GeTnBackuP got a reaction from njgal in CRAP! Tomorrow is Pre-Op with the Doc. Questions?
Great question. But gosh how awkward it is for them!!! My surgeon pays for the local hotel conference room for our monthly WLS support group and he lectures often. At one of the early ones I went to, while covering the very graphic portions of surgery on a PowerPoint, someone blurted out and asked if he’d ever lost one on the table. He stopped everything and became very somber. He took the question very seriously and the discussion shifted to the importance of communication and pre op health and that statistically it really doesn’t happen much and that no, he’d never lost a patient. It was a very important question because it opened up the fears that many of us in the audience had- this is life changing surgery and might I die during it. Yes, it’s always a possibility because of the very nature of surgery. I had two disks replaced in my neck and could have been paralyzed, or worse. I was never so scared in my life and I clung to my two sons as I was wheeled off to the operating room. It’s always a possibility.

Ask lots of questions, even if they seem stupid but especially if a response would calm your fears. I mean yesterday I asked about abnormal pain. I JUST had my gall bladder removed, almost the same surgery so I know what to expect (kind of) He smiled and said dear you’re going to be in pain, it’s surgery. You will get through it but if something doesn’t feel right, you’ll know it. Pick up the phone and call us, twenty times if you need to. Then he winked at me. I’m figuring that meant you BETTER NOT call twenty times....I feel much more sure and calmed after my pre-op visit.

The pre-op diet sounds easy until we actually have to do it. Some people want to start it early & run full steam ahead but too quickly run out of gas. This is hard. You're in one of the hardest phases of this whole thing. Know that every one of us who've made it to the other side has gone through exactly the same thing. Dig deep. Deeper than that. Find that source of inspiration. Good luck!

GeTnBackuP got a reaction from WhtWdUGive620 in MCT Oil, Keto..an alternate way to eat Post VGS
I am cleaning out my cabinet and found a fairly new bottle of MCT Oil (I dont want to throw it out...). In the past, I used it mostly for bulletproof coffee but since I am pre-surgery I am weaning off coffee for a while. I plan on saving this (expensive) stuff and want to know how I would use it post-op, several months out once I start eating again. Can I even use it?
I am soaking in all of the information I can pre-op so I will be prepared for this huge lifestyle change- I know I need to learn a whole new way of thinking towards food and the way I eat and this is the time to do it!
Yes, there are lots of posts and books and websites about this but I cannot find anything specifically about eating Keto post surgery with recipes and direction on how to start making the change, what to expect, what to do and not to do. It's a HUGE change and I want to get it right......thank you!!

Oh and I had my pre-op yesterday as well. I ended up asking a whole bunch of things but also whether he had ever “lost” any patients. His answer satisfied me. He was very calm and collected about the whole procedure; I mean he even went into detail warning me about the quirks of the hospital so I don’t get upset the day of. All in all very considerate I’d say.

Phew, what a frikken crazy day! Owners meeting at work- always a blast but we're behind schedule and they didnt let us forget it! Got lots of steps in. I also went to see a therapist on my own, went well, and I will continue to see her for awhile. Obviously I have food issues and this will do nothing but strengthen me for this journey.
Then I saw the surgeon and pre-op nurse. He answered all my questions: I will stay 2-3 days. I need to speak to the anesthesiologist about getting a breathing treatment for my asthmatic bronchitis prior to surgery. I have no gall bladder and there are no special considerations. Post-Op I can continue to take Benadryl and Claritin. I asked about the bougie and Im getting a 40 French. I LOVE IT, I laughed so hard, my doc is cool...so happy about that!!
Surgery is set up for 6AM, Tuesday October 17th. I go to the hospital 7 days prior for a drop-in assessment where I assume I'll sign other misc. consent forms and pay pay pay. Day before I am on "Clear Fast" which is not a cleanse but a nutritional, pre-op drink- 2 the day before and I bring 2 to the hospital for after surgery. I guess those will be my last and first meals on my bariatric adventure.
Oh, I take 4 grams of EPA/DHA Omega-3 supplements everyday from now til the surgery (I'll up that to 4.2 grams which equals a teaspoon).
That's it...I was way more nervous yesterday. I think part of it was I had an insanely busy day at work and my appointment literally was the last one of the day....I had no time to mind f**k myself and it all went great!
I'm so excited, I just can't hide it...if you were here, I'd kiss ya thank you so much for your support!

