Pre-op diet vs post-op diet
ShrinkingPeach replied to roseluv3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, I can think of food but I know that I wouldn't be able to eat much so I really plan what to eat so I get the nutrition I need. I made a mental switch when I decided to do this surgery that the things I ate before were not my friends. They got me to the point I was at and things needed to change. Sure I miss some foods but I can also find a way to have a healthier option if I really want it. I would rather get healthy and lose weight than eat junk. I don't really get hungry but I am also only 5 weeks post-op so who knows what may come. Good luck! -
Does your Protein supplement have either a lot of sugar or some form of lactose? It seems unlikely that your issue is protein and more that it is a problem with one of the ingredients. For example, I am almost 2 years out and I can't drink regular milk, eat most cheese, eat things with too much sugar, eat anything that has oil in it, or sometimes keep solid Proteins (chicken, steak, etc) down without throwing up. I have found though that 90% of the time I barf it is either because there was something on the food (a salad dressing, or it was cooked in oil) or it had some form of lactose in it. My sleeve was a little B from the very first day but she gradually got pickier, which is not the norm. It takes time to figure out what does and doesn't work for your sleeve and for a lot of people the sensitivity of the first few weeks goes away when you are back on normal food. Have you tried the Special K protein Water? No lactose, minimal sugar, and shouldn't make you sick. Almost everyone feels awful the first few weeks. I distinctly remember sobbing on the phone to my friend that I had ruined my life after surgery. Turns out I didn't ruin my life and now my life is very happy and normal. Keep the faith that this will all be worth it in the end.

I was sleeved on 8.7 and had to try different things after surgery. My pre-op diet was sugar free CIB with Protein five times per day. Since the surgery I have been having watery stools. I switched from the sugar free CIB with whey protein to Fairlife milk. That seemed to help. I had a sugar free pudding last night and had the watery stools again this morning. I'm beginning to wonder if I can't tolerate the sugar free products like I used to. Has anyone experienced that? Other than the stool issue I feel great. Stopped pain meds on day 2 post-op, driving and running errands, walked at the gym yesterday and today for over 30 minutes. Thanks! -C

Sounds like you already know what you should be doing, from prior experience. Keep it up! And yes, it's totally expected to lose some strength post-op. No matter how hard you work at getting in protein and being as active as reasonably possible, you are guaranteed to lose some muscle mass as you are dropping pounds.

Protein shakes have always been difficult for me too. There are some clear isopure drinks that some people love (and some people hate). There are also syntrax nectars that are more juice like and most people seem to like them

Your head appears to be in the right place @@sbdooly73 The chances are, you'll be able to sort something out with your Protein... You'll get various opinions here but the important one is the opinion of your NUT... They're the ones who will know all the appropriate details to give you advice that's pertinent to your situation... The best of luck to you... I look forward to seeing you post your updates in here...

I was banded last Wednesday as well! Congrats to us both! Are you already on food? I am on my pre op liquid diet until I see my surgeon on Thursday. I found that my blenderized protein shakes were putting too much air into my system, which is still trying to get rid of the surgical gas. So as soon as I would drink some of my shake, the gas pain in my left shoulder would come back with a vengeance. Maybe that's contributing to your nausea. Just a thought.

There is so MUCH food on the ship, you'll find lots of choices! I took a cruise at about 6 weeks out. My suggestion is make sure anything you try is very wet, chew chew chew, and stop as soon as you are feeling full. Drink tons of Water. I did bring my own Protein shakes too. I found they have lots of good fish on the ship, which is easy to digest and a fantastic source of protein. Take advantage of the variety! And chew chew chew! Have fun! And try not to look at people with crazy full plates from the buffet line with pity. It will shock you how much folks eat and you'll be trying to control your urge to recommend a good bariatric surgeon! Enjoy your trip! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

