I just turned 65. I was banded when I was 61. I have had my band for 3 1/2 years. I had wanted some kind of surgery for years, but had neither researched it, nor heard of lapbanding. I was never, too, self conscious until I was too heavy for one of the tables at a medical center, and they had to send me to another center which had a table for over 250 lbs. Then I was embarrassed! I was ready, too because of my arthritis and high blood pressure. Welcome to lapband!

Hi Donna I am 66, yes I wish I had done it when I was younger but my insurance probably would not have covered it.. I was diabetic, hypertensive and had high cholestrol.. arthritis in knees and back.. or at least my knees and back hurt all the time.. @ 5'0 and almost 200bs I was almost immobile..Since being banded in Jan. I no longer have to take diabetic meds , high cholesterol med has been cut in half and my blood pressure is normal..I have not felt this good in many years.. I believe the band has saved my life.. I am about 20 lbs or so from my goal and I have not had any problems.. good luck and I wish you success..

Donna - I'm 58 (as of next week), but I'm going to comment, anyway :-)
I have lost and gained so much weight over the years, I never stopped to think about surgery. This last round of weight (over 90 pound gain), really threw me. This time, being post menopausal, it seemed impossible to eat the small amount necessary to drop some weight. So, I continued to gain. I was on blood pressure meds, had high cholesterol, my knees were ready to give out, along with various other obesity related issues and pain.
It wasn't until my next door neighbor told me that she had a bypass, that I even considered surgery. After months of turmoil on what to do, I settled on the lap band with plication. I'm 4 months out, 37 pounds lighter, off the blood pressure meds, knees rarely hurt, and I'm half way to my goal (I set a reasonable goal of 150). Do I wish I did it sooner? So far, I haven't felt that way. I'm just glad that I DID it, and my weight is going in the other direction.
Good luck! You came to the right place, and will get lots of good info and support on this site.

Hi Donna and welcome. I will be 63 in October and today is my one year. Best thing I ever ever did. You can read my blog right below yours and it sort of tells my journey.
People complain about the pre-op diet being liquids and post-op liquids. Well we have eaten enough food (we wouldn't be here if we were perfect) to get us by. I never once thought of cheating because I was too afraid of what could happen to me. I never did any research either. I found this site after the band. I am not good with computers so I never went looking for the unknowns and I am fine with that.
I had many things wrong with me, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, RLS, hernia, stomach in wrong place. Now I only take recommended vitamins and minerals everyday.

I am very proud of you for writing, "what not to do". I was told no driving for about 2-3 weeks after surgery and being a passenger for not more than 1-2 hours for 3-4 weeks.
It is sad you learned the hard way. Just remember about not lifting anything either until the doctor gives the ok. Each doctor has their own views.
Feel better and stay cool in this terrible weather.

WLS is major. Its not a game. Whining and crying is not solving the issue. Cheryl, thank you for again posting common sense. I call my dr all the time, even if it is stupid, to me its NOT. Each to their own. I intend to make my band a success story.

Where there is a Will... there is a way!!!
I just did quite a bit of searching on MFP for several food options. First of all, I need to remember that I'll never be able to eat a full serving offered by either of these restaurants. My guess is that I might be able to eat 1/4 of the meal, perhaps slightly more.
I printed & emailed myself a bunch of food options I might consider so I can make a better educated choice. I found a "skinny" menu option for Maggiano's, which makes me giggle a little bit. The Cheesecake Factory, on the other hand, will present a bit more of a challenge. However, I decided that if I split that yummy cheesecake into 3 servings, I can satisfy my craving & not over do it.
I expect during the 5 days of my business meeting that I will run into a few challenges. After doing a little homework, I feel better about myself.
I have choices & I plan on making the best possible ones with the options I'm given!
    Bring it on.

Congrats on your beakthough. I, also, like bread. I was raised on nice, hot fresh from the oven bread; and you could cut it thick as you want. yummy! But, it is a downfall for me too! I don't eat it,except a roll at a restaurant at times. It is nopw easier to stay away from since my band doesn't like it, too! Happy New Year to you! Karen
