2 Weeks Post Insertion Need Advice Please
Arabesque replied to Kez6670's topic in Gastric Balloon Forum
Balloon, much like lap band, is not very common these days so you may not get many responses to your query from people with a balloon. Unlike weight loss surgeries, the balloon won’t stop your hunger. It just makes you feel full more quickly as it takes up space in your tummy. But even with weight loss surgery, your hunger does come back so we all have to examine our motivations for eating, discover the difference between head and real hunger, change our relationship with food, etc. For example, could your hunger be head hunger? That is, is your hunger coming from you (consciously or subconsciously) looking to sooth/comfort yourself because of the emotional roller coaster and stress you’re likely feeling from having the balloon inserted and the changes you are having to make. This is very common occurrence. But yes, contact your doctor to ensure everything is working as it should. May be enquire about seeking some counselling to support you through the head work aspect of weight loss. Many find it very helpful. PS - Out of curiosity why did you go down the path of having a balloon inserted versus a sleeve or bypass or one of the other weight loss surgeries? Was it because the balloon can be removed whist the other surgeries are pretty much irreversible? -
Welcome PlantMom! There's already some really good advice here on your query. If you can spend some time reading this forum generally you will gain SO much knowledge in a short time. Well worth it. I'm 3 years post sleeve. It has suited me very well - I am 5'9" and was 276lbs before I started my WLS journey, so not that far off your stats. I made a positive choice to have the sleeve based on minimum changes to my anatomy. My surgeon laid out the pros of that Vs the bypass (he only did those two ops) and I decided. I would be really concerned about anyone trying to shoehorn me into what was easier for them. I did have reflux when I was morbidly obese but I lucked out and it actually improved after I lost weight (as it always had before) but if you're a fellow sufferer that might be one to consider carefully. In IRL I know people with sleeve, bypass, AND band, who have failed to lose, or lost and regained everything and more. WLS is a chance to re-think and redefine your relationship with food. I am saying this as someone still doing that and who will be negotiating that forever! It's a lifelong journey for those of us who were born with the propensity to gain gain gain weight in the obesogenic society we now live in. Choose your tool carefully and after as much research as you can. Even then it doesn't work out for everyone but I think it maxes out your chance that you'll be one of the lucky ones. I wish you all the best.

Brown Rice protein powder - can anything be done with it?
JennyBeez posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Does anyone use brown rice protein powder, specifically the unflavoured & unsweetened variety? I bought a small sample from my local bulk health food store, along with a larger amount of pea protein powder. I knew what to expect from the pea protein powder as I've had it before in years past, but I was unprepared for the smell, taste, aftertaste and immense chalky-ness of the brown rice powder. I've tried it in a few different things now (oatmeal, shakes and smoothies), and most of them had to be pitched entirely; I was able to choke down the smoothie I made with it but it was still unpleasant. Online blogs suggested almond milk and unsweetened cocoa powder to combat the chalky texture -- both did nothing for me. I tried PB powder, regular fairlife milk, thickening the smoothies with bananas or avocado, greek yogurt, etc. I still have a little under 500ml left, and I'm tempted to just give up and throw it away. It's one of those vicious thought cycles: I hate to waste food by throwing it away, but I hate to waste other foods by trying to combine them and getting the same result lol. If anyone has a method to using this while masking basically everything about it, I'm all ears. Can you bake with it? I've had mixed results baking with other protein powders in the past and am honestly mildly exhausted just thinking about it. XD (I apologize with harassing you all with my constant protein supplement queries. Egg protein was a miss for me, but pea protein is a morning-time lifesaver for me.) -
How confusing re your bloods! I have quarterly bloods taken which have some overlap with those requested by the Bariatric team. I queried this and all they did was take one lot of bloods, put all the results on the system and alert both requesting consultants. I certainly didn’t want 2 separate lots of blood being drawn that say the same thing 😬 Isn’t it annoying when either you do as they ask and they tell you off or they haven’t told you to do something but should have and then tell you off for not knowing?? At least it seems that you have a grip on things, are able to keep on doing what’s best for you knowing that things are moving forward for you. Well done on your success so far. I hope your stall breaks sooner rather than later!

