    Lap Band Removal

I just had mine removed on Mon due to many complications. It was originally placed in 2007. I was able to get it removed within 1 month of my decision to do so. Insurance tried to fight it was not medically necessary but I had plenty of documentation to show it was!!! My surgeon will not revise to another procedure for at least 3 months, longer if there was a lot of internal damage and/or erosion.
  2. @@jamiep5 I understand your concern. Your story is very similar to mine. I just had my sleeve (done in 2010) revised to the bypass and I was 190lbs. I was terrified of dumping, rapid weight loss, and severe vitamin deficiency. I just had my bypass on 5/16/14 and I am doing well as far as food tolerance. I don't know if it's my sleeve helped with that. I am scared to hinder weight loss because I've already done the whole food progression before and I know what hurts and what doesn't. Lmk how yours is going!
  3. This my beginning to LB revision to ByPass. I will be having surgery on May 7th too, I hope. I had an abnormal EKG and this may postpone my surgery date. Has anyone had an abnormal EKG and if so did you get clearance fast. I will see the Cardiologist tomorrow and I am praying for good new both ways.
  4. It is normal to have second thoughts. I think we all did. Just go over all of the pros and cons again in your head. Or write them down on paper! You have to know yourself. Are you willing to work to lose the weight? You will have to measure your food, chew thoroughly, eat slower and make good food choices. Exercise is important, as is doctor follow-up care. Read through all of the threads here because some people have revised their band to RNY. It is a life-changing decision, so make sure to make the best choice for YOU.
  5. I would also want more info before agreeing to go ahead with the revision.
  6. Wow, I just found this thread and I'm surprised at all the sleevers that have had problems with bile reflux and esophageal spasms. I've been posting since 10 months post op about these horrid pains and spasms. I was post op 2 years on May 21. At the time of posting, I couldn't find anyone that was having them. I've been putting off getting bypass for several reasons. Number 1 being my husband has terminal liver cancer and was given 6 months in January at the age of 48. So my days are filled with taking care of him and that is how I want it to be. Losing the love of my life is the hardest thing I've ever faced and seeing the physical deterioration is traumatizing. Since he was diagnosed I've gained 20 pounds back. I lost 128 and was 168 and now am 188. I'm so scared I will gain back it all. Recently I've been taking Dexilant for the reflux and levsin for the spasms which definitely helps. I'm just so scared to have the bypass and go through another surgery. Especially, since it will be without my husband because he isn't going to make it. I was self pay for the sleeve because my insurance excluded weight loss surgery. I will have another policy on July 1st but it too excludes weight loss surgery but I was wondering if anyone was approved for bypass because of acid and bile reflux, spasms and gastritis? I would love to hear from all of you that revised and honestly are you glad you did this? I know the spasms are so painful that revising would be welcomed but I'm still scared. Reason is you can get ulcers years and years out and not know you have them because you don't feel the acid anymore. I know of two people that passed away with ulcers. Not mentioning any names because one was family of a friend and the other I just heard about. Hope all is well with everyone that revised. I don't know when I can even think about this. My surgeon has been trying to get me to do this for a year. I'm so sad and heartbroken. Just exhausted. My husband was in the hospital all week last week and now has a picc line which Home Health is going to be helping me with. Hospice isn't an option with me because they want to take away his fluids and meds and dope him up until he dies. Not happening. Only God will say when it is time for him.

    What Led To Revision

I had a lap band for 7 years and I had it removed almost a year ago due to GERD. I'm revising to RNY in the near future.

    What Led To Revision

Another failed lap band here! I am getting revision to RNY tomorrow morning. I am so excited to get this awful thing out of my body. It did NOTHING to curb my hunger or appetite. All it did was make eating healthy food hard, and make eating slider food rewarding. Couldn't get a chicken breast and a cup of broccoli down because it would get stuck in the band but I could eat a greasy cheeseburger and a milkshake with zero issues. I wish the lap band procedure would be banned all together. It's useless at best, and potentially fatal if it's left alone to cause issues.

