Not a psychiatrist but Vyvanse is slow release Dexedrine or Dextroamphetamine. I was put on Dexedrine when diagnosed with bad ADHD at 14 and no other ADHD med, including Vyvanse, has worked for me since. I totally get that part. You'd have to talk to your doc about Dexedrine (the capsules are way better than the tablet for me personally) and everyone is different. Since its not extended release, I take it twice a day. Just thought I'd mention it as an alternative to Vyvanse that may work with the bypass. Good luck to you!

I have not but prior to my surgery I was on Naltrexone for food addiction for a short period of time. My surgeon told me to stop taking the meds in case I needed it at some point after surgery. So I guess it's not unheard of? Hang in there!

I would plan for some good walking shoes. You need to keep moving to avoid blood clots and to start into a healthy lifestyle plan. My doc wanted 10,000 steps a day, and I worked up to that in the first week. Naps and massage are great, but keep yourself moving inbetween or you could have complications.

Reading through this whole thread...Honestly NY, you seem to have convinced yourself the sleeve won’t work. With that initial mindset, it probably won’t. Sorry, it sounds brutal, but attitude is half the battle. This is only a tool (whichever surgery). The real work is in the lifestyle change. That much is up to you. Your success or failure is YOUR choice. NOT the surgery.

I didn’t start at as high a bmi as you but I still thought I’d share my experience so far.
I chose sleeve with my surgeon’s support, even though I suffered from stress related gerd. Yes, I have some issues but manage it with medication. I chose sleeve surgery because it doesn’t change the digestive tract as much as other surgeries. Yes my stomach is smaller but it is the same length as it was as are my intestines. I think this is why absorption is not as great an issue with sleeve. My nutrient absorption is good. I haven’t taken Multi Vitamins since I reached my goal a year ago & my blood work come back fine.
Yes, bypass patients do tend to lose weight more quickly to begin but the 5 year average of weight lost & maintained across both surgeries is about the same - 60-65% of the weight initially to be lost. Dr Vuong has a great video that explains this very well. Think it’s called how to maximise your weight loss.
The amount of weight you successfully lose & maintain really comes down to the individual. Even though I’ve exceeded my original goal (lost about 135%), I’ve had the view that I would find a place of balance between maintaining my weight & maintaining my lifestyle. I believe that if you restrict your food choices & intake to a point you can not enjoy your life & the things you like to do your diet will fail because you will consciously or subconsciously revolt against the restrictions you employed. Honestly, my diet is still pretty restrictive but I’m not quite 2 years out so I have a long way to go to find the balance of what works for me.
Currently, I eat low sugar & artificial sweeteners, low fat, moderate carbs (whole or multi grains but no breads, rice, pasta), fruits, vegetables & of course I’m Protein & Portion Control focussed. I have the odd glass of alcohol but I often don’t finish the glass. It’s easy to manage & doesn’t affect how I socialise so far.
The Keto debate is an interesting one. My 3 week pre surgery diet was keto but I know I could not maintain the high fat requirement long term but that is me - I don’t like overly fatty foods. But it certainly gave me a kick start. There is research that says the high fat content causes cholesterol problems. There’s research that shows that while it may help people with diabetes to begin, long term it can cause erratic insulin levels due to the low carb intake. And of course there’s research that it’s great. I think you have to find the diet that works for you.
Good luck whichever surgery you choose.

I had no problem getting in my liquids from day one either. I really started to feel my restriction kick in when I started solids. 16 months later it’s still strong, and I’m down 131 lbs. Just keep following your surgeons guidelines!

Just walk as much as you can that will help release the gas. I had a friend whom had surgery last year shes helped me so much and when she txt me just walk it will help I didn't even finish reading it and that same night I got up and started doing laps around nurses station. As for the hydration most hospitals have sugar free popsicles that helped a lot as well. Stay strong, each day it gets better! Just walk, sugar free pops and tiny sips. Think of the end results and all the things you will be able to do that you couldn't before. BTW congrats on surgery! 😁 the way u feel now is temporary....

How long has it been happening? Could it be just a stomach bug you picked up? I've had it happened where I picked up a stomach bug and the issue lasted for just over a week. Still, call your surgeons office and get their input and if they don't know then try scheduling an appointment with you PCP. Hope it clears up because that's bound to be miserable...

