Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
It never fails. You mention you eat carbs...or more than 500 calories a day...and the jealous starvation hangry patrol comes out with torches...frothing and calling for your head. Well....ya'll enjoy that. I got bigger fish to air fry. With a baked potato:)

Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
Says the woman who "liked" a post of someone rolling their eyes at my perfectly polite post about why I choose to eat carbs. If you want to preach tolerance, perhaps you should show some and not be a hypocrite? Just sayin... Would it have hurt you to just ignore a post about eating carbs? Don't people have a right to read it and decide for themselves without you policing it and interjecting your defensiveness about your own diet? As shocking as this might be....the OP was not about YOU:) I promise if you want to add to the million other posts here about eating gross quantities of animal protein...I won't say a word. Your diet...your thread....your thing. Live and let live. You'll live longer.

Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
True, I've been at maintenance since July...not long at all. Touche. You're right. And I'm also having a hell of a time keeping my weight up. I'd like to be 170...today the scale says 162. I have been actively trying to stop my weight loss for three month. Most days I eat 1600 calories, but I try for 1700-1800. That's a LOT of food when you eat mostly fruits and veggies and complex carbs. I'm not a big 'fats' eater and I limit animal proteins to 3 servings or so a week. I do get 60g of protein a day....mostly from carbs/plant sources. I also get at least 25g of dietary fiber a day. I avoid dairy. Am currently trying to eat more nuts. While I want to weigh 170, my team says my body might have other ideas....and to trust my body. This is probably really good advice. But yeah...part of my focus lately has been arresting my weight loss. My posts probably reflect that. Believe it or not....there are others who are coping with this issue. There are a lot of DIFFERENT experiences represented on this board:)

Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
I think there are a lot of crappy "bariatric medical teams" out there that are offering really God awful advice that is potentially causing harm and endangering people. My medical team thinks so, too. So what do we do about that conundrum?

Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
What I think is awful....is how people here are continually encouraged to do what doesn't work. How many hundreds of posts have we read that go like this: "I lost all this weight by self denial and will power and eating a very restricted diet....and I'm so sad and disgusted with myself that I put half of it back on. HELP!" And what do these people routinely get told here? Go back on your diet that was unsustainable...and didn't work. Try harder. Deny more. It's crazy. And it's unhealthy to yo-yo. There is no harm in illustrating a DIFFERENT path supported by science. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. There are and always will be a variety of options and opinions.

My medical provider is 100% on board with my diet. My medical provider is also a leading university teaching hospital. If your medical provider does not agree with my medical provider, there's nothing I can do about that. We've known about the dangers of low carb diets for along time. Here's an American Harvard study of 120,000 people. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2989112/

Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
Yep, I eat them all. Love them. They're a daily part of my diet. Sometimes multiple times a day. OMG, they're carbs! Yep, they are. But they're not refined, over-processed, or bad. And you know what else they are? Excellent sources of plant based protein and fiber. A baked potato has 160 calories. By itself, it has 4g of protein. Throw some vegetarian chili on there and you're in the high teens. Awesome lunch! Brown rice...half a cup has around 100 calories and 3g of protein. Add some bean or peas and you've got complete amino acids...tons of protein... and a crazy awesome amount of fiber. Why is dietary fiber important? To grow good gut bugs. Your microbiota and the health of your gut (and metabolism) depend on happy little bacteria. The strains of gut bugs that live in the guts of skinny people....have a favorite food: dietary fiber. Feed your good bugs good things and they'll be good to you. They like to eat fruit, veggies, beans, whole wheat bread... Whole wheat bread? I eat this A LOT:) For instance.....A lite Thomas English wheat muffin has 5g of protein for 100 calories. This dietary powerhouse has 8g of dietary fiber! Smear that sucker with your favorite nut butter or fruit preserves, and you're in business. One of my favorite go-to dinners these days...... is fresh homemade wheat bread with 16 veggie soup...and fruit for dessert. I eat about four servings of fruit a day...and that's not even counting the watermelon I huddle over in the car while hissing "My Precious...." LOL:) A banana is not "a candy bar" A banana is a wonderful healthy food. I eat lots of them. Hell, I have a Yonanas that makes them into ice cream. They're terrific. Normal weight does not HAVE to mean giving up carbs. It means being carb smart, balancing, and making mindful choices. More than one way to do this whole thing. Weight loss success does not mean ONLY eating meat for the rest of your life with broccoli on the side. That's great once in a while, though! Not trying to tell anyone they're doing it wrong.....just sayin'....there's more than one way to do it right:) Extreme thinking, extreme dieting, extreme self denial....is not sustainable. Work on a forever diet you can live with. Be mindful, be accountable....but be kind to yourself.

