On the gut front, mine has shrunk quite a bit, its was close to 56"s at the belly button on the start of everything and is now 45" on a 70 pound weight loss.

My doctor actually writes exercise expectations on a prescription pad...it's a very important part of our program and is stressed.

Yes there's also worse things than delaying or canceling a surgery. Like getting hit by an Asteroid.
The fact is if you have a documented record of your a1c on paper and anything bad happens it's a clear cut case of negligent behavior by the surgical team, and opens the door to liability and lawsuits by the hospital and surgical team as well as them eating the cost of any complications. Why they would proceed without during their due diligence is beyond me.
And you've made it blatantly clear that you haven't cleaned up your diet at all so that your BMI still qualifies.
You can eat lots of calories without eating garbage allowing your blood sugar to go all over the place. Complex carbohydrates, nuts fats less lean meats coconut/dairy cream are all high in calories allowing you to maintain your weight without spiking your blood sugar up and down.
But it sounds like that's not the answer you want to hear.
Why your surgical team hasn't addressed it is beyond me. It's possible they don't give a ****, it's possible they're unorganized, it's possible they didn't look at it because your PCP did the lab work, or it's possible that it's something they won't address until the last minute.
You have two choices. Address the issue, or continue to try to convince people on the internet that it's not a big deal and roll the dice with whatever happens

Sometimes some of the stuff I see on this board sounds like some surgeons only want perfect patients. That’s their choice but being perfect did not get most of us here and to make the choice to have WLS. I’m glad some surgeons do higher risk cases or a lot of people that really need this tool would be SOL.

I couldn't wear a bra for a couple of weeks after surgery (incision was under the band), so if you're going back to work, I'd pick up some snug tank tops to wear under other shirts to tame the "girls"!

My 2nd time around I started at a HW of 242 at my revision consult. Which was actually heavier than my first wls back in 2010. SW was 226 on 8/8/17. My program never asked me to set a specific goal. If I went by the BMI chart, I should be 142. I had exactly 100lbs of excess weight to lose. My personal goal would be to get to 150. Just at the top of normal on the BMI chart for my height. As of this morning, I have 9lbs to go.

My first NSV that really stood out was being able to wear riding boots that weren’t wide calf. Now I can cross my legs easily and even double cross my legs. Also, I tried on jeans on Sunday and was able to put on a size 8 without issue.

I’m 5’4 and my initial goal was 150. I’m 135 and at 23% bodyfat so I really shouldn’t lose any more as 23% is the bottom of the range for my age. So my goal is to maintain between 135 and 140.

I am 5'4 and I started at 332. I am currently 256lbs. I would love to be down to 140-150, but ultimately somewhere in the 1's would be great!
My greats NSV so far has been having more energy and not having to blink an eyelash when I go to pick out an outfit in my closet. It all fits, most of it too big now!

cbf reacted to Lenibug in What percentage of excess weight can you expect to lose with VSG?
I'm actually new here - I came looking for information about some Vitamin supplements, but I'm glad I found this ! I had VSG ... the only long term side effects so far have been new onset GERD (just started within the last year and a half or so) and anemia (tried every kind of Iron supp. - eventually came to the conclusion i just need annual iron infusions). The anemia may not be related, but my hematologist does blame the sleeve for it. My only concern the older I get is whether I'm getting enough Calcium (and whether I'll end up with osteoporosis). I can't find a lot of studies on that. I would love if anyone had information on the % of people who have long term bone issues after VSG.
Life feels absolutely 'normal' .. though I'm not sure if that's just because it has become the new normal for me over the years. I can eat fairly normally (much smaller portions than most people of course), though there are still bad days. Every now and then, I'll feel sick or even throw up after just a bite or two of something that I can normally eat fine. It happens rarely enough that I don't feel like it hinders my daily life. There are certain foods that I absolutely don't handle (eggs, for instance ..unless cooked into something.. so sad about that one), but I know that and stay away. Biggest change since surgery has been my sugar intake - more than a couple tiny bites of something even now (ice cream, candy, jelly/jam, Cookies, etc) makes me feel absolutely awful.
I can still go out to eat - I just order a side/app or bring leftovers home. I don't completely stay away from carbonation like I've seen many people talk about .. but it hasn't prevented success and it doesn't make me feel bloated, gassy, etc. Calorie counting has long since gone out the window - how much and what you eat everyday to maintain becomes a habit - you'll know if what youre putting into your body is going to mean you have to exercise a little more or choose better at your next meal.
The last thing - never a day since my surgery have I regretted this decision. It was the catalyst we all hope it will be - the push needed to get off my butt and start living and being healthy. Once I started exercising, eating better, seeing the weight drop off - I started noticing a significant change in my mental and emotional health. Not only did I become physically healthier - my mind starting keeping pace. It is so true that when you start loving yourself, you can really start loving and appreciating everything else in life! (BTW - not that I didnt love myself prior to my weight loss--we should ALL love ourselves anyway .. we are beautiful regardless of our weight, but its a different feeling that blooms when you start feeling accomplished, confident, and proud of yourself).
Please dont hesitate to ask more questions! I hope this made sense -I kind of rushed through it before having to go to work.

