    banded Oct. 3,2007

Chase, I went for my first fill on November 16 but when the surgeon asked if I'd been hungry, looking for food, I really didn't think so. So my first fill was 1/2 cc. My second was scheduled for December 28, but I've already changed it back to December 21st. I too gained a pound (1.4 # to be exact!) over Thanksgiving and I NEED that restriction over the Christmas holiday! I too find that I am more hungry but limit my intake--I often wonder if it's just "head hunger" or real stomach hunger! I just try to drink more in between meals. Good to find someone banded around my time with the same issues...:girl_hug:
  2. I completely agree. Its sad that weight loss companies only look at the negative sides of weight loss surgery. The band is a great alternative to gastric bypass. Good luck.
  3. Are you going to have some stuffing tomorrow? My dietician said I can just wondering if anyone else is.

    Miserable

Yes, I had bypass. I cannot say that I don't recommend it, stories are diff for everyone. I'm just at the point where I wish that I didn't do it. I hope I feel different soon. I can't eat, hardly drink, how do you survive like that. Thank you for the well wishes. converted from Lap-Band to RNY 10/2/12
  5. Im scheduled for a bypass a week and change from now. But im strongly reconsidering. My one surgeon is adamant the bypass is the best option. His partner (off the record) told me no way should I do it. Safe to say im extremely conflicted but i really dont wanna do the bypass Im basically stuck between 3 less than optimal options (including doing nothing)

    Somethings never change...

Why is it that when you are feeling good and have a lot of hope that people kick you in the knees? My surgery was on 7/28 and I have lost 36lbs already! That is great! I ran into an old co-worker/friend today and in our conversation I shared with her that I had LAP-BAND® surgery. She of course immediately told me I should have opted for gastric bypass because the people she knows that have had LAP-BAND® were not successful... So I walk away from the conversation feeling panicked that I made the wrong choice and that I will not be successful. I can't seem to shake my doubts today... This blog really sounds pathetic but I needed to vent.
  7. KittyKat, My appointments went really well today. In fact much better and I am feeling less nervous. I had many questions and received the answers candidly. First off I found that I have a mild haitial hernia, which my surgeon will repair if it is noticable. He said it is not critical, but if is not repaired it could potentially get bigger, but can always be fixed later. If it is noticable he said might as well tackle it while he is in there. I am getting the Realize-C band. My surgeon says it is the way to go. I trust him with his decision on this one. I do not have to have a liquid diet, just all clear liquids for Tuesday before the surgery, so pretty much Monday night at midnight is the last time I can have anything other than the "Clear liquids" My surgery is scheduled for 1pm, I am to arrive and be admitted at 11am. If there are delays my family could be waiting for up to 4-5 hours for word, but the surgery will only take 60-90 minutes if everything goes well. I went to OR lab and had my pre lab testing. The OR nurse asks me right off "why did you decide to get gastric banding over RnY surgery (bypass). I told her I had problems with portion control and I felt this would be the best surgery for me. She was shocked and said this is the first time a patient said that to her and she had RnY 5 years ago. She is sooooo petite and showed me her pictures from when she was heavy and she was my size a little shorter but 275lbs. She was soooo cool, and she is much older. She told me at the time she elected surgery, she didnt think she had a portion control problem, but that she ate the wrong foods and too many sweets. After surgery she slowly realized that portion control was her biggest problem. I think she was hinting that the gastric band may have been the better surgery for her without saying it. I have more details but it's late and I have been rambling! Keep me updtated with your progress too!!!! Your band-day buddie - Tricia
  8. Fingers crossed you get your bypass soon. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that your sleeve was shaped in some strange way that made it extra bad for you. It's terrible that you've had to live with it so bad for so long!

