    Mushy stage and struggling

I was in the same boat as you until about 5 weeks out.. I would try and eat thick or solid stuff even chewed to liquid and it just felt stuck!! I was so discouraged and felt defeated!! My first meal on mushies, I made chicken salad with canned chicken and it was stuck in my throat for 3 hours!! I was so upset. Then I tried and egg, same thing. Then cottage cheese, same thing! I thought I would never eat again! I was forced to drink Slim Fast Low Carb for a few weeks to get calories in because I couldn't get any nutrients from food and I HATE protein drinks! I finally have found one that I can handle, but then I couldn't!! Then about week 5 or so, it is like the swelling left. I tried some salmon and it just went down fine. I ate tri-tip the next day and it was fine, an egg, no problem! Some just take a longer time than others. I never had an issue with liquids, just solids. You will get there too! Just be patient. Get some Wendy's chili. That works well and is satisfying. Creamed soups, Foster Farms meatballs with some gravy pureed are sooo good too! Patients my friend. Once a week try something thicker and see how it goes, if not, go back and then try it next week! Good luck! Kelly

    RESULTS FROM UPPING CALORIES

No magical potions, this is trial and error. If you are not losing weight then you are consuming too many calories and/or not excersicing enough to burn calories - it is that simple and yet that hard. It is not easy to find the happy place on the calorie intake and output for a body. I too am hypothyroidic and have a very low metabolism, so i have to eat much less than most people and exercise more (which i hate). We are all different and you have to find what works for you and that takes time, planning and lots of trials. WLS is a tool not the complete answer, you still have choices and free will to do or not to do what your body needs. Best wishes in your quest.

    Help?

Blerdgirl's suggestion looks do-able. I like Mexican food but did not know what an empanada was, so I had to go to images to see. Looks like it has a fried dough around it maybe even corn, depending on ingredients. At 3 1/2 weeks your new tummy is not healed enough to process that stuff, and you really don't have the calorie real estate to be getting your limited calories from stuff like that. The reason your tummy hurts now is because it is the boss of you, and you have to pay attention to what it's telling you. If I eat something Miss Tummy does not like, she either gives it back or makes me miserable for at least four hours. Indiscretions are hard lessons to learn, but easy to remember the unpleasantness it brings. This is not the last time that your taste buds will try to overule your brain. Go for the substitute like Blerdgirl mentioned, and stay strong. You may not have done damage this time, but if you talk to anyone who has had a leak or complications and they will tell you to respect your new tummy and give it time to heal. Recovery is hard because we have soooooo many adjustments to make. Therapy is not a bad word.

    Menu Plans & Ideas

I track everything on MyFitnessPal and have lots of MFP friends who do the same. My diary is open to friends. I suggest you get an MFP account, acquire friends who are post-wls, and peek in at their diaries to get ideas and inspiration. How much you eat, how often, calories, protein, etc. will vary a lot depending on what stage you are and what your doctor's guidelines are. When I was at your stage, my rules were: --no more than 800 calories per day --minimum 75 grams of protein per day --maximum 60 grams of carbs per day --3 meals per day, no more than 3 ounces of food per meal --no snacks other than calorie-free liquids and protein shakes --no grains, no sweets, no high-carb veggies such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, or corn (which is actually a grain anyway, not a veggie). Within those rules, I could play around as much as I wanted. Typically I had something like Greek yogurt + berries for breakfast, diced chicken breast with green veggies for lunch, tuna salad & a poached egg for dinner, + 2 protein shakes.

    Feeling Down :(

First of all is it that time of the month or coming in close? How often are you weighing yourself, if it is daily you will see a fluctuation. I have gotten into the trap of weighing daily and it will make you obsess, so if so then stop it! I gained right before my last appt I gained 3 lbs, which kinda irritated me! I come back and then it started to even out some and dropping back off. I had been in a situation where I got dehydrated and was sweating and I just seemed to poof up. The following week I made sure to drink lots of Water. Make sure you are eating enough calories too, if you go too low your body might hold onto everything. After the above situation I also bumped up the calories for a day and it seemed to help. So don't give up since you will have fluctuations. Good luck

  7. I had surgery one week ago (6/6/19). Im not losing a lot of weight. I’m consuming about 400 calories a day. I’m wondering if this is enough! Is it possible my body has gone into some sort of starvation mode and is storing fat? How many calories should I be consuming?

