I am five months from finding out I have issues with my liver. Seeing fatty liver clinc this month. They are suggesting weight loss surgery. I started swimming in Sept. 2021 and was at 260 now I an at 240.
I have a history of Gerd, lymphedema, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea, psoriatic arthritis too boot. Boyfriend does not think I need surgery. He comes from a family where his mom is very obese. I have a good friend who is 3 months out past surgery.

I'm right there with you. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the more severe form: nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), are both pretty common for obese people. Note that about 25% of people with NASH develop cirrhosis.
Thankfully weight loss surgery is pretty successful in reversing NASH, as well as a host of other issues like GERD, sleep apnea, diabetes & heart disease.
At the end of the day, only you can decide if surgery is the right thing for you. If you do go the surgical route, you'll find lots of supportive people here.

I have wondered about that. I struggled with restrictive eating before surgery so I think my body has survived on so few calories for so long its immune to it. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Can totally relate ( I am now 6mth post op vsg) at 6 weeks it felt I was working hard and getting no where.
    Try taking your measurements
Even when I am not loosing inches have definitely gone.
My weight pre pre op! 135 ( fast forward 1 year delay due to no ops covid)
    At surgery 119
At 6 weeks post op 111
I have just started lap swimming 1 hr 4 times a week and am at 107
Not earth shattering but circulation bp and liver have improved so that's good
Slow its much harder to binge when I'm down (I've tried!!)
My advice ( for what it's worth!) Is look for the positives!!
Protein is a ( insert appropriate word!)
I've taken to using unflavoured whey Protein Powder in Soup coffee and orange juice 2 or 3 times a day as mini meals ( not sure of Kosher status of whey powder that would be an added problem)
    Then one proper food meal
What was your pre op surgery and current weight

I was 262 at surgery so about the same ( although I'm a little taller sa bmi slightly less)
    I'm not a speedy looser !
2.5 weeks is still early enough to be holding in some of those iv fluids they pump into you in the hospital. Plenty of people In these forums actually have recorded a TEMPORARY GAIN in weight post op. Also at 2.5 weeks your stomach tissues etc may still be swollen
    Swollen tissues hang onto fluids
So effectively what you're looking is probably cancelled out (TEMPORARILY!) by the fluids you are retaining
IM SURE THIS WILL CHANGE SOON!
In the meantime I suggest/recommend you take baseline measurements NOW!
    ALSO
if you have any clothes that were snug/tight before surgery ...try them on now!!!
Hopefully they will already fit better
    Good luck ...

    Also slow....slower even!
33lb pre surgery 24 lb lost since surgery (57lb loss)
Also 6 mth ago...everything has been stalled this last month
I don't cheat Protein is good altho Water is a challenge
I haven't been able to exercise much so I know this is part of my problem
Age (66)and hypothyroidism don't help I guess...but it is what it is!!
Although it's easy to feel cheesed about it!
    Trend is downward albeit S L O W L Y
and I feel better for the little I have lost so its a matter of carry on and keep going!!!!!!
Keep in touch @ANewJourneyAwaitslet's encourage each other.

yea I'm kind of just going to see what he says - and how I react to it, too. I'm not 100% convinced I want to do this, but it never hurts to see what they say. My wrinkles and saggy neck kinda do drive me crazy, but I'm in my 60s, too, so... Although people used to always say I looked really young for my age. No more. Now I get offered senior discounts without asking.

I always feel awkward when answering these. Most of the time I type all this out then don’t send it. But I’m having one of those days where I don’t care about giving perfect advice or worry about upsetting someone so here it is.
Simple and best answer: follow your plan. Realistic talking to a human answer: yeah you should be fine to have a little nibble. One word of caution, be self aware. That means know yourself enough to know if this little cheat will lead to another. Some people can handle it, some can’t. If you don’t know where you fall on that spectrum I would be very cautious. None of us are perfect but that doesn’t mean don’t try to be perfect with the plan.
Me? I didn’t like my plan so I found one that fit what I wanted to eat. I’m not assuming my doctor is the be-all-end-all best doctor in the world and all the other doctors who have different post op plans are idiots. I found one that listed cottage cheese early and said “hell yah I like cottage cheese” and switched. I didn’t die, I was very successful with my weight loss. At four weeks I was told to try anything I wanted and if it didn’t agree with me I’d know it. Keep the portion sizes in check though. I believe that is the most important advice I can give. Love the restriction, don’t abuse it.

