What actually makes the liver shrink?
Intermittent fasting not very good for preop. I don't know any surgeon who would recommend it. There are some very good tasting protein shakes. Have you tried Fairlife Nutrition Chocolate. Tastes just like chocolate milk. I really hated Premiere Protein shakes and most powder-based shakes. You will need lots of protein (60-80g per day) after surgery so best you find one you like and start using now.

Low BMR after bariatric surgery
I have faithfully logged all my intake. I live alone so nothing in my house to cheat on. Been meeting my protein and water requirements from day one. Still drinking protein shakes twice a day to get my protein goal.

Low BMR after bariatric surgery
I don't see where to put my profile. My highest weight was 245. BMI 44. My weight on day of surgery was 211. My weight on postop visit was 200. Seemed to take a long time to make 199. For 3 weeks I have been between 196-198. I have lost inches down to size 16 jeans from size 20. I had VSG on May 28 so one month out. I lost 11 pounds within 10 days of surgery. But then stalled with caloric intake 400-500 calories per day. I have been lifting 3 lbs weights to build up biceps hoping to minimize bat wings. I easily lost 30 pounds before surgery. And have been walking 30 minutes 4 times a week. Been frustrating to see plus 1 lbs and minus 1 pound for 3 weeks. I just started soft stage yesterday after 2 weeks pureed stage.

All I want to do is cheat on my diet
You can make zucchini "pasta". Thinly sliced with mandolin makes it easy. Make your own tomato sauce unless you can find some sugar-free.

Low BMR after bariatric surgery
Approximately 40% of patients struggle with their weight loss rate, or metabolic rate, after bariatric surgery, and at least 30% previously had or develop a low metabolic rate after surgery. Metabolic rate is the speed at which calories are burned. Explains why I easily lost weight before surgery but have only lost 3 pounds since. Also, my age decreases BMR. I am switching to caffienated coffee to help boost my BMR.

Gas Pain!!!
Try using a heating pad. It helps and is comforting. Did you receive the little breathing toy you blow in and keep the little ball up (spirometer)? Using it frequently requires you to take deep breath before blowing. This pulls your diaphragm down and helps moves the gas around. It is really supposed to prevent pneumonia but found this suggestion elsewhere and found this helpful.

I want to succeed
Gas is part of everyone's experience. Some get over it faster than others. We are all different. Some of the things you can do to help is walk around often, take Gas_X or baby drops for colic. A heating pad can be comforting. Did you get a little breathing toy where you blow to make little ball stay up (spirometer). Blowing into this frequently will bring your diaphragm down when you take deep breath before you blow. This helps move the gas around. I found it quite helpful. As far as your care providers being seemingly uncaring, you are not describing anything unusual. Do as much as you can to help yourself. Then providers won't get the impression you will be chronic problem. There are a number of protein shakes that are lactose free. If lactose is bothering you, try Fairlife Nutrition or Premiere Protein as premixed. I understand your fear of vomiting. Almost makes me faint. But if you are very careful, sipping slowly and stop before you feel full, it is less likely you will feel nauseous or vomit. I'm sorry you lack support. You might find this forum helpful.

Struggling with head games
If your doctor doesn't want you to lose anymore weight, you need to listen to her advice. Your all or nothing thinking could suggest you have developed an unhealthy mindset about starch (bread, pasta, rice). Complex carbohydrates are an important source of delayed energy. Simple carbs give you quick energy but complex carbs breakdown more slowly and will maintain energy longer. One approach is to limit your diet to whole grain bread, pasta and nonwhite rice. These contain important vitamins and especially phytonutrients you can't get in a pill or other foods. If you are not crazy about whole grain carbs, that might help you with your fear that you might start eating too much. You have been phenomenal by losing all excess weight. I am confident you can approach starch in moderation.

Liquid and Food - timing issues
No drinking 30 minutes before or during meal has specifically been explained that liquid will delay the feeling of satiety or fullness. Then you will consume more food/liquid than your stomach can handle and discomfort will happen. I take my meds/pills with my protein shake so no need for additional liquid needed. Drinking liquids within 30 minutes after meal usually is on top of an already full stomach once eating other than liquid food. I did that once and immediately experienced felt nauseous and vomited with immediate relief of nausea and discomfort. And I didn't vomit all contents of stomach but just the liquid I just drank.

