Here is a link to an article on reactive hypoglycemia post–gastric bypass. https://www.ridgeviewmedical.org/services/bariatric-weight-loss/enewsletter-articles/reactive-hypoglycemia-postgastric-bypass The three most important things after surgery are fluids, Vitamins and Protein. Since you said that "when I drink Protein I throw instantly", have you tried MILK. 32 ounces of 1% milk fortified with 1 cup of powdered milk will give you 56 grams of protein. You cannot drink this all at once but spreading this out throughout the day will help you meet your daily protein requirement.

Has Anyone Ever Not Lost Weight?
BizTraveller replied to girlnamedNikki's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Let me qualify this a bit. My wife had bypass 10 years ago. She lost 60 percent of her goal and gained 30 percent back. You can screw this up. However, if she had not had the surgery she would probably gained another 100 lbs since then. So I figure it still saved her life. Everybody who gets the surgery starts with the assumption that they would not gain any more weight if they did not. That is just about universally wrong. So are you guaranteed to hit your goal? No. You will still have to work at it. Will the surgery dramatically reduce what would otherwise weigh the rest of your life? Absolutely. Sent from my iPad using VST -
I'm about 13 months out and I've lost between 50 and 55 lbs. I'm on the "slower" end of what they say should be average (1 to 2 lbs per week), but I'm lighter, and I wouldn't have been without the band, and I wouldn't have had the bypass done, so I'd say things are working, even if I do wish they were faster. Sounds like you are doing fine to me

I read through the whole article and found the research on the band to be kinda vague compared to the sleeve and bypass. Seems like they are making assumptions due to lack of specific research on the band. From my limited experience... I can say my cravings and tastes have definitely changed with the band. I am still able to eat meats and raw vegetables with a 5cc fill. I find myself wanting healthy food as opposed to junk. I have more energy than before. Perhaps I am an exception with this experience? I've read studies where the weight loss with the band matches the sleeve and bypass patients long term...meaning it takes band patients a little longer to lose, but in the end we all end up at similar goals. A lot of these studies only look a year out. I honestly think it is an individual preference...one surgery might be better than another depending on the person. Hoping more long term studies are done to help people with their decisions on all forms of surgery. I found it all confusing and contradictory when I was researching my options. Bands have been redesigned, techniques on all the surgeries have improved. So I went with my gut...no pun intended...and so far, I feel I made the right decision. I also think the surgeon, and support system afterwards make a big difference, as well a person's attitude going in. It's surprising they can't analyze more human subjects and have to resort to rats...I mean, how many people have had surgery in the past 10 years? I'd be willing to answer questions about my diet, carvings, etc...give blood samples, or what ever else, if it would help them understand how to best tackle obesity. I kinda feel we are all guinea pigs right now, anyway.

Band to Bypass Revision Next Week and Very Nervous!
dawnybaby replied to DMoon's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi I had my band removed in October due to severe GERD, just had the bypass on 11-10-14....they waited 6 weeks before doing my bypass for my stomach to heal. When they 1st took the band out, it felt great to eat whatever I wanted, at least temporarily, until bypass. No vomiting or reflux, now that I'm about 10 day after, it's definitely takes me back to 2011 when I 1st got my band and the stages. But I'm 15 lbs down so far and I think patients like you & I have the benefit of hindsight. We have been through the journey already so I don't think we will make the same mistakes twice! So good luck with everything !! -
6 days post - looking for advice

Raptly reading this all, I won't be a sleeve but many of these things could be me in the future. Your biggest forest scar is where they pulled your stomach remnant out, I would not be exempt because in. bypass the same place is where surgeon puts his bigger gauge instruments.,I guess you'd have to have an endoscopic sleeve to avoid, this, but I guess they have their own cast of problems. No free rides in Bariatrics, are there?😓 -
I detest cottage cheese. Always have. Probably always will. Also.....I didn't trust myself during the puree stage.....didn't like the idea of returning to foods that I'd already learned to abstain from since pre-op......didn't want to have to start and stop 'em again. As a result.....I bypassed the puree stage by simply staying on the Protein shakes for 4 weeks and then advancing to soft Proteins. It's all about implementing the strategy that will work best for you. You hit on something, too....with the spicy foods. I avoided them for the first three months....then slowly tested the waters. All was well. Now I enjoy hot sauces and jalapeños quite often. The key to the whole diet is realizing that it's broken down in phases that coincide with the stages of weight loss we are targeting. As long as I keep this in mind things went well and I never felt like I was having to give stuff up....simply delay it for a while as the weight is coming off and I'm learning more about what I can enjoy later on within reason.

