I'm thinking from the sound of it, I might be allergic to anything ending in "mite."

Jenni L reacted to DrSchaffner in Why did you choose the surgery you had/will have?
This is a great pre-op question! Each individual has to choose for him or herself, of course. Here was how I ultimately arrived at bypass for my choice.
After learning about each procedure, I originally decided that I would have gastric sleeve. I have arthritis in my knee from an old sports injury and I was taking an NSAID for it—which you cannot take with bypass due to the high likelihood of ulcers. I also wanted a lower likelihood of dumping syndrome. After talking with my PCP, however, I changed my choice to bypass for a few reasons.
First, after losing over 100 pounds to date pre-op I have been able to manage my arthritis with over-the-counter medications. Second, thinking of surgery as one tool in the weight loss toolbox, bypass is likely to result in a higher percentage of weight loss than sleeve. Last but not least, I want surgery to work as a tool to help me sustain my weight loss when I hit my goal weight. My PCP has had many patients who received sleeves require dilation and, in some cases, extension of their sleeves to bypasses. She also shared that the dumping syndrome that comes with bypass serves as a good long-term deterrent to overeating.
I am having bypass surgery on Monday, February 24th. I plan to continue to post both pre- and post-surgery, so more to come!

My laparoscopic RYN surgery is scheduled for February and I’ve been thinking about what it will be like post surgery. I would love to hear your perspectives on the topics below:
Did you have a drainage tube or catheter in the hospital? No
Did you have to go home with a drainage tube? No
Were you able to sleep on your stomach when you came home? If no, how long was it until you could? No, but I can sleep on my side. It's been a week since my surgery and one incision is still tender. I'm a stomach sleeper, but I have been sleeping fine on my back or side. Your body will adjust.
I’ve heard people recommend having a pillow for your stomach? Does that help if your surgery was laparoscopic? No pillow for me.
And last but not least...is there anything you wish you would have known about what you would experience after surgery. Being on these forums, having a great team, and having two close friends having the surgery prepared me well for what to expect. The hardest part is smelling what my husband cooks. I've decided to go upstairs while he's eating. But, I keep telling myself that in a month I'll be able to eat normal again, albeit very small portions. I'm also still surprised at the fact that I CAN'T eat everything I intend. Last night, I attempted to eat yogurt and could only get through 3 oz. That's still weird to me!

I agree with above posters. Why lie, if someone asks just say, "I had surgery," and leave it at that. If someone asks for details just stand there staring at them and say nothing. They will become uncomfortable and either change the subject or walk away. Put the onus on them for invading your privacy. If the have a decent sense of humor you could tell them that you cannot discuss it due to HIPAA privacy laws 😉

I went to my appointment today at 9:30 and just got home the appointment started off with a weight check and they also checked my temperature. After they did that I was taken to a classroom with there was another person who also has a January surgery scheduled. In that class they showed us a video on vertical sleeve gastrectomy. After the video they sent in a dietitian and a nurse to talk to us and sign paperwork. The dietitian talk to us about the diet we need to start two weeks before surgery and also what our diets will look like after surgery. The nurse talked about medications we need a take before and after surgery and also talked about the hospital we would be staying at. After the dietitian and the nurse spoke to us we each went into a room and waited to speak to the surgeon. This is the time where if you have any questions you would want to ask them. After talking to my surgeon she sent me to hospital to take a urine sample because I was a former smoker I guess they actually have a test where they test you for nicotine. It was a really long appointment with a lot of overwhelming information thrown at you. I actually thought they were going to do more test like x-rays or bloodwork but they didn’t. But I will have a physical done by my primary care doctor on the 14th so I’m guessing that’s when they’re going to do the bloodwork and the tests. I hope this information helps others! I am so nervous and so very excited to be a part of this group!!!

Did you have to go home with a drainage tube? -No

Were you able to sleep on your stomach when you came home? If no, how long was it until you could? -No, it hurt to. I am 6 days out and still can’t. But I can sleep on my side.
I’ve heard people recommend having a pillow for your stomach? Does that help if your surgery was laparoscopic? - yes. Have extra pillows. Even if it’s so you can stay propped up comfortably in your own bed. This was the best advice someone gave me.
And last but not least...is there anything you wish you would have known about what you would experience after surgery. - I wish I would have known about all the emotions I would experience after surgery. It was a dark time for me this first week. Mourning is very real and not being able to eat real food plays with you! My best advice is exactly what everyone says, walk. It really helped me recharge myself.

Were you able to sleep on your stomach when you came home? If no, how long was it until you could? My Dr. said I could but it wasn't comfortable
I’ve heard people recommend having a pillow for your stomach? Does that help if your surgery was laparoscopic? I brought my pillow to use in the hospital but didn't need it for the trip home
And last but not least...is there anything you wish you would have known about what you would experience after surgery. I wish someone would have told me that it's normal to mourn the way I used to be able to eat a lot. For example going out to a nice dinner or Thanksgiving and not being able to eat more than a few bites and being a little sad about it. It does get better with time and soon you'll adjust to a new normal and will be happy that you can only take a few bites and now have control over your eating......Good luck!

Were you able to sleep on your stomach when you came home? If no, how long was it until you could? No. Can't remember - maybe three weeks or so? (I rarely sleep on my stomach, though. I'm a side sleeper - although I had to sleep on my back the first couple of weeks)
I’ve heard people recommend having a pillow for your stomach? Does that help if your surgery was laparoscopic? A lot of us use it on the ride home in case the car goes over bumps.

Not really, I hung out on internet forums like this one starting several months before surgery, so I felt pretty prepared. Plus my clinic did a good job of preparing us, too.

Hey guys decided I would post some pics and my story. I’m Mike and I’m 37 from Montreal. Waited a full 5 years to get this surgery. Best decision I ever made.

Surgery was Nov. 22, 2018 and I’ve since lost over 180 lbs! I work out 6 times a week; cardio, swimming and various exercises.

let me know what you think!

    mike
