Nikki T 708 got a reaction from FindYourFire in How do you handle the "How much have you lost" question?
I have no problem admitting how much I've lost, Im proud of every little evil pound I lose. Like many of you, I've told very few people outside of my family about the wls. When someone asks me how I lost the weight, I tell them the truth, well partially. I simply say a lot of hard work with assistance of a nutritionist. I think people tend to think wls is taking the easy way out. I'm here to say, and I am sure everyone of you will agree, this is the hardest thing I have ever done.

Sorry you feeling so bad, hope you are able to recover quickly. Keep pushing the liquids. Remember, small sips but even if you are not able to eat, you need to take in as much Fluid as you can. BTW you look great, keep up the hard work and feel better soon!

Reading through this whole thread...Honestly NY, you seem to have convinced yourself the sleeve won’t work. With that initial mindset, it probably won’t. Sorry, it sounds brutal, but attitude is half the battle. This is only a tool (whichever surgery). The real work is in the lifestyle change. That much is up to you. Your success or failure is YOUR choice. NOT the surgery.

K, I'm going to echo what was said by several posters: its not the surgery that dictates success, it's the individual.
I was sleeved over 2 years ago. I chose sleeve because:
The idea of re-routing my intestines freaked me out (but for some reason removing most of my stomach didn't. LOL) I wanted to keep my pyloric valve intact, as I was taking NSAIDS and another time-release med (but surprise, surprise I ended up not needing them anymore after surgery) I was scared of dumping syndrome (again, suprise, surprise, I dump anyway) I was NOT prone to GERD My surgeon was completely comfortable doing either surgery on me. I started off at a BMI of 43 (235 lbs). I got to goal of BMI 23 by 7 months post-op. Lost a few more pounds figuring out what my caloric level should be but finally settled into BMI 21, and have been maintaining my weight of 115 (+/- 5 lbs) for over a year and a half. I am 2 years, 3 months post op. I have stayed below my goal weight (more than 100% excess weight lost) the entire time.
I have read accounts from other sleever's and rNy'ers similar to mine. I have also read accounts from both sleever's and rNy'ers who reached goal and regained, or never reached goal at all....I also don't see an obvious co-relation of results to the type of surgery underwent. (On another note, I have to date only read of ONE person who was more than 2 years out who was under BMI 18 AND had difficulties keeping weight on...but I digress).
Barring any medical issues, so long as you maintain a caloric deficit, you should expect to lose the same amount of weight with either surgery.
    Good Luck!

Hey Arabesque, thank you for the kind words. It helps to hear from others that things will change- so the pains I feel now will change in the future. I actually woke up today feeling better. Which means I'm capable of feeling better even though I have forgotten that the last few days. That goes for all of us who are feeling **** right now... it'll ease!!

First, breathe. You can do this. The stress you are feeling won’t be helping & you’re likely holding a lot of tension in your body which will make things harder. I know you’re probably thinking that’s easy for you to say but we’ve all been where you are. My experience may not be exactly the same as yours but we all struggle at times in this journey.
It is hard. And it messes with your head & your body big time. Things are very different for you now. How you eat. What you eat. When you eat. Why you eat. Lots of changes & self reflection. But you can do this.
At the moment you are healing. You probably still have swelling. Give yourself time. Go slowly & accept some days may seem like a step backwards.
Yes. it’s very likely you’ll lose some hair. We naturally shed hair everyday. The surgery & reduced caloric intake speeds up the cycle & you’ll lose more than you usually would for about 2-4 months. (Can’t predict how much you’ll lose & how long it will persist.) It’s scary when it begins but it will stop and your hair does grow back. (There’s new growth happening even when you’re losing you just don’t notice it until there’s some length to it.)
And you’ll stall. It’s normal. Your body just needs to take a moment to catch up with the changes. Yes, you’ll suffer from Constipation & you’ll Celebrate on the days you do poop. You’ll also likely vomit at times cause your tummy just won’t like something. But it’s all ok. Of course if anything persists contact your medical team.
Sip & eat slowly. Follow your plan. Please, if you feel any pain or discomfort contact your medical team.
You made this decision for a reason: health, family, lifestyle, etc. It will all be worth it. Very soon you’ll reach your first non scale victory. It might be clothing being too big, walking further or more easily, blood pressure dropping...These are big wins.
There’s a wealth of support & experiences on this site. Never be afraid to ask for help or advice.
    Good luck on your journey.

I love blending frozen mangos and strawberries with greek yogurt the problem is it gives me sugar spike and makes me hungry. What other alternatives can use that doesn't have as many sugars. I don't like the texture of yogurt so it needs to be something frozen and with flavor

I'm doing fine (surgery on 9/21). Down 19 since surgery and 56 total, so feeling good about my progress. I have been pushing a bit too fast with eating foods I probably shouldn't, but my body lets me know right away. If I stick to the plan, I feel OK, other than being tired a lot. I'm over halfway to my goal, so I'm anxious to get there.

Sorry to hear about your pain. I had mine on 9/16 and I've had hardly any problems at all. I'm currently down 39lbs and am feeling pretty good.

Nikki T 708 reacted to MaybeMeow in Lesson: You'll waste food. Don't beat yourself up
Just throwing this out (pun intended) as it was something I really grappled with. I waste food now. And I was raised not to so it's been hard. But the bottom line is I've had to come to terms with it and let it be "no big deal". My work is the kind that often provides "Meals" as part of it's meetings etc. Which is lovely. No complaining here. But I have found that nearly every single time I end up throwing away more than half the meal. And quickly so people don't notice. I've tried to "save" it in a doggy bag for the next day and/or bring it home for the family. But the truth is... day-old Protein doesn't go down as well. Often too dry. And neither my hubs or the kiddo are eager for my leftovers.
So I've found myself hiding the food under a napkin until it is removed for me or I can sneak to a trash can. I used to feel this weight of guilt with the waste. Of course I order the smallest option offered. I did attempt in the beginning out of necessity eating my cottage cheese and tomatoes out of a tupperware during these meetings. It felt like a SPOTLIGHT ON MY DIET. But I did it until I could eat most foods. But now... I order like everyone else. And toss.
So, I guess my whole point of this post is to say... the moment I decided I wasn't going to beat myself up for the wasted food was the moment I felt a cloud pass that had been hanging over me for a while. It's a part of my journey. And if it's a part of yours too I'd like to encourage you to give yourself permission to not stress about it. As the months pass I find it happens less and less. That's a good thing. But I'm no longer worried about it. People don't talk about this much so I wanted to share. ONWARD!
