I had the band to bypass 1 month ago. Feeling pretty good! Haven't puked once that's the weird thing. I can lay down and not have my food come back up. So considering my newness.... it's pretty darn good!

I've had my band for almost two years and i started off great, i had lost 33lbs, in the first two months, but then started gaining it back. I was filled almost to compacity and i still could eat almost as much as i wanted, but had to get unfilled a couple of times because it just made everything uncomfortable going down. I can eat way much than I should, and it's hard controlling the head hunger. I've been wanting to have mine removed for the past year, but I hear it's not the simple. I wished i had gotten the bypass, and i did gain back enough weight recently to probably qualify. But I don't know if I really want to go to that extreme. I don't want to give up, but I'm frustrated with my weight and difficulty in losing the weight.

So, I started this whole journey in October 2016. I had just started a new job, whose insurance plan does not cover any weight loss plans, including surgery. So, I opted out and started calling around to different companies. I THOUGHT I found a plan that would cover it (the saleslady said it would!), but, I was duped. Fast forward 7 months, my parents agreed to pay (they are not wealthy people, so I know what the burden is). Now, here's the thing, I started with such a high BMI, that my surgeon refused to do the gastric bypass. He also advised that I probably would not find a surgeon who would. Instead, we decided to do the procedure in stages. So, I have a gastric sleeve, which I love. Now, I need to find an insurance plan to cover the bypass. My surgeon documented everything from the beginning to indicate that this was the plan all along, so that if I found a plan, they can't reject based on perceived failure of the initial operation. My question for you all is: Does anyone know of a plan in Ohio that will cover weight loss surgery?

Right after surgery, your body is in a major heal mode for a couple weeks and it is difficult for some patients to meet their daily Fluid and Protein requirements. But keep trying each day and you should be able to get there. The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after RNY gastric bypass surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.

November 30th was my first time back to the Dr. Office. All went well! No problems thus far eating. I am surprised that I can eat but I am sure not eating what I used too:) I will not get a fill for about a month and I am looking forward to it. I am not feeling too much restriction from the band. I know it is there and I eat less, however, I thought that I would be able to eat a bite and be finished. I can eat 2 scrambled eggs! I was hoping It would be more like 1. I need some tough love from my band I think:biggrin: I wanted to see a more rapid wieght loss! I have to say that I did loose 9.5 lbs since the 20 though. I guess that is not too bad.http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/wa5VtfX/]

I felt like I was very prepared for everything that occurred when I went for my surgery Wednesday. The nurses and doctors seemed to respond well when I knew the answer to some of their questions. I'm home now and I'm only tolerating Jello in micro amounts and Water. Not supposed to add a Protein shake ( 1 through the whole day) until tomorrow. Also the endocrinologist in the hospital reduced my insulin already by a lot!!!! I'm finding the hardest thing is getting up and down....and finding a comfy way to rest. My abdominal muscles really ache. Overall....I'd say I'm still thrilled with my decision to have the surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi, my name is Leilani and I had RnY bypass on 4-4-18. I am wondering if an increase in appetite is normal at almost 3 months out? I feel like I can eat more and it honestly scares me! And when I look at the scale I feel like everyone else who has had this surgery has lost way more than I have. Is this normal? I know I shouldn't compare myself to others but sometimes it's hard! And I know I can't expect instant results but I just feel like my weight loss is sluggish even though I'm working out every day and eating and drinking properly.

I had bypass 22 months ago. I have never been able to eat high amounts of fat, even before surgery. A keto diet would kill me for sure! But since surgery, fat tolerance was even less at first. I have gradually been able to add more fat into my diet, but fat malabsorption has been evident since the beginning. It was most noticeable by light colored stools that float. They are more normal colored now, but still "floaties." I think I eat a lot of fat in the nuts, peanut butter, and seeds I consume, along with a small avocado nearly every day. But I find myself sort of craving fat sometimes. However, even when I try to eat more of it, I think it just goes right on through. My fat soluble vitamin levels have always been fine, and I will have those tested again in February. I am also going to talk to the Dietician about this, because if I crave fat, that must mean I am not absorbing what my body needs. That is the only malabsorption issue I think I have had with the bypass.