No pounds lost in two weeks
My surgeon says no more than 50g of TOTAL CARBS per day. So if I eat high fiber foods like beans, I cannot use net carbs to stay under 50g total carbs per day. I do not understand why total carbs instead of net carbs because I really cannot eat anything high fiber without going over 50g total carbs.

No pounds lost in two weeks
Did some research and now understand the physiology of "3 week stall." Most of us were on liver shrink diets two weeks before surgery. Our livers were depleted of glycogen stores and excess omentum fat. So my liver is rebuilding liver back to normal functioning size. So I need to get back on my pureed diet with more calories to finish up this process and start losing weight again.

No pounds lost in two weeks
I am 3 weeks postop VSG. I lost 40 pounds before surgery and about 6 pounds first week after surgery. So frustrated that I weight just goes up and and down by about a pound but not lost anything in last two weeks. I am religiously logging all food and water. I am supposed to be on pureed food but have gone back to just three protein shakes a day (150 cal each) and nothing else but water. I am walking my dog 30 minutes every day which I couldn't do before due to low back pain. With increased activity and low intake of calories why am I not losing any weight? Mystery to me. There is no food in house except protein shakes so I am obviously not cheating. I heard of "three week stall" but this started one week postop.

Nervous about post-op energy levels...
I had normal energy, was able to drink all my fluids and protein shakes. Took dog for walk every day. Never really felt hungry but sometimes gurgling in stomach can feel like growling stomach from hunger but it's not.

Starting pureed food for two weeks
FOODS ALLOWED ALL FOODS pureed TO BABY CONSISTENCY MUST STRAIN EVERYTHING No Peanut Butter or nuts No real butter No raw fruits or veggies (so no bananas) No bread or crackers No hard cheeses (low fat soft cheeses ok) No dairy listed except skim milk (yogurt not mentioned) No carbonated or soft drinks No alcohol No Kool-aid or sweet tea Nothing sweetened with sugar No fruit or veggie juices with pulp or added sugar 3 meals per day with supplemental Protein Shake between to get Protein Tonight I opened can of Progresso Clam Chowder. Thinned with skim milk and pureed with blender stick and strained it. All the clam bits down the drain.

Starting pureed food for two weeks
Had first puree yesterday. Canned tuna with a little lite mayo and whipped it up food processor. Went down easy without any issues but definitely felt the restriction for first time. Plan to try egg salad, sardines, canned chicken, and avocado instead of mayo and ricotto bake. Will continue with protein shakes to get in all my protein. After weeks just liquids, this will be great change.

Should have waited for Fecal Transplant
CDIFF is cured in 90% of patients with fecal transplant. Interesting case in UK. A woman with serious CDIFF and close to dying. They suggested fecal transplant and that results were better if came from close relative. It saved her life but she quickly started gaining weight. Her cousin donor was obese and the transplant transferred some bacteria that was associated with obesity. So now doing better job a pre-screening donors. Most of serotonin used by the brain is made in the gut. That may explain why depression after WLS is common. Less serotonin being made and available to the brain.

Anyone taking a probiotic?

Incontinence greatly improved
Thrilled to have lost enough weight that I can now avoid incontinence issues. Haven't had accident in over a week. A new life for sure.

Anyone taking a probiotic?
I started home fermentation of veggies, a wonderful source of Probiotics. I have 2 jars of baby dill pickles, one jar of ginger carrot sticks, one jar of okra and one jar of Italian Giardeneia bubbling on kitchen counter. Can't wait to make sauerkraut. Can't eat any of these yet because won't be on normal foods for 4 more weeks but can save them in fridge to enjoy then. One serving of fermented veggies has 100x probiotics than an entire bottle of expensive probiotics. And a jar of home fermented veggies make great gifts.

Artificial sweetners just as bad as sugar
Has your dietician approved pea protein shakes? Pea protein is inferior protein.

Artificial sweetners just as bad as sugar
Postop diet is specifically to allow stomach to heal. Your ptotein shake is your most important food right now. Avoid vegetable juice right now. Has fiber which can get caught in staples. I am sticking to protein shakes sweetened with monk fruit and stevia. A little Sucralose at this point doesn't bother me.

My VSG pouch too big?
Surgeon said drinking fluids should be easy for most. The problems start cropping up as increase from puree to soft to normal food. That is when chewing food a lot becomes really important.
