Today is the day!

Surgrey was great it's almost 2 weeks and I feel great. I do notice there is a pain in my lower back Hoping it will go aWay. Best dishion ever. I notice I'm getting full and when I be I stop eating in the middle of the day. With everything with Protein drinks, pudding yogurts he gets to be a little too much for my stomach. I know that I lost 17 pounds so far. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App -
Well I made it through and it went much better than I expected I flew to Toronto on Wed. then went to the clinic on Thurs. at 7:30 am. They asked me a few generic questions then took me to the back room to get my gown, hoodie to cover hair, and socks on. Then they took my blood pressure, tested the oxygen in my blood and I spoke with the surgeon and the anestegiologist. Then about an hour and a half later I hopped up onto the surgery table and they inserted the IV. My last thoughts were "they're not going to put ME to sleep!" and I was out like a light. Then when I woke up my first words were "wow was a sound sleep, I think I had dreams and everything". I was lucky to come around pretty quick and was up and walking about all day, for about 20 minutes at a time. I only had four incisions and didn't have to take any of the narcotic drugs they give you. The most useful items have been: the liquid tylenol to get through a few achy moments, and LOTS and LOTS of gas x. The strips are fantastic and in a yummy cinnamin flavor :banghead: I have no shoulder gas, just the digestive gas and hope this will subside by next weekend when I start the mushies. My flight home went well and I had to get up during the flight to keep the gas moving. The hotel and airline I went with, were very nice an accomodating throughout the entire time! I got home last night and dropped by my apartment to get my kitty and am now staying with a friend for two weeks (very nice home on the waterfront). So far I'm just a little bit achy and have MEGA gas, overall doing very well. I have long nights and am looking forward to getting a decent night sleep, I'm up 2-3 times and walk around for half an hour to keep the gas moving and relieve the pressure so I can sleep again. I am not hungry a all and am desperately trying to get something into my day. The first three days I only had water and on the second/third I had some soup (maybe 1/2 cup). Today, now that I'm back in a home with a kitchen I had 1/2 a package of Optifast for breakfast, 1/4 cup applejuice for lunch and plan on having a yogurt drink for supper. It's very difficult to get this all down ONTOP of all the water, but am doing my best  I had a popsycle last night and it tasted friggn awesome!! Well I better go for another walk, then another nap - boy do the days seem so loooong when I'm not stuffing my face with food :hurray: Good luck to the rest of you that are getting banded this month!

I am not sure why you exclude Protein shakes - I know a lot of people hate them but you just have to look until you find something you like. I like GNC, and while they are more expensive, they are usually in some mall and the best thing is, that they let you return the product. I have tried it several times, I buy Protein powder, and try it. If I don't like it, I return it. I never have more than one serving, no need to abuse their awesome policy. I have found that I really like the GNC Wheybolic Extreme chocolate and I think it is as close as possible to chocolate milk. It has no after taste IMHO and it packs a lot of great protein (isolates, no concentrate). It also mixes very well so it is good to use without an electric blender. Anyway, my nutritionist says a lot of sleeves continue to rely on protein supplements for ease of mind and I see this. I have a chocolate shake in the morning - 30g of protein and 140 calories, and it usually isn't too hard to get 30g in naturally. You can go all out and get the whole serving for 60g of protein and 280 calories and then never have to think about protein the whole day but often I don't want to sacrifice 280 calories on just a shake. It's not cheap, make sure you get a coupon or wait for the same (usually beginning of the month) Other than this obvious, here are some other things I like: Hummus with yogurt (greek/regular plain) - this makes for a nice hearty protein snack, add a little olive oil, curry powder or hot sauce on top for an extra kick but not necessary Fage 2% yogurt - make sure to use the 2%, because the calories are about the same (maybe 10 cals more when comparing by weight) but it tastes a LOT better than the 0% versions of Fage, Oikos, Dannon and the like. If you can spare the calories and carbs, add a little maple syrup or agave nectar I am still on full liquid, so I have to wait for tuna, chicken and eggs :-(
-
As others have said tuna has become a big part of my diet. It's quick and easy to prepare and packed with protein. Once I was onto soft foods and allowed to eat tuna was when I was finally able to meet my protein goal for the day. I mix it with Greek yogurt instead of mayo (there is no low/no fat mayo in Taiwan that I can find LOL).
-
I like the pure protein bars, The EAS Advantage Carb Control protein drinks only have 100 calories and 17 grams of protein and taste great. Light and lively Greek yogurt is really good too and turkey or beef jerky. I find all of these to be a good snack for protein.