Forget Selenium Supplements...Eat one Brazil Nut per day!
https://www.lybrate.com/topic/benefits-of-brazil-nuts-and-its-side-effects Just one Brazil nut contains 90 micrograms of selenium, or 129 percent of the daily recommended intake. A true Super Food:) Be careful, though....too many Brazil nuts can be not only fattening, they can have toxic side effects. One of two a day, is perfect, and likely will provide some great benefits.

One weird food you can't live without....what's the strangest thing?
And yep, it would probably be better to break the habit all together....but my therapist says "baby steps." "Be kind to yourself, you're doing a great job." "Do what works." "Mindful compromise is progress." I like this whole idea of being nice to myself about food and not punishing myself anymore. I know where that leads. The new me makes mindful compromises...and is kind to herself. It's a good thing.

One weird food you can't live without....what's the strangest thing?
WATERMELON. it's out of season and I cry a little every time I spend the big bucks...lol....but it's the treat I crave like nothing else. If anyone had told me I'd literally crave watermelon more than candy, donuts, fresh baked bread....I'd have said they were crazy. I bought a deli container of melon chunks and ate it in the car the other day. LOL. But I thought...ya know...this is the time I used to break down and get fast food...after shopping. It's a habit trigger. So, now I eat watermelon in the car after shopping. I can live with that compromise.

Ate about five bites...but damn it was IMPOSSIBLY good!
It's not turkey...it's an impossible burger...totally vegan. But I swear it tastes like beef. Really good! Man, if I looked at this pic a hundred pounds ago....at what would fill me up...I'd have thought I was kidding. My husband and daughter are always surprised when I say I'm done. There's something that feels so good about eating something really great...and saying...I'm done. I couldn't do that before. I always had to finish it off. These days? I can say....five bites is enough, I feel full and good, time to put it in a box. There is such a victory in that. It's joyful. For the first time in my life I feel like food and I have a truce. I try to make good choices for my regular day to day diet...but on special occasions I just try to eat a reasonable amount of whatever sounds good. So far...it's working really great. Am below goal and feeling fantastic:)

Ate about five bites...but damn it was IMPOSSIBLY good!
Had lunch with my boss today and was put up to trying the Impossible Burger. This thing is made from wheat and potato protein, coconut oil and heme extracted from plant sources. Yep...a vegan friendly burger...that bleeds. Weird, eh? But seriously...when the coconut oil sizzles on the grill and sears this stuff....and the irony heme tastes distinctly like grilled meaty juicy goodness... it tastes amazingly like real meat. I took about five bites and was stuffed....but I took the rest home and my hubby thought I was kidding about it being real meat. He was shocked and thought it was delicious. Yepper....I ate a few fries, too. And about two inches of a diet coke. With lunch. LOL....all naughty, I know. But my weight is slipping down again, and I'm trying to get my calories up to 1700 or so to maintain. Life is balance and a good veggie burger for a celebration lunch is something I'm just gonna do now and then:) I had mine cooked well-done. The idea of a bloody veggie burger was just too weird. LOL:) Here's a pic of my impossible burger, and a video about how they're magically made!

Carbs are important for good health and avoiding early death
For all you intermittent fasters....Dr. Longo has created a diet that mimics fasting. Some interesting food for thought. https://ngp.usc.edu/usc-scientist-valter-longo-talks-about-how-to-live-a-longer-and-healthier-life/ As always....take what you like, leave the rest. Cheers!

Carbs are important for good health and avoiding early death
There's a lot of science behind it. High protein diets are an early death sentence long term. High protein intake activates growth hormone receptors...which increase concentrations of growth factors...whose increased concentrations are associated with aging, diabetes and cancer. Essentially...the more you simulate those growth hormone receptors (which you do when you eat lots of protein)...the more your cells will turn over. The more your cells turn over...the faster you age and develop age-related illness. The contradiction to this....is older people. If you're 65+, your body is dealing with muscle wasting and greater threat from cancer. In this case...you need more cell turn over to hopefully catch wonky cells before they turn into cancer...so a little more protein is ok for older folks. If you want to read more about this, check out The Longevity Diet by Valter Longo, PhD. If you think this is crazy talk...and that all proteins are your friends and that carbs are the devil...that's up to you. Not intending to freak anyone out or push an agenda....just hoping to inspire folks to do a little research when considering their long-term diet plans. Obviously, paying attention to your program's requirements and working with your dietitian in the loss stage is important! This is more stuff to consider long term.

