Had my surgery yesterday... definitely not what I expected. It took eight tries to get a stable IV and I literally almost walked out right then and there. I was walking about three hours after surgery and walked about every hour. Haven’t really felt much gas except before I started walking but have quite a bit of pain in my abdomen where the stomach was removed. I swear I feel sooo hungry. I don’t have a desire to eat cause of the pain but I definitely feel like my stomach burns, almost like the feeling when you haven’t eaten anything in a while , but way worse. Hopefully it’ll go away soon :)

Don’t be scared ladies. I have my surgery on January 7 and I was so nervous before I almost made myself sick. I am now only 10 days postop and I can honestly tell you that it wasn’t nearly as big of a deal as I was making out to be in my head. I’m doing awesome, I have no problem drinking fluids, and honestly just feel really great. The first two days I was in a little bit of pain but only took Tylenol and that took care of it. I’ve already 31lbs since January 3 (the start of my preop diet). So I guess what I’m saying is don’t be nervous, it really ain’t no thing 🙂

I told immediate family and one work friend beforehand. Oh, and individual friends who live out of state/country. Then I've been revealing it one by one to the rest of the family (basically, you see me in person, you get the actual scoop) and on a person-by-person basis for others.
I'm very aware that a limited explanation will likely reinforce the "you only need to diet and exercise" storyline, which I personally found harmful when it was recited at me in the past decade, so I do try to be forthright about it. Surgery is the only thing that works permanently, and I don't want to mislead. But I am selective about who I tell - the gym rat who eats only chicken breasts, is looking to shave off five pounds and wants my secret diet tricks? No. The coworker with a 9 month old baby and 30 pregnancy pounds she can't shake? Yes.
It really is up to you as an individual, but I'd like to do what I can to remove the surgery stigma. It's the only thing that works reliably, and pushing back against decades of social conditioning that ignores science and insists it's only a matter of willpower is important. But that's not a path for everyone, and I wouldn't judge anyone who chooses to be private about what is, currently, a stigmatized procedure.

2 days post OP. Happy to be in med last night and able to sleep more than a couple of hours before someone is coming in your room for something. My stomach is one big bruise. I'm easily getting in my fluids. Each day gets better

15 hours post op. First few hours were really rough with grogginess and pain. Turned out to be from the gas they pump in you. I won the “can she pee any more frequently” award as I think it’s been almost every 45 minutes ...LOL... but feeling pretty good considering!

You shouldn't be embarrassed. I really think shame is a big part of why I am here at this point in my life and why my relationship with food is so sucky. Coincidentally, I was just reading a section entitled "Pushing for Perfection" in the bariatric manual from my surgeon's office. It starts out, "The desire to be the 'perfect patient' is going to leave you disappointed. If your personality is one who strives to be perfect at everything, be mindful of this trap. You are not going to be perfect. You are still encouraged to try your best..." So saying no more is a very good thing, but let go of shame. It usually serves its purpose in the first few minutes of feeling it, so it does no good to hang onto it.

I am however not as nervous, only because my surgeon has operated on me previously, for a unrelated issue. Dr. Marc Neff, CherryHill, NJ. He is phenomenal, professional, caring and just everything you would want in your surgeon. So that does make this process easier.

Surgery date - yesterday!! Rough night last night with a lot of pain that ended up being due to the gas they pump in you. No one here let’s you sleep either. ;). I’m about 14 hours post op now and feeling pretty good- 7 walks under my belt, keeping Water down and I am dreaming of Jello. ;)

I am in the same boat. I am going in next Tuesday. I have my bariatric pantry with all my Protein and Bone Broth Soups etc. I am going to get all my Vitamins organized and medications all together. I have to make a daily chart which I'll be checking off Water intake, protein and medication since there is SO much to track. I dont have any idea how people go back to work right away. I need to choose a few more books on Audible and have those ready to go. I really didnt want to make too many pureed soups etc because I have no idea what I'll tolerate and dont want to have gallons of pureed Soup I dont like. I guess I could do a few. I need to be careful not to read too many people's experiences as it just ramps up my anxiety (what if that happens to me).
I am a major control freak and it's very very hard for me not to know what to expect!! Hang in there. Pretty soon we'll be looking back on these posts as a distant memory!

My surgery is on the 29th, but I only have to do liquids the day before.....BUT I have chosen to do something very similar to what your doctor orders starting on Tuesday.
Right now I am trying hard to at least try to eat healthy, but it is so hard as i am having food funerals.

The food funerals make me feel SO guilty.
When I went to my Dr on the 9th, he reminded me to not have the mentality that i am going to the chair. Well thats hard to do!!!!
Even though he is telling me that eventually I will be able to eat some of my favorites again, I really don't know if that is going to be the best thing for me to even attempt to do.
    Sigh

I didn't really even have a discussion with my dr about it...
but i ate a lot of carbs and I will be paying for it in the next few days. However, I am actually sick of food right now because I ate a lot more than I have been in months so hopefully I feel this way for two weeks LOL