I had the sleeve done 4 years ago. Lost 115 pounds. Gained about 20 pounds over the last year. I ended up with severe GERD, hiatal hernia and gallstones that cause severe pain. 9/6 I had the surgeries to fix all that which includes the bypass. It's been an interesting month. The healing process is different. Food going down too fast will definitely be coming back up (vomiting). Anything not chewed will be coming back up. Premier protein is smooth enough to stay down. Soups like French onion, chicken noodle (minute the noodles) veggie soup. Salmon. 2 good Yogurt and high protein high fiber oatmeal. Stays down for me. It's a big adjustment. I know that this is just a phase that we go through. I can eat boiled eggs now too. Eat slowly-chew slowly-swallow slowly. Drink 60 ounces of water. Follow the doctors orders. You'll loose weight I've seen people successfully keep the weight off with both. They stick to the high protein/low carb and don't eat anything they did before ( that made them obese....like breads, maccoroni, rice, flour, sugar, fried foods). How are you all managing constipation? That's been interesting. Take care and give yourselves room to adjust. Things will get better. We make the best of the tool ( bypass) and it will work for us. Everything will workout for the greater good. We deserve healthy and happy lives and we embrace them daily.

I am only 2 weeks out and since I can't return to work yet friends are always trying to take me out. i keep a Protein shake on me and plenty of Water. I've also carried yogurt and crystal light with me and keep some in the car so i always have something. For you I would say to just choose from the low cal menu since most restaurants have one or choose anything with fish and greens, any other healthy decisions...Good Luck! -
What Healthy Foods To Eat?

I think you make a fair point, white meat chicken has never been a problem for me, but I know it can be for some people. You might try another solid dense Protein, but cottage cheese or yogurt are probably not good indicators. I'm not saying that it should be easy, I'm suggesting that it may help you describe what how much solid food you are easily able to eat in order for you and your doctor to have a dialogue. Does this make sense? -
6+ Months Postop - How Many Ounces Firm Protein Each Meal?
Diana_in_Philly replied to erniesmom863's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Trust your tummy, but, especially if you are exercising heavily, try to get some more protein in - even if its throwing in a shake. Last night I was at my fencing club for 2 hours and burned about 1,000 calories. I had consumed about 600 calories before going during the course of the day and ate a protein bar as I drove home to boost things. Today I will concentrate more on protein as well. Had a nice shake for breakfast and will have some yogurt pretty soon! -
Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Too Fast?
KevinL posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Is there such a thing as too much too fast? I Started my pre op diet on Oct 12, 2012, my begin wieght was 337, yesterday was my 4 week post op mark, and I wieghed myself this morning and I am down to 278, if i am not mistaken thats 59lbs. Granted I was down to 309 the day of the surgery on Oct 22, 2012. but altogether it seems like its a lot of lbs to loose in a short amount of time. I beleave I will slow down as soon as I can start to eat better, but as it is now I am not holding down much, I can do a protien shake, it takes about an hour to get down, I can eat some soft foods like yogurt and apple sauce but only about three very small bites at a time, then i am done for hours. I had my surgery done out of the US, for a couple reasons, first of all the bariatric surgen would not even talk to me because I take narcartics for pain, plus the local surgen wants 25K to 30K so I went out of the country (Mexico), The doctors and nurses were exeplery they were so nice and accomidating to our every need it seemed like, but the only problem is there is no follow up care which i would have thought that if you follow the diet like it says there should not be any problems, but to my surprise there are unforseen things that one just does not think about, like I think the doctor might have made my stomach pouch too small be cause it is really hard to keep anything down, but maybe this is the way its suppose to be, time will tell. -

