February 2019 weight loss buds
Initially my doctor and Nutritionist counted protein shakes and even yogurt towards my 64 ounce goal. I don’t count the yogurt now but still count the shakes and milk toward my fluid ounce goal. I still barely make 50-60 oz/day. Do you count all fluids or only water?

February 2019 weight loss buds
I wonder if you helped her divide sweet treats like the candy into tiny portions and have her see if she can have control over portion size. Maybe 10 M and Ms? We all know that the first bite or 2 are the best and after that you just mindlessly eat the rest of a serving or bag.

February 2019 weight loss buds
It was terrible and sudden in June at the 4 month mark. I try to go 2 days sometime s 3 between washes and I am super gentle. I spray an oil on it and use a wide tooth comb. I don't dry it hard with a towel, I comb it form the ends up to not snag a knot. The shower drain had a clump every time and I still pulled off a lot from the comb each day. Now it is not a huge clump in the drain but still a lot in the comb. I also will see one hair hanging and when I touch it more come out with it. I noticed I have terrible roots and it is baby hairs that are almost an inch long so even thought I am losing a lot there is hope that some is growing back already.

February 2019 weight loss buds
Maybe it's just a fluke but I washed my hair and had less shedding. It was sudden and really bad at the 4 month mark and has been a steady loss ever since. I am hoping maybe I went thru the worst of it and it will start slowing down now. Fingers crossed!

The Maintenance Thread
I agree that the scale jumps around a lot. My weight has been within the same 1-2 pounds for the past few weeks but I just took measurements and I am down 1/4-3/4 of an inch so obviously I am building up muscle and loosing fat and my body shape is changing. My jeans and shorts (and bra unfortunately) are also suddenly looser at the same weight.

What’s your favorite protein shake
I would also suggest buying Fairlife milk. Initially it was hard for me to drink the shakes so I added a little of the milk (it’s higher protein) to make the shakes taste better. I still add a few ounces of milk even now.

Post op foods help please
Protein flavored water. I think I bought it at Walmart. It kind of has a dry after taste. It tasted better ice cold (to me at least).

Anyone else NOT NPO for surgery?
I had NPO. After midnight however 2 hours before surgery I had to drink this high carb juice they provided. My surgeon has been practicing for 20 years so maybe it’s old school? There was a rational but I don’t remember the details.

1400 calories for maintenance
I’m only 6 months out. I felt like it was coming off too quick and I was already below my goal at 5 months. I increased from 600/700 to 1000 and still lost 2-3 pounds for the first week or so. Now I have maintained the same weight the past 2 weeks on the same 1000. So it may take a few weeks at the higher calories and I am assuming higher carbs to really judge where your body settles.

The Maintenance Thread
I’m 6 months post bypass. The most volume of food I can eat in a 15-20 minute sitting is 1/3 to maybe 1/2 cup. Today I had 1 egg, about 1/4 cup of veggies and shredded cheese on top. The veggies cook down so it’s a half cup. I can eat half of it in a few minutes then have to wait and come back 10-15 minutes later to finish it. If I eat yogurt I can get a cup that’s 5-6 oz in 5 -10 minutes easily. Is this about the same for you?

Was told not to lose weight or surgery would get denied.
I was the same 36/35 BMI. I ate salty food the night before MD appts and wore heavier clothes. I also made afternoon vs morning appointments. It’s crazy but if I had randomly lost 4-5 pounds per the scale at an early morning appointment then it would have messed up insurance. Everyone bounces around a few pounds all day long and I didn’t want to happen to be too close to the cut off when the doctor measured my weight knowing if he weighed me an hour later it would probably be up again. They did weigh me the morning of surgery and had warned me early on that if I slipped under 34.9 that my insurance wouldn’t cover it. My weight did fluctuate a few pounds during the 6 months but was always above 35 BMI.

February 2019 weight loss buds
I would love for my cheeks to be full and youthful. People say I look younger but I feel like I have an old lady face and neck now.
-
Burping
I only do if I eat or drink too quickly or if I eat too much.

What fruit can you and can’t you eat?
I remember hearing no citrus or apple skins ever too.
-
Nuts
I can eat nuts and nut butters too. The dietician did say be careful initially since they are harder to digest.

Can I dump 2 hours after?
When I eat fruit I try to eat a little yogurt or 2 pieces of walnut with it so I have protein and fat mixed with the carbs. If I rarely eat fruit by itself it's only 1 strawberry or a 1/4 cup of blueberries.