Frustrated, annoyed and I'm new so heres my story
Nikkeystar posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My name is Shanecia and I'm 30 years old, I'm 5'6" about 345lbs . I have been overweight as long as I can remember. About 2 1/2 years ago I decided to have WLS, my pcp suggested that I get the lapband so that's what I had my mind set on when I went to my first consultation with the surgeon. After meeting with her and telling her my medical conditions and eating habits she suggested that I get RNY. I was fine with that..........it took me another year and a half to actually do everything that my insurance company required. I was approved in December 2009. Well since it had been over a year since I saw the surgeon I had to make an appointment to come in to see her. After the visit I was really discouraged....because of a previous blood clot in my lungs and leg she wanted me to be cleared by a hematologist which I was already being followed by but she wanted me to see a hematologist at the hospital where I'm going to have to surgery and she also wanted me to lose 25lbs :biggrin0:, she never told me this on my initial visit. My sister had just had gastric bypass surgery at that same hospital with a different doctor. So I made an appointment to see sisters doctor, I saw him about a week later and he wanted me to have some more blood work from the hematologist that I had been seeing for over 2 years. After seeing my hematologist and having the blood work done my Iron was extremely low which it had been in the past so I had to get IV iron. Once the hematologist sent the note over to my surgeon and mentioned that I was getting iv iron he decided that because of the malabsorption he didn't want me to get the rny, but the DS in 2 stages instead. However he really doesn't want me to get the second part of the surgery and I didn't like that one bit, lol. I wasn't to sure how I felt about that until I found you all. I didn't think that I could lose the weight that I need to lose without that malabsorption. Now I know that I can do it. So now I'm waiting for my insurance company to switch my approval over the DS. So that's how I ended up on this site which has been very informative to me and has helped to learn so much about a surgery that had never even crossed my mind. Now my frustrations comes in here........my oldest sister had the rny back in Feb my other sister just got her date today for august and I'm still waiting. I feel like it's never going to happen for me, every time I think I'm getting close something else comes up. And every time that I say something about being frustrated my sisters act like I'm not supposed to be frustrated and it annoys me to no end. I've waited so long and I know deep down that it is going to happen but can I just vent a little. I'm sorry for such a long post, but I just needed to get this off my chest since I don't really have anyone else to share this with. Thank you all in advance for the support that I know I'm going to get now and in the future. -
My BMI was 32.44 when I had mine, I'm 14 months out and no problems, weight loss has slowed down immensely. My bypass is just over 9'.

I had a gastric bypass in 1982 with a lot of success and no problems. I lost over 100#. Unfortunately I gained my weight back most of it in the last 5 years. I'm looking into a new procedure that repairs enlarged gastric outlets plus decrease the pouch. Has anyone had this done? If so how did it go. Thank-you

And advice from a sadder and wiser new-vet. Keep your protein count up, you won't heal well without it. Here I sit at OSU-Wexner Medical center where I have been a guest since Wednesday November 28. I have a stomal stricture and ulcerstions in my pouch (I am. RNY) and jejunem, 2nd small intestine segments used in my bypass, I couldn't sustain healing on my liquid P.O .diet, so I have a PICC LINE and am receiving T.P.N. FLUID THROUGH the PICC line in my upper left arm. Don't worry, I am a rather special case, less than 5% bypassers and fewer yet sleeves have this trial. More likely Donal J Trump will pay you a house call to state he's giving up Twitter. Yeah but you could enhance S.F. Jello with unflavored protein powder to up protein count. All those things are a good start but need a little more to them. A very good. resource thread you were given. This battle is not always easy but when YOU DO WIN the war it is so so good! -
Learning to work with the band
Queen Fig replied to ElfiePoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am right there with you except for the diabetic part. In fact, I have only lost 35 lbs. I expected so much more. However, this is the first time I have actually KEPT weight off, so I am happy about that. I think I am finally understanding this band almost 1 year out. I was banded Nov. 17, 2009. I am also an emotional eater but am learning to control that too. Sometimes I wonder if I should have done gastric bypass instead, but as long as I can continue to lose, albeit slowly, I can learn to be patient. I am going to get one more tiny fill so I am not tempted to eat things like pizza and bread in any form..as I can eat a bit of it now. Then I think I will be at my sweet spot...whether it's real or mental. I wish you luck and continued success. You really are doing well...maybe just not what you expected. -
Hi there, I had a port that was too big for my body I guess is the best way to describe it, it was bonking against my rib area and causing considerable pain, then of course it was getting bonked back causing the port to be pulled around in side (although stitched in it was yanking a bit) So, my Surgeon did a port revision on November 19th, he ordered a low profile port (smaller and thinner is how he described it) and replaced the old one with the new one. I feel really good now, no pain whatsoever from my port  Other people have port revisions for different reasons, so I guess the term could be used for many different situations.

