39 Months Post-Op...First Big, Fat, Nosedive off the Wagon, Binge...also Possible just Flunked out of Law School
KeepCalm replied to AvaFern's topic in Food and Nutrition
Everyone else has said pretty much what I would in some context or another... so I'm just gonna offer a hug and hope that your week goes better. I know how you feel about the F - I'm rather upset with myself too atm - I missed the first test and assignment because I wasn't able to purchase my book and teacher doesn't have make ups. I made A's and Bs on my other three assignments and Bs on the last three tests... and have walked away with a 68 because of the missed test and assignment hoping I can fix it, somehow... -
Why is weight loss a one size fits all scenario here? Different goals call for different approach

Why do you even care about the opinions of strangers on the internet. Grow up. Also there are a ton of anorexic and people with other eating disorders with low ish BMIs cloaking themselves on these forums. Some people see through that BS. -
So, I've read posts where people said they had sex at a couple days post op. One post I read said they did it while patient was still in the hospital. I have a very healthy (or maybe even so high it's unhealthy) sexual appetite. I could go at it all day most every day. Today is day 4 post op, and while the idea of certain favors does greatly appeal to me in my head, my body would disagree. And I have had a pretty good recovery. Nearly no pain at all. Zero pain meds since the day after surgery. But intercourse??? No way! Now, I could give him pleasure, but that's about it. So, I'm calling bs. I'd say "Pics or it didn't happen," but I don't think that's allowed. Lol Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

@@FrankiesGirl I am SO hoping it was a mistake! The problem is though that in law school all of your grades are done with a special anonymous number. You can't ask any of your professors about your grades until they have all posted because it risks the anonymity of your stupid special number. You can also get an F automatically if you put your name on the test (which I am 99% sure I didn't do, but who knows), if you fill out the stupid bubble part wrong on the multiple choice part, and for a few other random dumb things, which I think you can dispute. I haven't had less than a B on anything, and I had As and Bs on midterms- I just can't understand how I did so badly as to be at the bottom 5% of the class which is the only time you get an F in Contracts- which was a class I thought I knew fairly well. So...I have to wait until the end of the week when all of the other scores post until I can find out what happened, and then it will be Christmas, so hopefully after the holiday, this time next week I will actually be able to talk to the professor. Of course nothing else has posted yet today, given I have been obsessively checking it, so I get to spend god knows how much of the next week finding out if I only suck at one class, or if I blew any others too. At least though I know it was nothing personal. Between the anonymous grading and the fact that this professor didn't even know I was in his class (I asked him about next semester during another final and he was shocked I was his student, lol), I'm trying to convince myself I'm just a random number and somewhere something got messed up. Unlikely, but one can pray. @@Nymea Don't be too impressed with my walking, lol. I took half a xanax to quell my hysterical sobbing long enough to finish working after I saw the grade and I didn't want to risk driving. The gas station isn't too far from my house, and I figured the cold air might make me feel better. Mostly it just made me cold, but at least I burned off maybe a bite or two of the ice cream, haha. -

How's everyone doing?!