    Am I alone???

I wouldn't say you are alone - many believe that the lapband itself will do all the work. Unfortunately, I believe you were either misinformed and not properly educated by those who gave you the band. Having the lapband does mean you have to follow a diet and the band will give you the ability to do so more easily and effectively. If you do not eat properly and in proper quantities there is no way you will lose. The theory remains the same about calorie in, calorie out. You have to eat properly and exercise with the band to lose and maintain. What happens at first is the you eat the smaller quantities or better foods and lose. As time goes on, we all start slipping back into old habits and the weight will come back on - just as in our old dieting ways. Our body adjusts to the lower calorie intake and once we start eating the bad foods again, we gain. Then the snowball affect hits and we get discouraged and give up. But the good news is that you still have the band and with proper nutritional advice from your doctor and nutritionist and with a proper fill you can get back on the wagon and start over. It wasn't a waste of your time and the band can work for you - don't give up hope. Just consider a bump in the road and go around it. Talk with your doctor and tell him whats going on and ask for his help. If you don't get it from the surgeon, talk with your primary care physician and get direction. We all have to eat right and exercise and we need guidance on the right choices. Good luck!!!
  9. Okay so tomorrow I go on puréed foods and my biggest fear is since I will be eating actual food with carbs and calories (not clear liquid) is that I will gain weight. I'm on day 6 and I have lost 18 lbs since I left the hospital! I'm shocked too! Anyone else feels this way or have advice?

3 months post op and stalled

Tracking intake keeps me way more accountable than weighing ever did--I set it so my friends can look at my food diary but you can keep it private on MFP. Once you get into the habit, it will make all those little calories throughout the day really add up and you can get an honest picture of what you are eating. It is a tool just like the scale and just like our surgeries...we have years of bad habits to overcome and years of denial to face and that is daunting. One step at a time, one day at a time and never be afraid to dust yourself off and get back up on the horse-he isn't doing anything but waiting for you to get back on and ride

3 months post op and stalled

it just scares me that I know I should not be snacking in between my meals and I am probably getting too many calories in. I need to start tracking them.

    Post-op Exercise

Geoff, Had to do a double take on your surgery date. It looks like 10/2013. I assume you mean 10/13/2014. As the others have said. First off, follow your surgeons guidelines. That being said, I have been going to the gym and doing cardio and complete weight regimens since 6 weeks PO. And I'm sure that without the workouts, this whole sleeve thing would not be working for me. Some cautions. - I had a unbilical hernia repair during my sleeve and subsequently avoided any strenuous stomach type exercises for a few months. And when doing workouts, keep the hydration up. Another point to keep in mind is to be able to build any muscle during the process and certainly avoid losing any while losing fat weight, you must get in your Protein. I do whatever is necessary to get in at least 100 grams of protein a day. At six months my weight loss has slowed alot, but my workouts have not. As I get stronger, I am able to do more and even with the low calorie diet, I need to maintain the workouts in order to keep losing weight to reach my goal. The process has convinced me that even when I reach my goal, exercise will be the only way of maintaining my weight and avoiding any weight gain. Good luck with your surgery. Keep us posted with your progress. FYI - Check into "My Fitness Pal". Makes it easy to keep track of your diet, your workouts and your weight goals.

    Post-op Exercise

Hi @Geoff - your doctor will clear you when it is medically appropriate for you to return to exercise. Right after surgery- likely a few hours after, your doctor will have you up and walking around. This is to help prevent blood clots, pneumonia, and to move the air around that will be in your gut (read: gas). I started walking daily after surgery to just get moving. However, I waited the 2 1/2 months (as my surgeon suggested) before I started any weights or any ab/core activity. Once you are cleared to exercise - make sure you are doing what you enjoy. Cardio is a great place to start. Walking, elliptical, biking, swimming etc. Start by doing a little each day. Then each week - add a little more time or distance. Weight training will be key to help tone areas that will be troublesome once you start losing all of this weight. Weight training will also help you burn more calories longer than cardio. Be patient with yourself as you build strength and endurance. Best of luck to you!!

