SCARRING!! How are yours healing? It is so nice to touch base with you and see that comparable that we've done fabulous! Keep it up Smashing Pumpkins!! -

cwalker replied to jenn20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
something loose and comfortable to wear home from hospital, gas x strips for the first couple of days, you can have propel,fruit20 and special k protein water, I made my own broth and froze it coz the can stuff is nasty and I did use Takeout Egg drop soup and Japenese onion soup (strained) adding the unflavored whey protein.Oh and Crystal light popsicles are a must lol I went thru 2 boxes. Good Luck! -
I went today for my first fill. I have the 14 cc band and my doc put 3 cc's in it. I lost 11 pounds since October 8th, for a grand total of 33 pounds since August 16th (that was the last time I was weighed). Even in bandster hell I managed to loose weight!! I'm definitely feeling the restriction. I'm sipping on a can of slim fast and boy does it feel tight in there. I'm having trouble burping again, which happened after the surgery. I was told when I start eating again (48 hours of liquids and then 48 hours of mushy/pureeds), that I should take a bite, chew it 15 times, swallow, put my fork or spoon down, count to 50 and then do it again. I honestly didn't even feel it when she put the needle in! She had me do somewhat of a crunch, I guess to make the port stick up.

10 more days til Surgery!!! HELP!
Tiffykins replied to sleeveorbust's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pack lightly. Depending on how long your stay is for me my essentials were: Slippers (those nonskid socks just suck in my opinion) My shampoo and body wash (i like to bathe) Lotion Lip Balm (I prefer blistex or lip gloss over chapstick) comfortable loose clothing to wear home A FRONT CLOSURE SNAP OR HOOK SPORTS BRA. . . I don't mind bebopping around my house, but in those thin hospital gowns, I didn't want to be nipping out through the gown in those cold hospital halls on all my walks. The front closure bra was a godsend. I stayed in the hospital gown because I didn't want to dirty up my clothes. IPhone, and charger Some take laptop, magazines, books, and I had to have my make up. As soon as I could, I was slapping on eyeliner and lipstick. It helps me feel better and mentally, it helps me recover to know I look better. -
I am the body shaper Queen. I have always worn a body shaper and will always wear a body shaper. I am always on the look out for a new better body shaper. Now i don't wear them on a daily basis. I wear them mostly on the weekends when i go out. I like how i feel and look in a body shaper and even more now that i have lost 55lbs. I can wear a pair of jeans and not have my fat bulge out over them. my husband always laughs at me when i am trying to get them on (it's like trying to shove a golf ball into a straw) I love the dr. Rey's deep plunge bodyshaper i buy them at sears. I can still wear a low cut top with them. I have never tryed spanx but i have heard they are nice. Like Jachut said the damage is already done the skin is already loose. Shapers are more to make you feel better. But i will tell you this when i have a shaper on i feel all nice and tight as if i didn't have this loose skin.

Pre surgery weight loss tips needed
honk replied to new@52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to speak with your doctors' office to know for sure what they want. The 12 pounds loss may be expected before any liquid diet. My experience was that I was told to loose 30 pounds before the surgery. In general my doctor did not require me to do a presurgery diet. My surgery ended up being postponed for other healther reasons but in the end I lost about 54 pounds presurgery. I can tell you what I did. First, if you are not on an exercise program start one. A mistake that over weight people often do is thinking that they have to start an intense program suddenly. If you can do 10 minutes the first couple days that's fine. Personally I swim; it burns lots of calories and your joints are'nt getting a lot of stress all of a sudden. You can even buy waterproof MP3 players which makes swimming way more fun. The first 7 months presurgery I ate a conservative diet and exercized daily. The month prior to surgery I went to 2 Protein drinks a day (made with milk, about 200 calories each); and one lean protein based meal. Remember the surgery is not the end game. Start now rethinking your eating and shopping habits. I think if I were to run into my doctor at the grocery store and was embarressed to have something in my cart then I should'nt buy it. -
Husband Suddenly NOT Supporting Surgery
daezeey replied to daezeey's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for all the support and kind words. Yesterday was a bit better as I let the anger go. Also I know in my mind and heart that I am moving forward with this no matter what other people think of it. That includes my hubby, I know he loves me no matter what and that fear is likely playing a big role in this attitude change. Sometimes I just find any advice from him hard to take as he is 5'6" and weighs a whole 130. To give you a visual on what that looks like, I buy him size small shirts and they fit a little big, pants are size 32 waist which are actually a bit big on him but he likes them a little bit loose. When we married he was a size 29 waist and I found it incredibly difficult to find him adult clothing that fit without looking way too big. To top it off his entire family consists of mostly average size and thin people. So he has never dealt with the weight stuff until he met me and my side of the family. Did I Thanks again for all the words of encouragement as I have boarded this train and refuse to get off until I reach my GOAL STATION -
Can you spot other surgery recipients?
Lila21 replied to Crabadams72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One other thing I'll point out: I lost a lot of weight "the natural way" about 8 years ago (approx. 100 lbs), and many of the issues people mention above are pretty much the same between a major weight loss and WLS. You still get loose skin, you're going to pick at your food because HELLO, you have to starve yourself to stay on most diets, and your arms will still be saggy. I think the only difference is that the volume of food is going to be less, and that may be more obvious. This part, I don't have any experience with since I am pre-op. :-) -
Peter, the band is a tool and your choice if you chose to do WLS will be up to you. AS with any WLS there are ways to cheat and not loose or even one can gain weight. You have to work it! Your behavior, eating habits, exercise habits, and how you deal with your eating issues. Definitely do some research and see which one fits into your life style and makes you comfortable. It may be the band, it might be something else. I too am a stress eater and I work at it everyday. I get up from my desk and walk when I want to reach for the candy jar because i'm stressed. By the way the candy jar is gone and I keep anything that might tempt me out of the house, car, office or where ever I am. If I am in a social situation, I walk away, grab a glass/bottle of flavored Water and congratulate myself on making such a smart move. I also have a very strong support system, both at home and at work. I am truly blessed to have a partner in my hubby and to be loved by those that I work with. I exercise everyday because if I have down time, I will make excuses as to why I cannot or don't have time to exercise. My reward is knowing that I am empowering myself and becoming my own being without the crutch of food! Take care I wish the best for you!

