I have been struggling with my weight since I gave birth to my first kid. I will never forget; I was 185 lbs when I left the hospital (19 yrs. old) and it’s been a roller coaster since. When I left the hospital they put me on the Depo Provera birth control shot and I blew up. I figured that was the best option since taking my BC pills daily was a concern. I was too busy enjoying life lol. My weight at that time increased to 260 so I went on a serious diet and was able to lose 48 lbs. I went down to 212 lbs. and that was my lowest weight in my adult years. My weight gradually increased again but I never went over 260 lbs. I was always lucky enough to maintain that weight. I would occasionally go on diets to lose weight when I had something big coming up or going on vacation, but of course nothing last. I tried Weight watchers, Curves, Phentermine 37.5 mg, Zantrex 3, and the Lemonade diet. I was able to lose the most with Phentermine but I think my body got too used to it in the end. Up until my I had my 2nd child I didn’t really worry much about my weight. I figured as long as I don’t go over 260 I’m good. Well that quickly changed when I had my son. I was 240 lbs. when I got pregnant and only gained 20 lbs. during my entire pregnancy. I was active and tried my best to limit my calorie intake. However, after I gave birth it was a wrap, my weight increased to a whopping 270, and when I got laid it increased to 313. My highest ever! I started thinking about Bariatric back in 2012 but it was going to be the lap band. After speaking to a few ppl I realized it wasn’t for me. My son is now 5 and weight is something I think about constantly. It’s hard for me to keep up w/ him and I find myself missing out because I pretty much hide in my house. He spends a lot of time w/ his father or his sister because it’s hard for me to move around. I get tired quickly, my body starts to ache, and I just don’t want to be seen. I told myself this is not a way to live life and I’m missing my son grow up so I finally make the decision to do something about it. First it was the Sleeve, but after further research and speaking with ppl that had both surgeries done I decided to change my mind to the Gastric Bypass. My surgeon’s office submitted for approval last week and I’m been impatiently waiting. I’m scared to death, but I know in the long run this is the best option for me. When I started the weight loss journey I was 306 and now I’m at 280. Once we get the approval I will start the pre-op diet and hopefully will be able to lose another 10 lbs. before surgery. My goal weight is 175 but my doctor wants me to get down to 150. Personally I think that’s a bit small but he knows best.

New Guy In This Forum, Just Received My Band On 7/16
arosenberg posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello from San Diego! Just got banded three days ago and already am losing weight, though I know it's water weight at the start. Still in a bit of pain, but not bad. My surgeon cleared me today to start drinking "full" liquids, and I had some protein shakes that were quite a relief after being on clear liquids for a few days. I, too, look forward to getting off of the weight yo-yo and being able to maintain weight loss for a change. -
Welcome...i was the samw way...if i drank anything cold my stomach would spasm... All i drink now is room temp, hot or warm drinks...i bought bariwise hot chocolate taste decent and it has 15gm of protein...

5 weeks post op and no weight loss
sbca01 replied to sbca01's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wake up- walk 2-3 miles- Protein shake (pre made same ones I used pre op), I am on feet all day for work- shake for lunch, hard boiled eggs (example) for snack, small protein dinner. Bed around 11pm. No snacking. Probably 1000 calories a day. Maybe my portion sizes are too big because I'm not having any side effects and can still eat larger portions. Hi. I'll be your May 10th buddy. Our journeys seem to have started around the same time. I started my preop diet on 4/26 at 210 and am down to 202. I must admit, I'm concerned bcs I've not been able to get my 64 oz of Water on top of the shakes and Protein bars. I'm not generally a snacker so it's been difficult. I'm surprised however that I have not been hungry or anxious about food at all during this preop diet phase. I've had to get creative to dodge some bullets at some social functions this week but it wasn't too tough. I do find myself lying a lot as to why I can't eat. Lol (I already ate, I'm full, I can't drink bcs I'm on antibiotics, etc). I even held strong against my son's birthday cake. Mother's Day will be a big test. So as I'm trying to stay focused, I wish the same for you. Let's stay in touch. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

It's been posted before but I cut it in half because I wanted to try it first before making a larger batch. I thought this was really big enough for me. oatmeal ( not instant) 1/2 cup chocolate Protein powder 1/2 cup ( I used unjury powder) Peanut Butter 1/2 cup ( I used chunky Skippy) sugar free maple syrup ( enough to make mixture come together) Splenda sweetener packets 3 Heat peanut butter in microwave until warm. Add the oatmeal, Protein Powder and Splenda mix together with a spoon or fork. Add enough sugar free maple syrup to make the mixture come together so you can roll it into balls. I made them about an inch and got 12 balls out of this recipe . I still have to figure calories and protein amount. Refrigerator or freeze in airtight container.