One Month Post Op But Very Minimal Weight Loss
BarbaraG replied to lilac025's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are doing FANTASTIC! I think there is a general misconception that the weight will "simply melt off in enormous quantities" like in gastric bypass. It doesn't. Period. We are considered a success when we loose 1-2 lbs a week. You selected banding, which is MUCH healthier in the long run. And statistics have shown that while GB's will loose faster in the beginning, by year 3, bandsters have caught up AND are more successful at keeping the weight off long term. Plus we get the added advantages of: 1) No digestive issues - we do not loose any of our stomach! 2) We can have 'tune-ups' or a fill. GB have no such recourse. 3) Band is adjustable - no "one size fits all". It can be unfilled if necessary and re-filled as needed. 4) We learn to eat correctly long term as we journey to the Green Zone and IF WE CHOOSE to comply with our required eating plans, have a greater chance of long term success than GB's My Gastroenterologist told me he wanted to tell people who wanted GB to consider the number of new cases he got each year of people who had had GB and now were in serious or life threatening gastric situations (like cancer) and who seriously complicated his ability to help them. He was totally anti bypass, but very supportive of LapBand. All this to say, give yourself a break - you're doing fabulous! -
One Month Post Op But Very Minimal Weight Loss
Aummie58 replied to lilac025's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just banded last week and have lost since then. I came into the banding process since I do know how to lose weight. I lost 102 pounds in 2 years but could not keep it all off. I have found through TOPS ( Take Off Pounds Sensibly) how to gradually lose and maintain weight in the long run. I was banded because even with working out 5-7 hours a week and eating reasonably I put back on 35 pounds and could not get my control back. I can tell you that losing 1-2 pounds a week is much easier on your system and it does not cause skin sagging or massive hair loss. I have a friend who had GB in November and has lost over 80 pounds but her her hair is falling out and she looks 10 years older. So be patient... it is worth waiting for!! -
although I don't think I had such dreams (I usually don't remember my dreams, so I don't know for sure), I suppose that's not uncommon when people have upcoming surgeries. Just rest assured that WLS is one one of the safest surgeries there is - safer than a hip replacement surgery. Mortality rate is something like 0.3% on the bypass, even lower for the sleeve. That means there's a 99.7% chance you're going to pull through just fine. Complications aren't common and, when they exist, are usually minor. I had a stricture, which happens to about 5% of bypass patients (making it one of the more common complications). It was an easy fix. Try not to worry about it - this is a very low-risk surgery and I'm sure you'll do just fine. You're at more risk staying overweight than you are having WLS.

Mental Anguish over Decision
melclark2 replied to Worrier No. 1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I too felt like it was almost like reading my own post, I was banded in 2008, went from HW of 318, down to lowest of 199, then up to 217ish before having band removed last summer cause of the complications of it slipping. I am so excited to being close to gastric bypass surgery in the next couple months. My hip and back pain got really really bad over the winter. Starting to move again in last few months but looking forward to moving even more. -
Mental Anguish over Decision
Crosby replied to Worrier No. 1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have never been banded but I am in my 50's and walking with a cane due to hip issues. Three years ago I lost 130 pounds with WW and was mountain biking, running and weight lifting...living like crazy. Then my hip was injured and I ate to deal with the injury and limited mobility. Hip surgery followed but so did 80 pounds. Recently reinjured the hip ( likely due to the weight) and I am sure I will need surgery again. That was my last straw. I can't wait to have bypass surgery and have very little hesitation. I know I will either physically die from obesity or emotionally die from my inability to have the life I want. I am diving into this opportunity full force. I know I can be successful and that is half the battle. Whatever you decide I wish you the very very best.