I get the Isopure at the Vitamin Shoppe (but you should be able to get it at any nutrition store, i.e. GNC). ISOPURE I get it by the case at the Vitamin Shoppe. I get the EAS premade shakes at costco again, a case at a time. The yogurt does have a little bit of a different taste at first, just mix it good and now I like it better than any other yogurt I have ever eaten (and I ate a yogurt every day even before surgery). I started walking about 1.5 weeks after surgery (1.65 miles on my lunch half hour). I think I pushed too hard though and gave myself shin splints. So I have taken a week off, but I have really learned to like it. Gives me a break during the day and I get that extra exercise. Once the doc tells me I can I am going to switch to the elliptical machine. I have one in my house. Because of the arm motion they didnt want me doing it too early for fear it would hurt my surgery recovery. I will do that 3 days a week and still walk at lunch. I can really feel it this week that I have not walked. Let me know what you think of the websites. -

Omg thank you everyone! I know its all about change and that I am the ONLY one who can change. I know it takes time and I have to change my eating habits, I do know that Protein is a huge deal!!! My goal is to lose at least 90lbs all together! Im trying to get my friends and family on Facebook to do a New Years challenge with me, I figure if I work hard I can lose an easy 30lbs... Karen- Thank you for your help! I agree with ya about thinking how am I going to be skinny in such a short amount of time lol What is this book about? Ill check it out and let ya know!!! Im hopefully going to start swimming on Oct 1st, thats when we get paid. But I do know that exercising is a major part of weight lose! I know when to stop eating at times, just not all the time! I do my Wii which weighs me everyday/or when I do it lol I do know that I tried on a pair of my old jeans and I fit them!!! That was exciting:) Tross- Ya, I know I was debating on the 2 surgeries. I figured I didnt want them cutting me into pieces, and that I just wanted the extra push for help cuz I know I can lose weight if I have help. Thats why I choose the band, if the band doesnt work for me in the future I know if Im desperate I can always get the bypass. Ali- Thank you for telling me what ya eat daily. Ive been trying to figure out how one gets in all their protein and not alot of calories! On most days I tend to have a Slim-Fast for breakfast, Yoplait yogurt for lunch, then a nice dinner on a SMALL plate with much smaller portions then I used to, for snack ill share a 100 calorie package of Cookies with my daughter or another yogurt. But like I said I know Im not getting enough protein! I think Im going to steal your meal plan lol I always wondered about those Calcium chews, do they really taste good??? What is this isopure you are talking about??? Elfie- The 13lbs is really from before my surgery to my follow up appointment with my doc on Sept 7th. No I do not wanna get anything stuck nor do I wanna throw up. I do though wanna feel what everyone calls "restriction" lol I cant eat without at least baby sips when eating, I know I know...its bad  I do though eat slow and take small bites lol -

I was banded on 8/25 and I initially lost like 10 lbs and then seemed to level off. I got very upset and my husband put it in perspective for me. The inital 10 lbs was pretty much Water weight and I was on liquids only. Then on the 3rd week I went to softer foods (higher intake of cals, etc) so I hit plateau. Then I started walking 1.5 miles a day and stayed at like a 20lbs for the next 3 weeks. What you can see is the changes in my body. Although I may not be losing as fast as I want, I am changing rapidly, adding lean muscle which weighs more than fat and losing the cellulite. I have gone down two dress sizes. Now I am starting to lose 2 lbs per week and feeling a little more satisfied with the struggle. I have been very strict with my diet though. I only eat what is high in Protein and low fat/cals and sugar. I drink plenty of water and am now pretty committed to an exercise regiment. I dont even try to eat things I am not supposed to. I dont think it is worth it. The whole point of doing this surgery is to change your behavior as well as have the tool of the band to help with hunger and restrict your eating too much. For Breakfast I have two eggs or Greek yogurt, a sm cup of coffee about 30-45 min later, then Isopure juice which I sip on all day long. lunch I will have greek yogurt or left over protein (fish/chicken) 4/0z or less. then about 30-45 min later an EAS choc shake (takes me about 15-20 min to drink, then back to the isopure and water sipping all day long, then dinner is protein only 4 oz fish/chicken, etc. I use my Calcuim chews choc from Viactive as my deserrt because they really taste like little peices of fudge. My reward. I do not allow myself a cheat. I have my first adjustment next week and things are going to get more restricted and I dont want to be surprised. I wish you luck and dont be discouraged. I think what you and I went through is natural. We expected big numbers and they weren't, but now it is coming off more steadily. Give yourself and your body a chance to adjust and I would really start to concentrate on your diet and cal v. burn ratio. I really like Greek yogurt with Stevia and I buy frozen blueberries. I put them in the microwave for a few seconds and they get all juicy. Mix it all together and it's like a dessert for me. It's very yummy. some people put sf jelly in there too. There are a lot of things you can do to make Greek yogurt very good. And they do make already flavored ones, but they have more carbs. Tiffy is right though. the sf cheesecake pudding makes it taste very good! There is a good chance your tastes will change after surgery. Many people say things they never liked before, they really like now.