We cruised exactly 8 weeks post op from my sleeve surgery. I was sleeved in july, did a 7 day cruise in sept. No issues at all, i am not a Breakfast person, so i did bring my premiere Protein shakes. Lots of great choices. Main dinning room was actually easier for me than the buffet. Buffet tended to be a bit over whelming. In main dining room, i would order an appetizer, have a bite or two and share with hubby or kids, i would typically order two Entrees (one always the fish) so if it was something i didn't like, to tough or dry, i would have a fish to fall back on. Again, i have 3 kids and hubby that always wanted to share or taste so it wasn't a huge waste of food. And a BITE of a desert. In the dining room, because it is so long and drawn out, i didn't feel rushed, and food had time to "settle" between courses. I did do the buffet for lunch but wasnt really into it. It was more, i have got to put something into my stomach and ehhh this looks like it may be ok. This was a HUGE change from cruises in the past where EVERYTHING was about food food food. We had a blast. I wasn't full and out of breath and in need of a nap the whole trip. My sleeve isn't picky at all though. I can handle anything from bread and sweets, to Pasta, rice, and spicy. It can be both a blessing and a curse!

Cruise 16 days out
ladygg1967 replied to auntberber's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for that info! I'll be putting that on my list of "things to do before the cruise"!! Best wishes to you during this journey! It was really easy actually. I sent an email to the person who handles special diet requests to ask permission to bring my Protein shakes, and during our conversation, I explained my diet needs. I was told to meet with the restaurant manager shortly after boarding. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
I went out for one last day of freedom before I have to go back to teaching. I celebrated my summer weight loss (32 lbs) with a spa manicure/pedicure and then to lunch with my friend. We picked Red Lobster. I've been eating alot of shrimp at home so I felt that was a good choice. Of course the killer garlic biscuits came out (I'm five weeks postop) and smelled so good. I thought of how terrible it would make me feel. I took one morsel off and tried it, while good, I thought it wasn't worth the risk and sat it off to the side. That would be taken home for my family to enjoy. I ordered the "Quick Catch Lunch- Garlic Shrimp Scampi and Wood Grilled Chicken". I ate the scampi, boxed up the potato (said I didn't want the rice/couldve got broccoli too) , chicken, and some biscuits. I packed an insulated lunch box in advance knowing I'd have left overs (we shopped all day). I was full and felt good. When I got home to track on myfitnesspal.com I saw that that meal had 41 grams of Protein and 332 calories. I ate some of the chicken for supper so I thought that was a good protein choice. On a side note, my friend's side ceaser salad didn't come out before her meal so the server offered it to go for her. It looked quite cute in it's container. So that might be an option for the next time if I get a dinner instead of just lunch. At six weeks my doctor told me that I could add in small amounts of lettuce. I think that means a piece of a sandwich. Any way....good lunch option I thought.

My surgery is on Wednesday. I'm really excited about it, nervous too. I have been reading these " Lapband didn't work for me" posts and those scare me, I mean granted I truly believe that if you follow the diet and you have discipline in nutrition/exercise it will work. This is a big step for me, I'm looking forward to not having to worry about future health problems and being able to go shopping!!! Although I'm already sick of my protein shakes, and it's really too hot to be working out...I'm doing it. I'm also looking forward to using this board more and more as I progress...so...I'll let you all know how it goes!

The special K Protein drinks don't really have enough protein. I looked into them. I used to do Atkins but like I said post surgery didn't like them anymore. I would check out vitalady.com she has tons of brands and samples you can try...

Advice And Suggestions For The Spouse
barkatt replied to barkatt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you! We're still young and don't have kids yet' date=' so it's just the two of us. I definitely don't want to push her away or be pushed away - which we both agree on. The "stupid" divorce rates are very concerning to me, and I don't want to become a part of the statistic. Hopefully we'll be able to communicate our feelings and concerns throughout all of this. That's a really good point! I honestly felt a little alianated from her the first couple of days, but the drugs in her system might have something to do with that. That and the fact that I was kind of scared out of my mind and very worried. Not to mention the physical and mental exhaustion she was going through! We're both learning a lot about healthier eating and living, so I don't think the lifestyle changes in the food department is going to be a problem. Well, apart from my addiction to a little sweet now and then. Alternatives to that won't be a problem, though, as we're prepared to alter our current ideals and thought-processes in regards of "Saturday-sweets". Everything is however so much easier to say, than to do. I know. I'm trying to be helpful in the kitchen, making meals and keeping an eye on her Protein and Fluid intake. Looking forward to giving her something else than fluids, though - hopefully without the dumping syndrome. So far, so good! Thank you all for the replies, I really appreciate it. I know I can't feel what she feels, but at least I can try to understand and be as supportive and helpful as possible. -
Advice And Suggestions For The Spouse
LosingItForMe2011 replied to barkatt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
barkatt - I think it's great that you want to support her in every way you can. Believe me that in itself is helping her more than you know. How about looking up different Protein shake recipes to help change the flavors for her? Making sure she has all her Vitamins set for when she can start taking them again. Perhaps getting her set up with a bento box for when she can eat, some pretty measuring cups and spoons, food scale...all things to make getting the right portions right for her. How about buying a Bariatric cook book for when she's ready to eat regular foods and both of you can cook through the cookbook together That's what hubby and I are going to do. Good luck to you both -
On yesterday, 12/28/11 I had the following: Isopure Protein 50 grams of protein shake Multi-vitamin Calcium Water And I ran 3 1/2 miles!

