    Will it get better

It was definitely from the sugar. It's similar to "dumping syndrome" in a bypass patient. Refined sugar (especially in liquid) travels through your sleeve very fast and enters your digestive track quickly and all at once...sending your body into a 'shock'. I know that it sucks but it should serve as reinforcement that refined sugars and added sugars are pure poison. It's a hard way to learn that lesson but it's one I'm sure you won't forget...I know I won't!!! Stick with your plan and stay positive. It does get better.
  2. Yesterday I had a Rita's Water ice and it was the worst mistake of my life I'm currently 17 days post op and I have no desire for solid food but I can drink water Popsicles and any liquids I don't have a problem getting down. Yesterday after I had the water ice which I didn't even eat the whole thing my stomach started cramping ungodly I broke out in sweats I had diarrhea. That did go away but a few hours later I started with chills and severe shakes I became dizzy got a fever more stomach cramping and more diarrhea... I know I did it to myself by having that water ice which wasn't sugar free but I'm really starting to second guess this surgery I'm miserable and I don't know how to cope until I can get to my new norm I feel like I'll never eat again ....any encouragement would help Sent from my Z828 using the BariatricPal App

  4. I had surgery July 9th and it went very well. I stayed in the hospital three nights - they said I could leave after 2 but I wanted to stay one more. I was up and walking 1/2 hour after surgery and then every 2 hours after that. There was pain and I would compare it to a c- section. There are sometimes sharp pains sometimes just pulls other times it feels like its burning. But manageable - I had 1 what the hell did I do to myself moment in the hospital but it passed. I am getting my Protein and Water in and have a good schedule with the Vitamins. I think it's all about a schedule and doing your best to keep to it. food hasn't been any problem but I'm still on full liquids - Tuesday I start the third stage so we will see how that goes. I look forward to this journey and where it takes me. I'm hoping I can get clearance to go back to Zumba my exercise of choice!! If anyone is thinking about this surgery do your research and educate yourself. I interviewed three surgeons before deciding on mine. You have to have faith in them and have a support system. My sister had the sleeve so she can answer most of my questions and is a great help. Good luck!!!
  5. I felt more like eating when I was allowed on day 8 to move to creamy/puree soups. I never even liked tomato soup; now I have it for breakfast.
  6. Post op day 10 and for the past 2 days I feel like a different person!!! I am finally able to eat foods that I have to chew! Every night I've walked my block 1.04 miles. I'm sleeping on my right side (port) relatively pain free. Cooked hubby dinner last night. Yesterday was the first day I haven't required a nap. Cleaning the house today and feeling a lot more accomplished!!!

    Just wondering

Everyone's plan is different, and I would recommend that you stick with whatever your plan states for you. If you are unaware, ask your surgeon or NUT and I'm sure they'll have an answer for you. For me, it was at about the 60-day mark when I had a few sips of wine. I didn't try to push it beyond that, and I don't drink very often at all. My nutritionist labels any alcohol the same as refined carbs -- "empty calories"...and they are just that. When you can't eat very much nutritious foods during the day, you learn very quickly to become stingy with the calories that you can consume, and so I try to opt for things that are nutritious and will actually feed my body. Alcohol just isn't one of those things, no matter how much I wished it was. I do believe that there are some very real antioxidant qualities in red wine though, so I will have a sip or two now and again, but only after I eat and only on special occasions...it's never really been a regular thing for me. But best advice would be to speak with your NUT/surgeon to your specific plan and be stingy with those calories! Make sure what you do consume is nutritious! Best of luck!

    Having Trouble Eating

Try to go see a counselor. Talking to an independent person is invaluable to relieve stress and help you through this. If you don't get ahold of this your lack of liquid and food will end you up in the hospital. Please get help. Good luck
  9. Help! We are supposed to go out to dinner to celebrate my grandmothers birthday this Friday. Problem is she picked an Italian restaurant to go to. I will be on "soft solid" foods at this point. Any ideas of what I could order?!?

    Meal portion size

I dont measure, I serve myself MUCH smaller meals than what I used to but I still often overserve, I just leave what I cant finish. Its still incredibly hard not to clear my plate though, old habits die hard. I eat about as much as my 3 year old, lol. I also dont do the Protein first thing, I eat a bit of everything. It really alarms me that people are being told to favour one food over another, I very strongly disagree with it. Its not a healthy meal if you get your chicken in but leave your veges. So I eat about equal amounts of each. I tend to leave the potato or rice off my plate a lot of the time, because that's probably the least valuable, and I eat better carbs at other times of the day.

