ABawdyMermaid reacted to AlteredReality in Stomach spasms turned out to be an ulcer
A couple of days ago, I posted about the horrible pain I was dealing with. I thought I was having stomach spasms. Well the pain got so bad today along with the vomiting, that I just couldn't even take it anymore. So I decided to take a trip to the emergency room. They did a CT scan and ultrasound, they saw that my gall bladder was distended and that I had an ulcer where my small intestine and new stomach connected. They decided to do an endoscopy and found that I had a 2 inch ulcer and admitted me to the hospital to start immediate treatment. My advice is if you feel like something isn't right within your body, get some medical help as soon as possible...Don't procrastinate

ABawdyMermaid reacted to RinRin in Hospital Visit / Follow Up to My Jan 28th Post
The last time I was on here was January 28th. Be ready for a long, long post.
To recap, I was having some insane nausea, being unable to really eat or drink. On the Jan 25th, I had gone to the ER for fluids and then was able to go home. I had a CAT Scan, Ultrasound, HIDA scan, and Barium swallow test to make sure it was not my gallbladder needing to be removed and not any blockages that were causing issues. I have some gallbladder sludge, but my surgeon said he didn’t think it was the issue when I saw him on the 28th. They just told me to take my anti nausea meds (that were not working) and eat and drink what I could.
On the Jan 27th, I started staying with my mom, who had the bypass done about 13 years ago and had nausea issues and vomiting for the first year. It got worse and worse. I hadn’t eaten in almost 7 days at this point and was just dry heaving all day.
My mom brought me back to the ER Thursday (the 31st) because a single sips of Water started making me sick.
Long story short, I was admitted to the hospital that day and the following weekend was awful because none of the nausea meds helped at all and I was on fluids AND potassium via IV and it made me unable to sleep because of the constant dry heaving from it.
They put in a PICC line started me on TPN on Feb 6th. For the first time in two weeks, I hadn’t dry heaved or thrown up, I was able to talk, I was texting friends and my boyfriend, and responding to Facebook posts.
The doctors think I may have gotten a sinus infection around the 24th because I have had a lot of post nasal drip, which they think was causing some of the nausea. I also don’t eat much when sick, so I don’t think I even realized what was happening (since I can’t eat a lot anyway) and was most likely missing a bunch of nutrition.
I was finally discharged on Feb 8th. I was in the hospital for 8 days. I had a home health care nurse and was on TPN until Feb 12th. I finally saw my bloodwork and I was 1 point away from being severely malnourished when I was admitted.
I finally had the PICC line removed yesterday. After being at my mom’s for 3 weeks (including that 1 week in the hospital, I finally came home to my boyfriend yesterday. I found a Protein Drink I like (called Rockin Protein Builder. 30g of protein, tastes like a freaking milkshake. I think it’s a little high in sugar, but I’m able to handle it. I’m able to eat some solid foods and drink water and the G2 Gatorade. I’m hopefully going back to work Monday, hopefully half days so I can make sure my eating schedule will be okay during 11 hour shifts.
New post surgery friends and ever pre surgery ones, please please please don’t wait like I did. Take super good care of yourselves. I was not taking my medications, was severely depressed and didn’t even realize I was sick with a sinus infection. Please reach out to people who care about you, especially your mom if you can, because hopefully they will do whatever they can to help you like mine did.

She has talked with her doctor numerous times and everyone is aware of the condition. Her surgeon passed away. She had to be operated on within 3 days of her gastric bypass for an ulcer. After she got out of the hospital she was on a feeding tube for over 6 months. And now she is rail thin and feeble because nothing stays down, except chips and junk food like that. I am having surgery on Monday, Dec 31 and this is the only thing that scares me. My surgeon has assured me this is not a normal thing and that heredity should not play a part in this but I'm still a little concerned about it.

Sleeved Aug 15. Can't tolerate eggs no matter how they are prepared, tuna, most meat. Frustrating since they are high in Protein which is what I'm supposed to need focusing on post surgery. Unfortunately I learned that chips, ice cream, Cookies, cake, candy go down just fine. Arrghhh.

My mom had the bypass surgery years ago and after even after all these years she keeps very little food down. She can keep chips down but no salad or chicken or any kind of meat. There are so few foods she can eat. This scares me. I’m wondering if any of you find you can’t hold down a lot of healthy foods.

I love spicy foods. I make great spicy curries often so I don't have to think about what I'm taking for work for lunches. I can handle the heat of a curry or taco, but I tried some jalapeno cheese last night and it was too hot. I'm not quite 5 months in, so maybe it's a matter of time before you get used to spices again.

My personal rule, 2.5 years out, is no more than 10 g of sugar, unless its at Breakfast, 15g. (All bets are off if the sugar is from fruit - I'm talking about processed sugar.)

ABawdyMermaid reacted to sohappyitsgone in 11 weeks post op and only lost 10 pound
So frustrated and depressed. It’s been 11 weeks - first two weeks I lost 9 pound. Went back a month later for check up and lost 1.8 pound. Last two weeks nothing. Dietician told me that I am not eating enough so I tried to eat more and put on two pounds. I see videos on YouTube of other people at 11-12 weeks being 40-60 pounds down and talking about only being able to eat five small bites. I don’t seem to have that restriction at all and could eat a full meal if unwanted but just nothing tastes good anymore. Can’t eat yoghurt or milk as it makes me sick now. Just nothing tastes like anything anymore. I cooked a huge pot of cabbage and chicken broth and basically live in that. But still not losing. Just feel so depressed and that this was such a waste of money and time. And now my hair is falling out in handfuls. Ughhhh

I would agree with the others above. Buy your own food, cook for yourself and just let your family know (in the kindest possible way) that you need to do this for yourself and that if they cannot be supportive of you then they can at least keep their comments to themselves.