    ACID REFLUX/HEART BURN

Please DO NOT stop taking reflux meds without speaking to your doctor. The damage that can be done in stopping FAR OUTWEIGHS any potential (and the link is definitely not proven yet) harm. I’m the person who had been a life-long GERD sufferer. My surgeon did an endoscopy and luckily I didn’t have damage so I was sleeved almost 8 months ago. I still take a PPI a couple times weekly because if I stop altogether my reflux hits. Take them every day for the first 6 months, then discuss the next step with your surgical team. For me, the risk of still having the GERD was worth the sleeve vs bypass because I really didn’t want to have to deal with all of the malabsorption issues. That being said, everyone has to choose their type of surgery based off of many factors and each kind has its pros and cons. There just might be a day when my body decides it doesn’t need to produce an insane amount of acid anymore, but there could just as easily be a day when the PPIs don’t work anymore and I have to be revised. Either way I’m willing to roll with it and do what needs to be done to maintain as healthy status for myself as I possibly can
  10. I had surgery December 21st. Everything went really well, had little to no pain, and have recovered nicely : ) Back at work and the gym after two weeks, and now I'm about 3.5 weeks post op. I lost 17 pounds pre surgery and 13 pounds the first week while on the Clear Liquids phase. However, I've stopped losing weight, and have even gained 1.5 lbs. since I started introducing solids. I'm doing everything right: measuring food, chewing slowly, not drinking with meals, Protein first, stopping when I'm full. I should note, I had Lap Band done in 2007, but had band to bypass revision 12/21/15. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a post-op appt this Monday, but I'm looking for some answers! Stats: height - 5'10 HW - 269 Surgery Weight: 252 CW: 241
  11. my surgeon told me that after my revision, as I was at goal weight with a slipped band everything is great now except that I loved the restriction feeling as I don't have that anymore, I'm only 8 weeks out and I'm looking forward to restriction in future possibly January I've been told.

Band to Sleeve patients lose less?

I had my band to sleeve revision on 8/28/14. I have only lost 22 lbs and have been stalled for the past 6 weeks. I am extremely frustrated. I consume 90-100 grams of protein, 60-80 carbs, and 1200-1300 calories. I have been walking 1-2 miles, several times a week. I am starting to feel like a failure, or that I am not doing something right. Original SW before band was 275. Lost down to 190. I was 220 when I had the revision done. My goal is 150. It is starting to feel like I have gone through this surgery for nothing.
  13. Completely anecdotal but I've had both surgeries. I had the band in 2008 and got revised to rny in june 2013. Both surgeries had the same recovery tine for me and the stages for food were virtually the same. The only difference for me is I was hungry post band (that shocked me and was hard emotionally). Whereas with rny I didn't have any hunger and literally had to put my eating on a schedule. The pros and cons are well documented. Consult with your doctor. My philosophy is if I trust this person enough to open me up I sure better trust their judgment too. My story isn't a bash against the band or a rah rah for rny, it is simply my story. My last bit of advice is to enjoy the process. Recovery physically goes fast and is over in a blink. It is the mental stuff that's harder... I still struggle with my new body but am told that will get better with time. Good luck!
  14. I've had the band since 27 Feb 2003. I've done alright with it - went from 133 kg to about 47 kg and then back up to current 70 kg. Throughout this time, I've had 3 or 4 hospital admissions due to total blockage of the band, even with relatively small amounts of saline in the band. The last admission was in Sept 05. Then they realised that there was slight slippage. I've not had a fill since then and have steadily put on a fair bit of weight. Barium Study done in May 2005 shown grouse dilation of the proximal pouch as well as further slippage of the band. Am scheduled for revision surgery at the end of the month. Anybody had that? Can tell me more? By the way, I'm from Singapore. A tiny island out in South East Asia.

What Side Is Your Port On?

Mine is on my right side. I was banded 12/22/11, and when I went in for my first fill at the beginning of Feb, my port had flipped. So the doctor had to go back in and revise it. Now it is much closer to the surface and I can easily feel it, whereas before, I could not feel it at all.
  16. A few more things to keep in mind. The density of the food absolutely matters. Your body size matters. I thought restriction with my sleeve would be consistent - but it's not really. So things like day, time of day, etc. really matter. I've pretty much given up dinner. It's just not comfortable for me to eat at night and I don't want to risk the reflux by pushing it (that's part of why I'm still not up to a realiable 600 cals/day even at 5 months out). Size of your stomach matters. They remove the fundus/greater curvature, but some stomachs are longer than others. Volume-wise - probably under 1/4C for me most of the time. There have been a few exceptions. I also do not count my intake as "what I can eat in 20 minutes". I count it as "however long it takes, until I'm satisfied or think I just need to stop." It can matter if you're a revision, too. And the location of your scar tissue.

