  1. Could you post a link to the journal in question, so that we can see the post?
  2. WHY can't people realize that this thread is in Rants and Raves, and that it is the PERFECT place for threads like this? Once again, here is the disclaimer at the top of the forum:
  3. What gets me is when people aren't joking. I was at the house my brother's friends shared in Memphis, watching a football game. One of the guys was getting pissed at his team and started making some very racist comments towards the black players, really screaming at the TV. You know, yelling comments along the lines of, "What do they have to do, put a plate of fried chicken and greens in front of you to get you to move forward?" I can't even do justice to his comments. Suffice it to say, it was unpleasant to be in the same room. I dunno. Maybe I'm so sensitive to it because I live in an area of the country where there is some very real racial tension between whites and blacks. All I know is that in most cases (here, at least), if a white guy came up to a black person and started cracking racial jokes, there wouldn't be a good ending. But yes, I totally and completely agree with the comment that you need to know your audience. There are "jokes" that are completely okay for people to use among friends, since their friends know that they aren't serious. Strangers don't know that, though.
  4. Well, you can always get exercise equipment for your house, so that you don't have to go to a gym. There is not going to be a solution where you aren't going to have to exercise.

You've GOT to take a picture of that and post it, the next time he does it. One of my old cats LOVED being turned over on his back and being twirled across the floor. Of course, that was the same cat that thought he was a dog and would fetch for hours.
  6. Yes, exactly. That's also sort of what I was trying to say with the whole "belonging to the group makes it different" thing, too. It's one thing when you are joking around with a bunch of people that belong to that group and you happen to be a member of that group, also. But if you aren't a member, and you're making the joke to a bunch of people who also aren't members of the group in question, then it just comes across more as pandering to prejudice than making a joke.

Yeah, I would call that cat weird. Mine likes to try and get my dad's clinic's mascot chihuahua (he talked her neglectful owner out of euthanizing her and got her healthy again) to play with him. Keeps batting at her.

That would be me, also. I'm hoping that I get a bit more curve as I lose weight. Right now, it's just flat.
  9. Here's a link to the thread I started when I found that study. I think I linked to the actual study abstract in it. It doesn't have long term (> 10 years) results, but those look promising when you consider the result comparisons up to that point.
  10. Have you read Kaliah Ali's book? I can't remember the name of it, but I've heard lots of good stuff about it.

My cats would probably go nuts, I think, if I brought a pig in. But maybe not. One of them isn't even afraid of dogs, so he'd probably make friends very quickly.

There are two ways: 1. When the pic is uploaded to an online service, click on the little picture icon above the text window where you are entering a reply and enter the url in the message box that comes up. 2. If the pic is only on your computer, click on the little paper-clip and you can upload the picture from your computer as an attachment.

This reminds me of the King of the Hill episode where Hank had to get a butt prosthesis.

Aw! That sounds adorable. I'd never considered having a pot-bellied pig before.
  15. You can also get the oh-so-pleasant soft stop indicator of excess sinus drainage, like I did. For a long time, I thought I didn't have one, until I realized that was happening.
  16. Very true. It's one thing to start a post with "Funny joke about...." It's very different to post something that makes fun of a group of people that had been discussed in a rather heated on-going discussion, especially when you know that there are members of that group currently posting on the board. In other words, the impression changes from "this is meant to be funny" to "this is meant to piss people off."
  17. To me, it really depends on whether the person cracking the joke belongs to the group or culture that he's making the joke about. You know, whether he intrinsically understands the nuances of that culture. Otherwise, it just appears to be a person playing to people's prejudices and hoping to get a laugh by, in many cases, denigrating an entire culture or group of people.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure! My dad's a vet, btw, so I was always obsessed with animals as a kid (and even now, I guess :nervous). I used to sit and stare at a book of dog breeds and dream about having all the unusual-looking ones. I always wanted a bull terrier, just because of the snout. Unfortunately, I found out that I'm allergic to dogs (I get hives when they lick me or if I pet them for very long), so I usually stick to cats now. Although, I may break my "no dogs" rule one of these days, if I can get a Great Dane. Love those.
  19. Guess what I just got? An email from the same damn student that didn't start coming to the lecture until he made a 30 on the first exam (ha actually passed the 2nd one - barely), asking me to send him the powerpoint handouts of all the chapters on next week's exam and the review sheet. Kinda ticks me off. For one, he should have still had those handouts, since we've only met for two classes (one class a week) since the last exam and I gave them out during class. The second thing is that he would have gotten the review sheet if he had bothered to come to class this past Friday. No wonder the guy has a fucking 51 average so far.
  20. To me (and Derick knows I think he's a good guy, so it isn't that I don't), it's no different than a white person getting up on stage in black-face, dancing around and singing exagerratedly with their eyes bugged out. It's offensive. This statement following the quote wasn't amusing in the slightest.

Good, I think! You must either be into ecology/wildlife science or read a lot!
  22. anonemouse replied to pippinje's topic in The Lounge
Tifferoni, is that a bull terrier or some other breed?
  23. How do I make a thread? Seriously, you've told me several times where the "new thread" button is, but I still can't find it.
  24. I'm not a hunter, but as someone with a degree in wildlife and fisheries science, I recognize that it is necessary, especially when it comes to species like deer. Otherwise, you get an extremely large population with high rates of disease, parasitism, effects from lack of available food, etc. To top it off, overly-large populations of deer mean increased probability of deer/human interaction, usually in the form of road accidents. I highly respect the people that do it with dignity and respect for the animal.
  25. Like others have said, I thought I would have to take tiny bites and sips. I don't. I can take normal-sized bites and drink normally very easily. I thought that there would be a lot of foods that I wouldn't be able to eat. In reality, the only food that gives me trouble is very soft bread. And even there, I can get small amounts down if I go slowly. I can eat Pasta, meat, and any vegetable just fine. With the soft stop, I thought it would be very easy to tell what it was, that it was going to be a hiccup or burp or whatever. Instead, it took me nearly 4 months to figure out what mine is, and it's a lot of sinus drainage. If I eat beyond that, I don't PB or anything, I'm just uncomfortably full. I thought I was guaranteed to PB or slime. I haven't done either yet, and I've only gotten stuck once (and it went down after a few minutes).