Replying to #1 Post on 12/14/2016 - "Every who has had surgery already, how are you feeling?! How was your experience? And to everyone waiting for their surgeries, are you excited?! Hows pre op going? I'm assuming most have started by now and if not are you dreading starting like I was?! haha, i have 2 more sleeps till my surgery and I'm so ready for it to be over with!!!!" I am doing good, other than not sleeping much (cat napping all weekend - not one ounce of REM sleep since Thursday night) but I am sure that is expected with the excitement of anticipation of my surgery tomorrow. I have already lost 11 ;bs with this clear liquid diet that I have been on for 3 days (pre op), I'm already feeling like a better me - working towards the best me! I haven't packed my bag yet, but I have everything I need, just need to put it in the bag for the hospital. I am single, and was concerned about coming home from surgery alone, so I will also be packing a back to take with me when I leave the hospital because I will be staying at my daughter's home until I feel comfortable bringing my new tummy home. I essentially have purchased everything I need, the Protein isolate, (I am not doing the whey, I am doing the P Protein Isolate powder because of being lactose intolerant. I bought the Biotin tabs for hair loss prevention & support, the Vitamins, the protein waters, gas tabs, chapstick, and other items. I picked up my prescriptions from the pharmacy already, and waiting to head to the hospital in the morning. i plan to do my BEFORE photos tonight & my final pre surgery weigh in, and if I can figure out how to save info on this website, I will update my profile. I plan on taking it easy today, and just continuing to drink drink drink these Clear Liquids up until bedtime tonight. . I am super excited, I am the "glass have full" kind of lady, and I always look for the positives, in life, and not put emphasis or focus on the negatives. I look for the lessons to be learned from them, and how I can turn them into positives, you know LEMONS into LEMONADE. I am sure we all have had or will have some concerns about this life altering decision we have made, and procedure we have had or are about to have, and I hope that we won't let the negative thoughts rob us of the positive impact this will have in & on our lives. We all want and need something better, or we wouldn't have made the choice to do this. I hope we can continue to glean from each others post all of the wisdom shared by those who have already had their procedures, knowledge that we have, and real life testimonies about our day to day successes. I know there may be some pain and discomfort (that is true with any surgery), I know that this new tummy & new lifestyle will require some getting used to, but I a more than confident that WE CAN DO THIS!!! so let's take the bull by the horns and ride on to victory!!! (and NO I have not been drinking - alcohol, LOL) just super excited for all of us!!!! have a great day! Happy Weight Losing Everyone!!! -

@@jvleeuw You can't get an F in law school. In regular college, I wouldn't be too worried about it, but in law school, if you are beneath a certain GPA, you are dismissed. Also, because I am full scholarship at a school that is $40K a year, if that F drops my GPA low enough, not only do I get academically dismissed, but I also lose the entire scholarship. Unfortunately, it's a full-time scholarship, so I don't have the option to go part-time, without paying full tuition. A single F in law school, especially your first year, has the potential to literally screw you into eternity. At a 4th tier school, which is where I am, if you are not in the top 10-20%, which that F will prevent me from being, you are almost automatically barred from most jobs in big firms. I don't really want to work for a big firm, and I'm less concerned about the overall GPA problem than I am about the issue that first, if I have to repeat that class and it isn't available next semester, by default I'm dropped to part-time, which then eliminates my scholarship, and second, if I score badly on the other exams, the scholarship is gone AND I get academically dismissed. Hopefully, @@cheneisew is right and they don't dismiss the first semester, but our handbook which I have now read all over again, seems to indicate that I could very likely be kicked out effective sometime within the next week. Also, as a fun little kicker, once you are academically dismissed from any law school it almost entirely eliminates your chance to ever attend law school again. So, while I can appreciate the advice to chill out and not sweat it, I'm not that kind of person...I have always done well academically and it is the one thing that I have always believed myself to be...smart. I got an F in undergrad in statistics, and that was almost 12 years ago, and I had to justify it on my graduate and law school applications ever since. An F in law school may not be the end of the world, but it has the potential to entirely end any chance at ever becoming a lawyer. @@LipstickLady Yes, I tried really, really hard to let the "find a man" part go. I'm going to take it to mean relax, get laid, drink some wine, get a good night's rest, and you'll feel less crappy in the morning, as opposed to far more offensive ways to take it, lol. @@woo woo and @@LipstickLady Also, I do think you both make valid points about accommodations. Periodically today everytime I have had a mini little meltdown whilst thinking about my epic f-up, school comes back to haunt me. Blaming others for my issue isn't generally my style, and it's a very extrinsic locus of control characteristic, which I really try to not engage in. I feel like if I can at least objectively recognize that I'm doing that, it is somewhat less awful of me. I think my biggest issue is that I don't believe that the accommodations for everyone are valid. For example, I have one kid in my class, SUPER nice dude, works really hard, and is dyslexic. He gets time and a half to take the exams, he's had his diagnosis since he was a kid, and he works his butt off to keep up with everyone because he can't read as fast. To me, that is more than fair. I am mostly frustrated that several people, one of which I referenced in my first post, who have never, ever had any diagnosis until after midterms when they realized with a diagnosis they could have 4.5 hours to take a 3 hour test, now have this benefit. Several people then went to a psychiatrist and magically ended up with ADHD just in time to take finals. I am careful about my comments on ADHD because I recognize that this is a very valid condition, but when your entire adult life it never occurs to you that it might be a problem, and then 2 weeks before finals you suddenly have a diagnosis that gets you accommodations, I think you are full of crap and you worked the system. That then makes it even harder for people with valid diagnoses to be respected because everyone knows that multiple people don't have the condition, but they took advantage of the rule to get an advantage over the rest of us. When you have a valid disability, I am fine with leveling the playing field, I just think that when you get a brand new convenient diagnosis, after you fail all of your midterms (which this person did), just in time for special accommodations for finals, I call bs on that. Do you think I'm wrong? I would never say anything negative about the one guy I know who has had his accommodations in place for years...the dude is dyslexic, that's only fair, but when never before have you had a problem, and suddenly you realize you get extra time on very, very hard exams if you come up with a condition you should have had diagnosed well before now, I really feel like this is working the system and frankly, cheating. That is where my statement came from yesterday, although I was too busy crying into my icecream sandwich to clarify it as well as I should have. I know that my F is not the end of the world, it just feels like it. Best case I have to repeat that class and I think I can find a way to do that without being dropped to part-time, but worst case I get kicked out of law school. I would be so ashamed. I worked so hard to get there, and I worked so hard to do well, which I had been doing great until this grade, that now I feel just so much like a failure. I can handle failing at some things (like sports...I like sports and I play a lot of them, but man I'm kind of a clutz in some of them), but a big part of my identity is my belief that my brain can get me through anything, and now the one thing I have consistently been confident in may be why I fail at what has literally been my goal in life since 4th grade. Apologies for my whining...fingers crossed my last three grades are high enough to save me. Thanks again everyone for your kind thoughts. -

