I'm getting more nervous as I near the end of the preop requirements. I'm done with everything my insurance requires to get a surgery date. I have my final consultation appointment on October 1st. I'll get a surgery date after that. My nerves are getting to me as this becomes "real."

Lol, congrats! I’ve been laying low with my progresss because of the same reason (of getting my hopes up) but today I got the call and I have my surgery date for 10/24 and my pre-op appointment is 10/4 .. I’m excited, nervous, and anxious. But I’m mentally and physically ready to get this done and over with so that I smash my goals and get my life back! :)

When do you start you pre-op diet?

I do! It took 2 weeks it was really fast. I went to a consultation July 31st and was able to pick my surgery date as early as 1st week of September.

My predetermination paperwork was faxed to my insurance company last Friday evening, Aug 31st. Please send some good vibes my way that i receive good news soon. I'm trying very hard to be patient. I wish there was a way to check the status of the predetermination online. Has anyone ever received an approval on the predetermination but then denied at preauthorization time?

I'm not quite where you are in the process. What i mean is i haven't been denied yet. I've completed 3 months of my dietitian visits, i've had a sleep study, which i found i do have mild sleep apnea. My BMI is currently 37. I do have osteoarthritis in both knees. My surgeon is requesting a cardio clearance and an EGD since i had my lap-band slip back in '15. He wants to make sure all looks ok. I'm very scared i won't be approved. Every day i wait, i feel more and more sad about the whole process.

Well, today was weird. On the one hand, I am thrilled to be moving forward with pursuing gastric sleeve. I'm thrilled that apparently I don't have to wait six months before I can even schedule surgery.
And why is that?
I found out that my insurance company will not cover my surgery because my BMI is 37 and it needs to be 40, minimum, for them to cover it, unless I have other co-morbidity health issues, which I do not.
I thought that having PCOS and asthma would be enough, but they aren't. It's weird to be pursing something for my health and told I am "unhealthy" enough to get the surgery and be a good candidate for it, but not "unhealthy" enough to have my insurance pay for it. So now we're looking at getting a home equity loan to cover the $16,000 cost, which is due up front. It's a weird feeling. I guess I could gain the 25 lbs needed to qualify, and then go through the 6 month prep period my insurance requires, but that all seems very counterintuitive to why I'm on this journey -- which is to be healthier. So I think I'm just going to go into a bit of debt and do it.
Have you ever heard of this type of situation happening? It's totally weird, isn't it!

I had a low bmi when I started the process and wished I weighed just a tiny bit more, it probably would have made the whole process easier for me. My bmi was 36 but I had hypertension and mild sleep apnea. I had comments all the time of, "but you're not that fat" and same as you got looked at when I wore a bathing suit by skinny people wondering how in the world I crammed myself into that thing.
It's such a cruel world, I fought for a year to get my insurance to pay, that included paying a company (which worked wonders) to appeal on my behalf. My insurance argued my blood pressure wasn't high enough, I had been on meds just about my whole life for it though. Finally the state agreed and made the insurance reverse the denial.
3 months with my new sleeve later, my bmi is almost normal, no more bp meds, no more sleep apnea and to be honest I know I look better and won't get stares in a bathing suit anymore but I don't care so much about that. I just wanted to be healthy!!!!
Everyone is different, we all have different motivations and it's not fair for someone to get called out for them. We all deserve to be happy and to get there by any means possible

I'm sorry, but you know zero about me or my situation. While I appreciate the way you politely rebuked me, there is sooooo much judgement on these boards. I'm not borderline fat or unhealthy. I'm borderline the weight my insurance requires to pay for it without a pre existing condition. It's weird. I get shunned from thin people for being overweight. But apparently for others I'm not big enough. I find it hilarious you asked me if I ever tried counting calories or using an app. No, at 42 and 100 pounds overweight I never thought to try those. Think it would help if I exercise too? Yes, we are all on our own journey. I see posts on here all the time that make me wanna roll my eyes. I especially love the worried about loose skin comments when I'm just trying g not to die young. Thank you for giving me permission to feel what I feel though. If anyone else was offended by my post, it was not meant to. Moving on now......