    Increase in appetite

cindy4157, my surgeon's office told me to strive for a calorie goal of 1100 calories. I'm just over 4 months out and not quite there yet, but getting close and I'm still losing weight, obviously not as rapidly as at first, but I'm not exercising consistently yet either. And my energy level is much better than it was when I was around 800 calories.

Oh, I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I wasn't going to cut calories also lol. I plan on reducing my calorie intake to 1,100-1,250 a day. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Eating too much before first fill

I think everyone's answers are great! It gives us different views and opinions on what works best for each one of us and what we can share and take away from it. I believe fully believe in making healthy choices but at the same time I want some enjoyment out of it. This weekend I found out I can have shrimp, pulled pork, veggies, etc in moderation and cooked to where it tasted great, lots of flavor. Being a black southern soul food cooking gal, I am now finding ways to enjoy soul food and other dishes with half the calories, fat, and what not. My main problem is grain type dishes especially anything that is made of flour. This is my weakness. But after reading some other threads and reading different recipes from low carb and regular recipes from different websites, I've concluded we can enjoy food with alterations done to best serve our physical and mental needs. Thanks again for everyone's opinions! I think this is great!
  17. No comorbs so I had to self pay...but I got my band so I would live long enough to be elderly! I guess if I needed more calories when I'm old they just unfil it..not really sure what you are asking?
  18. Depending on what you are supposed to do post-op and for how long determines what you should do next. I felt like I was starving on day 3 post-op. I kept trying to do the Protein shakes but I couldn't deal with the sweetness of mine anymore. Only being able to have either sweet or salty was driving me nuts. I started on soft foods early. I made an omelet from 2 large eggs, some fat free milk, and 1 slice of cheese. I ate it VERY slowly to make sure I could eat it at all. It went down fine. So I kept eating the omelet. After I had 1/2 of it, I was able to throw it away. (Proudest moment ever!). I slowly started to eat soft, mushy foods the rest of the week. Mostly I have a 1 egg omelet and that's it for Breakfast. Tuna or chicken salad for lunch. Chicken, ground beef, ground turkey for dinner. I keep soft foods in the house and stick with those that have lots of protein. I go for my first fill on Thursday and I'm practically eating normally now. If I find that I'm still hungry, I try to figure out if it's head hunger or real hunger. At the suggestion of someone else from here today, I started a myfitnesspal account to track my food. The thing to remember is, that site (from what I've seen so far) does not factor in that you have a band so your food level is restricted. I was shocked that according to the site that I am not eating anywhere near enough in a day. I'm not even hitting the minimum of 1200 calories. Myfitnesspal will help you track your calories and your protein. Bonus tip: DO NOT EAT FRUITS WITH SKINS! They do not digest and could cause more harm than good. Making healthier choices is what all this is about. Concentrate on that and every time you have to eat, make the best choice you can. You will have moments where you slip up, recognize that you slipped up and what you can do about it in the future. Also, listen to your doc. If you are comfortable with trying soft foods early, stick with stuff that is protein packed. It will help you stay fuller longer, help you heal faster, and will help you feel included. Try to keep down to the appropriate portion size too. Best of luck to you.

    Losing focus HELP

Elda you are not alone. Here I am waving my hand. I am 5 months out and I do the same thing. My restriction is off and on and whenever it feels like being there. No matter what we still have to eat right and exercise. I'm sorry you are going through so much and this time of the year always intensifies the negative things in our lives. When I go through this type of thing I go on a soup kick. I keep soup on hand so I am not eating a lot of stupid calories. Also, cool whip with a little frozen or fresh fuit or sugar free popsicles. Good Luck Elda, I know many of us will have you in our prayers.

    Need a little support....