I have anxiety and bipolar 2. I wasn't cleared right away bc my psychiatrist didn't have a history of working with bariatric patients. However he wrote a letter to them and I was cleared. The previous person's reply was possibly true that the weight could be a huge percent of the depression. I've lost almost 80 since my surgery in july and have cut back on meds. Both my kids are high functioning ASD - I know what you mean! We mostly avoid artificial/processed food, but the pre-op diet was tough. I'd already picked up a few Sucralose products during the insurance mandated diet, but went full chemical sugar free for the last few weeks of super low carb. Man, it was *nasty*. But I've seen the pictures from my surgery and my liver looked FABULOUS, so I'm pretending it helped my liver shrink and am moving on. Like elisa5150, I did use sugar free stuff the first month or so - especially the sugar free popsicles - but also Gelatin, Protein powder, and some protein hot chocolate. Now, I use flavored stevia drops for kefir or yogurt (yay live cultures!) and a little xylitol (a sugar alcohol) in my tea. Some of Protein shakes (Orgain) have stevia and erythritol (another sugar alcohol) or monkfruit and inulin (Jamie Eason Lean Body for Her). Personally, I do really well with xylitol and okay with erythritol (though their "naturalness" is highly debatable). And while current research increasingly makes it look like sucralose and other traditional artificial sweeteners are really messing with gut health, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that stevia, monkfruit, xylitol, or erythritol have much effect one way or the other. There are natural(-ish) protein powders out there - as long as you can keep the carbs and protein where they're supposed to be. (My NUT recommended youbars - they make custom Protein Bars with options for natural sweeteners.) We love grass fed butter and cheese, though I'm sticking with olive oil and coconut oil for now. I do have a tub of natural coconut oil based vegan butter spread I use every once in a while, but I wouldn't give up grass fed dairy for margarine if I had a choice. Mostly, though, my new stomach prefers savory moderate to low fat food, so I try to work with that as much as I can. When I was still eating dairy, I discovered I could mix herbs (Penzey's Fox Point seasoning) into low fat Greek yogurt and use it as a dip. Still got my protein, but didn't have to sweeten it. Which is probably for the best. I don't think living on artificially sweet or fatty things is necessarily better than living on real sweet or fatty things. So, good fats when we eat them - grass fed beef; pastured eggs; olive & coconut oil - and all in reasonable amount. If a dish is too fatty, I can't eat enough to meet my protein goal. Sort of a self limiting problem, so I don't see the need to drag margarine into it. As for sweets... research just keeps making it look like artificial sweeteners wreck your gut and make you crave more sweets. Which kind of makes sense since some "bad" gut bacteria has been tied to increased sugar consumption/desire for sugar. And sweets have gotten me into a lot of trouble in general, so I feel like this is the time to develop better habits. Thank heavens I did full on high fat/low carb Keto before surgery - I rarely had sweet things anyway and it still kicked my butt! But it really did kick the sugar cravings and I am so glad I didn't have to deal with that post surgery! It's made it way easier to explore healthy options that don't involve so many chemicals. Now to try and get back on my gut health protocol and try and get my kids onboard. Wow - sorry this is so meandering - it's the middle of the night and we have a small herd of cousins over for the first Christmas break sleepover. Brain. Fried. Let me know if you need product ideas - I feel like I've researched them all . Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Hey all! I was sleeved August 24 and have lost 48 pounds thus far.. I am a creature of habit and usually eat the same things everyday to get my Protein in.. however, I'm getting a little blah with the same old stuff.. what is a typical day of meals like for you? Any fast high protein meals you can recommend me making? Maybe it's a mental block but I can NOT get down Greek yogurt which is such a bummer bc it has so much protein in it. Scared going in to surgery I read a lot about this. That's the spot most leaks happen. Even with over stitching, it's bc of the tightness and pressure in that area. And it's not really wait and see. I am sure your doc will monitor it very well, but the alternative is more invasive. I've read most leaks heal themselves. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Ooops, sent a PM to a wrong person. @@Daja You just got a PM from me, thinking it was you in the first post Please, don't be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes, us "older" ones get fed up with the bad treatment many of us get, and the whole kinder-garden style wars, fights, judgements, name calling etc. I nearly walked out yesterday, after a Newbie called me a "Bully" As I can only speak for myself though, I am happy to help/support a mature person, who is willing to follow their surgeons'/bariatric teams instructions. Otherwise, I ignore the trouble makers, as Life is Too Short! And of course, I am not perfect, I made mistakes, but they were not life threatening, and lot further down post op.