Just found out I was approved and will be sleeved in November. Now I'm wondering: is this an insane thing to do? Before I was approved I was sure this surgery is the right step for me. I am really done with being miserably fat. I see this surgery as the first step toward a healthier me. But now I have these sneaking doubts (and a little fear). I'm still having the surgery but I wish I felt as sure as I did before approval. Did anyone else feel this way? When did you feel that this surgery was the right choice for you?

I know that feeling, I would say it happened to most of us.. after surgery you will retreat not doing it before LoL. This was my only 1 surgery (and hope last) in mu life.. so I was scared.. once you see the progress you will be very happy with fast results.. so stop doubting and look at others before/after photos to keep you motivated.

I had similar bouts of second guessing. I'm 8 days post op and I'm so glad I followed through. I can already tell that it was a reset button for me. I know things can change as time passes but I just feel it in my bones that something has changed and I know I'm going to be successful with this.
Also, I never follow through on anything, so the fact that I got to the point that I actually had a surgery date, I thought to myself "this has to be the right decision for me if I was able to follow through this far". There's just no way I my previously self-defeating personality would have allowed me to do all of the work up to surgery unless there was something deep in my mind giving me that extra push.

    I wish you well!!!!

That is how I felt pre-op. I had a pretty good handle on my food but I still really struggled with Portion Control. I would have an 8 or 12 ounce steak when I was low carbing before surgery. A proper portion for everyone, not just a sleever is 4 ounce. I was over eating all the time and I had a hard time stopping.
You kind of have to decide for yourself what you want to do. Like for example early on the first 6 months. I did not waste calories on chicken salad. I had baked fish with Ghee. I picked foods that followed my bariatric plan in the first 6 months but I used real fat and full fat items, within reason.
Even now most of my fat come from half and half in my coffee and the cooking oil I use for my Protein and the fat in my protein (I like pork chops). I don't have to add a fat like MCT Oil. I feel like MCT oil for a sleever is kind of a hack that isn't necessary. If you really like MCT Oil you can use it, but I wouldn't use it on a healing/new intestinal tract. MCT can be hard on a normal person.
I try not to waste calories on mushy things. I love Avocado but is it fairly high in calories, doesn't trigger restriction and when you eat it with things it makes them moist and turns them soft, and possibly into a slider. Not worth it. I try to avoid sliders and accidentally turning things into a slider. Although there is no real reason not so use mayo instead of avocado but long term, the calories for chicken salad are not worth it. In the short term healing it might be a nice way to help you get protein in because it has more moisture and get your calories up because it is higher in calories but long term, just eating a chicken breast cut into cubes will be more physically satisfying?
Confused? It is confusing. You learn as you go along and you have to do what works for you.

Progress pic 2 and a half months out. 35 lbs down. i've dropped 2 pant sizes and even though I have a ways to go...The girl in the pic before surgery was sad, embarrassed, insecure...but now my confidence is climbing up again and I'm learning to love myself as I'm losing the weight. I've found that I'm not hiding. I put effort into how I present myself because I'm not worried about having to shop now. I'm so happy with my progress and how I'm practicing self love instead of self sabotage. This was yesterday and I was really feelin myself before I left for work. When you feel good about yourself, and love yourself, you have this light that shines and man people have been noticing the difference too. Hope you're all doing well on your journeys!

Are you getting in your liquids? If you are refraining from drinking liquids for 30 minutes before and after meals, you are giving yourself 1 hour to drink liquids. If you are not drinking enough, you are going to get hungry way sooner.
I make it a point to drink liquids for 2 hours between meals. I can easily drink 16-20 ounces in this time. I eat about 5 times daily, so I can get in at least 110 ounces including coffee and my the Protein Shake.
I wake up at 5am every morning and go to bed at 10pm every night. I have coffee first thing with 1Tbsp of sugar free Creamer. I eat Breakfast at 630am, a snack at 9:30am, lunch at 12:30pm, a snack at 4pm, and dinner at 7pm everyday. Each of those meals/snacks are 200 calories or less. Most days, I top out at around 800 calories, but occasionally I reach 1,000.
Anyway, Water can help to curb your hunger. I just drink it all day long whether I feel like it or not.

I know it's weird but I feel like I'm preparing for things to go wrong so I spent all day at work making sure everything was organized for my teammates in case I didn't return. Very Morbid. I just have this big fear of dying on the operating table. My surgery is 2 days away and all I can think about is dying. At least it has replaced my yearning for meat.
