In all that huge pile of permissions/acknowledgments/etc. that we sign before surgery, there should be one form, typed in huge block letters, that says "please sign below to indicate that you have been told that your scale is a b***h!" Then that page should be framed and hung above the scale.
You are losing fat. You have to be. You're not eating enough to keep a good-sized gerbil happy. However, on the grand platform of hormones, swelling, Fluid retention, and just plain contrariness, the scale isn't showing it right now. If you haven't already, please take your measurements! There is hardly ever a time where you don't lose either pounds or inches! Having a second source of confirmation helps to keep you from getting discouraged. ((hugs))

Just about 12 hours until surgery. Check in at 5:30, surgery about 7:30. Hope I can get some sleep!
Good luck to other 3/11 buddies and those following right behind us!

I just got home yesterday from my March 7 surgery. Everything went well, no issues. Took me until today to finally fart, which had me worried. I’m incredibly thankful I didn’t run into any problems. I did not tell my family about my surgery, so having it go smoothly was a godsend for many reasons! I’ve pretty much just been sleeping, which I don’t think is unusual... I don’t have an appetite for food, but I am thankful for popsicles (I like being able to chew a bit!).
i hope everyone else has had a safe surgery so far! ❤️

I'm a teacher too, so I totally understand the hesitation to take off during the year. You have to do what's best for you though! Your students deserve a teacher who's healthy and happy. I just started the process in February, so I was planning on surgery in June, but I decided if I end up being able to get in sooner, I will. I need it for me. Good luck!

I could have waited till we got out mid/late June, but part if me is like, I've been on hold since December...enough is enough! And I'm also like, These are my benefits, I don't get vacation pay, this is my life, I'm not wasting a chunk of my only break to recover! (Which, again childish/guilt inducing/**how I should feel!! I'm working on it**)...idk. They gave me that date, and part if me was just, If I don't take this, something will happen, and it will never get done.

Then 5 mins went by, and my aggro OCD kicked in, and panic ensued [emoji23] It will get to be okay. My Type A spirit beast has already started making lists, which is very calming.

I'm so excited to have an almost surgery twin!!

The truth is none of us can definitively answer this for you. None of us know your pain tolerance or energy level or healing speed.
My respectful suggestion to have a Plan B in case you don't feel up to performing yet.
Good luck! You are not alone.

I agree with sheribear. This is YOUR time and you have to do what's right for you but on a side note if doing it June would bring you less stress then maybe that's also a consideration? For me and maybe you feel this way as well...I didn't want to wait to start my new life. I do think that once other teachers see the newer happier healthier you they will be nothing but happy for you. Also on a selfish note I've been looking for a surgery twin and you'd be the closest lol! I'm the day before you! I really hope you get a little piece of mind through all of this soon so that you can enjoy what you have earned. [emoji173]

    Thank you for your response.
My aversion to dating overweight people is not aesthetic. I’m concerned if I’m around someone who eats poorly or is inactive, I’ll begin to eat poorly or be inactive. Obesity is socially contagious, and much of my success has been due to being single in the first place - I didn’t need to be around unhealthy food for anyone else’s sake. I’m actually impressed with those who did have to be around unhealthy food and yet still succeeded. I don’t think I could have.

Jezzabelle360 reacted to YeahOkay31 in BMI Goal: is your BMI goal to be healthy or overweight?
I think you have to remember that one person's mediocre is another person's star in the sky. As much as people like to say around here that everyone's journey is the same, it just isn't. Some folks have a much longer road to hoe. Some folks around here are starting at a BMI of 60, so even getting to a BMI of 35 (class 1 obesity) is their goal. And for a person who has a very petite height like you--that is still 120 pounds! That's an incredible success.
Goals are one of those personal things, so I think this OP just needs to look inside themselves and sees what they define as success. Not look for others definitions (if that is what they are doing--they just might want small talk). I just don't want people to poo-poo their accomplishments!

Jezzabelle360 reacted to Diana_in_Philly in BMI Goal: is your BMI goal to be healthy or overweight?
BMI is so screwed up. I'm down about 150 pounds. I weight 152. (I started over 300). I have not had plastics and would probably lose about 15 from that. However, according to the BMI chart, I'm overweight - I wouldn't be "healthy" (and at the high edge of it) until I hit 140. I know what I look like at 140 and I look stupid. (I'm very busty.)
That being said - I can deadlift 250 pounds, back squat 235 pounds. I'm ranked no. 24 nationally among women aged 50-59 fencing foil and no. 33 nationally among women over 40 fencing foil.
I wear small or medium tops and size 6 pants. I'm a lot of solid muscle and most folks think I weigh 125. BMI does not take into account mass from muscle and that muscle weighs more than fat.
I think I look damn fine right where I am.

My goal is to be healthy and achieve a weight that I can maintain for life. When I was in my teens and twenties, I was considered overweight for my height. I was 120 lbs, my doctor wasn't concerned because I was very athletic. Ran track, weight lifting etc. I had a lot of muscle. Gone now!! As I get closer to goal, I'll discuss this with my MD.

I'm sorry that people have been telling you horror stories. From what I understand from friends who have had gastric bypass, the first few weeks post op are hard and you may feel like you wish you didn't have the surgery. But those feelings pass as you feel better and see the progress. Then you're glad you did it and you feel more confident and motivated. I'm sure you're going to do great!

It really depends on the program how restrictive your pre-surgery diet is. In my program, the surgeon explained that it's primary purpose was to shrink the liver to make access to the surgery site easier. They have to lift the liver to work underneath it and a fatty liver is more fragile and susceptible to damage during the lifting. You are helping to ensure the least possible risk of complications during surgery by following your pre-surgery diet to the letter.
The pre-surgery diet is essentially a Keto diet made simple through the use of very low carb shakes (in my case, Optifast 900). As your body goes into ketosis, it burns fat stores for energy. Physiologically, you body burns fat from the liver first as it's easiest to access. Ketosis is an on or off thing, and when switched off, takes a day or two to get started again. If you provide your body with any other carb source (simple or complex), ketosis gets switched off.
The salad wouldn't make any difference, unless there was cheese or fruit or dressing on it. The chilli however, while usually a great healthy choice, contains lots of complex carbs from the Beans and would have stopped ketosis. On a keto diet, you can not have any legumes for this reason.
Not to be a stick in the mud, but every single instruction you will receive on how or what to eat has a reason behind it that will contribute to the best possible outcomes from your procedure. It sounds harsh, but each time you cheat, your outcomes get a teeny bit worse.
Good luck with your procedure - you're going to do great!
