  1. If you are concerned about your energy level call your surgeon's office. Your body is still adjusting two months out. Give yourself time. Don't worry too much about your sex drive...It comes back for most of us as you get further out from surgery. Some questions for you... Are you logging your food to know if you are hitting your calorie and protein goals? If you are instructed to take bariatric vitamins are you taking the correct amount? How much are you exercising?

    Post Surgery Protein

I only know the answer to the first half of your question because it came up in my pre op class. Your protein can be reduced based on height/weight on e you reach goal, but there will always be a minimum required amount. I'm 5'3"" and my range is 63-78, but anybody my height and shorter, the minimum will always be 63g/protein. So I will be aiming for 3 oz. lean protein 3x a day to avoid shakes.

    It's Official!

Karen - I know how hard you tried and how much you wanted the band to work for you. I also know how many problems it caused you. I am just happy to see you have a second option to help you. I am happy for you my friend, and I don't think anyone on this board that knows what you have been though the last year would put you down for anything. My heart goes out to you for just having the problems of your DH to deal with, I know that has been really hard. I'm glad to hear you DD is doing fine with the band! You are a sweetie girl, and you'll always be welcome as far as I am concerned! Hugs!

    vitamins?

I take the Viactiv vitamins and calcium chews and I really like them (as vitamins go). I get to get a little chocolate fix and its good for me too. Can't ask for much more than that. Viactiv products come in multiple flavors too, so if you don't like one, try another before you write them off. If you belong to a support group that meets regularly, you can have a taste testing with your vitamins, protein shakes and favorite recipes so you can try it before you buy it.
  5. Dymatize Cookies & Cream whey protein. I mix it with 1% milk and pour it over ice. It is actually very good because I'm a nose plugger too so I know how you feel.

    Away Of My Doctor

no bud, i wish i could answer your questions properly - but all doctors have different responses - thus bringing me to the answer to my question about help from your dr. in Mexico. how's that for a no answer, answer? lol Ok - i'll try and help alittle. At 5 weeks where you are i was told to drink Protein shakes. Protein throughout this whole journey is of the utmost importance. I was lucky and didn't mind the taste of the shakes. Many people can't drink the shake because of the smell, taste or whatever -like i said i had no problem. The other thing to do is drink plenty of Water, water, and some more water. At the early stages post op you might not be successful at drinking that much water, drink very slowly, remember your stomach just had major surgery. but at some point you are officially supposed to drink 64 oz. You don't want to get dehydrated- so please drink enough water, you can also have sugar free popsicles, they are good too., and broth. At this early stage, drinking plenty of water is even more important than protein. I never had heartburn, but the dr. sent me home w./Prilosec which i continue to take. I've been told that al lot of walking will help the gas decrease and stop. I will be honest and say i was never a person to excercise, but i know many many on the board do walk even for simple excercise. But others after a certain amount of time/per there dr. are allowed to gradually get back into excercise. i'm definitely not sure of next - most have a mushy phase where they put food in a blender. i didn't have to do that per my NUT (nutritionalist) (msp)/doctor. Next is soft foods like cottage cheese, yougurt- others i can't think of. Next is the regular food that you start out with 1 oz., then after a couple of weeks, 2 oz. now 3 oz. - thats it for me now per my NUT, but all dr.s are different, remember. You get one of those small medicine measuring cups and the food volume is supposed to fit in one cup etc. i'm going on and on and others reading this might have said get to the point alreadyLOLOL - or they have just fallen asleep. Other people will jump on the bandwagon with more thorough info ask questiosn on the board anything you are not sure of/remember we're here to help but we're not doctors lolol best wishes kathy WLS 12/15/11

    Preop Diet

As long as I got enough protein, I find protein drinks are good. When I was doing my pseudo liquid diet (two shakes, one protein bar, two Greek yogurts a day) I was getting over 80g of protein daily. I was not super hungry.

    Pre-workout Supplement

What kind of supplement are you looking for? My dietitian and exercise physiologist said no pre-workout food or supplement is necessary unless you are doing a serious weights workout, in which case you should have something with 5-10 grams or so of carbs prior to your workout in order to fuel your muscles. I usually have a piece of dried fruit in those instances. Then after a weights workout, something with protein and carbs, like a protein shake made with honey vanilla almond milk, or a regular (low carb) protein shake with another piece of dried fruit.

    Pre-workout Supplement

I don't do supplements, but I do make sure to have Protein at least 30 minutes before working out and immediately after. I also try to have the bulk of my carbs then as well. However I only do complex carbs. My typical workout routine is a protein shake with 1 scoop of Protein powder, ¼ - ½ cup of Fage 0% greek yogurt and whatever mixins I feel like. Sometimes that a tablespoon of almond butter, sometimes a ¼ cup of fruit like pineapples, strawberries or peaches, or a ½ and orange. Depending on my mood I may add some flax powder for added Fiber, or a handful of raw spinach or ¼ cup if frozen. I add enough Water to mix and toss the whole thing in the nutrabullet. Often I end up drinking half before I workout and the other half post workout. My morning workout is and hour of aquafit and 30 minutes run/walking in the pool. This also counts as my Breakfast. After this I drink water until it's time for lunch. I get in 30 - 38 gms of protein this way.