    Meal portion size

As my restriction increased (and I did this very slowly), my portion sizes changed considerably. I don't measure food, but have learned to "eyeball" (is that a Southern term?) the amounts...1/2 chicken breast is about right, and sometimes it is too much. I eat about 1/3 cup of veggies if they are cooked. I can eat about 3/4 cup of salad, including any meat that is in it. I just pass on the bread, most of the time. If it really looks good to me, then I'll break off a bite, just to taste it. Hope this helps! Cindy
  12. Hello gentlemen, quick question. I was banded on March 1st with the new Realize Band from Johnson and Johnson. I was on the liquid diet for a few weeks and then went to pureed. My question is over the past few weeks, I have gotten the hiccups really bad after eating a couple of times. I think it is related to over eating and needing to learn portion control. I have not gotten sick yet but uncomfortable. Any thoughts? Also if you have any types on what I can eat on the soft food diet would be greatly appreciated. I have the list from the surgeon but tips from others who have been there is beneficial too. Thanks guys. I appreciate your input.
  13. Well, if it doesn't at least you will have company. I am in the same boat and can drink like a champ. Now that being said, I don't chug (I tried it once and I could feel a small bit of pressure) but can drink very smoothly with no pauses. I think everyone's a bit different out of the gate and I have seen many past posts where people started off like this but did run into more restriction when actual food was introduced. I wouldn't worry too much just yet! Sent from my iPad using VST

What can I eat in the puree phase?

Can you eat actual baby food during this phase? Like the natural ones in the jar?
  15. yes with the exception of the meat. You can actually eat the baby food in jars. Baby food has less seasoning and won't have all the things used to flavor. I got some of the all natural or organic ones so that I could have it in my purse when out on the go or at work. When at home I made my own with roasting veggies and blending until it was the same texture as the jar foods or applesauce.

I had clear liquids for days 1 and 2 only. From 3 to 14 days i can have any of those clear liquids plus: stage 1 baby food (had pears this morning, wasnt to bad!) lowfat yoguart sf pudding or custard strained cream Soups (tomato, cream of chicken, mushroom, celery, brocc cheese, mix them for better flavors, add seasoning!) vegetable juice non fat, 1% of 2% milk I was told to eat 3 to 5 times a day 2 to 4 oz of whatever i pick above, all the while fitting in 1 protien drink and of course the water! Ive found it kinda hard to get it all in, im only on day 4 so im probably pretty swollen still. Hope this helps, im down 3.5 lbs since surgery monday!

    Y- minus 7 days

I have to give a big WooHooo! I'm at 289lbs, that 35lbs lost!!! I'm doing really good following the low fat/low carb diet. I am feeling a little limited in my food choices though. I could use some great recipes. I had a very surreal moment today too. I love reading all the posts on the VGS board both good and bad and everything in between. I love giving encouragement and praying. Hugs and prayers have been my tag line, Why? Because I wish I could just reach out and give you all a hug to let you know I'm there for you, and prayers because, well, that's what I do. I believe if you talk the talk then you walk the walk too. But until know, it's always been the "other" people. It finally dawned on me, "This is going to be me this time next week " By 12:30 next Monday, I will have my sleeve, be in my room, learning all over again how to eat and begin with a fresh start in life. I have to be at the hospital by 7am and surgery is 9 am. Oh man, all I can do is say "Wow, it's happening so fast!!!" Don't get me wrong, I'm excited and rearing to go but.... well... OH MAN, WOW!!!
  20. :myscared:Hi all... I had a very strange thing happen to me last night & I wanted to put it out there for comment. I was banded on July 27, 2006 & have been on the post-op diet as required by my surgeon---& doing very well on it, too. This week is the week for going back to a regular diet of solids so last night I decided to give it a try. I became VERY emotional about the whole thing & I can't really put my finger on why:noidea:. I don't know which I am: a. Afraid of I'll eat everything I can lay my hands on;:hungry: b. Afraid of regaining the weight I've lost to date;:funscale: c. So thankful to finally be able to eat "real" food again:clap2:; d. Afraid of not being able to stop eating; e. I'm just food phobic; f. Afraid I'll physically hurt myself by eating; g. I'm just a nut case:crazy:. My 1st fill is on Sept 9th. :help:

    To be banded on 3/24

Hi there, um, n2b42L! (Do you have another name? That's kinda clunky. ) Welcome and congratulations on your decision! I love to hear about medical people choosing the band because it brings home the point about its relative safety. Now to your questions: I was banded on Wednesday and home the same day (before 2:00 p.m.!) It took me until Sunday to feel really "over" the surgery--I'm sure that's because of the anaesthesia. Physically I was pretty much totally mobile by Friday, although my head was still very foggy. I went back to work on Monday and had no problems. Of course, I have a desk job so it was easy. For the first two weeks I was on full liquids and soft foods, and I didn't have trouble with it at all. I used it as an excuse to eat all the exotic things my family doesn't like, such as goat cheese, hummus, and tzatziki. The idea of pureeing regular food made me retch just to think about it, so I didn't do that. I just ate something different from the rest of my family for a while. Solid foods were just a take-it-slow proposition. It was hard--and still is, after a lifetime of bolting food--to take it bite by bite and really listen to my body, but I'm working on it.

