So sorry I know how you feel. I was opened up for a sleeve and it was cancelled due to a large hiatal hernia. So pissed off! After 2 weeks on a liquid diet and total terror I wake up with nothing done! And I still have to recover!

Love happy stories, love success stories. I'm a future RnY early-mid March at Mount Carmel in Columbus Ohio. I do want WLS surgery but was not prepared to throw away,4/5th of my nstural stomach on a surgery that would not eradicate my GERD I had a cousin who died at 68 from esophageal cancer. The continued irritation in my esophagus could put me at risk,to follow in her footsteps.RnY gives you a little quicker weight loss, although many VSG are done, Rn Y is still the gold standard. I only plan one bariatric surgery ,in my lifetime so I want the best. I'm 72, want to spend the remainder of my life thinner, happier and healthier.

Sorry I haven't kept up. It has been a bit hectic. I had RNY on the 14th. Best thing I ever did. Starting weight was 279# 3 years ago. I was 231# at first Dr appointment, 211# day of surgery 221# day after. Lots of Fluid weight from IV'S. Today I am 190#. I had a 1 1/2 week stall at 194#. I go to Dr tomorrow for 6 week check. I have had several episodes of dumping. No fun. Still learning.

I'm still waiting on my initial consultation appointment, but I've been looking at both options for quite some time. I have GERD, so the surgeon may tell me that the sleeve is not indicated for me, which would make my decision a lot easier. And I'll be fine with getting the "gold standard" gastric bypass if that's what he advises.
In your case, it appears that your surgeon doesn't strongly prefer one of the other and has cleared you for your choice of procedure. My analytical mind leans toward the gastric bypass. I consulted for a company that conducted phase four pharmaceutical trials, and I've always leaned heavily toward treatments that have the best efficacy and the lowest mortality/morbidity rates as indicated by large peer-reviewed studies. My research into the studies points me toward gastric bypass. That said, we are not talking about which pill to take here. These surgeries impact more than the amount of weight we lose and the number of years we can expect to live. Both have advantages and disadvantages that may impact your post-surgery life in different ways.
Have you asked your surgeon what he/she would choose if it were for him/herself? I think that's always a good question if you are undecided.

Don’t worry, it’s very uncommon to have this happen. On the up side recovery has been easy. Off pain meds by second day. Driving by day 3. Good luck!

Nope. Seeing the surgeon tomorrow to see what my options are. I may go to bypass so that my diabetes will resolve which was the number one reason for the surgery. Scared tho
wondering whether my insurance will pay for a second surgery. Not sure how long I’d have to wait before it could be done.

Hi I had gastric bypass from sleeve about a year and a half ago. I have had no problems with it. I do still have some acid reflux but that is my fault if I eat too late. I would do it over again. I have had nothing but success with it. As far as after surgery, I felt like since I had gastric sleeve this was nothing different. As a matter of fact to me it was an easier recovery.

SurpRise I'm on the spectrum myself, I don't "come out" to everyone but I'm high-func Aspie. Didn't always have the diagnosis, as a Female Aspie, first they denied,we existed, we ( I'm 72) learned to cope, sublimate, try to fit in, our symptoms seldom got the attention male autistic had, but we are as Neuroally Diverse. My mother (who really didn't understand) told me I didn't try hard enough to make friends, oooh I tried but they, didn't want to befriend me. I had an aunt who told me I was preverse, the term she was looking for was obtuse. She told me to run thru the house with the sweeper, how was I supposed to know she wanted to vacumn,? she didn't say so. Other autistics don't upset me because I'm there too.Love your son, sure our neural wiring may be different but we are wonderful people who do have great value. I learned this in adulthood after being told I was innately flawed from childhood on. You have to take care,of yourself too and if weight loss is in your future I for one will cheer you on. sorry I got on my soapbox but I thought you, might, understand. Give my best to all you love and i,know you'll want to be my friend.

You can pay a lot for bariatric Vitamins for either procedure...or you can be cheap like me, buy store brands (buy one get one free) and your nutritionist will still clear them for use:)
I don't get fancy chewable Calcium. I get the rock hard june bug sized calcium citrate monsters....and just hold them in my mouth with a swig of hot coffee until they start to errode. Then, I just munch them up into paste and swallow them. The taste isn't that bad, and the cost is exponentially less. I used to put them through a pill crusher and eat the dust with sugar free Cool Whip.
My Multi Vitamins are Store Brand (equivilant to Flinstone's Complete) kid's chewable vitamins in animal shapes...lol. I take two a day. I don't mind them.
I also take extra B Complex, B12 and D (because I'm deficient living in the north). I buy whatever's cheapest or pick up a sale on Amazon.
B12 and D...you can chew, they're bland and not offensive.
But B Complex? Yikes...you don't ever want to chew that. Bleh!

I converted from sleeve to bypass this past Tuesday. I also considered a resleeve, but the surgeon felt that I wouldn't get to my goal weight without switching to bypass. I am now recovering and it has gone quite well. I think having been through the entire recovery process once helps the second time (even though there were a lot of differences during post-op with this surgeon). When I woke up from surgery, it was really rough - so much tummy pain and major gas pains in my left shoulder. My new pouch kept having what I would describe as spasms and it really didn't like ice chips. I had a 2-night hospital stay this time, and I feel like that made a lot of difference in how I'm feeling today.
Best of luck to you! I'm hoping to share some excellent weight loss experiences in the coming months!

Primrose, I'll be here with you on your journey. I will have my RnY in early-mid March, I too have a hiatal hernia which will be repaired. H.H. seem to run in my family, both my late mother and my daughter as well as oodles of cousins. Since I'm not going anywhere feel free to ask me anything, if I don't have the answer somebody on this forum will. We're in this to win this,my little buddy!