    Band Removal Approved; BYPASS DENIED!

Yeah Bobbe! Great to hear! The revision has been the best thing and so much easier then the band itself.

    Ready to Go

Had appointment with Surgery Center and final appointment with Doctor this am. Revision surgery is at 7 am Tuesday and I was told it would last about 45 minutes to an hour. I am more excited than nervous.
  19. Hey everyone! I know there are a lot of posts on here but I'm new to this site and I'm still a little lost! I currently have a band, have for approx 3 years, the first year I lost 60 pounds, I've gained all but about 15-20 back. I have had no success for approx 2 years now and it sucks! I'm miserable. I recently got new insurance and it covers wls! I have an appointment on Thursday to talk to my doctor who did my original wls to see what options I have. I've done a lot of research and I'm thinking sleeve would be good as I'm sick of failing with this band! Can anyone who has had both please give some feedback/suggestions!? Did you fail with the band and succeed with sleeve? How much have you lost and in how long? How long were you in the hospital? Recovery? Etc!.... Thanks for everyone's time, I look forward to hearing from you!!
  20. I'd also tell him about the hernia for sure. I went back to my surgeon 7 years after my sleeve with severe hiatal hernia symptoms. He did an EGD, and as soon as I woke up told me he saw the hernia and had scheduled my revision surgery for the following week. Hernia and GERD are two very good reasons to revise to bypass as it should help with both. As others have said though, don't expect as much weight loss with the revision as with the original surgery. One other thought, I had great luck using my sleeve with a combination of time restricted feeding and keto. I only ate between noon and 6pm (lunch at noon, dinner by 6pm, no snacking) and generally followed keto guidelines. This is the insulin control diet regimen recommended by Dr. Jason Fung. I dropped 20 pounds in a couple months and found it was easy as since my sleeve I didn't have a great deal of hunger.

    Should I switch to RNY?

I'm going to back @GreenTealael on this one, if you've got even the slightest GERD now... the sleeve will more than likely make it worse. Side note that people seem to get wrong (not that you stated this either way, just some information that most folks don't have correct) is that the sleeve is non-reversible under ANY circumstances, You can be revised from Sleeve to RNY, but you cannot be reversed from the sleeve. The bypass... is reversible, it is risky, and it doesn't happen too often, but it DOES happen. Something to think about. Sleeve, 90% of your stomach ends up in the medical waste bin... Bypass, everything is still in there, the stomach is split but just the connections have been adjusted, nothing is actually removed.

    Should I switch to RNY?

@Screwballski that dinner sounds delicious btw lol... i'm just so torn as i know sleeve is irreversible i'm just wondering what the percentage of sleeve revising to RNY v RNY to sleeve revision percentages are? and i do worry about GERD but also know a lot of people have had the hernia repair while under and been fine ;/ just kind of a catch 22 im hoping it will help mine either way i go
  25. I was banded 10/04/11 and between then and August '12 lost about 40lbs. In November I had redness and pain in my port area and my surgeon put me on an antibiotic and the pain and redness resolved. Then about 3 different times between November and August, I would have pain in the port area that would go away the next day after applying heat. Finally, though, in August the pain would not resolve and taking extra strength tylenol did not touch the pain. My surgeon started me on pain medication and his office went to work trying to have a port revision covered through my insurance. I paid cash for my original surgery. After a month, I was finally scheduled for an EGD and possible port revision, but when the doctor did the EGD he learned that the band had eroded into my stomach around the buckle area. This was on a Tuesday and by Thursday I had the band removed and spent 5 days in the hospital. I am not going to sugar coat it, it was awful. I've had surgeries before but this was the most difficult. In fact, it's now 5 weeks later and I'm still dealing with a lot of pain. The surgeon said that this was a very difficult surgery that would require a long recovery. He also said that if I wanted to in about 6 months I could revise to the sleeve. I am extremely down about the whole ordeal. I am so tired of being obese. I have tried every diet/program out there and have not been successful to become thin and healthy. That is why I took such drastic measures in getting the lapband, I need help outside of myself. So, I don't know what to do now. The lapband surgery was difficult, the removal was even more difficult and to consider another surgery scares me. Thanks for "listening"...I just don't know what to do. =(