It's been a week since I've posted on my blog, I feel bad for that, I've found it's a great source of stress relief from me and really should do it everyday. My friend John who retired (at the age of 42) last year from being an air traffic controller came in for a visit on Monday. It was an unexpected visit and I had to work which was a bummer. I did take off Tuesday with him and we went to the gym together. That was fun. He's addicted to my rockband game! We had a blast just jammin. My friend Dalena moved in last Friday with her ten year old son. It's been a lot better than I thought it would be. Mikey her son is going to have some serious food issues if she doesn't change his eating habits I can already see that. He doesn't want to eat what is on the table and then goes to the cabinet that is now loaded (ugh ugh ugh) with JUNK food and gets whatever he wants. Dalena has never once read a food label doesn't know the difference between fat, carbs and protein and no clue what a serving size is. I'm working on teaching her. I think that I will take her to the nut with me on Thursday when I go for my first fill. I am SOOOOOOO ready for my first fill. It's so hard sticking to just what I am supposed to be eating. I've been cooking a lot more since Dalena has been here which is rough for me. I'm going to back off on that. It's better not to have the temptation of tasting while I cook. I'm getting burnt out on cottage cheese and yogurt. I do great during the day when I am at work and want to eat the house at night. Dang scale must be broken it's not moving:cursing: I am exercising at least an hour of cardio every day and have noticed a difference in the size of my clothing. I was SHOCKED:w00t: last night when I bought a pair of inspiration workout pants from old navy in a size medium and they FIT!!!:thumbup::cursing: Doing the happy dance! Today my cardio will be spent in the garden, my Weed, oh I mean flower beds have been overtaken and i must find them. With that I'm going to sign off and get to work. Hope everyone one is doing well with their band, I hope mine starts working soon, it's been a slacker!

All I want to do is cheat on my diet
90’schild replied to 90’schild's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can eat the yogurt, cheese, applesauce, & mashed potatoes. I haven’t really ventured out with trying different foods yet. I made a mango sorbet yesterday with just chopped frozen mangos & a little splash of almond milk. I ate the entire thing, probably like 6oz. I’m getting tired of yogurt so I have to think of other things to make. I’m also vegetarian so I definitely have to think of foods to eat. -
All I want to do is cheat on my diet
California Guy replied to 90’schild's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your getting close to the end of the puree diet. Right now, check if these are OK: soft scrambled eggs, non-fat yogurt, banana, applesauce, string cheese, low-fat ricotta cheese, peanut butter, mashed potatoes. You'll be able to eat soft foods soon such as meatballs and chili. These can be prepared with turkey. I am on the soft food diet now. I'll admit I had a couple of small slices of homemade from scratch pizza. Crust was prepared with whole wheat flour. It was a special occasion (Father's Day) but I don't plan to have pizza more than once every three months. We're making fish, chicken noodle soup, beef barley soup, and stir fry beef and broccoli. This is a good time to reevaluate meal planning for your weight loss journey. -

Week Two down...Thick Liquids are a welcome change!

