Getting an early start
almost_sleeved123 replied to almost_sleeved123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@AML32 Thanks for your help. My surgeon doesn't require one. It was something I researched on my own. Surgeon says high Protein low carb but no real guidelines. But I was nervous about doing just liquids after so I wanted to be more prepared than that. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Rash, reaction to the adhesive on the bandages. Happens a lot. A little CortAid on the rash (not on the incision itself) will help with the itch. And, it sounds like you are definitely not taking in enough Protein. Even if it's Protein shakes at this stage, you still need protein to assuage hunger.

Does anyone have a gluten issue?
Teachamy replied to LisaLou30's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was diagnosed with Celiac about 6 years ago. An upper-endoscopy can show if you have damage caused by Celiac. I would ask your doc to be specific about how he diagnosed your "sensitivity". It can show up on a blood test, but an upper endoscopy is typically done in this instance. You should continue to eat normally if you are planning to have an endoscopy. If you are moving to a gluten free diet, you must avoid wheat, barley, rye, and any oats not specifically labeled gluten free. As it is important to stay away from processed food anyway, I would highly recommend staying away from gluten-free processed foods. (Chips, crackers, pastas, etc.) Gluten free products are typically milled with rice flour. High calorie, high carb, a no-no for a health conscious eater. Eat fresh foods. And look for Protein supplements labeled gluten-free. I have found most of the shakes are gluten free. Hope this helps! -
Does anyone have a gluten issue?
amazon replied to LisaLou30's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As @@Teachamy mentioned, you're going to need to stay away from a bunch of things. But I'm betting you'll feel better! I transitioned to GF in April 2013. I did it to see if I'd feel better, because I have always had stomach issues, and the last few years a lot of joint pains, muscle aches, and headaches/migraines. Within a few days I felt so much better. I stuck with it for that reason. If I have gluten, I get ill now. I didn't test positive for celiac's. But gluten and I don't get along. Since I made this change over a year ago, I'd all ready made a lot of changes to my diet. Making staying away from breads, pasta's, etc. part of the norm even if GF. After WLS it's best to avoid these things anyway. Eating "clean" is the best approach IMO. I have also found that a vast majority of Protein shakes/powders are GF. But always double check. -

How much did you lose ?
MojoCAMI replied to MrsSantiago's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dropped 12lbs if I am not mistaken.. I was not on full liquids just reduced carb, sugar fat intake. I did protein shakes breakfast lunch and ate a small meal at dinner low in carb sugar and stuff, lots of jello for snack because I could not have my grapefruit -
Not really an option for me. I live in an area that is not very populated, so I have to drive a ways to the best hospitals and clinics. If the Cardiologist cancels one more time, I will find a new one.

These are good. they come in 3 flavors. They have 10 grams of Protein and 140 calories. I find them at Walmart pharmacy in the ensure section. Don't get them confused with the snack Special K bars. I really like them for on the go. They taste like they could be cousins to the rice crispie treats. tee hee edie:p Just make sure you get the ones that say 10 grams protein on front of box.

