mousecat88 got a reaction from AndreaK. in Broke up with bf over this surgery.
Oh, I know. LAST TIME I kicked him out, he had a deadline. He had a friend looking for a roommate at that time, though. I am the breadwinner in the household and he only has about 300$ in disposable income monthly, so now it's tricky. I am kind of hoping that same friend will open his door for him. I'm giving him until Jan 1st.

My (ex) bf and I have dated for nearly 5 years; he lives with me. The last year of our relationship has been rocky anyway, but ever since I told him I had decided to have gastric he became even more standoffish and argumentative. Two weeks ago we had a huge blowout over something completely idiotic, he comes back to the house, and says he has been acting the way he has because he thinks that once I lose weight I am going to leave him and that's all he can think about.
Mind you... I have not even had the surgery yet. He said I am going to lose weight, gain self-esteem, realize I am too good for him, and leave him.
Well, guess what, pal... I don't need to lose ANY weight to realize I am too good for you. It's been a long time coming, but I think it's even sadder that he is using my choice to get healthier as a justification for being an a*s.
The only thing this does is put me in a rough position as far as someone staying with me while I recover. My mom and stepdad are going to take "shifts" as long as they can, but they both work. And the ex is currently dwelling awkwardly in my basement, but will probably not give me a hand at all. It does make me sad because I had hoped he would be there at the hospital with me... but then all of this BS happens. *insert gigantic eye roll emoji here*
I am okay, though. I need these next 12 months to focus on me and getting healthy and fit and not dealing with unnecessary dramatics and stress. I have always thrived when single and he actually had moved out of the house for a year and it was fantastic. I hate to say it, but I'm looking forward to this new chapter - of not just weight loss, but of being single and free!

mousecat88 got a reaction from peekaboo22 in Did you tell your new partner you had WLS?
I had the original plan of not "worrying" about getting into the dating scene until I had gone through my weight loss, plastic surgery, etc. I wanted to spend the next 2 years focusing on just me and my health. I was talking about this with my mother and she thinks it would be better to start dating someone before I lost the weight, so I know they care about me no matter my size. Personally, I feel more comfortable waiting so I am comfortable with myself and not adding to stress.
That being said, did you tell your new partner after you lost weight that you had weight loss surgery? Did you mention it in your dating profile? I feel like I want to be upfront that, hey, I was almost 300lbs once and I do not want to be with anyone who has an issue with that. I would hate to get to know someone, and then have them make some snide comment about obese people, etc. I want to screen out those people. How did you approach the subject?

I've been going on random dates for a little while and I told one person since the date unexpectedly led to food and I haven't seen that person since

I've told the others recently that I am living a healthier lifestyle and I steer the date setting to things that don't revolve around food! One of my pictures on my dating profile is a "progress" selfie so fitness inevitably comes up.

mousecat88 reacted to Matt Z in Can’t decide which surgery is best... let’s talk about hunger
Just a heads up, that "hunger hormone removal" thing is pretty bunk. Almost all sleeve patients regain some level of hunger at some point within the first year.

Both surgeries have a level of hunger changes. For both surgeries, some folks lose the sensation and never get it back, most lose it or have it greatly reduced but get it back within the first year. And some never lose it at all.

The sleeve can make GERD or any acid reflux issues worse, this happens pretty often.
The bypass can resolve GERD and acid reflux issues, this is very common.
The sleeve is 100% un-reversible, 90% of your stomach ends up in medical waste.
Contrary to popular belief, the Bypass *IS* reversible under certain circumstances, reversals don't happen often due to the danger of doing so, but they *DO* happen and it *IS* an option if something really bad happens.

I was "against" the bypass originally, one of the reasons I had the band installed in 2011. With the revision, my surgeon wouldn't do the sleeve... for good reasons that were specific to my surgery, so I went with the bypass and I really couldn't be happier. Everyone is going to have their personal preferences, but overall, the bypass results in less follow up surgeries for failed WLS, has a better weight loss % and a better % of weight kept off.

I won't tell you which is best for you. But for me, I truly wish I went with the bypass back in 2011.

