I was sleeved in Mexico and, while my surgeon did provide consultation, information and support, some info was conflicting or incomplete. For that, Google is a wonderful thing. ObesityCoverage.com has a wealth of information. When I need perspective from others, I come here. Everyone's experience is sooooo different, no doctor's office can replace those personal stories.

I had virtually no preop or postop instructions. I wasn’t even taught how to handle/empty my JP drain after my hospital visit. My surgeons office scheduled me for my first “followup” 6 weeks after my surgery. I called and changed it, because I wasn’t about to have a JP drain for 6 weeks. Indeed, my surgeon gave me no real instructions on postop diet. I had a sheet from a nutritionist that I saw 4 months prior to surgery (I use “saw” loosely, it was done over Skype). I’ve received much better info here than I did from any preop appts (which were just basically a weight check once a month). My surgeon was rated highly online, and I liked him well enough, but the info from his office was pretty light (especially after reading what others have gone through). So, some of this isn’t a “stupidity” issue. I just don’t think people know the difference between what will be a good surgeon/program and what makes for a bad surgeon/program. Had I not found this community, I would have thought my experience was the norm.
This brings up another point. When people on here say “follow your surgeons program” or “have you checked in with your surgeon about X”, they might be doing everything they were told (which is to say, not much).

i know of someone, an older lady, who had gastric bypass surgery at a hospital in Georgia.
the next day, the daughter brings a box of Cinnabons to her in the hospital room. they proceed to start eating them. she tears open her new stomach and has to go into emergency surgery to save her life, cleaning cinnabons out of her abdomen.
moral of the story? there seems to be no limit to the stupidity of most people in this country. it is infinite and almost beyond the imagination. while some bariatric offices are better than others at preparation and patient education, none of that really matters when dealing with the average American.
    look at our president.

I hauled butt to my pcp to cry wtf. I lost more weight in month 1 on all the different diet fads I did. I lost 11 pounds in 11 days after surgery then nothing, not a speck for 20 days. THIS IS NOT EVEN SCIENCE LOL! I was on antibiotics back to back for uti and also dealing with kidney stones but I felt so bewildered and ripped off. Then the last 5 days I lost a pound a day for no particular reason except maybe that I added a bit more carbs and fat because that would shake things up when I stalled low carbing before. But I felt the same feelings of panic and disbelief and feeling ripped off.

LOL. I know I'm gonna have a smokin' hot bod--with tons of sad, droopy, melted candle skin cuz no money in the inn for plastics. And I will be bald-- and forced into a Jacquelyn Smith wig from Paula Young Wigs. And I will just slowly gather all the extra skin into a top knot on top of my head, secure it with a rubber band. And put on my happy wavy wig. Guess it will still be a fair trade. LOL.

I haven't cheated with food just yet that I know of, but my mentality is starting to change a bit. I am not that far out of surgery but I have already found myself becoming more focused on what other people are eating around me. Maybe it is because I don't have enough to do at the table anymore? Either way, for the first time I have started watching what other people order and what they eat and kind of judging them for it. I of course don't say anything, but I am thinking, "oh, that is why you are having a hard time losing", or "that is how you stay so thin".
I feel horrible about this. This was honestly one of my fears when I was gaining weight and then super morbidly obese. I didn't want other people to see me eat because I thought they would judge me for it. I don't want to be someone that judges others either. I think the only positive is that it is helping me to observe and learn so maybe I can be more cognizant of my own behaviors in the future when my appetite returns.
Has anyone else developed this or any other habits like it?

So if you mix Protein Powder into Water, does it slide right through without your body absorbing the Protein? Is it better mixed with fair life milk or doesn't that slide through too? Can we ever eat Soup again or does the broth slip all the soup bits right on out? I'll ask at my next appt but there are so many different answers and different nutritionist opinions.

Or maybe I just like annoying the men in my life, calling them "Felicia" and "Girl".... honestly, it's a crapshoot. #teamgenderneutral #professionalopinion

Sweettoothless reacted to Missouri-Lee's Summit in ER trip to rule out blood clot
I'm one month out from my bypass. Last night, I had intense leg pain in my right calf. Pain has to be off-the-charts for me to even notice.
When you take as much morphine as I do (for an unrelated chronic condition), the pain has to be really bad. This was at least an 8 out of 10.
This afternoon, after suffering all night and all day today, I finally mentioned what was going on. My daughter dropped by for a visit and
she could see right away that I was trying to hide my pain from her. I could have lied, told her it was post-surgery discomfort, but I don't like
    being dishonest with my kids.

Anyway, it wasn't my idea to go to the ER. My daughter insisted. I figured it was a muscle pull or a cramp. I didn't seem to have the
the typical symptoms for a clot, so I thought I'd just sweat it out.

The ER took my leg pain complaint seriously. They did an ultrasound, took an X-ray, and did a lot of blood work. Everything was normal.
I was actually more interested in my blood work. After weeks of lousy Protein and Fluid intake, I figured I'd have abnormal readings.
Not so. My Protein was within normal limits, my electrolytes were fine.. so was everything else.

Do I feel silly for going to the ER? Yes and no. Would I have gone if my daughter hadn't stopped by? Probably not. Would I suggest that
someone else with the same leg pain go to the ER to rule out a clot? Probably.

It's amazing how we often won't take symptoms we experience concerning our own body seriously, but when it comes to others, we tend to take things
    very seriously...

There is a certain point in the relationship when the thing that should attract a partner most is their personality and mind not their looks. We all age, get wrinkles, saggy bits etc. Some of us gain weight, others lose but inside it is still the person that you loved.
It's sad when a person forgets that

Practice exactly what you are going to say to him when he tries to slither back into your bed. It will happen at some point. Even if you never actually say it to preserve your co-parenting. You could say, sorry I only go to bed with men who work out/ have a full head of hair/ good teeth... whatever his Achille's tendon is.

Sweettoothless got a reaction from Frustr8 in Gastric bypass tomorrow I am really nervous. What was surgery day like for you?
Got there at 11 for a 1:15 surgery time. They had me leave a urine sample so they could run a pregnancy test even though I am almost 50 and my husband was in a different state for the month prior so no nookie. They gave me a gown to put on. The anesthesiologist came in. Rumor had it the the whole anesthesiology team was super hot. Totally true. Then they brought my husband in. They were ahead of schedule so my surgery got bumped up 45 mins. They shooed my husband out and wheeled me to operating room. Super-Hot stopped me on my way and put something in my iv and I was out before we even got to the operating room. In recovery I woke up with clavicle pain, worse part of the whole thing. Stayed in recovery room for several hours because my room wasnt ready which I was cool with because i was sleeping. Only given tylenol. No stomach pain at all. Rang for potty "help" and some young guy came in to help me which wasnt my thing so i watched how he disconnected everything. I didnt let him assist me in the bathroom and he asked that I stay on the potty and ring for him to help me up. Yeah no. So each time I needed to potty after that I just disconnected myself and reconnected myself after. I wasnt wobbly on my feet so I felt ok doing it.