Beans and nuts are not the only plant-based foods that contain Protein. Literally every plant-based food contains protein. Rice and broccoli have protein. Potatoes have protein. Pasta has protein. Wraps and breads have protein.
How to get to 46 grams of protein on a 1200 calorie plant-based diet without using shakes?
Protein is not some magical hard-to-find nutrient. It's in everything. And yes, in the beginning, the real estate in your stomach will be limited. Obviously supplementation is required then, just like it is for people eating meat. As you can eat more, you'll be able to fit plenty of plant-based protein in your stomach. This kind of fear-mongering is silly. If people after WLS can eat fast food and pizza "in moderation," you can eat sufficient plant food to meet your protein goal. And if you're worried, have a vegan Protein Shake or eat a vegan Protein Bar.
And yes, you absolutely can get too much protein in your diet. High protein diets are hard on the kidneys in particular, and animal protein is linked with heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
I love how eating meat is a given and you don't have to worry or do extensive math or have some strategically planned diet to be nutritious, but eating plants - OMG, no, call a medical summit to analyze it first!
Sorry... I really should not post late at night while on a liquid diet. My attitude is terrible.

Quorn is vegetarian, at least the ones sold in the US. Some products do contain milk and egg. But all products are safe for vegetarians. The vegan products have even been accredited by the Vegan Society.

You should try Quorn products. Soy free and gluten free vegetarian sources of protein. They are mushroom based protein - but they don't taste like mushrooms I swear! The Turk'y roast is my favorite - beats a tofurkey any day. I even got my meat eating father to eat it more than once. The Turk'y roast has 100 calories, 13 gr protein and 0.5 gr sugar per serving. And the serving is larger than you would think.

I believe organic non-gmo soy or tofu is ok. I wouldn't eat it by the pound everyday, but a few servings a week is fine based on the research I did. If you don't have a gluten allergy then seiten is also great. I don't have a wheat allergy and from the research I have done it really isn't as common as we are lead to believe.

Healthy foods may be more expensive, but you will not eat nearly as much as you did before. Yes you will need items that are not part of your regular food plan like Vitamins and Protein Shakes, but literally, you will be eating 6 ounces of food a day in total! A perfect example of two things I did.. I made my own Protein crust for pizza. 1 cup of mozz cheese, 1 egg, and 1 1/2 cups chopped cauliflower.. I may have spent 8 dollars on those 3 items.. the cheese will make this twice, and so will the cauliflower.. and well you now have 11 eggs for something else.. so in essence it cost me 4 bucks to make this crust, but this one batch of crust made 5.. enough for 5 meals!!! and then some.. because I can only eat half LOL. Also, we have wawa gas station here, and I bought an egg bowl. with eggs, steak (double) and cheese.. the item cost me 3.74 but again, it was 5 breakfasts worth of food.. what somebody else would eat in one meal. It truly is worth it in the end!

I am weighing all of the positives versus all of the negatives while trying to make a final decision about surgery. I have been considering the gastric sleeve surgery for years, and am now closer to making decision than I have ever been . The referral has been made and I have scheduled my consultation. So far, just about everything I have researched has me leaning towards going for it except my fear that I won't be able to afford the expense of groceries in the future. Why are healthy foods so expensive? And the Protein and Vitamins expense is scary to think about. I have joint pain, apnea and high blood pressure as well as a rare disease and know that my future health would benefit from the surgery, but I'm so poor! Is bariatric surgery only a solution for people with more substantial finances? (I have insurance and some savings to help with surgery costs). And advice?

So I am only 2.5 weeks post op and incredibly frustrated because the scale is moving soooo slow and not at all since Monday, however I put a sweater on today that I bought in October and it was too tight to wear. Today it is loose so 🤷‍♀️... guess I just have to trust this process and try not to obsess and stay off the damn scale for a while. Ugh !

I have posted a couple of times, asking questions so that I can make a final decision. I am 100% sure that having the surgery is the best decision for my health. I think the biggest obstacle now is a lack of family support. Everyone is my family suffers with a wonderful metabolism, I on the other hand, have a rare disease that causes weight issues, as does the medication I am on for the disease. My doctors all support my decision, but I don't feel comfortable even telling my weight obsessed skinny family members. We live on a large farm, 3 generations and we share meals together (1 large, central kitchen). They eat horrible meals. When/If I tell them, I know they will appear to support my decision, but meals are going to be an issue. The relationships are complicated and so just hoping that they are supportive because they are family, is really a fallacy. I am dealing with hypercritical, judgemental and passive aggressive personalities. Advice?

Buy your own food and cook for yourself. Since they are weight obsessed, If anyone suggests you eat or don't eat something, say "thanks" and then eat what you planned to eat.
My husband and I do some separate shopping and cooking now and it's worked out OK. He cooked all the time before the surgery, and sometimes he will make something I can eat, like plain chicken, and I just weigh 4 oz. and thank him and eat it.

Ouch... I thought my Constipation is bad!! I have been taking one dulcolax and two stool softeners a day and I go about every other day (and then it's either passing boulders or burning diarrhea for two hours). Either way it's a painful experience. I am drinking my Water, getting in my Fiber and it doesn't making a f---king bit of difference. Nevertheless, at least it's coming out once every 48 or so hours. I couldn't go once every seven to nine days!!!! That's awful!!! You really need to discuss that with your doctor and come up with a plan. You guys must have 8 pounds of poop in your system!!!
