Good luck had mine last Monday. First two to 3 days are a little uncomfortable, but you will be just fine. Once done, things do change, even at this early stage for me, I am feeling changes in my body & head. Stay focused, be encouraged.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad I can't even imagine doing this diet while grieving. My emotional resilience is absolutely nil at the moment. You're getting some big hugs from me across the miles!

Thanks I needed to read this! I started my liquid diet the day after my father died and it was crazy but I made it through but tonight is the worst since I started.

ksadiq18 reacted to bellabloom in 3 years, one hell of a journey!
    Hey all!
I wanted to post and update my progress and share my journey for newcomers.
I’m three years out of VSG surgery, start weight 240 lbs at 5’6.

My lowest weight after surgery was 114. Scary scary thin. After my surgery I could barely eat for an entire year and had malnutrition and many mental and physical barriers to overcome before I began eating again. It took a year to get my stomach straightened out to where I could eat solid food, and another two years to get my mind straightened out to where I was eating enough food.
Surgery like this is a big deal, easier for some, harder for others. Because we are a population that struggles with disordered eating behavior and many of us eating disorders, it’s hard to predict how it might affect you. For me, it leveled my life for awhile- but intimately put me into a better place.
My life before surgery consisted of constant dieting and deprivation with periods of intense binging on thousands and thousands of calories when I failed on the numerous diets I tried. Surgery was for me a last resort that I believed would stop this cycle and make me effortlessly thin forever or really just take away my ability to eat, because eating was a huge source of emotional pain.
Here I am at my lowest weight.

That’s some scary ****! I went through some very dark times after surgery that forced me to get super real about what I needed to be happy and healthy.
This past year I’ve been consistently rebuilding my health. I began doing this by saying no to dieting and calorie control. No counting, no obsessing, no weighing myself. My life now three years out consists of taking care of my health in a more holistic way. I eat in abundance, and I’ve recently began to be super inspired towards fitness and weight training. My calories average around 2500 per day although I don’t know exactly as I don’t count them. I’ve been able to go a lot of time without reading a food label or thinking too much about what I eat.
For me at this point weight has become something that I fight to be at peace with. I try to keep my mind off numbers and I’m focused on just feeling great and strong in my skin. I no longer believe being super thin is the path to happiness. Being able to eat and enjoy food, socialize without worry about food, and be in a healthy body is more important to me. My weight will always be secondary to those things.
I’m posting this to give you an idea of what’s possible long term. Surgery is a great tool in some ways but it comes at a high cost. It’s taken me years to rebuild my health and I’m still trying to get my metabolism and muscle mass back to wear it should be. But even without surgery I would have faced a hard road and surgery gave me the push I needed.
These days I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time and also I think, healthier.

Best wishes on your journey! And remember- you are beautiful right now. Weight doesn’t determine a persons beauty or worth!!!

Good luck on your upcoming surgery. Three things to do at the moment if you haven't already done them is:
    1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
    2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery.
    3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.
As far as what to do while in the hospital:
    1. Walk, walk, walk. - It helps to reduce the gas pain.
    2. Make sure you get a trapeze bar on your hospital bed. It helps you get up out of bed. You will be very sore after the operation and this will help with rule number 1.

This is a great place to exchange info. I'm new also. I got the news a few days ago and my surgery date is FEB 2. Nerves overload. How to prepare? Where to start? I have five kids so I have planning to do for them as well. Sitters, school stuff, and it is just overwhelming. But I have broken out my legal pads and calendars and I am making lists and getting things done. We can do this!!! Beast Mode!

You'll never feel the way you use to... And it's kinda the point .
You'll have to exercise longer to feel winded
You'll forget why you used to over eat
You'll finally start peeking on the juniors size side of the store (oops that's me)
You'll start arguing with food labels questioning why so much sugar (seriously why? It's just yogurt)
You'll take way too many selfies from all your new found good angles
You'll forget what being heavy feels like
You may even forget you ever felt any regrets...

I had surgery yesterday and everything went well. I’ve had one little trouble spot below the center of my rib cage. I started drinking Water today. It’s going pretty good if I don’t have any setbacks then this is pretty much a breeze. I have yet to feel the fullness of my pouch but I’m sipping water & taking it slow. I’ve been taking my pain meds pretty regularly due to that one trouble spot other than that things are going great! Almost time to go for another walk.