12 days post op = struggling

Yeah, so I've lived off of milk and home made broth. Tomorrow I start purees in earnest, and that will go much better! I've been lucky to not be sick, probably because I didn't push all those fake things. Oh, and Siggies drinkable yogurt or kieffer is da bomb.

    Hunger

Glad to hear you reread your info. We need to stay away from sugars! Yogurt id good for you but stick to greeo yogurts. High in protein which will help to keep u feeling fuller. Yoplait greeo 100's or the light and fit greek is good too. Just watch which you choose for sugar content. Also the plain nonfat greek is good too if you like it. Good to substitute for sour cream or add fressh fruit for the natural sugar sweetener. I also ise it when making my own protein shakes. I do half cup frozen berries, about 3 oz of skim milk, half cup of greek nonfat plain yogurt and a scoop of vanilla or plain whey protein isolate and half a banana. Its good for 2 servings and about 300-350 in cal depending on ur fruit and protein u use. Just stick with foods high in.protein amd low in fat and the less sugar the better. Try to stay away from premade or boxed anything. The more natural the better and the lbs will start to melt away. Dont forget to exercise religuosly too. I am just 7 months and am now down 117lbs so it works. Good luck to you and congrats on your journey.

    Not doing good......at all!

Hi Hammer, I agree with everything LJM had to say. I live in an area where there is no support group at all---so I understand that part of it! I come here to LBT---I usually get help, understanding and loving support! I have also told everyone in real life, so have people who know--so that too helps. I don't have a set amount of food I eat at one sitting. I try to plan my meals around what I consider to be healthy. Not 100% Protein, but also not much inthe starchy side of things either! I have never been one to seriously count my calories, etc. I had a goal to be healthy. I try to eat that way, and as much as I love food, I have to try to remember it is actually fuel for my body, and to try to get my enjoyment in life from something besides food!! I do enjoy food still, in a different way. Where before I would have a large steak and baked potato loaded, veggies and bread. I will now buy the best small filet steak I can find---and make a salad. I buy the tastiest salad dressings---I cannot eat a lot of it, so do not use the calories as my deciding factor. I eat a lot of spicy foods. It makes my palate happy with less food. I get more enjoyment in less bulk. Maybe that is my mind playing tricks--but it works! As for the PB's---have you seen a pattern in them? Certain foods? Places? Time of day? I found myself getting the golf ball feeling everyday when I would go to lunch with DH---finally decided I was either eating too fast, or not chewing well--or likely both. I have to seriously concentrate in those situations. Try keeping track, and see if a pattern emerges. Til then, like LJM said, be sure to go back to liquids following a PB, or you are setting yourself up for another due to swelling, and an evil cycle begins sometimes. And like she said, exercise! Even several short walks a day do amazing things!!! Good Luck~~ Keep us posted~ Kat

    Not doing good......at all!

    1. How much food should I be eating per meal ( 1 cup, 1/2 cup or what?) and should that be making me feel full? It all depends on your body. If you can lose with 1 cup of food then that is great. In my case, it takes me 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food to really lose more than 1 lb per week. It is very important if you decide to get another fill to eat less to have Protein. In my case, I always start the day off with 30 grams of protein in a shake. That way I can then consume another 30 throughout the day. I eat probably 5 small meals a day. 2. I seem to PB a lot, is that normal? How much is a lot? For me when I am tight it is quite common to PB once daily or every other day. 3. I have a 10 cc band and have had 5 cc's worth of fills and get "stuck" a lot now, should I get more fills and just eat soft foods that won't get stuck? There are 2 types of tightness per my doctor. Tightness to liquids and tightness to solids. If you are tight to liquids that is not a good thing. If you are tight to solids and don't mind eating softer foods and still lose it is a personal decision on whether or not you should stay there. Also, keep in mind that the folks who have lost a ton of weight fast exercise a lot. Are you mobile enough to do a few minutes on the treadmill? 70 lbs is fantastic. Remember the average weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week. Typically the first year you can lose 50-60% of your excess body weight. 10 lbs a month which you are running puts you at 120 lbs your first year. That is reasonable but you must exercise regularly and have good restriction. I have seen one member on these boards lose 200 lbs in 18 months. JulieNYC is her name . You can find her under plastic surgeries has she has had a few. You may want to send her a private message asking her what her secrets are. she is wonderful and I'm sure it would be very helpful. Keep the faith. The band does work. For some of us, it just a slower process. Julie