I am having bypass on Thursday. My surgeon said it will reduce/eliminate hunger and cravings, but if you read these forums... you'll see that both bypass and sleeve patients still experience some hunger and cravings. From everything I've read and everyone I've talked to, neither seems to be better than the other. It really seems to be luck of the draw and how your own body reacts.
As an aside, the sleeve can make acid reflux worse, while bypass improves it... which is why I went with that choice. Don't know if you suffer from acid reflux, but that's something to consider, too!

    5 - 10 mins maybe.
At first you REALLY want to just listen to your body, my day 1 out of surgery and I didn't even get in 1 full 8 oz bottle of Protein. Forget Water. Day 2 was better, I got through a whole bottle, and some water. Day 3 I was home and already started purees. I was eating about 1 oz of pureed stuff a several times a day, and drinking something every 15 mins (except when I had to wait the 30 mins after eating). The big take away, is take your time. No matter what you feel should be happening, no matter how much weight you are or are not losing. Take your time, listen to your body and, if it hurts... stop.

Not yet - I have my final visit with my surgeon tomorrow morning and I'll bring it up. I went ahead just now and scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist for next week - hope I am up to going.

Pft this thread. Yeah... um... I gained 15lbs during my "food funerals" between my first appointment and the last one I had (June 6th - mid-September) and after finding out that I hadn't lost a single pound in 7 days on my pre-op diet, I went and got Burger King AND Taco Bell yesterday sooooo. Yeah. Actually feel pretty ashamed about it since I didn't even make it a solid 7 days without slipping up. I'm sure post-op NEXT WEEK will be peachy..

I bought a 64oz water bottle when I started taking a super strong diuretic for my pseudotumor. I've since stopped taking the diuretic, but I'm still always thirsty so I fill that thing up twice at work, and then drink several more 8oz glasses at home! I hope I can somehow get close to this again after my stomach is tiny!

I drink 100oz - 120oz a day currently, and I have been on the bariatric Vitamin regimine for the last 15 days + some weird immunonutrition immune boosting recovery shake. I don't *feel* stressed. I don't know. It is really painful though! I feel like I need something like Accutane, but I am scared to take a medicine that harsh post-abdominal surgery.

I have a call on Monday with the bariatric nurse to confirm my medications. I think I need to discuss this with them. Because I've been on other diets before and lost more than this in a shorter time. So something isn't right... unless my body is in starvation mode and it's going to drop a TON all at once. It's really hard not to get discouraged, though, when you actually do what you're supposed to. =( I lost more weight in September when I was eating Taco Bell once a day. lol. Not kidding.

I honestly don't know that there is a scientific starvation mode post WLS, but people without the surgery do have a drop in metabolism after about 3 days.
I did lose 12lbs on my liquid only Protein Drink pre-op diet. But, my ankles swelled up badly and I did battle Fluid retention. My insulin spiked crazy high in response to the whey Protein isolates. So I started using Premier which is a combo of WPI and WPC and it did help a little.
But as @MIZ60 mentioned, check your labels for carbs, sugars, sodium, etc!
Also most WPI is filled with extra phosphorous which can also be hard on the kidneys and can make you retain fluids if you have any kidney issues.

I've been on my pre-op diet for 5 solid days now and I have lost 1 lb! I thought we are supposed to lose weight on this thing! My surgeon said "everybody" drops a lot of pounds in these 16 days and I have lost 1lb. ONE. And I am starving! What gives!? I have two shakes a day that are 100-180 calories each and one frozen meal under 300 calories and that's it!
If I can't lose weight eating this few calories, how will surgery help? Feeling discouraged.

So I thought I was an epic genius for buying baby food for the puree stage. (My nutritionist said the meat-only ones were fine). Exact portion, no sugar, no salt, no carbs, already blended, 7g protein... I've had the veggie baby food before and it's, dare I say, delicious. The meat, however....

NOPENOPENOPE. I made my ex try some of the ham one and he gagged. I licked some of the beef one and it is cat food. Literally... I am giving it to my cats.
I am pre-op, by the way. Hahaha... glad I taste-tested beforehand!