Hello! I am new here and stumbled on the site accidentally while doing a google search for something else. Anywho, I am glad I found a site where others can relate to what I am going through and about to be going through. I am doing my pre-op diet, which isn't just liquids and have been on it since April 1st. My surgeon has me on that for a month due to me having to lose 60 pounds and then I will go for my endoscopy sometime in May and then get my date. I'm sure we all here have had to lose weight before getting the surgery, what kind of exercise did you all do and what kind of Protein brands do you all like? I'm kind of having trouble finding flavors I like, and so far the ones I do drink make me cringe when it is going down. lol

I'm on day 5 of pre-op all liquid diet. I have surprised myself at how well I've handled it. However, I'm struggling right now! It's Friday night and we would normally eat out. Instead, I am cooking a yummy meal for my family at home (which they will love). When I stopped for groceries on the way home I realized that I had forgotten to drink my 2:00 shake and I was hungry (maybe the 5th true hungry I have felt this week)! So, grocery shopping that hungry was hard! I got home and began prepping the meal (cooking has been strangely helpful this week as it keeps me busy and after I cook and clean up I don't feel like eating). I fixed a cup of coffee with unflavored protein- I had to force it probably because I let myself get over-hungry. I popped a big popper full of popcorn for my kids (who am I kidding- I wanted to smell it and savor the scent)....it's never smelled so delicious! I ate 6 kernels and I'm so mad at myself. I've been the pre-op diet saint! I just needed to come here and confess and apologize

Hi all, It has been a bit since I have been on. I got my band on june 10th. I am scared because I think I am at a stand still. I am having problems eating only 1/2 a cup at a time. I try to keep my portions small, but I have to admit with the holidays I have eaten more than I should. My doctor felt I had enough fill about a month and a half ago. At first I felt the fill but now I feel like I did before the band. Except I can feel the restiction when I each dry type foods. Such as bread or a bit of cake. I don't eat cake often at all. I had a couple bday parties and had a small slice. What scares me is what if I don't need another fill? I am still battling with my love for food. I also feel I am losing so slow. Now I love my band. Wouldn't change a thing. I also knew it would be a challenge. I have lost 34lbs in 6months. I really thought I would atleast be down 50lbs by now. I work out 5 or six times a week. I should eat more protein though. I know my band is in good shape. What I was wondering is if anyone else feels this struggle? Also does it sound like I can use another fill? I think I should. Although I know I will struggle with dryer foods. I have no problem with almost all foods. In fact other than a quick feeling of pressure for a second as the bread goes down I feel no restriction. I am not at all trying to put the band down I just need some friends. If you made it this far through this thanks for reading my book.lol

I'm a week out and just finally have been able to get Water in like I'm supposed to and I even finished a whole Protein shake today, which I consider a victory. The past six days I was only doing about 10oz of water and I couldn't even stomach an ounce of Premier Protein. Green tea helped and so did clear broth. I know it couldn't go down bc my stomach was swollen, I feel significantly less swollen today since my surgery. You're definitely okay, just a little swollen right now. I wouldn't worry to much and don't push yourself too hard. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

sleeve or rny, some thoughts/questions
Katie Loesch-Meyer replied to Katie Loesch-Meyer's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks, I tend to overreasearch, if anything, lol. In fact, whenever a family member needs research done, they just ask me to do it. It's my super power And yes, we did discuss that I could always convert to RNY later. In fact, one of the reasons he likes sleeve over RNY in general is there are more options down the road. Not as many things to do if an RNY doesn't work out, for whatever reason. It's just hard, not knowing what is best. Recovery of an RNY sounds longer too, and I have young kids to take care of. My teen son and mom will help, but the sooner I can be lifting, etc the better. Not sure if that is only my perception, or fact, as far as recovery time. -
sleeve or rny, some thoughts/questions
sarahbeth3569 replied to Katie Loesch-Meyer's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you already have the GERD I would strongly suggest going with the Bypass. There is a chance after the hernia is fixed that it would resolve itself...and I took that chance. While other's experiences might be better than mine, and a lot of peoples GERD does resolve 5-6+ months post-op, those first couple of months are hard (hell...fire burning hell) . I'm in the process of converting to bypass at less than a month post-op. And while I'm ready to be over this GERD, I'm dreading another recovery and re-opening incisions. I think it would be much easier if I was a lot further post -op and my body was more healed so if your surgeon is willing to convert you post-op then maybe sleeve is still an option. ? Good luck with whatever decision you make. -
Hi everyone I'm almost 5 weeks out I got my sleeve on 2/1 and everything's been running smooth but for the past week I throw up with any protein shake and I've been having a hard time meeting my protein and fluids goals because I'm always so nauseous. Has anyone gone through this? Also this started one day when I had puréed chicken and I'm guessing I ate too fast so I threw up, but now I throw up everyday regardless of how slow I eat I've been regressing back to even thinner puréed foods I'm supposed start incorporating regular soft foods next week but I don't feel quite ready.