anyone following Eating for Life or Eat- Clean Diet?
losingitat41 posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doctor insists that we follow EAting for life and his patients have been very successful. we follow the Eat Clean diet as itis very similar- 5 small meals per day, lean protein, whole grains, veggies, fruits. The whole idea is to fuel your body with the right foods for weight loss, highly nutritious and packed with the right vitamins, proteins and minerals. When i get back on to foods, i willl be back on eating clean. (around 3 weeks post op) -
Controling Your SWEET TOOTH
Shannalee replied to coolnessa22's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost into my 6 week pre-op diet which is mostly protein drinks. What I have heard that helps with the sweet tooth is SF pop-cycles or SF jello. It's the one thing that you'll get to eat after the surgery so it might help before. What helps me is I use a little more Mio in my water. It makes it sweet and helps me with my craving. I have quit everything like you but the soda is the one thing that is difficult for me. Considering where I was 4 months ago I have quit a lot of things that are bad for me. Can't wait to hear how your pre-op appointment goes -
Too much liquid?
lsuchick4 replied to AbbeyRachael's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Restriction is much less with liquids. Once you start purées and real proteins, the restriction will be full force. -
Hello to all you brave souls :whoo:, My family doctor recommended Lap Band. Through research, visiting this forum, and finding the right surgeon I thought I was on my way. At the private seminar preparing me for surgery, they discussed the three options this surgeon completes. Here, I found that both the Lap Band and the Sleeve cost the same and my BMI and age make me easily eligible for both. They told me that after the healing process, Lap Band patients hunger spikes while Sleeve patients appetites remain diminished. Sleeve surgeries remove the part of the stomach that produce the majority the the hormones that elevate appetite:nervous? I really think Lab Band is the way to go for me, but am worried about appetite spikes and failure. I also worry about erosion, slippage and port problems. As well, with the Sleeve, I am very worried about leakage, and regaining the weight after the banana shaped stomach begins to stretch. I know that with the band, a fill could make all the difference if your weight begins to climb:confused:? Any encouragement, information, and support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Day 14. Halfway to Okay.
Day Dreamer replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ahh don't sell yourself short.. I say it sounds like your day 14 was closer to a B!! You seem to have a very good understanding of when and why you would eat - that has to be worth some points It sounds like you might need some options... have you tried the Syntrex protein nectars? PowerAde zero with protein powder? - anything to shake up the routine of just water... Keep up the good work and stay positive!! -
Welcome to LBT!! You are right this is a great site!! I have had any question I had answered, awesome support, and made very special friends. Yes, we have all changed our habits for short term success' before, only to regain our weight usually plus a few extra pounds as well. However as I am sure you have heard, this tool, the band, makes life so much easier!!! I am satisfied with less food, do not have the actual hunger as badly as I used to. I just feel a level of control I never had pre band. I have only had one fill, and I have minor restriction...I can still eat way more than I know I should, that is what I am trying to work on!!! I do have restriction tho, in the morning I am tighter, and have to be VERY careful with my bite size and how much I chew. I do not know how much you have to lose, and whether losing any over the 6 month program will cause you to be close to BMI requirements or not. I would do what the Dr. and ins. require, but also try to teach yourself to eat like a bandster. No liquids with your meal, wait an hour after to drink. Chew, chew, chew! Eat a balanced diet, but load your stomach with protein first, working to where the carbs/ sweets are the last things, and then when you are banded, you likely will not be able to fit them in!!! And in the meantime, hang out here, ask questions, learn all you can. Research everything! Go in well prepared! I was told to imagine you are making these decisions for your Mom, or sister, or daughter....because YOU are just as important to them as they are to you, and they want you to make the best choices! If there is anything I can answer for you I would be glad to...most everyone will be! Good Luck to you...the 6 months will pass quickly! Kat

Found new protein.....
ppressey24 replied to ppressey24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered the pure. It has no taste so i basically wanted it to add in other things to get the extra Protein. Now i was doing infusions for my chronic fatigue syndrome, ms, and my arthritis. But it didnt help but for a couple of days. I read where tumeric in the natural root or the Vitamin helps so i started with the vitamin, and thats all ive had now in 6 months. Im only 1 week post op and i no longer need that total replacement that i was looking at in april. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App -
My surgeon had me on up to 800/day until I was on solid food. Then my calorie intake was increased to 1,000. I have to be careful of my carb count. Try to stay under 50 carbs/day. I keep a food diary & this has helped. And my proteins are 60+/day. I found to many carbs slows down my weight loss. Good luck with your journey.

Thanks all! I do track on MFP. Since I posted this I'm thinking that some of my meals may not be high enough protein, causing me to feel hungry sooner perhaps. I will try cutting back a bit and see how that goes - I think that will be much easier when I'm on solids... Great to see a couple of you mention 800 cals! I've just needed to know that I'm in the right neighborhood!

I am almost where you are. I completed all my requirements last week, but am waiting for my Dr. to receive my psych evaluation so they can submit to insurance for approval. I am hoping to get approval very soon so I can get a surgery date. I am nervous about the pre-op diet too. I will have to do 1 week of clear liquids+ protein shakes. Then after surgery my surgeon has the first meal be clear liquids then switches you to full liquids for 2 weeks. Since there full liquids includes cream of wheat and low fat yogurt I think I will be fine on that.
-
listen to your trainer. you are burning fuel and then you have none left essentially. try some greek yogurt before a workout or a smoothie. you work out more, you burn more, you eat more. you will lose more inches than lbs, there is an almost 2 month "lag time" from inches lost to lbs lost. but it will catch up. i have been told and read that eating more protein will help you lose the weight as it builds muscle.

Surgery 8/15- Feeling Pretty Good!
jessfharris posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
JUST A LIL PAIN BUT NOT AS BAD AS I WAS THINKING! Im on full liquids and im drinking Isopure Protein drinks and Water - I was given pain meds and nausea meds too. So I'm doing great! I get lil chest pains here and there but they only last a few seconds, any of u get that post op? Is it normal? My starting weight was 347 (highest) and preop diet on my day of surgery 332 and 2 days post op 328.0 - wow !! I'm loving my sleeve !! -
I eat a lot of veges, I love my meat, but it is still possible to get in all your protein and vitamins in with a band. I think most vegetarian food is band friends other than noodles and rice, some bandsters have problems with those.

The only hormone that gets removed partially is the one that causes the feeling of hunger. Cravings are a mental thing. The surgery won't take those a way. The hunger will return as well, for some, the further you out from surgery. The best thing you can do to beat the cravings is eat your dense proteins and eat 5-6 small meals a day. Drink plenty of fluids and exercise. It will take some time for the cravings to get under control.