I have read through so many posts on the topic of revision and see that people are mostly very happy to have gone through with it but a lot of them seem to be due to regain, hernias or bad GERD so my query is a bit different. My surgeon has mentioned a number of times to me about doing a revision from sleeve to bypass as following my surgery a year ago I had bad reflux. When I was released from hospital in November I was prescribed two pantomed (PPI) a day and since then GERD has become less frequent, for the last three months I am now on just one a day and I don't consider that the GERD impacts me, maybe once a week I might have a bit of gas, but the surgeon was still suggesting bypass and at my last appointment (in May) even mentioned that it would help me lose more weight, even though I was then just 5kg/11lb from the target he gave me and still only 10 months post-op. Given all the complications I had after my sleeve surgery in July last year I am very hesitant to have any further operations as I don't know if it was the medical teams fault and/or my body. If it is something that the surgeon says is needed I am torn between asking for a referral to another hospital or risking his team again in the belief that they would be extremely careful with me after everything that went wrong the year ago. So far, in just under 12 months, I have lost 47kg/103lb and am only 7kg/15lb away from my goal weight (3kg from the surgeon's target) and therefore I was wondering, from those who have gone through the revision process, if you think it is worth it? For me the only benefit I see is that I would be able to stop taking the daily pantomed, so not sure that is worth risking another surgery for. I have not had a single dumping episode and for the last few months have been able to tolerate all foods without issue so am a bit fearful that the bypass may lead to a backwards step on those fronts. If my GERD is not impacting me is there any other long-term benefit to the revision when I am still (slowly) losing weight? I don't want to go more than a few kg below my goal weight as it is not a good look on me. If there is no drastic weight loss, given so much has been achieved already, is there hair loss with the revision? Any insights would be appreciated as I have my one year check-up in a couple of weeks and I want to be prepared for when the topic is raised

8 months post, 3 months of stall and poor circulation
JennyBeez replied to Anomalia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for my care team and they have done a wonderful job for the most part in preparing me and responding to my post-op queries... but they've also missed things along the way that I think could've/should've been a simple thing to cover in one of the many pre-op lectures, booklets, etc -- or been wrong about 'minor' things (aka: "Take this specific multivitamin dosage/brand with your breakfast each day, and your SSRIs & BP meds, your b12, and your iron" when the multivitamin package explicitly says "DO NOT take this with iron because it inhibits iron absorption, wait until 2 hours afterwards to take any iron supplements") In other words, I think it's always in our best interest to do some research ourselves, ask around, and seek the opinions of other health professionals. My pharmacist, for example, always seems to know way more about drug & supplement interaction than any of my doctors who do the prescribing. -
Honestly this is the best place I've been ever. Nobody will judge you (well unless you need a complete reality check, LOL). There is so much knowledge and expertise and people are so willing to share. I would never have got to where I am now without these guys. Do you have a date or ballpark date for your surgery? So sensible to look at your eating habits well in advance. With respect to your original query - if you can eat soup then everything will be fine. 😍

Doctor Recs and Pricing in Los Angeles
The Greater Fool replied to maintenanceman's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I had my TT at UCLA, I forget the Doctor's name, it was too many years ago. So really, I'm not much help for your actual query. But, why I'm really here is to let people know that plastic surgery isn't always cosmetic. If you can document things like rashes, infections, and back pain with failed interventions, it becomes a medical condition rather than a cosmetic one. It becomes 'reconstructive surgery' which insurance often pays for. My TT didn't cost me a penny. Good luck, Tek -
I recently started supplementing my daily cardio with weight training - I am seeing a personal trainer now two mornings a week, I noticed in the personal trainer sessions I’m getting lightheaded. I don’t experience the same lightheadedness during intensive (Zone 4-5) swim or other cardio workouts. Im pretty confident this lightheadedness is an issue of properly fueling myself for a weight training workout. THE ASK: I’m looking for suggestions of what I can eat in the morning ahead of training to better fuel myself to prevent lightheadedness . Secondarily I’m also generally interested in what you all eat prior to workouts. - My current routine includes a Premier Protein and a protein2O energy at 75 mins and 30 mins before a workout as well as at least 8oz Water. - I’m 2 months post-sleeve and my nutrition plan at this stage allows only the following in addition to our protein: 1 serving of fruit and 2 servings of non-root vegetables. Additional background: Before you suggest the below I’m already aware of, actively monitoring, and confident these things are not to blame: - Im well rested -it’s rare I don’t hit 8.5hrs/night. - I’m getting easily over 72oz of hydration daily - I’m averaging between 80-100 protein/day. - I was active before my surgery and have worked with trainers and weight training extensively in the past - the work I’m doing is not new to me. For example in the year before surgery I’ve deadlifted over 250lbs. **** I’ve also reached out to my nutrition team with this query but was interested especially in hearing from anyone else who has experienced and overcame this.****