Carbs are important for good health and avoiding early death
https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/902112 MUNICH — In an observational study that used a one-time snapshot of carbohydrate intake, middle-aged Americans who consumed the least amount of carbohydrates were more likely to die from any cause, heart disease, or cancer during the subsequent decade than their peers who had the highest carbohydrate intake. In a second part of the study, these findings were replicated in a meta-analysis of seven studies with cohorts from Greece, Japan, Sweden, and the United States that included people followed for almost 2 decades. "Given the fact that low-carbohydrate diets may be unsafe, it would be preferable not to currently recommend these diets," senior study author Maciej Banach, MD, PhD, Medical University of Lodz, Poland, said during a press conference here at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2018. But, he conceded, "probably for a short time" — 6 or 12 months — low-carb diets might be useful for weight loss and good for parameters such as glucose and lipids.

Get your piece of the 9 Million Dollar Premier Protein Lawsuit!
Ask yourself this. How often does Joe Citizen have cases and cases of his favorite nutritional supplement tested at a lab...where he then cherry picks the results and goes to court? If I seem ornery, Matt, I'm not ornery with you... This whole thing blatantly stinks of a competing brand playing dirty...and that angers me. Premier protein and all whey products....in my opinion, are cancer waiting to happen...so I don't care for them personally. Any of them. But I will say that PP is the most palatable of the ready made products I've tasted. It's an extremely successful product that is raking in cash...and its competitors are not happy that so many people prefer it. It's particularly preferred in the bariatric crowd, that as you know has a massive growing market demographic. My advice to competitors: Fix your products. Make them more palatable. Don't pursue this underhanded nonsense. People buying into the sensationalism....is sad and irritating. I apologize if my angst seemed in any way directed at you, Matt. It was not.

Get your piece of the 9 Million Dollar Premier Protein Lawsuit!
It was a petty lawsuit with a crappy payout. Premier Protein cares as much about 9 million dollars.... as I do about spending $4 on a Starbucks. They also deny wrongdoing or misleading advertising. Why do I say it's petty? How is this possible? The plaintiff spent a bunch of money testing a bunch of shakes. A few were found to contain between 26.9 grams and 28.34 grams....instead of the promised 30g. A few were also found to contain a bit more than 30g. Most contained 1g one side or the other....of the promised 30g. World Shattering, huh? The reality is....if you drink these damned shakes as often as the typical bariatric dieter....you're getting on average roughly 30g per shake...even if one or two of your shakes comes up short a gram or two. Who is "injured" by this? It's petty and pointless.

Get your piece of the 9 Million Dollar Premier Protein Lawsuit!
Alex, I have to strongly disagree with your bariatric surgeon friend on the bioavailability of caseinate to weight loss patients. Caseinate is absorbed affectively in the small intestine,,,and provides a steady stream of blood amino acid levels all day....rather than whey...which has more rapid absorption, but spikes your levels dangerously. Would whey be any better? No. That said...as you know....I'm careful with the use animal proteins in general because of the associated risks of cancer, heart disease, and early mortality in people under 65. Consuming vast quantities of milk protein under any circumstance is just a bad idea. Tofu, refried beans, potatoes, nut butters....great choices Pea protien powder with brown rice protien powder. Lot of healthier safer options. Is Premier Protien a horrible product? It's about as horrible as the nutrition advice of most bariatric clinics.

Sweet tooth
Fruit, beans and whole grains. We're primates, not big cats. Eating heavy protein and no carbs isn't just unhealthy for us, it's unnatural for us. You have a sweet tooth because you're a great ape. And as much self-denial as you want to inflict upon yourself, eventually your physiology will scream for carbs....because that's what your ape body was built to eat. The trick is picking the right carbs that will satisfy you and keep your diet on track. Fruit is high sugar, but it comes with fiber and important phytonutrients you need. Whole grains, beans, lentils, brown rice... are an awesome source of plant protein that also give you a nice slow glycemic carb burn. They are "good" carbs that help keep your sugar cravings in check. They also grow spectacular colonies of gut microbiota found in the digestive systems of thinner people:)
