to sit in a chair and fit!
to get up from a chair and not have the chair come with me!
to get through a summer without experiencing heat rash!
to not leave sweat marks when I sit!
to fit in a turnstile without turning sideways!
to walk the length of a medical center without requiring admission!
I post this because I am about three weeks away from surgery and I had to travel unexpectedly. I welcomed this trip because it reminded me just how much my weight is hurting me. Can not wait to be on the other side of this. 😀

    I can't wait to
    - Go shopping with friends and be able to try on clothes in the same stores as them
    - Sit comfortably with my legs crossed
    - Pass unnoticed through the city, buy groceries and go to the fitness center without being stared or snickered at
    - To go to the GP with a cough or a backpain and not have the conversation be about my weight
    - Not spending parties and family events constantly alert and moving around to avoid cameras

I’m going to ask if the doctor has a therapist that I can work with on these issues. Even if I do it at the same time as the surgery. I have the insight info the issue so that’s a plus in my favor. Maybe it’s as simple as staying in the moment instead of surrendering to blindly looking for comfort. I’m highly motivated to succeed so maybe that will have a positive impact on my ability to overcome these issues.

Okay well I sat down and went over every concern that I have with myself. I did a pros and cons listened to a podcast that gave the specifics of when to choose one surgery versus the other. I have decided that because I am pre-diabetic with family history of type 2 diabetes and strong history or heart disease and a genetic disorder that pre-disposes me to increased clotting, that gastric bypass will be the prudent choice in the long run. I do have reflux but it’s mild at the moment. I don’t want to chance it getting worse. Thank you all for your responses. I’m so glad I have people to discuss this with in the middle of the night!

recovery from both surgeries is about the same. I've never seen any anecdotes about recovery from sleeve being easier than recovery from bypass.
bypass: statistically, bypassers lose more weight, but we're talking a few lbs, and besides, those are just averages. Some sleevers lose a lot more than bypassers, and vice versa. It comes down to the individual and how committed they are to their plan. There are people on here who've been wildly successfully with both surgeries, and people who have failed both surgeries. It comes down to commitment. If you stick to the rules, you'll lose the weight.
weight loss is faster with bypass, but not by that much. And they equal out after a few months. If you have a significant amount of weight to lose, you're going to have loose skin no matter how fast or slow the weight comes off and no matter which surgery you have. I don't think it makes a difference at all which surgery you have when it comes to loose skin.
there is malabsorption of Vitamins with the bypass, but deficiencies are rare as long as you keep on top of your vitamins (you'll have to take vitamins with the sleeve as well) (p.s. the malabsorption that Mikey mentioned - the malabsorption of calories with the bypass - that is temporary. Lasts maybe two years tops. Your system gets smart and at some point is able to suck every calorie out of whatever food you eat again. I'm talking here about malabsorption of vitamins. That is permanent, but if you keep on top of your vitamins, you're very unlikely to have problems with this)
only about 30% of bypassers dump, so don't count on that happening. I, unfortunately, have no trouble at all eating sugar. I wish I did, but...no.
sleeve - I'm not sure why people think this surgery is less "drastic", although many do think this. Cutting out 80% of your stomach and throwing it on the garbage doesn't seem much less radical to me than sectioning off your stomach with staples and moving your small intestine up. They're both pretty radical...
stomach stretching - this actually isn't very common, from what I've read. If it happens, it's due to chronic overeating - day after day of overstuffing your stomach. Which hopefully you would not do after going through something as drastic as surgery. We all have our days, but you'd have to really work at stretching your stomach.
the only things that really should be strongly considered when making a decision is if you have health issues that would make one surgery more appropriate than the other. If you have GERD, go with bypass. If you have diabetes - well, either surgery can help with that, but the bypass tends to be more effective with putting it into remission. Otherwise....??? It really comes down to personal choice.
as far as your past eating disorders go, if you're still dealing with those, or are worried about those coming back, therapy is the best way to deal with that. Surgery doesn't really help with that. There are many bariatric patients who work with therapists, and there's nothing wrong with that!!

Mate the malabsorption is the whole reason for the bypass. I've lost weight so QUICKLY and still losing weight in maintenance mode without even trying and that is only because of the bypass...

You will be fine to travel by train 4-6 weeks after surgery! You would be fine to do it 2 weeks after if you wanted to do so.
    Good luck!!!

Last Meal Syndrome hit me hard a couple weeks ago. I was eating all my favorite foods like it was my last time ever having them. I finally got myself under control by reminding myself what I was losing weight for and looked at my wall of quotes to get me back in my rhythm.
"Don't give up what you want the most for what you want in the moment." and "Remember your dreams are as hungry as your demons. Make sure your feeding the right ones." Are my favorite quotes. It also helps to have boss baby on my door.

You will do this! I’m not a psychologist... that being said I really believe the effectiveness of our journeys are mostly set post op. This surgery is a tool - a powerful one - to give us the time AND restrictions to allow any of us the ability to learn new habits. These are the facts: you will have a few weeks of little to no food, low calorie intake, weight loss. You will have a long period of very significant restriction compared to your preop capacity. You will see enough weight loss to know these changes work. The length of time these things last IS enough time to learn and incorporate new habits into a lifetime solution. The line between pre and post op is so significant that the old ways (to me at least) are completely irrelevant. Some will not make it, but I honestly believe our errors or lapses before 0-Day do not predominantly define our success or failure post op.
I had some food funerals the first couple days after getting my date set but I ended up starting my pre op diet early, then I had one more food funeral and I didn’t enjoy it at all, got back on the program. I’m four weeks post op today, down 37 lbs. I don’t regret my food funerals, but I also do not think “oh I wish I had this or that one more time.” Healthy small portions taste amazing. My tastes have changed, my outlook on the future has changed, I don’t crave garbage, I’m so excited when I get full on such tiny amounts of food. I know I’m capable of popping a donut hole every hour and sabotaging all of this, but for the first time in my life of yo yo dieting I truly truly feel like I’m in complete control and capable and willing to make better choices. I used to self sabotage without conscious thought... like I was some robot with a self destruct sequence always running in the background. That’s gone. I’m rambling (I tend to do that, sorry) but you can do this. This is such an amazing gift you’re giving yourself.

It's normal to be panicing at a time like that. You dont know if you will be able to eat those things again and it sends ur mind into a spin. I was there too...
BUT I can tell you, that you will very likely still be able to eat those things again in the future once you've gotten past the surgery and weight loss. I still love to eat chocolate and such but have learned when I need to be careful and what I absolutely cant eat (which isnt much tbh). Even after a year after surgery, Im still learning things, but I dont feel like Im missing anything at all.
So deep breaths and dont think of it as jumping off a cliff. Cuz ur not!

That sounds like a wise decision. You are having breakthrough pain. Bring your full list of medication to the attention of the pain management doctor. You should also have a new gi workup. Could be something happening that is decreasing absorption. Another option is to cross reference your meds with your pharmacist to make sure you aren’t taking anything that impairs absorption.

You probably should see a pain management specialist. It could be an absorption issue.
