    Pittsburgh Banders

from my experience, many bypass patients gain the weight back....if you use the band as a tool AND change your eating and exercise habits the BAND works! good luck!
  6. 3rd fill was it for me.......could still have some restriction added, because I do have some volume some days but I am happy with where I am....It's all up to you....At this level of restriction I can still eat a small amount of whole grain and that is important to me to maintain bowel health so I am staying here for now anyways!

    big trouble

Your insurance approval will depend on your comorbidities and how well your testing indicates the need for surgery. You may or may not need to show weight loss....don't loose hope. BTW I had my surgery done at AGH, Dr Uchal and I have done all my followups with Colella and he quit last week! He went to UPMC and AGH is suing him for breach of contract....The place may become a nightmare....I may stick with them as until now I have been half pleased with aftercare....we will see! Good Luck
  8. i too have avoided carbs....if i eat any i notice that my hunger is "bigger".....i had my third fill 10 days ago and i have had some sticks and am feeling restriction for the first time. up until now i have lost with portion control, carb limitation, and exercise.........this week, i didn't like the band very much as it has been very hard to get protein down without pain....i am learning to chew chew chew and take smaller bites and this has helped.....some things i have no problem with...but meat, yikes!

Weigh in... how much have u lost?

    still going....
  12. Hi Shassy! Just thinking about you and wanted to see how you're doing? -BG

  13. Since surgery, I have been following diet to a t. I am only eating what is on the list, skim milk, broth, nsa popcicles. I had a spoonful of mashed potatoes on Christmas day and a small amt of squash later that eve, otherwise I have been on liquids. I don't really feel a whole lot of restriction, I only notice if I forget and take a gulp of my drink. I am hoping to be down 50 pounds on my fill date!!!!!

Good Luck to you, bring copies of every test and every clearance to your appt, including your dietary stuff and sleep study.............also, write dowwn your queestions so you will remember them during the appt.

  14. So, I started a preop diet then, on my own....I wanted to get a good head start.....At my appt I was down 15 pounds, and I lost another 10 before surgery. My appt BMI was 37, and I too was scared to loose anymore before approval, but that only took a few days and so I continued.....mostly with portion control. As far as the 6 months preop diet, I had one of those sheets from the orientation for 6 consecutive months to hand to patty at my consult--as well as all the other requirements---hence, I was ready to be scheduled. I asked during my consult for him to show me where the port would be, and they pick the type of band for you, depending on availability and body structure. I have the lap band. Dr Uchal did the surgery with Colella assist. I was in much more pain postop than I expected, but the meds did manage it. I got up out of bed that evening and walked the halls so I would avoid complications and get my bowels moving....I would recommend this.

  15. ...thanks for the encouragement to keep going!!! My consult was quite simply...Dr Colella came in sat down and said do you have any questions....I asked my questions and told him why I wanted the lapband and he answered the questions and said great, you are the perfect candidate and patty will be in....patty came in and started asking for my testing, i had copies of everything so we went down the line and i handed her copies and she said ok, you can have surgery next week, there will be no problem with your approval. i started to panic about then because i was so shocked that i could have surg in 1 week......I talked to her about the issues I had with that, Tgiving, hunting season, work schedule and we decided to schedule Dec 8. That gave me 3 weeks to really prepare.
