Any one in their 60's and wishing you had done it sooner?

blogs/blog-0028108001375197995.jpgI for one am 63. I had never dreamed I could do this until I found a friend who had tried it. I bet their are many people who don't even know these exist. At least the older people.Maybe I am being naïve, but it is soooo new to me yet here I am set for banding on 8-23. I gave it a lot of thought. I have multiple diseases and chronic conditions, 33 pills a day and not feeling too hot anyway you put it. Anyway I am so happy to be here. I am finding out a lot of new things, to do and not to do. I have questions for my doctor. I found out about plication the other day. So I'm going to ask my doctor about that. Some have had it done and love it. So why I ask isn't there more of it heard about ? I see all these youngsters doing this procedure and I feel envious that I hadn't tried it way before now. But I still have a few good years and I want them to be my happiest ever. I have had many problems over the years as most of us have. Give me some feedback on those of you who have tried it and how you feel about it and those waiting to be banded. I am holding my breath hoping to get through the preop and worried about the procedure and after. Just genuine curiosity. Hope to hear from you soon. Donna

Hi Donna and welcome. I will be 63 in October and today is my one year. Best thing I ever ever did. You can read my blog right below yours and it sort of tells my journey.

People complain about the pre-op diet being liquids and post-op liquids. Well we have eaten enough food (we wouldn't be here if we were perfect) to get us by. I never once thought of cheating because I was too afraid of what could happen to me. I never did any research either. I found this site after the band. I am not good with computers so I never went looking for the unknowns and I am fine with that.

I had many things wrong with me, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, RLS, hernia, stomach in wrong place. Now I only take recommended vitamins and minerals everyday.

I just turned 65. I was banded when I was 61. I have had my band for 3 1/2 years. I had wanted some kind of surgery for years, but had neither researched it, nor heard of lapbanding. I was never, too, self conscious until I was too heavy for one of the tables at a medical center, and they had to send me to another center which had a table for over 250 lbs. Then I was embarrassed! I was ready, too because of my arthritis and high blood pressure. Welcome to lapband!

Hi Donna I am 66, yes I wish I had done it when I was younger but my insurance probably would not have covered it.. I was diabetic, hypertensive and had high cholestrol.. arthritis in knees and back.. or at least my knees and back hurt all the time.. @ 5'0 and almost 200bs I was almost immobile..Since being banded in Jan. I no longer have to take diabetic meds , high cholesterol med has been cut in half and my blood pressure is normal..I have not felt this good in many years.. I believe the band has saved my life.. I am about 20 lbs or so from my goal and I have not had any problems.. good luck and I wish you success..

Donna - I'm 58 (as of next week), but I'm going to comment, anyway :-)

I have lost and gained so much weight over the years, I never stopped to think about surgery. This last round of weight (over 90 pound gain), really threw me. This time, being post menopausal, it seemed impossible to eat the small amount necessary to drop some weight. So, I continued to gain. I was on blood pressure meds, had high cholesterol, my knees were ready to give out, along with various other obesity related issues and pain.

It wasn't until my next door neighbor told me that she had a bypass, that I even considered surgery. After months of turmoil on what to do, I settled on the lap band with plication. I'm 4 months out, 37 pounds lighter, off the blood pressure meds, knees rarely hurt, and I'm half way to my goal (I set a reasonable goal of 150). Do I wish I did it sooner? So far, I haven't felt that way. I'm just glad that I DID it, and my weight is going in the other direction.

Good luck! You came to the right place, and will get lots of good info and support on this site.

I see that all of you has wished they would have done it sooner. I do too, however, for me, I just found out about this not too long ago. I am at a point that I think physically, mentally and emotionally I can handle it. I've had a lot of mental problems along with being over weight along with many chronic conditions and diseases so I've got most of them under control and feel confident about myself. This adventure, this part of my life, I believe will only enhance the good feelings I have of myself today. So I hope this all finds you in the same frame of mind. I don't thik I'll like the preop diet but it is the beginning of the journey that will jumpstart the rest of my life. So I will look at it as a positive step towards the future. I'll be able to handle it and plan on handling all of it and sticking to the program as best as I can. I know all you will too. You sound determined and ready to begin this new chapter in this book of life. Kudos to you all. Donna

Well it's getting down to the wire. Today is the 3rd and I start on the 8th. Like I said before I need to get some liquids stocked up so I don't dehydrate. But I know my liver needs to have a rest and get smaller. I had a diagnoses when I had my gallbladder out that I had an enlarged liver. So I hopeful this preop will help alleviate that and also some weight. What I am having a hard time on is getting chewable, crushable, or dissolving tabs for my meds that I take now. My psychiatric drug are covered. My Aricept is covered. But my migraine and muscle relaxant isn't covered as far as I know now. I'm still working on it. So hopefully before the 23rd I''ll have everything straightened out.

you all have a good day. Donna