    Sweet

I've found that if I have a sweet craving I just have one chocolate button and let it melt on my tongue, this is the best tasting button ever and stops my craving. I could maybe try a highlight or options hot chocolate as I'm still on the liquid diet, only two wks post op. I have found that the button works perfectly and one button is very small amount of calories. :-)

    Yeah pureed food finally!

That was my first real meal too. Yummmo. And to think people eat nasty baby food. Gross. There are so many other options out there.
  14. I had my lapband surgery March 6th and I am doing wonderful! I have quite a bit of pain on my left side but nothing I can't manage. I am eating my 3 meals, drinking my protein shakes and taking my supplements all without nausea! So far I do not feel hungry and I keep moving which helps the soreness. I am so thankful everything went okay and I am looking forward to my journey! Just wanted to update everybody, thanks for all of your support!!!

    I feel good!

That is awesome! I hope I'll be able to say the same when I have my surgery next week. Besides getting in all your water and protein (good job!) :thumbup1: any advice to help make post-op a smoother ride?
  16. Band/Sleeve - Esophageal Cancer In support to my decision to have mine removed, I had no damage prior to my surgery and since then I’m a stage away from Barrettes esophagus. I just don’t want to be that girl to develop esophageal cancer as a result of being naive pretending the band did not bring me there. I know the band was causing the damage despite originally being told that was not the case, as the doctor states in the slide and his video it’s practically common sense when you think about it. I just hope it isn’t too late for me and I hope other people are made aware of this information so they too can rethink the risks. As it is, everyone who had the surgery is at high risk for developing esophageal cancer.. I believe that is what further studies will show… we are the guinea pigs and further research will reveal the truth but at such a high price. http://www.slideshar...ophageal-cancer http://www.youtube.c...h?v=4sBRDaH2gJA http://www.bariatric...phageal-cancer/ I have an appointment to meet with GI specialist again once my band is removed, hopefully there hasn’t been much progression since my last visit with him More patients should know this and be made aware of this prior to having the surgery done. As I said, I would guess eventually these surgeries will no longer be an option. I'm not saying everyone will get cancer but they should know what's going on... I have a family, kids and my conditioned started after my surgery and quickly worsened. I did not think to look into esophageal cancer prior to getting the surgery done... who the hell would've thought to do that?? However surgeons all over the world are reporting on the statistics and they are not good. I just want to try to warn everyone, awareness can save lives. Some people don't even feel symptoms, everyone who had the band and sleeve surgeries should have an upper GI done. Esophageal cancer is usually detected by the time it's too late but if caught early enough something can be done. Barrett’s esophagus leads to cancer and GERD can lead to Barrettes esophagus. It's basically acid causing damage which just continues to get worse... and both surgeries are causing the conditions to develop and worsen even while being treated for it... i don't know what to do, I wish I could reach out to every single person and make sure they know all the information... it could cost someone their life.. no one wants cancer Please share this information with as many as you can, they should know all the facts prior to making their decision!

  18. Hey everyone! Today starts my pureed stage and I started with some egg salad. It went down fine but I'm not sure what feels full at this point so I took some baby spoons in and closed up shop till I see how it goes. I did notice I hiccuped and have read that could be a soft sign that I'm done. Will full feel the same as it used to or should I just heed the hiccup warning lol? I'm supposed to do 1 1/2 oz of Protein and 1 oz of fruit of vegetable for my first meal but I don't want to push it....any advice? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App

    no milk products

Oh I just realized that you just had the surgery. I was out of luck the first week of my surgery because the protein drinks were nasty and made me want to puke. I didn't get good protein until 2 weeks post op. Good Luck to you, this is a hard time but it will pass and you will have plenty of time to make up for all the protein that you missed.

    no milk products

I use whey protein in Van., orange (crystal lite type) mix, ice , water & litlle milk if you can. Blens and it's like an orange slush with what you need.

    To much artifical food?

Thanks for your ideas, I think I do need to back off the whey protein just a bit have the shake or the bar and then go with real food the rest of the day.
  23. stomlin75

    To much artifical food?

If it is working, then why change it? However, our bodies do flourish with variety, especially with veggies and fruits. These are foods that provide our body with protective nutrients we need. Also, maybe venture out with some shrimp, scallops, beans, eggs? Getting your protein from food is ideal (vs. protein shakes/bars) once you can eat anything. I assume you are past the restrictive phase. I make my own "protein shake" with baby spinach, plain nonfat greek yogurt, 1/2 cup frozen cherries, 1/4 cup guava juice and sugar free torani syrup. Simply divine - a bit more carbs yes but full of many good things for the body and the protein!

    Energy?!

My energy started to return after about 2 months post op. Adding calories and more real foods is what helped a ton. When I was just eating 400 calories max and relying so heavily on Protein drinks, I was really tired. I am only 3 months post op and workout intensely at least 4 times a week. My energy is through the roof!
  25. I had VSG surgery on February 5. It has been 9 weeks, and I have lost 20 lbs. It seems so slow. I know, I shouldn't compare. I know, I should be patient. I know, I should stay off the scale. BUT... Does anyone else who was a slow loser at first have a success story to share? I can't shake the feeling that I will be the ONE person that doesn't lose significant weight. Just a little reassurance will help set my mind at ease (Yes, most days I meet my Water and Protein goals. No issues with eating or drinking what I am supposed to, and I avoid carbs/sugar/etc. Thanks Kristin