    Flustered

Hi and welcome. I chose the band because there is no major cutting of the insides and it can be removed if need be. You lose weight slower at a real nice pace and you can control everything. I know of about 6-10 people who had the bypass and they gained back and then some. The band and every other WLS is a tool and you have to learn to control the tool and want it to work for you. I had the band in July at almost 62 and it is the best thing I ever did for me. The weight comes off slower but I am happy with that. I gained the weight over many years so I can wait. I would recommend the band to any one who wants to try WLS for their health and longer life. Good luck with your choice.
  10. Hi! Im still waiting on my approval but I have another question. I know I need breast reduction surgery also. Has anyone have heard of them doing that at the same time as the gastric bypass or do they make u wait til goal weight? Sent from my SM-N920R6 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. AGREED. I had revision to bypass on 9.04. You have to get the protein into your body. Shakes, scoops in water....whatever it takes. When you do that you will feel better.....
  12. Sorry, I'm not local. I hope you can find a local support group or mentor. Keep in mind that if you do find a general WLS support group, band patients have very different experiences that bypass patients. You can't compare your weight loss to theirs. We achieve about the same results at year 3 and beyond, but they lose much faster at first and have very different issues (sorry if u know this already). You can use those of us on these boards who've been banded years ago for on-line support. Studies show that people who actively track their progress and use on-line support achieve better results than not actively involved in some form of support program.
  13. My surgery was last Monday, November 9. I have had no complications, but I feel so weak. I'm in the mushy stage and I just don't want to eat too much. But I can't be getting in more than 400 calories a day. This is making me edgy and uncomfortable. What I would give for a slice of pizza! Is this normal (the no energy part, not the pizza part)? Soft solids seem like an eternity away!
  14. I am from alberta too!! I think we chatted b4, we have the same surgon too... I didn't go through insurance cause I didn't want to deal with the hoopla... I hope you get some of the costs covered! When is your date?? I am November 30th!!
  15. Had my mind made up that I wanted to get banded. I went to seminar last month and noticed that the surgeon was pushing the gastric bypass. He kept saying that banding is a thing of the past and I will only lose about half of the weight that I want to lose. He suggested over and over and over again that by pass was the way to go. I need everyones comments!!! I really dont want the bypass... too risky with my life and a huge nutrition factor involved with that. Has anyone else heard of this? I insisted on the banding and now am ready to move on to the next step, which I think is the phsych eval... shouldnt have any problems there. Ive been married for 21 years, if Im not crazy by now... I think I will be okay. lol
  16. O.K I haven't posted in a while because everything was going pretty good. Today I have feelings I haven't had since I started this process. I am 46 pounds down after having surgery mid November and feel like I have done fairly well with all the changes, but today I just had the feeling like what have I done. I feel like I can't eat anything I want. Mentally, I still want to eat, but I just can't like I used to. I thought I would feel like this before now. I just want to cry. I feel really tight after my last fill, putting me at 5.5 cc's. I have a constant feeling like I have a pulled muscle in my left side. I don't know I just feel like screaming. I am only about half way and don't want to get discouraged now. I just needed to vent. Has anyone else felt this way?:Banane20:

    Lap Band And Cruising

I went on a cruise in November. This was before my first fill. I had little to no restriction and I ate 3 meals a day but I did drink more than usual. I gained about 3 lbs after the week. And it came off quickly. Have a great time on your cruise!

    starting the process

I am starting the process myself. Tried to last year. Insurance would not cover it, but I knew with the Company merger we would be getting a better package. Just sent an inquiry to the Insurance compnay last week. My father felt the same way. Very concerned about the surgery. The problem is he knew of 2 friends that had pretty serious complications with Gastric Bypass. I educated him on some information on the lap band and that really seemed to help. You may ask your family to log in on this web site to hear all of the sucess stories too. Most people are fearful of the unknown. Give them some references so they know it will be the best thing for you. I know when those results start kicking in, they will be so proud of you. Stick to you guns my dear. All will be wonderful!:clap2: Sincerely, Heather