You may not be getting enough nutrition. My surgeon wouldn't approve of your diet. Once I got past the healing stage I was expected to eat a large variety of three solid meals per day. I am not to use shakes as a meal, I am not supposed to eat soft mushie foods as a meal. Feeling worn-down and tired is a huge sign that you are lacking in something. The goal is certainly to lose weight but to do it healthfully with a diet that you can follow for life. Are you able to exercise sufficiently on your diet? I think I would be too tired and dizzy to move around much if I ate like that and I was not a strenuous exerciser until very recently. I do not measure but I eat an average of 3/4 cup of food per meal. Veggies, meat and cheese added to 1/4 cup of eggbeater or 1/2 cup of Cereal with 1/4 cup of skim milk for breakfast. lunch and dinner is solid lean Protein with fresh veggies. And I have managed to lose steadily eating that way. I have had a ton of energy and felt great...Just something to consider.

Remember that not everyone gets tight when they fly, but I know there are a number of threads/posts where people say they do. I can't speak for everyone, but I think the stress of travel adds to normal altitude tightness. Did I pack everything? Do I have all my documents and gear? etc. To answer your question, I don't "feel" anything. I just notice that I can't eat much solid food flying day and for much of the day after. I'm usually back to normal by evening the second day. I stick to soups, protein drinks and soft foods until the swelling goes down and the band loosens up. You have so many new and exciting things to look forward to! Best wishes on your upcoming wedding and your banding. You'll have to share a wedding photo with all of us! Oh, and a trip to Spain sounds WONDERFUL too! My hubby and I are headed off diving in 3 weeks, but nothing as exciting as Spain! In my pre-band days, I was using 21-22 pounds of weight. Last trip (in the summer) I was using 16 pounds. I am most sure I"ll be able to drop another pound. After this trip I've got to get some new gear, and a thicker suit - BRRRR!

What Kind of Protein Bar Do You Perfer?
ksc1965 replied to enjoythetime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Power Crunch bars taste really good. Fewer grams of Protein than the bar you bought but still "good" as bars go. And like I said, you can't beat the taste. Have only been able to find them at Wal-Mart and Meijer. chocolate, vanilla and Peanut Butter. For chocolate bar. .. Calories= 205 Fat=13g Carbs=10g Protein=13g -
Head Hunger
Ms skinniness replied to Look@meitsEmily's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you drink another protein shake. Drink some more water and keep yourself busy. This will pass, the HA is most likely stress related and low intake of carbs. This is just my opinion, I am not a medical doctor. -
I'm a newbie to this and trying to figure out which powders I find tasty. I just got some unjury and Syntrax samples. I get my psych evaluation this week so I'm about a month out or so. I currently dump a scoop in with some almond milk , ice, fruit, spinach etc. throw it all in a huge glass and off to work I go. I obviously won't be able to consume large Protein shakes after surgery, so my question is 2 part : 1)how do you sample to find which ones you like? Do you taste powder only, do you mix with Water, do you add all the fruits which I find hard to "taste" the powder then? 2) after surgery do you mainly make the fruit smoothies and add powder for Breakfast or do you add powder to water after workout? Guess I want to know a normal day of how Protein Powder is consumed. I have not had any nutrition appts yet. I do have a vitamix which we love. Thanks