Immediately after the op my surgeon came round and actually advised me to use a straw to sip tiny amounts
I told him I was surprised with this suggestion because I'd read so much " forbidding" straws.
His explanation was that maybe some advised not using straws because if you drink too fast you can swallow air. But that in his experience if you sip through the straw slowly taking small amounts into your mouth and then swallow it helps

Agree! Once I found out that serious weight loss was the only thing that might help me ( very very fatty liver nafld/nash) I knew I had to try. I hadn't considered wls I thought I was too old 65/66 but my docs told me otherwise!
Wls was my best chance for better health befor my liver got worse.
    All has gone well
Weight loss slow compared to some folk but my health has been improving !
AND no complications to date ( I'm 3mth post op)

I've also wondered A LOT about this .. and spent too much time searching the literature etc (I'm a retired academic med/sci it doesn't take much to get me searching!!!) Physiology wasn't my thing and I couldn't find any obvious answers..I wondered/hypothesised to my self that MAYBE during a stall the body is doining something that makes it need/hold onto more of the Water taken in and that this cancels out expected loss due to calorie deficit
Would love to hear other ideas or if any physiologists/clinical biochemists out there actually know !!!!!!

nope - I don't regret it at all. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
there are a lot of food restrictions the first few weeks and months, but after that, no. I can eat pretty much anything - I just eat much smaller portions than I did before surgery. I eat red meat and I've eaten Peanut Butter cups. Mickey D's would be hard because a lot of their items have a lot of fat, which doesn't always sit well with me, but I've eaten a lot of Egg McMuffins since surgery. I can't do diet Coke anymore. I used to be a diet Coke-a-holic, but the carbonation bothers my stomach and it generally tastes like chemicals to me now, but I COULD have it if I wanted to.

Gotta replace the comfort habit....with a new comfort habit....while avoiding crossover addiction.
Very easy to get in trouble with spending, intimacy addiction, gambling, alcohol, drugs, (obsessive dieting, obsessive exercize, obsessive internet use)
Jaelzion has an awesome comfort habit...coffee, and a little alone time to think/relax/refocus.
I like baths, walks, light funny TV, calling my bestie, playing with my pooch, gardening. I also love a cup of coffee and a sit on the porch.
OP...it's a terrific question and the root of regain. It's a huge part of the work. Thanks for bringing it up.

I've definitely found this. I hadn't realised how much I was using food to "self-soothe" until I couldn't have it. I haven't yet found a way to deal with it effectively, other than trying to distract myself by doing other things. It's difficult here - we're in a full lockdown so no visiting family/friends & no trips or holidays, or even going out for a meal/coffee.
But I've now dropped sufficient weight that I need new clothes and I've started selling my better quality clothes (i.e. the stuff I might have bought for a wedding or party and hardly worn) on ebay and am replacing it on ebay with smaller sized items. It's given me a bit of a boost to get into clothes that are at least 3 sizes smaller; it doesn't cost a lot and I'm making what I spend anyway on my sales. It can get a bit addictive though! I've become someone with lots of party/wedding guest dresses and nowhere to go!

I definitely have experienced this. At first I found myself substituting shopping for eating (easy to do, having lost so much weight). Then I realized I was doing that and took a step back. Now when I feel that craving (whether for food or to buy something) I stop and ask myself why? What's going on that I am trying to assuage or pacify? Not long ago, I really wanted a cookie and when I stopped to ask myself why, I realized that I had just come out of a meeting that did not go as well as I had hoped. I felt disappointed, embarrassed, upset. And I wanted a cookie. Once I realized what was at the root of my craving, I was able to redirect those feelings. I got a cup of coffee instead. It was warm and sweet and about 200 fewer calories than the cookie. And I took it and went and sat around the backside of the building where it was quiet and peaceful (being an introvert, that was comforting to me). I thought through what had happened and what to do next as I drank my coffee. And 30 minutes later I was good to go. Every situation is different, but I'm getting better at asking myself "What's going on? Why do you want that?"

according to my calculation, you'd have to eat an excess (above and beyond what your body needs) of 2853 calories a day to gain 9 lbs of true weight, so that's not what's going on. It's probably Water retention.

I’m 62 right now but will be 63 by the time I have my surgery 6/1/21. I was put on my first diet when I was in 2nd grade. They actually put me on diet pills that made me sooooo shaky! Mom cut the pills in half but I was still shaky so cut them into quarters and that worked better but now, today looking back at that and knowing what I now know (I’m a nurse) I just want to ask them “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????” Putting a 4th grader on dexies!!! OMG! After gaining back the 40 lbs id lost (plus some, of course) I was on Weight Watchers, Optifast, Medifast, cabbage Soup diet, Atkins, and on and on. This surgery is hopefully the tool I’ve been searching for! I’m excited by the support from others on this site and I hope to be able to offer support to there as well! We got this!!!

yeah who knew that losing TOO MUCH would ever be a concern but
I'm coming up on my three-month anniversary of gastric sleeve. Have had no problems really at all ... Started at 280 with the two week pre-op diet and weighed 218 this morning. Never really stalled at all and am starting to wonder what's going to happen when I reach my weight target (190). I eat four meals a day but only 200-300 calories per meal so averaging around a 1000 cal/day. I swim 2-3 times a week and do yoga 2-3 times a week and I make sure I hit my Protein goals every day.

And am never really hungry. In fact my afternoon meals often leave me feeling like I ate too much. When I reach my goal how will I add calories? 1000 cal/day is not sustainable forever ... is it?