Food issues from one day to the next
Helen Bauzon replied to GwenG1960's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Guys There is certainly some clear explanations that can help you. It is quite an answer, t help I have developed a 20min master class video which will certainly answer your queries. The link is following https://helen-bauzon1.aweb.page/p/d4ff1c92-6d88-4860-bd57-cc44aaa50e3a Please take a look and then feel free to ask any question to clarify I find the biggest issue, is that most people actually forget how the band works, this may sounds odd. The band does not create a small stomach but rather a 30ml funnel. -
Hi all! I have a question that I just need input on until I’m able to reach out to my nutritionist or surgeon. I think I messed up!!!! I’m on day 5 of my 7day pre-op diet. The first 5 days consists of tons of water and SF electrolytes, 3 protein shakes , 1-2 boiled eggs, cottage cheese or low-fat string cheese, a lean protein meal with non-starchy veg and non- starchy veggies, SF jello, SF popsicles and broth as snacks or to quell hunger pangs. Think Keto and in fact I have reached ketosis (i have that telltale fruity, albeit, rotten apple flavor in my mouth for 2 days and I have test strips that confirm because I once tried to follow the keto diet). The last two days are protein and then clear liquids. So here’s the thing my mind was set on “keto, keto, keto” and I completely flubbed and ate some raspberries this morning!!!! Raspberries are keto approved but….. I don’t know if they are pre-op gastric bypass approved!! I’m tail spinning. I think I totally messed up! Input please! Thank you!!

There are so many reasons why you may have experienced nausea, could be what you ate, could be acid reflux, could be you ate too fast, could be you ate too much, etc etc. What did eat that made you feel sick? How much did you eat? Are you taking acid reducing medication? How much fluid did you drink around the time of eating? How long did it take to eat your meal? Was it every meal or just one? So little information from you to help with your query. So many questions we have to be able to may be able to help you.

They've said they have it loose to avoid complications. I had mine tight for 13 years and it didn't help me lose a single lb. In my opinion they're nonsense things. And to answer the OPs query, biased as I am, I'd do what I did a couple months ago: whip it out and revise to a bypass which has the added benefit of actually working.

While all weigh loss is excellent, it would be helpful if you filled in your profile, starting weight, height, current weight so as to give context to your query.

Another query that comes to mind is post-op inflammation. I read that several natural remedies can aid in the process of healing and inflammation such as curcumin, ginger, and CBD. Has anyone dealt with this or has any experience? Please share

TheBusierBee posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Peeps, 40m here. I'm 7 days post op and got my bowels moving about 2 days back. However , after passing motion, I'm noticing a brownish rectal discharge staining my underwear. Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and whether this resolves on its own or is something to be concerned about. It's a bit embarassing especially if I'm wearing light coloured clothing. Please help !!! -
Thank you....it's not said enough!!

I agree - thanks to all who've taken the time & trouble to reply to my queries! This forum has been so helpful to me - I don't know anybody who's had wls and the hospital I went to is a 2 hour drive away, so no support group locally at all. Good luck with your surgery - I dreaded mine, but it's been such a positive experience. -
Anyone for October 2020?
Deb9386 replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm booked in for 22nd October in London UK! I'll be starting the pre-op diet on Sunday - slightly earlier than the 2 weeks by Consultant's advice. I'm very nervous about the operation, but definitely glad to have found the site. There's very limited information available from my dietitian - and a lot of gaps which I'll have to query with her - so am delighted to have so much experience to access on this site! -
Does VSG Help with IBS/Bloating Issues?
Hop_Scotch replied to LAJ23's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hopefully someone with similar issues will response to your query before too long. I haven't had such issues I am wondering if you have ever tried a low FODMAP food diet? It may bring some relief if you have a low tolerance to FODMAP food items. -