Question for you guys out there. Prior to being banded, I was told that the Port is more noticeable on Men than Women. I was Banded last month. Was 85lbs overweight. Had/have what is commonly called a Beer Belly. Large, but rock hard. Right now my port is right under my skin, and looks slightly smaller than 1/2 a golf ball, not to mention the scar. I can see the bump with a t-shirt on. I go to a gym/health club that has showers, steam , sauna and whirlpools in the locker room where all the men walk around naked, and I am very self conscious of this bump. I joked with my Dr. saying that it looks like I will be one of those guys that always wears a "Muscle T-shirt" while at the beach. He said don't worry, as you stomach goes down/flat, it will be less noticeable. I do crunches everyday, meaning when my belly does get flatter, it will still stick out?? What say You????
-
Mine has turned on its side, so its clearly visible. Maybe someday I will get it corrected or taken out, but for now I really don't care. All the excess skin I have is much more of a problem than the port sticking out... And no number of crunches is going to fix the skin problem.

Where is my port? Advice please...
TXSassyGal posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I was banded a little less than 2 weeks ago. I have a larger incision on my left side, and with the large knot under my skin, I was SURE this was my port, until tonight... All of a sudden, I feel a knot about 2-3 inches higher on the same side. Which one do you think is my port? Why do I have two knots? What could the other one be? I have an appointment on Tuesday, but in the meantime, I'm stressed all of a sudden! Thanks for the help! -
Hey mom, I too had that same pain!! After a dose of liquid tylenol, it was tons better!!! My Dr. sais the same thing as Porc, it is just our bodies healing. The reason it is worse on the left is because that is where they had to do the most work, inserting the band and getting the port in place. Just take it easy for a day, take your pain med and it will feel better. As far as the slowweight loss....I am also discouraged!! I keep reading about all the other bandsters who are loosing double what I have....I just hope that after my first fill I start to see the other side of 200.... Let us know how you are doing!!

at the age of 19, (which was 22 years ago), I was 328 lbs, and I got the gastric bypass surgey. I was successful at loosing 80 lbs, but then started putting back on weight and I've been stuck at 275 for years and years. I continue to have issues with reflux and it's not consistent. I'm wondering if this new surgery is a different venue for me that might work better. I'm really considering my options as I've never been at an ideal weight. diets after diets just haven't worked. anyone have advice as I ponder this decision?

Hideous loose skin?
MINI-Me replied to MrsMaddBroadway's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The first few months, my arms and thighs looked really weird. You know that odd looking wrinkly skin on a chicken? That was my thighs. I did some toning with a "thigh-master" type of machine, but in the past month, I have neglected it. But, to my surprise, the thighs are shaping up nicely. That being said, you hagve a lot of weight to lose and the stomach may not "bounce back". If it doesn't, you can wear compression garmets to help under your clothes. If you develop what's called a "flap" of skin and can document bacterial or other similiar medical issues, insurance will cover the removal as a medical procedure and not consider it cosmetic. By no means amd I saying to fake or cause an infection, but I would imagine that it would be the perfect place for bacteria to want to hide and grow. For now, focus on the weightloss ... if you need to repair the skin, you can think about that a year from now. Best of luck!
