Recidivist reacted to Smanky in How did I get to this weight?
My golden rule is: Don't beat yourself up, but do take accountability and work to change it. I ate myself into 130kg. There were certainly external factors that influenced it - I used to turn to cigarettes in times of stress, and in the long process of quitting, turned to food instead. Got addicted to sugar. I have an addictive personality, so I'm prone to it.
I regret getting myself there. I felt horrible, and hit really low points in the year before my surgery. It's not a nice place to be. BUT - I did take charge, I did make the steps towards my last option to fix it with getting my bypass. I'm responsible for my obesity, but I won't beat myself up about it. We're human, we make mistakes, some of them affect our health, but there's nothing that self-flagellation can fix. Instead, embrace the steps to change, and cheer yourself on.
Your first appointment towards fixing yourself is a big step in taking yourself back - be happy with yourself for taking it! xx

Thanks so much for sharing your story! We hear so seldom from people so long after their surgery, and it's particularly good to hear from someone who managed to keep the weight off. So sorry to hear about your kidney issues, however--and thanks for letting us know what can happen. Wishing you the best.

Exercise has very little to do with how much weight you lose, or how quickly. The only exercise I did for nearly a year was walking and my weight loss was very successful.
Stalls at about the 12-week mark are very common, as you will see when you read the posts here. It's nothing to worry about. As long as you are sticking with the program recommended by your doctor and nutritionist, the weight loss will come. Just be patient. (Easier said than done, I know.)

So good to hear about the success. Overall I am good, but I cannot say my diet is the healthiest. I find eating carbs to be way too easy to digest and my sedentary life style working home all day in front of a computer doesn't help. I am depressed that it seems way too easy to eat more food now, such as whole (store-bought) burrito in one sitting, or two pieces of pizza instead of just one, or a fairly large salad. My little egg-sized stomach has definitely stretched. 😞 I also starting drinking Diet Coke in the morning. For three years I didn't touch it, but recently I starting drinking the mini Cokes--only one in the morning--and was surprised there were no repercussions, so that is my indulgence when I start my work day. Unfortunately, the Girl Scout Cookies also seem to be digesting all too well. I did undergo a panniculectomy and a breast reduction and feel so much better since I did that. The relentless neck pain from carrying the weight of the breasts and the back ache from the stomach skin pretty much disappeared. My arms and thighs are still scary large and saggy but I just don't think I have the bravery to do another plastic surgery. It was rough!
One very upsetting side effect (other than I still have thinning hair) are that I have had four kidney stones since last May. Dr. Google confirmed that there is a correlation between gastric bypass and an increase in kidney stones. They are crippling, and from what I understand, an intake of animal Protein is partly to blame. I absolutely need to consciously drink more Water so would LOVE to hear y'all's tips and tricks for remembering to drink water!

    Hello February 2019 peeps!
I’m doing okay. Gained 15 back from my all-time low, but maintaining within a 5-ish pound window now for about the last 15 months.
Some days I wonder if I should try to get back into the 130’s ( I dropped all the way down to 133 at one point) but I’m hanging in the upper 140’s and feel like this is maintainable.
For me, 2022 has been dubbed “The Year of the Foot” as I’ve already had one bunionectomy and will be having my left foot done next month. I was very happy to only gain 2 pounds in the 7 weeks I laid on my butt all day long with foot elevated.
So here is me at 147 at my daughters wedding reception on March 5th. I was rocking a size small dress and- of course- my walking boot.
I’m super excited to say that on May 10th I will be having plastics!! I’ve saved up and will be having a TT with flank Lipo and a thigh lift.
We are going to piggy-back it 3 weeks after foot surgery so I can minimize my time off work.
Hope everyone is well. I miss you guys.

    Hello,
I totally understand. I never actually got to my ideal weight ( I was about 8 pound away). Now it is more like 28 pounds away.
No excuses, I know better. I am still amazed at how quickly I can STILL gain weight!
Not really looking forward to the doctors visit.
WE CAN DO THIS! We will get it together.

Tomorrow is my three-year anniversary. I stayed at my goal weight pretty easily for the first 18 months but gained about 20 pounds over the past year. I'm eating the same things as I did during the first year, but more of them. My diet is still high Protein, low carb, low fat, and no sugar (or alcohol).
I'm satisfied with my current weight, but now I really need to be careful to make sure I don't creep up. It's definitely harder than it was during the first 18 months or so, but I'll never go back to my old way of eating (nor anywhere near my previous weight).

Recidivist got a reaction from LilaNicole20 in Can I see some before and after pics?
Okay, I'll play along! I don't have a "before" pic that really represents how big I was, because I generally avoided being photographed back then. My before is from a chorus concert I did--and I will admit that I was wearing a "man girdle" at the time. (Cringe.)
I went from 250 to a low of 132 before bouncing back up to 142.

Recidivist got a reaction from qianmij in When did you get back to exercise?
To be honest, I never went back to "exercise." All I've really done since surgery is walk, and I didn't even do much of that for about a month after surgery due to extreme fatigue. I now try to walk every day, but that's it--no cardio or weight training--and I've done very well in terms of weight loss. Diet is by far the most important component of weight loss, not exercise.

The same happened to me. I ended up 18 pounds below my goal weight before I stopped losing. Honestly, I looked a little skeletal, and I posted here at that time that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to stop losing weight. Well, I did--and I gained 15 pounds. I stabilized there and have been able to maintain without too much work for the past year.

Mine was almost yellow for quite a while after my surgery, and there were no issues as far as I'm aware. It did get back to normal eventually.

It's not so much that they didn't read labels but that they didn't really understand what my dietary needs were. They kept saying I should eat salad and vegetables because they were low in calories, whereas I needed to prioritize Protein. It was frustrating when other people thought they knew better than I did what I should and shouldn't be eating.
