What goals (besides a specific weight or BMI) have you set for yourself? A while back my husband bought me a Game of Thrones t-shirt that I loved. He bought me, a 2X woman, a medium. God bless him, he said to me, "I dunno, you look kinda medium. I guess I was thinking of men's sizes, I didn't want you to swim in it." A men's 2X was too long, but comfortably loose on me! It was non-returnable and I threw it in a drawer, not sure why I didn't toss it. I am down almost 30lbs., mostly from the pre-surgery weight loss, and today I tried it on. It's skin tight, but I was able to fit into it. Another 30 and it will fit nicely. So that is my first goal, to fit into that shirt. What goals do you have?

I can 100% relate! I wish I could have lost a pound for every time my husband told me if I just ate right and exercised that I wouldn’t need surgery!! Then I REALLY wouldn’t have needed the surgery - lol! I had been thinking about it for YEARS and I always let him talk me out of it (stupid on my part). This time I did all the pre-op appointments and even scheduled my surgery before I told him about it. My surgery was on 10/10 and I will say he has actually been pretty good about it. I really hope your husband steps up too! My reply to my husband one time was “keep it up and I’ll lose 340 lbs REAL FAST!” He knew I was talking about him!

As much as I like to believe I can eat meat (poultry) as much as I want, I can't. I have to force it out or it tries to sit inside me like forever.
    Anyone else?

Hi there! I started at 463, so I'm up there with you. I had the sleeve. I never wanted to do the bypass, and my surgeon didn't try to persuade me to do one surgery or the other; he wanted me to make the choice, so I read info on both, and I decided to do the sleeve. I lost 58 pounds pre-op, and I've lost 119 post-op. It's been FANTASTIC for me! It's been the best decision I've ever made. Wouldn't change it!

Thank you all for your comments. I am honestly surprised so many people favor the bypass. It’s something to think about for sure. We all have different goals too I think. I’ve been over 300 pounds since 9th grade. I’ve always been what I would call very active for my size until the last couple of years. I’m not trying to look good in a swimsuit or anything like that, I’ve always been a big guy and I am happy with that. I just want to be able to take my sons hunting and prolong this wonderful life I have a little longer. For me complications, cost, personal feelings and goals all play part in my decision.

Sizing is so weird! I've lost 177 pounds, so you think I would be down a ton of sizes right? Not really. I started at a 4x shirt, and I'm now in a 2x shirt. Pants, I was in 32s and I'm now in 26s (3 sizes down). I'm keeping at it though. You've got this! Also, I see the original post was a couple of months ago; how are things going now?

Hi Jed! I was 365 at my highest (which is pretty high for a woman) and I also had the sleeve. A couple of my friends thought I should do the bypass because I had/have so much to lose but my surgeon left it up to me so I chose the sleeve because of the slightly lower complication rate. Surgery was 1 month ago and I’ve lost 61 lbs (38 before surgery and 23 since). The good news about being REALLY overweight is you tend to lose faster than people with less to lose. Good luck to you!!

    Focus on the upcoming surgery.
    1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
    2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery. [With chronic arthritis in your feet and knees, this might be difficult. But try - gas pain will present itself during the first week after surgery and walking helps take this away.]
    3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.

Think less about comebacks, and more about his comments. Is he afraid of having you do the surgery? Is he anxious you're going to lose a lot of weight and leave him? Is he worried that you won't be able to do the same things together?
But honestly, if he has always been unsupportive as it seems, just keep yourself focused on the prize. Either he will get in line eventually, or he won't. This is about YOU, and YOUR decision.

GOOD LUCK, you will do well!

@jultrim18 you are not alone in these feelings. I have started counseling as well because even at two weeks post surgery, I find myself miserable and repulsed by the "new" life I am living. If my husband takes me to the movies (to get me out of the house), I cry through most of it (happened twice already 😢) because of the smell of popcorn and knowing I can't have it. We try to go visit family and have some sense of normalcy and I started crying at the dinner table...right into my 2oz of strained cream Soup. I have already made the decision I will spend Thanksgiving home alone this year and send my husband and kids to eat and Celebrate with the family. I don't want my depression to ruin everyone holiday. I know I am going to need help overcoming this and my husband and kids (age 16 & 19) don't know how to help at this point. That is where the counseling comes in and at this point I am really hoping it works or at least improves my Outlook as I adjust to this "new" me. 😕

Hello. I just signed up after months of reading these forums as I feel the need to share some support. I too will be having a sleeve done hopefully end of January/early February. He is extremely fit, works out every day but he knows my challenges. He’s been supportive and we both wished I’d done this years ago. Please, please stay on your path to a better you. I hope that when I’m post-op and join the post-op forum chats, you are right along side me.

Am I the only lunatic who shoves blankets/pillows/etc. under my clothes to show how much smaller I am than I used to be?
Exhibit A: a pair of pants that I could not fit into/could barely fit into for at least a month after surgery, now with room for an entire fluffy blanket...might be time for some new jeans...

HI all - I know I'm new and maybe too new to complain, but I need a bit of help. I was just sitting at the table with my husband, eating small food off my small plate and mentioning that I got sugar free Creamer and also how excited that I am to be exactly 4 weeks away from surgery. His comments were that if I can adhere to a pre-op diet, then all I need to do is diet and exercise and I don't need surgery. This man has watched me struggle with my weight, given me **** about it, scoffed at my eating choices and generally just been an a$$hole about this for years. Is it too much to ask to have someone support me?
What words can I tell him so that he will understand that the chronic arthritis in my feet and knees makes it almost impossible for me to work out without being incapacitated for days after. That I can lose weight no problem I just have never been able to keep it off. That I've finally made a great decision for me and he is shitting on my happy parade? I am literally crushed right now.

I'd love a usable, stellar comeback. Anyone?

    Surgery Date: 10/29/18

    Highest Weight: 316
    Surgery Weight: 295
    Current Weight: 282
Goal Weight: 219 (This likely seems high to most people, considering many of you HAD surgery at this weight. My doc sets the goal at 60% of EWL - which is the average weight loss for the sleeve. He said its likely I’ll lose 12-15 BMI points. I like that he’s conservative because it sets more realistic ideas for me. If I lose more, great. If I “only” get to 220, I’ve still lost almost 100 lbs)