Guess I never minded people asking how much weight have I lost. But I did mind when people would go further with it and say you need to stop losing weight...etc
That’s when I change the subject or say oh I’ve lost everything I wanted to. People have no filter now a days. Returned a breast augmentation bra to Amazon at the Kohl’s store yesterday and the girl said to me “oh you got your breasts done” while I said yes. It occurred to me afterwards that that was super nosy of her and kinda rude to blurt out. People have no filters now a days. I don’t let it bother me much though. The asking about the weight. I’m proud of myself. Be proud of your accomplishment and don’t let anyone take that away from you by making you feel weird. Turn it around and start asking them personal questions maybe?

I would make sure your Protein intake is where it should be. That was my doctor's main recommendation. My surgeon's PA did say my body was probably getting comfy at my current weight. I just didn't realize I needed to up my protein after post surgery by 20 grams. I do try to look at the bright side of my mistake. Fast fat loss means sagging skin and my face has already aged from the loss I've had so far. And I'm not that old.

Like you, I told almost nobody about my surgery. Lots of people asked me how I lost so much weight, and I simply told them that it was a medically-supervised weight-loss program (which is true). If they ask how much I've lost, I say that I'm not sure and that it doesn't matter because I did it for my health. I then tell them that I feel great and have more energy than I've had in a long time.

OMG, it is so rude for people to ask this. Two different people came up to me at work last week and asked me how much weight I've lost. I am kind of shocked that anyone would think this is appropriate to ask someone AT WORK (or, honestly, anywhere, but especially at work). My answer is to say jokingly, "Oh, you know a lady never tells."

Did they recommend upping the calories because of the stall?
It's hard to tell if an amount of calories is too high or too low. There is way too much variety between persons, even if they have the same height, gender, weight and even activity level.
Sometimes playing around with macronutrients helps or switching up exercise routine. Some people benefit from IF, some from eating at maintenance level for a while before lowering calories again (you might want to take a look at the MATADOR study regarding this).
In the end there is only trial and error. If it works, it's all good. If it doesn't work, you need to change something.

butterisnotacarb reacted to sillykitty in What causes YOUR weight loss stall?
Lots of people will give anecdotal evidence, add calories, reduce calories, drink more Water etc., but IME the only thinkg that breaks a stall is time.
I have seen people on this board been driven crazy by stalls. My advice is just to accept them. And trust that if you follow your program and have a significant calorie deficit, in the mid to long term the weight will come off. There is always a lag and stops and start with weight loss. So that's why it is important to take a longer term view point. There will be times that you will be perfectly on program and stall, or you will get a little off track and lose. The cause and effect of weight loss isn't immediate.

I’m 20 lbs from goal. My year anniversary is in a little more than 2 weeks. Overall I’m down 125 lbs. I’ve been stalled for 2 months. I did pouch reset- see attached. Only 5 days. 1st 2 are Liquid Protein & tough but it worked! scale moved! I’ve done it once before when stalled so this will be my go to. Good luck!

I understand what you're going through and honestly, hang on there! I stalled from Thanksgiving day (only lost a pound between Halloween and Thanksgiving) until yesterday. I had surgery July 9 and have only lost 45 pounds. I am thankful for that loss but read on here how others near my starting weight (5'5 on a good day and 205 pounds) have reached goal and gotten to 124 in 6 or 7 months. I started a pouch reset (I'm on day 4) and the scale moved down 2.4 pounds as of day 3. Also saw my surgeon for 6 month check in and he recommended the Baritastic app and I've been tracking. I had only been getting in 60g Protein a day and upped it to 81 to 95. Upped my exercise intensity as well. But the thing that did it was the reset. Maybe sub a Protein Shake for a meal on a daily basis? Changing it up is always good for a stall.

THIS!!!!!! I am so tired of medical professionals not believing me when I say "I ate 1200 cal/day for 3 months and lost only 3 lbs". I did not cheat. Yes that really happened. I logged every morsel I put in my mouth. Just because you can't figure out why my body is not losing doesn't mean I am cheating.

I imagine in the first few weeks the surgeon is more concerned in how you are healing and tolerating food. If my first post-op appt, I don't recall being asked how much I had lost, it was too soon. Second follow up he asked my weight but didn't comment in general.

I was fortunate enough to skip all of that. I had a zoom consultation then my surgery was booked for a week and a half later. I had to only get blood work done. But I was self pay so I didn’t have to meet insurance set requirements. I also received almost half off the procedure due to covid! I know it must be such a pain to weight and have to jump through all of these hoops! Good luck.
