Losebig got a reaction from Lufifi in Sleeved 12/27 - Drinking fine? Restriction?? Worried!!
Liquids go right through, so once healed as you noted it's slow but you can consume a lot. Puréed food is similar. You really start to see it when you move to soft foods. Just pace yourself the first few times you overeat can be pretty unpleasant

Losebig got a reaction from md73 in Does everyone go through this feeling??
Had the same. The thing that helped was that Ivirtually everyone more than a few months out says it's the best decision they made. Even people who had severe and weird issues say that. You can still eat what you enjoy eventually, just a lot less. I was very nervous in pre-op waiting (it was hours), but then realized that my dr does like 5 of these a day and luckily was able to talk to other folks waiting for the same surgery too.

I was the day after you and have been able to eat a lot of puree items. I pureed lentil Soup and could eat 2 cups of it (VERY slowly). The DR said that purees are almost liquid and go right through, which is why you can eat much more. I'm now doing soft food and that definitely sticks more and I seem to be able to eat between 1/4 and 1/2 a cup, which is about right. I think you're right on track.
Weight loss wise - I'm down about 30 lbs from start and 17 down from the surgery (my weigh in day is Tuesday, so I'm probably a little less). Right now your Water weight is going to fluctuate a lot based on Fluid intake, sodium etc. I'm getting a lot of sodium (soups / broth / shakes) and plenty of fluid, so last week my weight stayed the same, though i can see I'm noticeably thinner. My team says that around 15 per month for the first few months is typical and then it may be a little slower. I am tracking calories just to make sure and I know that at 600 - 900 calories per day I'm not maintaining or gaining so I'm not too worried about what the scale says... you shouldn't be either. You may want to take some key measurements, which will help you see the weight loss even if the scale hasn't caught up (I do bicep, thigh, chest and waist).

Right after I had to sleep on my back with my upper body slightly elevated (a recliner didn't work for some reason). Now just a little further out I'm sleeping on my back or my left side (my left side only has one incision, my right side - which I can't sleep on has 2 including the bigger one). I accidentally laid on my stomach for a few minutes last night and that was a mistake.

I tried about 12 days out (purée) and it did not go well. I'm having lots of luck with Greek yogurt or puréed lentil Soup and vegetable beef soup, good flavor and it's very liquid. I'll try tuna again later this week, I knew after one tiny bite it was a no go last time.

Hang in there, I struggled some with the pre op diet as well. The good news is it seems easier post surgery, that extreme hunger feeling doesn't happen like before. A binge also isn't as bad because you just physically can't eat as much and shoving food in has immediate and painful consequences.
Great job being accountable, don't let a little slip become a big slide.

Sorry for your loss. Pretty scary for both of you I imagine. I'd keep the date for now, but get through the mourning period (at least the start of it) and once things calm down try to have a real and honest conversation about it. Understanding what happened, as much as you can about why that happened and then looking at that VS your situation may help - but only after the initial emotions settle down. You can always cancel or bump out the date as it gets closer if needed. If it's the same surgeon perhaps another one or other mitigating measures can help him get comfortable.

It gets easier, most people aren't hitting Protein goals until 1.5-2 weeks out. I've been using Premier Protein shakes, it takes a while to drink them though (several hours). Is your issue taste or thickness? I had to dilute mine the first week. Some people get an adversion to Protein Shakes after, if you do call your dietician for ideas, they see it a lot

I had been dieting ever since high school, often losing good chunks of weight, but never could keep it off. At one point I lost nearly 100 lbs and was close to an ideal weight for about 5 years then slowly gained back to my highest ever. The fact that I had done it once before made the decision for surgery even harder... then my DR asked for a weight loss history. I wrote it all down and realized that while I lost weight I couldn't keep it off and that was one of the main drivers for the surgery. Just to prove it to myself before deciding to do the surgery i decided to do the same diet, just without surgery. I stuck to it for 4 weeks, was miserable, but lost 30 lbs (600 - 800 cals per day). Then I gained it all back plus another 10. That's when I decided I couldn't do it on my own and that I was running out of time before I had some kind of major health issue. No regrets - the important part is that you get to a healthy weight and avoid all the problems you would otherwise face. It doesn't matter how you get there, WLS is definitely not cheating and so far for me its as hard as any diet I've ever done, the one difference is I can't cheat or stop, my body won't physically let me.
Hang in there and don't worry about if you tried hard enough, worry about doing this for yourself and taking care of yourself.

I had mine on the 12th too. I get a fairly severe pain in that area if I eat something that doesn't work or if I drink too fast. I also get a horrible left shoulder pain, which I think is likely referred from the diaphragm. If it's constant I would have more concern.

Hang in. There.. I was the day before you and a couple of days ago I was Iin the same boat. They couldn't. Control my pain in the hospital and had to double the Dilauded IV meds, but only did it after I mentioned it several times (turns out I've got some resistance for whatever reason). I couldn't get anything down, but still made it home, where I was unable to swallow pain pills and after about 12 hours ended up back in the ER via ambulance with a 240 heart rate! There they did some serious pain control (dilauded) and hydrated and gave me some IV nutrients. I had serious stomach spasms that wouldn't stop - Ativan actually stopped those.
At some point things got a lot better (maybe day 6?). My swelling went down, the pain and spasms stopped overnight and now I can almost hit my Water goal and Protein goal.
The ER nurse said something really helpful to me. She said it's good you're doing this and that while it sucks now, you didn't do it for now, you did it for 10 years for now and you're going to look back on this as one of the best things you ever did. The next day the cardiologist said something very similar. It was very encouraging and they're right - it sucks, but it gets better and the end result is worth it. Hang in there!

That pain is the liquid getting stuck and waiting to enter your stomach. Smaller sips or more time between sips will help. Sitting really straight or standing may also help. It took me 3 hrs to drink a Protein Shake yesterday.... Hopefully it gets easier when the swelling goes down!

Losebig got a reaction from AceBlaque in Surgery Today 12/14/17 and Scared
I just had mine on Tuesday as well. I was really nervous too, one thing that helped me was noticing how many other folks were there getting the same surgery and then talking to them in pre-op and on the floor afterward. I've had some minor issues (swallowing) that have kept me a here a bit longer, but pain has been well managed and I can see I'm losing weight rapidly already. One thing that really encouraged me was that virtually everyone who has had it say the first 2 weeks suck, but after that it's not too bad and they are all happy they did it and will do it again.
    Hang In there!
