Denise68 got a reaction from lyladyp in 12 years after surgery
    Hi ....
a few lessons I did learn is don’t go back to eating what made you heavy, after a few years I started my bad eating again and gained 30 pounds back. I wasn’t happy with myself at all. So I started back from the beginning after I got out of the hospital. It worked for me and since then I have kept my weight down. You have done an amazing job with your weight loss. Keep up the great work .

Hi everyone...My name is Denise and I’m from NJ ,I had my surgery 4/20/09. The day of my surgery I weighed 310 pounds and as of this morning I am 141 pounds. I still struggle with my food addiction and some days are harder then others.I also have bipolar . I was just wandering if there’s anyone that has had the surgery as long as me.

I know it’s a little scary, but it will change your life for the better. If I didn’t do the surgery I know I’d have diabetes and high blood pressure right now. Some of my family members have both. When I got scared ,because it’s normal too, it’s a surgery , but I would think of all things I would be able to do in my new body. Your life will change for the good. So will your health.

Hi , I was diagnosed with bipolar at age 18 and I’m 52 now, in my 30’s is when I started really taking care of my mental health, I had my surgery when I was 40 and being on my medication and making sure I had a great support system at home helped me a lot. To this day I still have my mood swings but not as bad. Losing the weight helped my bipolar sooo much, I didn’t like myself at all being heavy and not being able to lose the weight on my own, my surgery saved my life and my mental health. I love myself and the person I see in the mirror, I use to dream of being thinner and now I can wear jeans and certain clothes , I didn’t wear jeans for 25 years when I put my first size 4 on ,I was a new woman. Please know the surgery doesn’t make our bipolar go away but it helps it so much because we , me , loves who I am now . Good luck with your new journey and keep me posted, I’d love to know how your doing with your surgery and your mental health 🙂

your pouch is probably fine. Supposedly it takes work to stretch it - as in chronic overstuffing. You're probably just used to eating more, and it's hard to cut back once you've been eating at a higher calorie level. Regain is pretty common - but I know a lot of people who've managed to lose it. Some have gone to Weight Watchers, some start counting calories again, some do Keto, some do Intermittent Fasting - whatever works. But I would get on it now before it really gets out of control. It'll be a lot easier to lose 20 lbs than 50...
If you're a calorie counter (I am...), then track your intake for a week or two to figure out what your current average calorie intake is. I find it hard to drastically cut mine, so I just try to cut it by 100-ish calories at first, then after a week or two, I'll cut another 100 calories - and so on
if you hate calorie counting, then go back to following the rules we all followed the first year - Protein first, then non-starchy veggies, and then if you have room, a small serving of fruit or whole grain carb. Or find a program that you like and can stick with for awhile (like Keto or WW), and try that...

Denise68 reacted to 1Artist in 10 yr, 8 month RNY weight loss....w/ challenges.
It has been many years since I checked into Bariatricpal. My surgery on 9/1/2011 was at the INDIANA University Medical Center Bariatric Dept. The decision was made for weight loss and diabetic control. Over the years of owning two businesses, raising two sons, getting my husband through dental school then music school, while practicing my own career as an artist, my struggle with healthy eating and controlling diabetes was eventually too much. At the weight of 299 lbs and age of 71 yr and the consistently worsening sugar control, to the point that I was giving myself daily insulin shots, was a wake up call. It isn't an easy decision to jump into a serious surgery, like this if you don't have access to the specialist medical practice like the IU Medical campus. The Department offered lectures and programs to educate people about their obesity and ways to get help. I never felt pressured to sign up for the surgery but after a few appointments with the surgeon and nutritionist, several medical tests reassured me that my basic health was able to handle the surgery, I followed through with the required initial diet and weight loss. I lost 45 lbs in the first 4 months. It was rather easy to do by following the diet prescribed and I even thought about forgoing the surgery, except for the diabetes issue.
Going ahead with the recommended RNY and strictly following the diet, I got down to 165 lbs. That was higher than I thought would be ideal but the sight of boney neck, face and arms seemed fine. For anyone who is older like me, I strongly encourage that you research your area for a surgery clinic that is recommended and consider your options. The following advantages that I received:
    1. Loads of energy.
    2. Longer life, (said my cardiologist)
    3. Feeling younger.
    4. More interest in going out for travel and exercising.
Having recommended it I must say that I don't recommend it for young people who are doing it for vanity alone. Why?
    1. You have to follow strict regiment on Vitamins and follow up care.
    2. You have to absolutely restrict your food intake. You have to be prepared for a complete change of food choices.
    3. You have to be psychologically prepared to be successful over all temptations.
ISSUES that I have encountered may be due to lack of nutrition. My current medical care is concentrated on low hemoglobin , anemia, kidney function. The good news is that my diabetes is under control and I haven't needed insulin or any medication since surgery.
After years of sticking to the rules for eating, I cannot overeat. A couple of bites of Protein, tiny veggies, a bite of fruit fills my stomach to the point that I can be in pain. This is one issue that I wonder about and if other long term RNY patients have experienced. You comments are welcome.

Denise68 reacted to WanderingHeart in Mashed roasted cauliflower
    Hey all,
just wanted to share this yummy recipe that is good enough to replace mashed potatoes! this has a much lighter mouth feel and a touch of sweetness from the natural cauliflower flavor.
I find an immersion blender works best. Tried in my regular blender and it did not work so immersion or food processor is recommended.
    1. Break up a head of cauliflower into florets (stem pieces too).
    2. Toss with olive oil or spray with cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
    3. Roast at 300 degrees for 20-25 min until tender and golden but not burnt. Keep an eye on it.
    4. Put roasted cauliflower in a sauce pan (If you have an immersion blender) or a food processor. Add 1/3 cup chicken/bone broth and 2 tbsp of cream cheese. Blend or pulse in food processor. You may need to add more broth or CC to get the consistency you desire. *you could prob sub ricotta or cottage cheese for more Protein but I haven’t tried. Feel free to add Protein Powder too!
    5. Flavor with more salt/pepper, Parmesan or any cheese, plus garlic, onion powder, cayenne to your taste.