Yes..definitely possible with determination!!! I am 5'1 and was 245 at surgery. That was 8 yrs ago and have kept a steady weight at 115. It didnt come easy ...I exercised 5 days a week for several hours a day for the first year (after healing of course)...and of course youre going to hit plateaus and think youre failing, but dont give up. it CAN be done- good luck!!

cbf reacted to RickM in What percentage of excess weight can you expect to lose with VSG?
Starting where you are, with a low 40's BMI, 90-100% EWL is quite attainable, but as always, "it depends". Implicitly, your metabolism isn't too badly screwed up by obesity (yet) or you would be heavier - so that is in your favor. While the oft-quoted 60% is an average, that is an average over all patients with the VSG, with starting points from BMI 35 to 70 and above, and also includes early patients who were sleeved as the first step of a DS where total weight loss was not the goal (only partial loss to attain a healthier condition for the more extensive surgery.) There is a rule of thumb that some surgeons use in comparing procedures, that assigns average BMI losses to each procedure, with a lapband being "worth" about 10 points, a VSG 15-20, an RNY 15-25, and a DS 25-35 (or numbers to that effect - best of my recollection.) But this does put you right into the middle of the VSG "sweet spot", where it works quite well. Some/many can do better than these numbers, but it takes more work, and the numbers give a rough idea of the how much success can be attributed to a procedure, on average, and how much to individual effort and/or circumstances.
Another aspect to this is - how "average" do you want to be, or does your surgeon or program strive to be? As you can see above in some of the posts, many programs quote overall averages to their patients, with the implication that average is "good enough". Other programs will push their patients harder, striving for 100% EWL, and even if some fall short and "only" attain 90%, isn't that better than 60%? It is not unusual for programs to base their VSG protocols on their RNY practices and call that "good enough". The problem here is that the RNY gives the patient and added performance boost during their loss phase of some caloric malabsorption, which allows for a somewhat more permissive, higher calorie diet, so sleeve patients on the same diet tend not to do quite so well. Some practices tailor their protocols more closely to the sleeve's characteristics, and get better results.
There is also a psych aspect to this is well - some patients will be very pleased get to 65-70%, beating the goal, and will be encouraged by that success to maintain their discipline longer term and avoid substantial regain; others may be bummed out by "failing" to get more than 90%, throw in the towel and go back to old habits and subsequent regain. Still others will hear a doc say 60% and think "I'm not going through all of this for a measly 60%, I can, and will, do better than that and show them!" Where do you fit in to that spectrum?

This is a very good question. For me, losing on 60% would leave me at 183lb and that is way too close to 200lb for my comfort. I'm hoping determination and doing the right thing will get me closer to my goal.

We are all different in our experiences. Just do you! It’ll happen and you’ll be amazing!

Hi I’m 69 and was sleeved April 12th with hiatal and umbilical hernia repairs. On clear liquid diet and have lost 6 lbs so far. I have dieted for years with temporary success. My diabetes was not under control despite taking 3 different pills and an injection. My health was getting worse and I wanted to be able to keep up with my 5 little grandchildren.
I was terrified but the surgery was really easy. The pain was like a dull ache and they keep you medicated so you’re really ok. I was walking laps in the ward the same day and released the next. You can do this!

I'm honestly baffled by this. You ate a small portion of food, that in total probably had 300 calories in it. You are more than two months out and this doesn't sound like it represents any kind of overeating. Just because you are eating healthier doesn't mean that you are limited to only eating healthy things for the rest of your life. The goal is moderation which it sounds like you are doing, don't try to convince yourself that you did anything wrong or that you "cheated." You ate what you wanted and did it in a way that conformed to your weight loss goals, so congrats.

    Hello there!
You are about to have surgery and it's scaring you to death? You are thinking you made a mistake? Yes, that is normal. You will be okay. There are many threads about that. Have a look.
You just had your surgery and you feel like crap? It's hard to swallow and you ache all over? You wish you had not done this? Yes, that is normal. You will be okay. There are many threads about that. Have a look.
You're recovering from surgery, but the restricted diet is driving you up a wall? You'd like some assurances that there are things you can eat that won't make you bored senseless and/or nauseous, and if not, comforting words that this will pass and the next stages are better? Yes, that is normal. You will be okay. There are many threads about that. Have a look.
It's been a few weeks since surgery and you're worried you're not losing as much weight as other people? Yes, that is normal. You will be okay. There are many threads about that. Have a look.
It's been two or three weeks since your surgery and you seem to have stopped losing weight entirely? You maybe even gained a few pounds? Yes, that is normal. You will be okay. There are many threads about that. Have a look.

It is totally cool to ask about all of these things! It's totally cool to worry and want some nice people to give you advice and tell you that you are not alone. Post anything you would like. But you can also take a few minutes and read some of the earlier posts. You should totally do that, too, as a) it will give you more answers to the thing that is bothering/scaring you more quickly and b ) it will help you see that you're not alone and there are nice people here who have had the same or similar problems and they turned out okay. Also, by posting your worries in the pre-existing threads, you will make the top of the forum less scary to other new people, as there won't be a half dozen posts on the same problem, just a few longer ones with lots of support and answers already in place.
The forum didn't open this morning! Don't discount how much you can learn by reading what's already here. You are going to be okay. Settle in and read stuff. It will help, I promise.
