Preop and directly postop liquid diet and socializing
Honestly, I have no idea. I am on my last day of a 14 day liquid diet (protein shakes, broth, Jello and 2 cups of lettuce per day) - surgery is tomorrow. I have eaten a marshmallow, 5 potato chips, and a piece of bread - those are my list of cheats in the last 14 days (hardly worth cheating for) - but I have to tell you that I have skipped all temptation - I mean, it is only two weeks pre-op.... The kids and my husband go out to dinner, I have stayed home. People want to get together, my family goes there and I have stayed home. I don't expect to live my life like this - but this is a hard transition - and it is also not negotiable with my surgeon - so I tried to make it as easy as possible on myself. For the first week pre-op, my impression is that you don't really want to eat - and then we look forward to other things besides just Protein (seriously, I went to the supermarket and was so excited about buying tomato Soup, V8 and some diet snapple...pathetic). And then real food starts to come back....I know I can make it. So can you - I would limit the social stuff in pre-op if you struggle with it.

What do I need to take along to the hospital?
Yes - we need these recommendations because neither one of those two things are on the NYU list. - a robe - slippers That was it :smile2:

Does the band help or cause Reflux? I'm confused..
My understanding is that the lap band helps you lose weight and this in turn helps with weight induced reflux. BUT....I think there is a time period where a person is learning to eat where they may battle some reflux issues..

how long to get banded from 1st visit?
Yes - mine was delayed just because I was on vacation. My longest wait was the period leading up to my surgical consult - everything else has been quick quick quick. As I said, the delay in my surgery date only had to do with my 3 week vacation. Insurance approval is the pain. But I think that when you have a good doctor and they are organized and submit well, this can be made easier too. I realized some time in the process that they are fighting WITH ME to get approval - it is how they make their living, no?

A question about the pre op diet
You get a meal!!! That's awesome Low carb veggie basically means low sugar - so something like broccoli. Lean Protein is a close to fat free as you can get - lean lean turkey or chicken, fat free cottage cheese... or beans... I am dreaming of this meal of yours...I am on day 12 of 14 LIQUID ONLY.... GOOD LUCK!

I have surgery on Tuesday but am having doubts
Obviously whatever you decide is okay. But I look at your age, you are 28.... I am 38 and I get banded on Monday... and I WISH TO GOD that I had done it at 28 instead of trying and failing for 10 years to lose weight. I lost 10 years of my life that I could have been healthier and happier with myself. I think that the vast majority of people who get the lap band probably have that little voice in the back of their head that says QUITTER...but come on... we are not quitting - we are brave and willing to do what it takes to ensure our success. My surgeon has a bunch of Q&As online and they are really good on this topic.... watch a couple!! July 26ers...where is everyone??
Me too - no nerves right now, just want to get on with it.
-
Confused about eating and calories
I thought that you need 1 gram of protein for every two pounds of body weight.... at least an active person does...
-
July 26ers...where is everyone??
Okay...4 more liquids days....we can do it... I am nervous but so excited... just seeing these first couple of pounds come off - it is majorly motivating. HOW ARE THE OTHER JULY 26ers DOING????

Something I didn't even worry about...
Just back from my primary doctor who says I look fine and that he hears nothing in my lungs. WHEW.... perhaps the doctor at NYU should have listened to my lungs or done some sort of physical exam before telling me to reschedule? Now, if I can calm down and get through the remaining 5 liquid days.....
-
Something I didn't even worry about...
The doctor said they worry about people having asthma attacks under anethesia.. even if you don't have asthma. I am heading to my general doctor today - I think I am starting to imagine things and making myself neurotic. I will ask him to assess my health - rather than leaving it up to me. Let's be honest - in pre-op yesterday, they didn't listen to my lungs at all so they were making their assessment based on how I sounded talking.... but I have been told by my ENT that my reflux causes a change in your voice too. The idea that I would have to push this surgery back and stay liquid makes me want to give up.

Something I didn't even worry about...
Went to pre-op testing today at NYU - met with the nurse, did the EKG, blood work and chest x-ray. Went in to see anesthesiologist and she said everything looked good. Then she asked me if I always talked like this - and I said no, that I had a sinus infection 3 weeks ago and I was just getting over the cough. She told me she thought it would be better to postpone surgery - ARE YOU KIDDING????? I have been liquid for 8 days now....I am having this surgery on Monday. I am home now - headed for a nap - try to get better as quickly as possible. Doc wants me to call her on Friday to let her know if I am better and ready to go. STAY HEALTHY PEOPLE!!!!

NYU Pre-Op Testing Today
Anyone know what I am in for today? Excited because this officially means one week until I am banded.

First day of liquid diet...
I am using the Muscle Milk Light from GNC - 190 calories per shake and 25 grams of protein. It is actually kind of good and if you don't like the foam, just put the powder in a shaker with water - skip the blender and the ice - then you can thin it out pretty easily to whatever consistency you like.

Can I starve the children?
OMG - on day 7 of 14-day liquid diet.... have to go to the grocery store now to pick up the groceries and I don't want to go.... preparing food for my kids is like TORTURE. I might be able to do the liquid thing more easily if I was left alone - but help..... to make matters worse, my husband, who is a chef and normally feeds everyone, will be away for work this week - which means not only do I have to further develop my love of Protein shakes, but I have to make the kids 3 meals a day.... too bad they are too little to feed themselves - HAHA. The kids will probably lose weight while I won't drop a pound....

on liquid diet and STARVING!!!!!!! HEEELLLPPP!
I think I am losing my mind..... The first 5 days, I really felt in control and excited. Then I spent 2 days traveling and in hotel rooms and my rhythm fell apart..... arghghghgh. Refocus.... the prize is so close....8 days until band.....
-
on liquid diet and STARVING!!!!!!! HEEELLLPPP!
FF - drink broth - lots of it. Keep drinking it and then eat lettuce. When done, have a shake. That's how I get through lunch and dinner. The trifecta.... you can do it.
-
First Day of Pre-Op Diet, help!
I have the same list - except that I am allowed 2 cups of lettuce per day What fun... The crazy thing I have noticed today (day 3 of 14) is that I thought I was well hydrated before - but obviously not because I have to pee like every 30 minutes - whoo hoo!
-
who is getting banded july 26?
July 26 is a good day FF - For me, the monumental loss would be at about 82 lbs - at that point, I will feel like eveything after that is a happy surprise. But yes, I have an initial "PLEASE LET ME LOSE 40 LB" goal.... god, let me lose anything I guess.... and keep it off - I WOULD CELEBRATE THAT :puke: I guess we lapband people all know how impossible it is to lose and keep the weight off!!!! I am drinking the muscle milk light shakes from GNC - I get 5 per day which lessens my stress - if I only got 3 shakes per day, I might have a nervous breakdown!!

Attn Smokers: Have any Pre or Post Ops NOT been required to quit smoking?
I didn't smoke pregnant but I started right after my c-section and I did not heal well. I quit three weeks ago and my surgery in basically in a week.... I hope that is good enough.