You go girl! I went out to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant last night. Had Beans with salsa...no cheese dip...wanted some but the kids had eaten it all when my beans got there! lol I ate them slowly and they went down easily. I did get full on about 1/2 cup, maybe a bit more. Didn't drink after I started eating. I really miss my Margaritas so I took a tiny taste of my daughter's. It seemed very strong and I didn't even want anymore. Funny, huh? When I do have a drink, I can tell that I'll need to be very careful. Funny how your tastebuds change when you are on liquids only. My favorite thing this week on Thick liquids is my yogurt. Carb Master from Kroger is very tasty and not too sweet. It has 8 g of Protein alone and I have been adding 1.5 scoops ( 20 g of prot) of Bariatric Advantage Unflavored Protein powder to the cup of yogurt. The unflavored powder is perfect fo me. It is light tasting...although it is a bit sweet and vanilla flavored (don't know why they call it Unflavored...not so much!) But I like it! So far, that is my favorite! Just received my shipment of unjury unflavored...will let you know how it goes! Glad to hear that you are doing well! I will be going in to weigh and for Support Group on Tuesday, the 24th. Looking forward to official weigh in! Take care and keep up the good work! I am so proud of us! WE ROCK! Barb -

Good Morning Friends! Today is the beginning of week three and I was happy to have my first cup of yogurt today. I can honestly say that I don't mind the not chewing as much as I mind all the sickly sweet foods. I know you all said that your taste buds changed, but the Carbmaster Yogurt this morning almost gagged me and it was always my yogurt of choice! I weighed this morning in honor of my sleeve-a-versary and was down 2 more pounds...that makes 11 since surgery...stupid me was almost sad because it wasn't more and then I realized that I would have given anything for a 2 lb loss a few months ago! I guess it is all relative! I am going to measure today...assuming this little seamstress can find a tape measure! I think measurements will come in handy when I hit the stalls! Hope you all have a wonderful day! Cheers~ Barb -

Woodys replied to kero's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded at TLBC June 8th 2006 and have already reached goal. The best advice I can offer is follow instructions.....Lapbandtalk can offer simple suggestions through experience, however.....when it comes to advice about fills, staying on liquid or other diets, etc...then talk to your Dr....they know best. I have never had an issue with TLBC...they treated me well and professional at all times, I had no complication pre or post surgery. My husband is a chef. I do not like cottage cheese so for the pre-op diet my husband was mixing 1/2 cup low fat yogurt with 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese, 1/2 cup of ice cubes, 1 package of sweetner and liquified it through the blender...every day he would add different flavourings...such as 1 - 2 tablespoons of sugar free jam, or 1 tablespoon of plain cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon of real vanilla, etc. It was like drinking liquid cheesecake! Don't say you can't take the pre-op for 14 days....it will be tough but think of your priorities.....1) not following instructions and compromising your surgery....or 2) weight loss from your surgery which will bring you better quality of a longer life that would otherwise be compromised from your obestiy. I took the second choice and am now enjoying life as I never knew it....I also wear a size 8.....from a 24/26. Good luck Carol -

Hi Kero! I soo wrote the same sort of post you wrote just like 1.5 months ago. I was banded on June 7/07. I am having a rough time with the post op stuff..just waiting for thr 1st fill. All you have to think when doing the pre op diet..."I have to do this....I dont have a choice...I can only eat what they said....I dont want to screw this up" Thats what I said all the time. Gosh I was getting to the point I was scared the fruit in my yogurt was to big. It all worked out. For me the pre op was pretty easy. Actually I am having a hard time with food right now and back to over eating that I put myself back on the pre op until my 1st fill! -
Unjury Protein
mylighthouse replied to creatingthenewme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello I use the unflavored unjury Protein powder in cream of celery and cream of chicken soup, as well as tomato basil soup and I can't even tell that it's been added to the Soups. I also add the Unjury to non fat refried Beans and yogurt, and can't detect the flavor of the Protein Powder at all in those things. I tried Unjury in my lemonade flavored Crystal Light and I did notice it changed the flavor, and I didn't like it. Maybe if I had added less protein powder it would have been tolerable. You'll just have to play with it and see if you can try it in the Crystal Light and other drinks, such as Powerade Zero and decaf iced tea.
