  1. Thanks
Smanky got a reaction from OMGyoulooksoogoodgirl in 3 months post op and I'm done.
That lady is still in a process, and so long as her doctor and team are on-board and guiding her, good for her. Someone else's happiness is no-one else's business.
Consider how many people thought our obese bodies were disgusting and they'd "rather die" than look like us. Thinking the same of a skinny person is the exact same energy. Glad you're finding your happy place weight wise, but no need to be judging others on the way. We've all had our fill of that, surely?

Yes to this one too! The bench stools at the airport that are bolted into the floor, with a metal back that I never used to sit in (I'd stand at the bench instead) are now super roomy and I could plop a child on my lap and still fit. No-Longer-Fearing-Chairs is honestly one of the enduring NSV high-points. 🤸‍♀️

Hi, just signed up, didn't see an "introducing yourself" section. Have had various gastro related issues for the last couple years, found that I did not tolerate the PPI well, but have Barrett's Esophagus, which has to be addressed. Since I gained a fair amount of weight during Covid, looks like I qualify for bypass surgery which is a recommended approach to dealing with the Barrett's. I'm still going through various qualifying phases, but the surgeon/hospital here seem to know the drill. Still need to get my cardio doc to sign off and to see my primary.
At this point in my life, near 70 years old, having been reduced to the Fodmap diet to minimize GERD (acid reflux), I'm ok with the more limited post surgical diet. I'm also looking to get my mobility back-- resumed at the gym, but it isn't as easy to drop the weight as it was 10 or 15 years ago when I stopped smoking and went full maniac on diet (paleo) and exercise (2 workouts/day plus swimming, pilates, etc).
Just wanted to plug in here and as things progress on this journey, tap into the knowledge base here.
    Glad I found this place.

    Here is a fun one!
So, I have always been super fat so when it came to food in public I would over think things.
For example: If we went to a serve yourself place (buffet, wedding, event, etc) I would NEVER bring back extra food or an extra plate for my wife or anyone I was with. I didn't want to be "the fat girl with 2 plates". Or, if we went somewhere with assigned seating, I would always get the pick of the seat I wanted, hoping to be an end seat so I can overflow into the isle... OK OK You get the point.
We went to a Broadway show (Beetlejuice- was awesome, different conversation) and when I went to pick my seat my wife said "Nope you are smaller than me now, I want that seat" HAHA I didn't think much of it.
But, then this weekend we were at an all inclusive resort which had like a late night snack grab and go thing. I said I was going to see what they had to get a snack and my wife says "bring me back something"... I did... 2 PLATES!
THAT'S RIGHT, THAT'S THE NSV! HAHA I carried 2 plates of food back from the self serve bar and didn't even hesitate.
Funny but a NSV for me, none the less!!!

I can relate to the seating issues. I work in a high school and last year (I had my RNY 6/22) I had to SQUEEZE in and out of the desks and HATED it. I felt like every time I stood up all the kids were watching and judging (high Schoolers that could've cared less). I had to push my way out. Now I get in and out so easy! Again, the students could care less.

    Love this NSV.
For me - gone are the days of panicking when a waiter starts to show my family to a booth, rather than a table where I can push my chair back as far as I need. Some of the most public embarrassment I've faced during my life as a person with obesity.

I think night time hunger is really common. My worst time is late afternoon. It's a constant battle. Sometimes I swap around dinner with my afternoon snack (so dinner around 3:00 or 4:00, snack around 6:00 or 7:00), sometimes I'll eat things like baby carrots dipped in hummus or ranch yogurt (ranch dressing mix with plain Greek yogurt) (carrots usually irritate my stomach after awhile, so I rarely eat much of this), other times sugar free Jello or sugar free popsicles. Anything to keep me from blowing it. You'll probably have to do the same - if you can't take your mind off it somehow, figure out how you can swap things around to make it easier - or stock up on "safe" things (some people chew SF gum or drink hot tea...). Or get out of the house (easier said then done at night - easier for me in the afternoon!)

Yes! I had a blue handbag in storage which, even with the strap extended as long as it could, would sit waaaay too close to my armpit pre-surgery. Now it sits at my hip. The downside is that it's spent SO long in storage the faux leather is starting to disintegrate. The NSV that got away!

Something that recently hit me: I am noticeably smaller than my partner. I'm not the big woman with a skinny guy anymore, I'm officially the little spoon. It's such uncharted territory, and I love that I'm getting to experience it!

I love a cross body handbag. My NSV is having to shorten the strap because the bag hangs way to low now that my back is so much thinner.

As others have mentioned, the sleeve is cheaper and also a quicker surgery to do versus the RNY. The Mini Bypass (Omega Loop) that I got is also a quicker surgery to perform since there's one less intestinal join, but with similar benefits to the RNY. I had originally wanted the sleeve, but because of my pre-existing GERD, my surgeon advised me away from the sleeve and recommended the bypass instead. I am very happy with the choice and the results, and only regret not doing this sooner.
Recovery for the mini bypass was a few weeks, but I had a hiatal hernia repair done at the same time, so I had a double whammy of pain. First two weeks were pretty rough. But honestly, recovery was pretty smooth all things considered!
The main downside of the bypass is the lifelong supplements, but it's a part of my routine and as much as I dislike having to take a handful of pills every evening, it's only a small inconvenience.

It was totally meant to be funny - I can't help myself, even when I'm attempting a serious point! Maybe "obesey" will catch on.
And I love "morbidly luscious". I think that needs to be adopted immediately.

Bypass was once the gold standard of weight loss surgeries up until a few years ago, when sleeve took over. It's easier for surgeons to perform, it's cheaper, and a lot of people are afraid of the bypass. Thus, sleeve is currently the most popular weight loss surgery.
I went with bypass because I had GERD prior to surgery. Bypass usually improves if not outright cures GERD, whereas sleeve can make it worse (doesn't happen to everyone - and some people say their GERD even improved after getting sleeved, but the risk of having it get worse was too high for my comfort, so I chose bypass).
bypass is the stronger of the two surgeries, but sleeve is close. And yes, you have more options for revision after sleeve, but then, very few people who have bypass get theirs revised.
honestly, they both have their pros and cons. There are some health conditions (like GERD) that would make one surgery more appropriate for you than the other, but barring that, it really comes down to personal preference. They're both good surgeries and you'll find many examples on here of people who've been very successful with both.
I love my bypass and would choose it again if I had to make the choice today.

I think you made a great case in your post. Tell her you love her, make your case as you did here, and tell her you need her support. Can show her the statistics of safety which are excellent concerning all wls. Safer than other types of surgeries and how many are performed a year. If she is still uncooperative, stay firm with your decision because it is your health at stake. If it causes true conflict then consider seeing a therapist together. Good luck, we're are rooting for you.

I’d also add that carrying your weight with your current co morbidities you have seriously compromised your health & longevity & it will only get worse. The surgery will help you lose the weight so you can live a longer, healthier life with her. Remind her you’ve dieted before & yet here you are. You need the extra help & opportunities surgery offers.