    HELP failed surgery

Can you consider bypass surgery instead?
  21. The band didn't perform up to advertised / reported specs. Ended up with some minor issues and struggled to keep the weight off. Revised to Bypass, dropped the rest of my weight and have kept it off for over a year now. Coming up on 2 years post revision in March.
  22. Hi everyone...once again I am here looking for support! Good thing you are all here! Well, like momma always said, "careful what you wish for...cause you just might get it!!" Well, I was hoping for a quick date when I met with my surgeon and I got it!! June 14th... two weeks from Monday! I sort of freaked out inside! Guessing that is normal... but what was weird for me was that my Doctor actually tried to talk me out of the band!!! Ok, so I have Gerd (gastric reflux) and a bad back (two back surgeries). She said... "you know.. the band might not help your Gerd and you may not be successful at all if you don't exercise 1 hour a day... so you might want to reconsider. I looked her in the eye and said... "So I guess I'm going to have to exercise an hour a day!" She also said I might not like it. I said... we'll we'll just give it a whirl and if I don't... you'll take it out. She actually smiled. Oh well...I'm a nurse and have worked with surgeons my whole life... just have to work around them I guess. Then I asked her about band erosion, slipping and vomiting, as I fear vomiting and having complications, i.e slippage/erosion etc. she said, "What are you a vomiter?" Since when did THAT become a noun I wondered. I am not a "vomiter," so I "guess" I'm ok! I heard she encouraged questions... but she didn't seem to like mine. At one point she said... "I'm not going to be your PCP!!" I said "fair enough." She is known for being a superb surgeon, and I'm ok with her crankiness... but this push for Gastric bypass is really creeping me out! Next she said, "Fluids for a month you know." I said, yes, I'm aware. She asked if I could do that. I said... it's not Cancer, not a life sentence of illness or fluids, it's a month... I can do most anything for a month. She smiled a little and said... ok, let's book you. I wanted to hear from her that I'd be successful! That the band was going to be a good tool, etc... instead I felt like I brow beat her into doing it!!! NOT what I expected today. Any thoughts my friends? Thanks, Tracy
  23. Hello I would suggest that you go with what surgery is best for you - not let your schooling decide for you! School can be postponed, your health cannot! However, that being said, I would say that in your situation, a band would be better as there's less healing to go through. Remember that with a Bypass you'll have had major major surgery, spent some time in Intensive Care and been pretty poorly. With a band there is not a single change to your anatomy, and to be honest, after 10 days I was feeling more or less back to normal. The "lack of food thing" you speak about - I feel no different - no ligtheadedness etc. I've had my 2nd fill and I'm still not at my sweet spot yet, but I'm getting there and am losing weight slowly. To those that don't know i've had the band, my diet is working well!!!! After the band the pain was completely tolerable - only 2 or 3 days of taking pain killers, and then rest for a few days. after 10 days I was out walking 3 miles a day and enjoying the rest of my time off work (My GP signed me off work for 3 weeks!!!!! - totally unecessary!)
  24. I was banded may 2013. My first year went like textbook. i lost a total of 81 lbs and felt great. But than problems started and july of 2014 my band was emptied and stayed empty for a year. My surgeon didn't want to put any fill in do to the complications i had. We discussed revision and on july 31,2015 i was revised to a gastric bypass. Surgery was difficult due to adhesions and scar tissue. When the band was placed i had gone to surgery to have a bypass but that surgeon couldn't do it do to the scarring. When i was in the recovery room the first words out of my mouth were ,what type of surgery? if he couldnt do the bypass i signed papers for a sleeve. but he was successful. I was so happy. post surgery i have had no complications. Have lost 27 lbs in 26 days. and am doing well with my new way of eating.

    Surgeries after getting your band

I was placed on a medication to prevent gallstones for 6 months after my band surgery. There have actually been several studies about bypass and band surgeries and gallstones. Here are links to just a few. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16687027 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1858735 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14578732 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12677265 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11792152