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of the pre-op items to get approved as well. My last appt is my 3rd month nutritional appt on October 25th so I'm hoping for a November surgery date as well! Time is already going by SO slow, but I also have a lot of behavior modifications to make and need to use this time wisely. Lets keep each other motivated:) -
Lap-Band Surgery Date / Starting Weight / Current&goal Weight
The Icy One replied to Coach0407's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded on November 21st. I started the process in June at 371. Hovered in the 370's (reaching a high of 378) until I started my pre op diet, lost nine and was 369 on the morning of my surgery. I don't know what I weigh right now. I am concentrating on healing, not the scale. I will say, I feel smaller... We'll see when I get weighed at my post op follow up. -

Band to Bypass Revision Success for Super Obese?
Daenerys Targaryen posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I currently weigh 405 lbs. I was banded in 2008 and lost 90 lbs the first year, but anytime I would get a fill my reflux would land me in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia due to reflux in my sleep. So I have been unfilled since 2009 after I decided I was done being hospitalized from band fills. All the weight came back and I am back to where I started at 405. I am currently working towards a revision to gastric bypass. I have so much to lose. I see all kinds of stories of people losing over 200 lbs with the bypass, but I have yet to run across a story of someone losing that much that was a revision from lapband. I have googled and googled but can't find a story of anyone losing several hundred as a revision. So please, if you or anyone you know has been a lapband revision that lost 200+ lbs, I would greatly appreciate the encouragement. I just need to hear that it can be done. -
Thanks for the replies. I’m scheduled for my second EGD in three months to check on my Esophagitis. Earliest I could be approved for WLS would be October/November so trying to learn everything I can. Knowing it would disappear is reassuring. I have a call into my surgeons office but have not received an answer yet.

I had my surgery 8/7 and the biggest incision is still leaking. For those of you who had gastric bypass, how long did your incision ooze? My stitches were removed from it on 8/16. It's grossing me out

Finally got a date for surgery - November 15th
scottiff posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I finally met with the surgeon after getting all of my preop stuff done and got a date for surgery. It's only a little over a week away. I have to go to preop meeting on Wednesday to get all info on what I need to do before and after surgery. But he gave me a packet and I'm only on clear liquid for 24 hours after surgery. Then for 3 weeks it is liquid and mushy foods as tolerated. 3 oz of Protein at each meal 3 times a day and a Protein Shake. He wants 90g of protein a day. I'm going to take a month off of work so that I can get used to everything I need to do. Also looking forward to being home for the birth of my 1st grandchild who is due on 11/21/11. Also, he said I am only in the hospital for 24 hours and no drain. No preop diet as of yet anyways, just asked to not gain any weight before surgery. I am nervous and really excited to finally have a chance at not just losing weight but keeping it off. Any advise or tips for my upcoming journey are appreciated. Can it be? Ok so here is my story... 6 months ago i thought about having the gastric sleeve, i walk in to the doctors office for the first time just to ask if the surgery is right for me, my doctor said i should get it and i was very happy but the doctor surprised me and asked if i can have the surgery next day because someone had cancelled due to family issues. So i did it, started thinking about sleeve on the 5th of november 2012 went to the doctor on the 6th of november 2012 at 5 pm and had surgery scheduled for the next morning at 7 am the 7th of nov. Now, six months and 78 pounds later (5 pounds to goal) i started thinking about tummy tuck last week after i tried on a bikini. My tummy is not too bad but its not flat and never will be. I went to the doctor's office two days ago and he agreed on the tummy tuck and said he will call me for and tell me when i can have it done. He called me this morning and asked me if i can have it this coming thursday because someone has cancelled... Well i couldn't believe it at first, i am scared but i heard myself telling him yes!! I still cant believe that in two days i will have my tummy tucked and ill be almost at goal. I consider myself very lucky to not to have to wait for too long... I just cant wait till thursday is here and over with. IN case i didn't make it out for some reason, I want to thank all of you for your support and wish you the best in luck and i hope you get as perfect as you have always envisioned yourself! You are all beautiful/handsome and i admire your dedication to doing what is best for you. And here is my happy dance!!