Dirty dark sleeve secrets :P Confessional
KarenLR75 replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also took your post as a conversation starter. That is a big issue sometimes with all of this 'written communication' is interpretation of tone and intent sometimes. My answers to your inquiry are as follows: 1) Vitamin query - I'm still on vitamin patches only and I have had 1 day each week where I've forgotten to put on a new patch. The 2nd time I forgot, I was back at the hospital getting IV fluids and find out my blood thinning levels were way too high. I let the vitamin patch slide when I got home as I momentarily was simply overwhelmed. I also have huge invested interest in trying to do anything to stave off as much hair loss as possible. I understand that I can still do all the very SMALL things that MAY have a slight impact (or not) on trying to reduce hair loss and it may not matter one iota. However, I will at least know that I did all that anyone has suggested/can think of/ dr input/ veteran input, etc. In the end, what will come...will come. And probably on Month 4 when I'm on a cruise ship! 2) Regarding NSAID's - ABSOLUTEY not cuz am on a blood thinner so I've been used to avoiding these since 2011. It would be a great threat to me physically, especially these days. I also remember a woman I worked with for 10 yrs who downed multiple doses of Ibuprofen throughout the day..way more than suggested & ended up with MAJOR issues in the hospital with her stomach/intestines and that sticks in the back of my mind. 3) Eating out - too afraid & am supposed to just start purees tomorrow. After my experience today, am going to throttle that back & talk to Dr. When time comes that I felt am ok with eating out, I'll go to places where I know I can order a healthy/clean meal. This is an area I identified as potential weakness as my emotional/mental wellbeing needs more work. I do however follow a fun thread of BEFORE & AFTER food/meal pics and have learned a lot of easy things. Also learned that I'm online with some AMAZINGLY gifted cooks and meal 'wonder workers'. There are also ppl like Fluffychix and others that will help out with ppl seeking easier ways to get their meals at home. One mental/or experience advantage I have is that I was a member of AA/NA for many yrs and I still keep at heart the warning to stay away from people, places and things that can jeopardize my 12 step program or 'insert goal here' Err..I forgot the other questions! LOL -
July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
KarenLR75 replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had an RNY but I experienced similar sensations..pulling at my incisions especially the larger ones and I had a particularly deep/semi-constant burning pain on the 'right side' incisions - again..especially the larger one. I did mention to Dr. @ post op visit and both he and his staff told me the burning sensations were a good sign? Healing, I guess? I had some other urgent issues we had to deal with so I didn't query them further about why specifically it was a good sign, but they definitely indicated that it was normal for my situation. Whenever I engage my core...it would burn and tug. Am now 17 days post op and the tugging and burning have both stopped. I have a decent pain tolerance but I had both gas/constipation and other abdominal aches that I address primarily by walking, taking Gas-Ex, ensuring I had semi-regular bowel movements..and a med , Robaxin, that my dr prescribes all his patients (for muscle spasms and light pain relief). I don't take it these days. -
Hi Jennifer . I really hope you aren’t kept waiting too long . I know what you mean , I had been going and collecting information I was asked to get , and they never even asked me for it .Yes , it’s SO frustrating , and when you’re told one thing is happening and it doesn’t , and you don’t even hear anything from them. They asked me to make a special appointment with the surgeon to discuss when my surgery would be done, a 2 day performance for me to get there , and he told me November 2018, and I never heard anymore . I probably wouldn’t have done by now if the dietician I saw hadn’t queried it ! Stick with it Jennifer , it will be worth it in the end . I’ll definitely keep you posted. I know it may be different in the UK to the U.S. but it’s good to be able to compare notes! Good luck Peggy .

I can empathise with you Jen. I hate mine too . I have the nasal one as well and it’s so uncomfortable . I haven’t been using it properly . I hope you still get your surgery . When is it ? Mine is next Monday . I’m hoping it won’t affect me having the surgery either . I started this journey 2 and 1/2. years ago , and have been going miles every month for appointments , then off to other places they send me to locally . The surgeon told me it would be last November and it never happened and was still going for appointments , until someone queried a few weeks ago why I hadn’t had it yet . I quickly got a date for July, and that was cancelled at the very last minute because of the extreme heat that day, I now have one for next Monday . I’ve been on the liver diet for weeks now . Im telling you this to say don’t give up . I think it’s usual to wait a year- 18 months to get surgery . I am in England tho, I don’t know if it’s different in other places . Where are you ? I wish you all the best with this . 😊

Be faithful to your Miralax, I am on a twice daily game plan, if I deviate I end up in the ER, had to have a Milk/Molasses Enema to dislodge things in early May. Repeat trip yesterday, not as bad but now I have ileitis, querying whether it could be a precursor to IBS? But if so it is probably the IBS-C,variety, but it is still all good. Not my RNY surgery's fault as much as being 73. You do develop. marring, scarring and poor transmission in the Old Chassis. But even if I have to strip off all my chrome, I am a Spiffy- Mobile and I shall make it to the Finish Line too.🚘🚗🚘