Weight loss post op
LosingWeightLiz replied to Zoumommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't hit this stage yet, I just had my surgery 2 weeks ago. but from what Ive read on here, even though its different for everyone, around 3-4 weeks. I think when you start introducing food into your diet. maintain high water and protein, and that helps maintain a continuous loss, even if it isn't as extreme as you are use to now. -
Raise your hand if you have/had a low-carb (not liquid) pre-op diet
cruzn replied to incolorado's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My MDs diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery include: 10 oz lean protein/day 2 servings of fruit 2+ servings vegetables at least 64 oz water/day no grains at all and no Protein suplements before. -
Lita, How are you doing? I am feeling fine...pretty much back to normal. I don't have runs and very little gas anymore. I was advanced to Stage 3 on Thursday and on the following week I was told to go to Stage 4. I did cheat a bit today and had Spanish food but not a lot. I had a meat and cheese empanada and 1 spoon of rice and Beans and a bite of chicken. It was soooooo good but I don't want to start doing that on the regular. The gas will be a problem for you for about a week and then it just goes. I do find I need to eat every 2 hours or so or my stomach will roar like never before. I have Cream of Wheat for breakfast, yogurt for snack, a smoothie or 1/2 c of soup for lunch, an Optifast for mid afternoon snack, and some Protein, veggies for dinner. I always end the day with a popsickle, applesauce, or Jello. My biggest problem is trying to drink 8oz in an hour. I know I need the Fluid but I just forget. I do get full quick but am not losing right now...think I am stagnant. I have been released for exercise so next week its off to the gym. My mini-goal is to lost another 7 pounds by time I go back to the doctor for my first fill on 5/16. Wish me luck!!! I sent you a private message with my email and messenger info...look forward to hearing from you soon.

My surgery is scheduled for June 4th. I'm just waiting for flight and hotel confirmations (which I should receive tomorrow). I'm so looking forward to this. I have read The Big Book on Lap-Band and feel pretty prepared. The pre-op diet has been going well. Mainly an experiment of trying the recommended protein shakes until I find the ones I like. I have them narrowed down. I've cleaned out my kitchen and feel like I'll be ready to return to Atlanta from Dallas with the clear liquids I need for success. I am on quite a few allergy meds, but once I find alternate solutions for taking those larger pills I feel pretty prepared. Any advice for success would be greatly appreciated! Anyone close to their surgery date also?

SpaceDust replied to tpietrowski's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For protein I'm going to keep the unflavored protein on hand in the hopes that I can at least boost the protein in yogurt or soup if needed. -
What is everyone eating? I'm lucky to reach protein and not enough water intake. I've been try a 4oz Greek yogurt for breakfast, then soup or some 1/2 wrap and finally chicken for dinner. I'm not hungry or thirsty.... Looking for help.

Post op Appointment
sweetie716 replied to savedbysleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They asked me how much Protein, Fluid, and exercise I was getting. Most of my incisions were glued, but I did have staples out of one site. They took my vitals, asked if I had any trouble pooping, and just kind of went through the things that people probably most commonly have trouble with post-op. They also helped me with what I needed out of my post-op Vitamin regimen so I could get all that stuff while I was there. I was expecting bloodwork, but they didn't run anything. They asked if I had any questions, said everything looked good and that was about it. I hope your appointment goes great! -
Freed From Pre- Op Diet! No More Shakes!
Greekie17 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went for my pre-op weigh in today- I had to lose 4 lbs and I lost 12! So happy! I was on the 2 shakes/1 small protein & veggies meal but the shakes gave me (sorry, this is gross) diarrhea, so I only had 1 per day, and substituted an egg white omelet w 1 slice ff cheese, 2 c. lettuce & 1 TBSP fat free dressing. They told me today I could go back on 1200 cals./day up till surgery. That's next Wednesday, Feb. 8th. Of course I am not planning to put any weight back on. But, I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Today I had 4 oz NY strip, 1 c whole wheat angel hair pasta w sauteed mushrooms. I feel full and GREAT! The surgeon said I could! Yay!!!!!!!! -
gaining weight on soft foods
brittanylau replied to lkingglassalice's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was like this from the beginning of my 3rd week until a couple days when I got into my 6th week! It's super frustrating but it's just a dreaded stall I realized everyone hits. But I can assure you it's Water weight, you have to eat ALOT more than you're able to right now to gain 2 lbs of fat. So no worries, just stick to your plan, get in your Protein and liquids and eventually it will fall off. Trust me, I know how frustrating it can be to see you're doing nothing wrong! But it's just your body adjusting to the major weightloss. Good luck!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I cannot get enough watermelon. Like three ounces at one time. Is this good or bad for me. I am still eating my three ounces of Protein enough, but I crave watermelon. Any suggestions as to why?