Switching surgeons after today's visit... Very discouraged
Threetimesacharm replied to luvhermitcrabs's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon commented that the sleeve surgery now is like the boob jobs in the '80's!! Everyone seems to be getting the sleeve but for many of us gastric bypass is the way to go! -
Looking for reccomendations of surgeons and or programs in NJ
IVANinNJ replied to michkor's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am also a very, very happy Ballantyne person. Dr Capella only does the bypass. He feels the lap-band is not effective and will not do it. I would suggest you go to one of his seminars. He does a great seminar and is very convincing. -
I've had no problem. My daughter bought me a book called Eating well after Weight Loss Surgery. It was written by a chef that also happened to have LapBand. The recipes are yummy. She has recommendations for each recipe as to when you can start it and guidelines about how much to purée and so forth. I made a turkey burger in which after grilling I cut in half and then puréed with a Greek yogurt sauce. The next day took the other half and puréed with BBQ sauce! It was very satisfying! Most recipes are broken down into LapBand, bypass and sleeve then broken down to week 1, 2, 3, 4...

I had LASIK done in November 2001 when I was 46. I love it and wish I had it done sooner. The next year, both of my twins, who were 22 at the time, had it done, and my husband, who is my age. None of us have had any complications at all. My husband and I had our eyes corrected for monovision, which means one eye is corrected for far vision and the other for near vision. I couldn't adjust (though I was told that 95% of people do adjust -- they do this with contacts, too) so they corrected the second eye for far vision, free of charge, about three months after my initial surgery. I'm 52 now and still don't have to wear reading glasses even though I was in bifocals before the surgery. My husband has to wear reading glasses now and then because he had them correct his near vision to about three feet away since he plays trumpet in several bands and wanted to be able to see the music on the stand. He doesn't want to hold a book three feet away when he reads, though, so that's why he needs the reading glasses. I understand that there is now an operation to correct for both near and far-sightedness. My son is a Marine and he said he will be able to get LASIK done in a few months paid for by his medical benefits. It must be pretty mainstream if the military will pay for it! Our fourth child never needed glasses -- can't figure that one out!

well, people have died from tonsillectomies and wisdom tooth extraction, but then...how many people are we talking about? Your chances of dying are higher than THAT, but the mortality rate is 0.3% of dying from gastric bypass, and lower for the sleeve (I can't remember the rate for the sleeve, other than it's lower). So you have at least a 99.7% chance of NOT dying, which I'd say are excellent odds. I think a lot of people - esp oldsters like me - remember the old intestinal bypasses and other weight-reducing surgeries they did 30+ years ago, and yes, those WERE risky. But the surgeries they do now are very different - and they're really no more risky than having your gall bladder out. They're safer than hip replacement surgeries, which are done every day. just do your research. I was very surprised when I did - my perceptions of weight loss surgery were proven wrong, and I'm so glad I had it done.

Hi all - I am two weeks out from surgery. I felt great after surgery for a couple of days until I developed a hernia from pushing my 70 pound lab off my lap! Regardless, I have absolutely no sense of fullness. Not even any of the "subtle" ones. I have experimented with some mushy foods (chicken, carrots) and those didn't make me feel full despite eating half a cup of them. Also nothing I've eaten makes me sick - although I haven't had too wide a variety. I am super scared I will have to rely solely on my "willpower" to continue losing weight after the first few weeks. I have lost all the Fluid weight I gained in both surgeries (bypass and hernia) and 10 more. If I don't have any full sensation and no dumping syndrome, I'm not sure this will end up working very well for me. Has anyone else had this? Did it resolve? I am very worried about this! How are you doing for pain now? I hope you're recovering ok and getting some relief from the pain. Is bypass still an option you're considering?

As an ER nurse you could not pay me any amount of money to have a gastric bypass. I see ALL the mistakes and I refuse to live with a colostomy bag. There are very few issues with the sleeve. I may take me longer but I am 40 years old. It took me more than a year to gain this weight.