It is soooo much cheaper to be a foodie post surgery. You no longer need a pound of organic grass fed beef, 1/4 of a pound can make two meals for me. Restaurant meals = three meals. Do the math. I figured my surgery paid for itself after a year based on the savings in dining out.

Just a warning, diet drinks of any kind, may not have any calories but the artificial sweeteners do make your brain crave for other things!! I know from firsthand experience!! Regained 8 pounds and constantly hungry until I realized that the only diet change I had made was adding Chrystal Light to my Water. I stopped doing that and the hunger went away!

The carbs and sugary food are what is making you hungry. It also doesn't engage your restriction, so you can eat a lot of them. No one like to hear this, but you have to stop eating them, all of them, immediately. Take three days and eat nothing but lean, unprocessed meat (no sausage, bacon, deli meat, salami, jerky), eggs, green veggies, and healthy fats (olive oil and grass-fed butter. Eat as much as you want, whenever you want, but eat only those things. This will help you kick the cravings for carbs and sugar. You also won't ever feel true hunger as you get to eat as much as you want, whenever you want. So, you will learn to distinguish true hunger from head hunger/cravings. Also, even eating as much as you want, you won't gain weight and will likely lose. After those three days, keep eating that way for two days but get (or revive) a myfitnesspal.com account and start tracking your intake. After those next two days, add in modest amounts of dairy, fruit, nuts, and beans/legumes. Set a calorie goal for yourself -- I would think you will lose weight at 1500 calories -- and stick to it. Avoid grains, starchy veggies (potatoes, peas, corn, sweet potatoes, lima beans), sweets, liquid calories, and alcohol. Stick to your calorie goal. You absolutely can do this, I promise. 25 lbs may seem like a lot but it really isn't that much to take back off. I have done it before and I know you can too. Good luck!