SWEET JESUS MY HAIR!!!!!
I am right at 6 months post. It started suddenly at month 4, and hasn't slowed down. I take the vitamins as directed, got my protein in etc. It didn't matter. I started using Noixin shampoo about a month ago. I also tried colored dry shampoo sprays and Toppik that definitely help. However I am now used to not seeing my scalp and after I wash it it looks terrible since then I see my naked scalp and my hair looks even thinner. On a good note I color my hair every 4-5 weeks and a few weeks ago I noticed that I had really visible roots and it was only 2 weeks since my last color. I looked closer and noticed I had a ton of baby gray hairs. So even though it is still falling out much more than normal at least I see new hair coming in. I am guessing it will look thinner as I keep losing a lot of hair until the new hair gets long enough. I am doing everything possible to keep the hair I have. I only wash it every 2-3 days, use a wide tooth comb starting at the ends to not pull out any additional hair. At least fall is around the corner and I can start wearing a cute hat.

Where are my water guzzlers?
At 6 months post I can’t guzzle water if I have eaten in the past 1-2 hours. I can drink maybe 3-4 oz every few minutes about 90 min after eating. If I ate 30 minutes ago I can drink maybe 1-2 oz at a time with 5-10 minutes between but if it’s too much or too fast I burp and stop.

When could you tolerate salad?!
I tired salad last week. Maybe a half cut of lettuce cut up into small pieces. It went ok so I will try it at home a few more times before I try it out and about. I am trying to get more vitamin dense veggies but have restriction still so I started sautéing a cup of spinach that cooks down into nothing then adding an egg to scramble together. I can get the egg and spinach eaten in about 20-30 minutes.

The Maintenance Thread
Well all of you were right and thank you for the advice. I was getting so anxious about never stalling and steadily losing 2-3 pounds per week and was afraid that despite increasing my calories to 1000 that I was heading into losing too much too quickly. Then with people making comments about getting too small or needing to eat more it messed with my head. I think it was also the fact of mentally not feeling in control of what was happening with my body I felt like I was on a runaway train. It seems that the first 2 weeks of increased calories did nothing and I kept losing but the past 1-2 weeks I have been bouncing around 132-134 (5 ft 2). I am happy where I am right now at but if I could I would like to slowly lose maybe 5-10 over a few months, not weeks and gain some muscle that would be ideal. I also am thinking since I am just now at the 6 month mark that realistically I could see a possible gain of 5-10 pounds on this journey and I want to have some wiggle room if that happens. I had backed off on fitness for fear of losing too much too quickly, so instead I am going to focus on fitness now and keeping calories and carb level where they are and see where that gets me.

February 2019 weight loss buds
There's no way I could get that many calories in. I was beginning to worry about losing too much too quickly. Weird to think right? My goal was 140, I am now floating around 133/134 but for the past 3 weeks I increased from 700-1000 calories since I have been steadily losing 2-3 pounds per week. It feels like a push to try and get 1000 calories in. People are saying comments about being too thin etc and I am saggy everywhere so I want to maintain here or if I drop another 5-10 slowly I would be ok but I felt like I needed a stall to let my body catch up. I have not been going to the gym much and wanted to get my calories up and weight steady before I push building up muscle so that's what I am concentrating on now. Maybe try to increase slowly towards 1000 calories and see if you can continue weight loss.

February 2019 weight loss buds
I have been using dry shampoo to extend to 2-3 days between shampooing. As if that will prevent hair from falling out but mentally it keeps me from seeing clumps on the shower floor everyday. I have bought some dry shampoo sprays that are tinted which helps it look fuller.

Menstrual cycles
OMG. Yes!! Prior I had a typical 5 day period every 28 days. The first one was a week after surgery (early) but not a big deal. Month 2 I thought I would need a blood transfusion. Now it's not regular but every 3-6 weeks, heavier than normal but seems to be getting better. I am only 6 months out so I think your body stabilizes once the rapid weight loss slows.

February 2019 weight loss buds
I am guessing a lot of us are dealing with hair loss at this point. It happened to me in June suddenly and I don't think it has slowed done at all yet. However I noticed something weird today. I have gray roots and normally color my hair every 4-5 weeks. I colored my hair literally 2 1/2 weeks ago and suddenly I have a ton of half inch roots all over. So on closer inspection I noticed that I have a ton of baby hairs growing too. I think my hair may be growing in quicker now and that the roots are showing so much sooner. I am trying to focus on that instead of freaking out about the clump on the shower floor or in my brush. I also tried Toppik and like it better than sprays I have tried before. I have Biotin in my multivitamin that I have been taking form day 1 and started using Nioxin shampoo a few weeks ago. Maybe it is helping.