You know, Jls_27 - you and I are in incredibly similar situations. I am 27 years old, started out at 321 lbs and am down to 180- I was banded April 11, 2008. I am also at a point where I have started making some pretty crappy decisions about what I eat. It seems chocolate has been re-introduced into my life lately and eating out has become more common. This past week I’ve been working incredibly hard to not eat out for dinner or lunch and to make sure I get my exercise. Chocolate is still there, but the trigger-food chocolate (these excellent little milk-chocolate caramel thingies) has been replaced by plain dark chocolate. I don’t like dark chocolate at all but it works great for a chocolate-fix and is DEFINITELY not a trigger food. I’ve also been working to replace the simple-carbs with fruits. Grapes and Strawberries are in season- two of my favorite foods of all times. You may want to start readjusting your food choices one item at a time. Are you like me in that you love your sugar? Or are you more a loaded baked-potato type woman? Make it a point to keep trigger foods out of reach. Make sure you have healthy or at least minimally unhealthy substitutes that won’t result in a second or third helping. If you can cook, do it. If you can’t cook, eat things that you know will fill you up easily without too many calories. For me it’s chicken. I can eat about two oz of chicken and be completely full. Also- this is very important. Just because we’re getting close and close to goal doesn’tmean we can forget about our required Protein intake. Make sure you’re getting your protein J I have to remind myself of that every day- the stuff is gross LOL Good luck- Excellent work thus far!!!!

    upset

40 lbs is a good loss but most doctors will let you get to a 2 lbs loss a week before they. Get stingy with fills. Mine is tight with filling... Often I had to beg for them and several times I was denied because I had lost 8-10 lbs that month. Why not go into the office and have a good conversation with the dr... Tell him you got the band to have a tool and you believe with a fill it will be more effective. Not going isn't good.... That's how people get off track so try it one more time and be Prepared with every thing you are doing... So he knows you are doing your part like tracking food, portions, calories etc. Good luck

    Pregnacy Questions

Hi: I was banded in June 2001 and have gone through two pregnancies with the band. (I also started Pregnant Bandsters on Yahoo Groups.) I was unfilled for both pregnancies for a variety of reasons. 1) I wasn't eating enough with a fill to support a healthy pregnancy. The minimum calories recommended for a pregnant woman are in the 1800-2000 kcal range. 2) My surgeon, Dr. Rumbaut, who has banded well over 3000 patients (last time I checked, probably a much bigger number these days) recommended it. 3) It was the reason I chose the band. So I could be unfilled and then refilled after pregnancy. If you are suffering from nausea, I would definitely recommend unfilling as well as excessive vomiting can cause band slippage. Anyway, even though I was unfilled, I maintained a good % of my original weight loss through two pregnancies. I don't regret being unfilled at all and am thrilled that now that both of my boys have been born, and breastfed extensively (each exclusively for 6 months, and then breastfed with additional food for 1 year after that (2nd guy is still nursing), I'm ready to be refilled.

    New to the forum

I'm not from NC just a huge Tar Heel fan. I actually stay within 1500 calories I'm just not making the right food choices. My problem is I have 2 jobs and don't actually sit to eat meals. I'm always on the go. It just seems like the "bad" foods are easier when I'm always on the go. When I was first banded I avoided all breads because the dr told me to. Thanksgiving came around and I tried bread it's all downhill now. It seems like that's all I crave since I pretty much avoided it a whole year.
  24. RMAP has a pretty lenient diet protocol IMO, from what I've been reading on here. It's only half a day clear liquid before surgery (starting at 3pm) and by day 4 after they have you on stuff like light yogurt, cottage cheese, strained Soup, etc. By day 15 you can have soft moist foods. So yeah, it's gotta be the most "liberal" of the diets I've seen! (Including the 10 day preop diet. That's just a 1000 calorie diet with a Protein shake for Breakfast, lunch, and a Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice meal for dinner. So not bad at all!)
  25. My doctor told me to make sure I get at least 60g of protein/day but didn't put me on any range/goal of calories, fat, or carbs per day. I'm tracking my food on SparkPeople after years of tracking WW points, and it's interesting and eye-opening to see how the different nutritional values stack up. I entered a calorie range of 1000-1200 (because they wouldn't let me go as low as 900!) and that gave me a range of carbs and fats that I haven't come close to eating. The Protein is close to or over the 60g target but I have no idea if I should be sticking to very low carbs and/or fats. Can a banded tummy handle more, and do we NEED more for a balanced system? I'm confused!
